Choose indicators from your material impact pathways, not from a universal checklist. Start by locating where your operations and value chain affect or depend on nature, then select measures that connect pressures such as land-use change, water use or pollution with changes in ecosystem extent, condition, species status or ecosystem services. Use primary data where practical, document modeled and secondary data, keep results tied to locations and ecosystem types, and map the set to the reporting rules that apply to your organization.

What a defensible biodiversity indicator set looks like

A credible set answers five questions for each material nature issue:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • What is changing? Identify the direct driver, such as conversion of natural habitat, extraction of wild species, water withdrawal, pollution, climate change or introduction of invasive alien species.
  • Where is it changing? Link the measure to a site, supply-chain activity, jurisdiction and ecosystem type. Biodiversity effects are location-specific; a company-wide average can conceal severe damage in one place.
  • What is the ecological consequence? Where evidence allows, pair the pressure with ecosystem extent or condition, species status, population information or an affected ecosystem service.
  • How reliable is the evidence? State whether the result is observed, supplier-reported, remotely sensed, secondary or modeled, and explain important limitations.
  • What decision does it support? An indicator should help management, investors or other report users understand exposure, progress, risk, opportunity or the effectiveness of a response.

TNFD’s metric principles are a useful test: scientific basis; sensitivity to annual change; relevance to the business model and value chain; proportionality to cost and practical capacity; usefulness to report users; potential for independent limited assurance in the medium term; and alignment with global and national goals. These principles are more reliable than selecting whichever biodiversity numbers are easiest to collect.

Set the reporting boundary before choosing measures

First establish the reporting period, organizational boundary, materiality approach and applicable standards or jurisdictional rules. The boundary should cover owned and managed sites and the business relationships through which material impacts or dependencies occur. A manufacturing company may need to include mines, agricultural suppliers, logistics corridors or contracted waste facilities even when they are outside its operational control.

Record exclusions explicitly. If a supplier region, product category or leased site is not covered because data are unavailable, explain the gap and its significance. A narrow operational inventory presented as the company’s total biodiversity footprint is misleading when material impacts occur upstream or downstream.

Map every interface with nature

Inventory sites and activities

Create a geocoded inventory of facilities, extraction areas, farms, plantations, ports, roads, reservoirs and restoration sites. Add key suppliers and relevant products or services, prioritizing activities with large land, sea, water or resource footprints. Record the country or jurisdiction for products and services where a standard calls for that breakdown.

Overlay ecological context

For each location, identify the ecosystem type, its extent and condition, nearby protected or otherwise sensitive areas, threatened species information and known ecosystem-service dependencies. The overlay does not prove an impact by itself; it shows where a pressure could be consequential and where more detailed assessment is warranted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Flag incomplete coverage

State which locations rely on supplier estimates, coarse geospatial layers or modeled data. Explain whether missing coverage is likely to bias results toward or away from high-sensitivity areas. Keep a plan for adding sites, improving resolution or replacing estimates with primary observations.

Prioritize material impact pathways

For each priority location or value-chain activity, document a chain from driver to consequence:

  1. Direct driver: for example, natural ecosystem conversion, water consumption, chemical discharge, harvesting of wild species or an invasive-species pathway.
  2. State change: loss of ecosystem area, reduced connectivity, altered composition, degraded function, changed physical or chemical characteristics, or a change in species abundance or extinction risk.
  3. Dependency or service: pollination, water regulation, soil fertility, coastal protection, flood control or another service on which the business or affected communities rely.
  4. Consequence: operational disruption, legal or transition risk, community effect, financial exposure or a nature-positive opportunity.

Use GRI’s impact-prioritization logic to explain why one pathway is more significant than another. Consider scale (how grave the harm is), scope (how widespread it is), irremediable character (how difficult it is to counteract or make good) and likelihood. Ecological sensitivity, threatened species and ecosystems near tipping points can increase significance even when the affected area is comparatively small.

Use a balanced indicator architecture

Pressure indicators

Pressure measures describe what the organization or its value chain is doing to nature. Useful examples include area of natural ecosystem converted; water withdrawal and consumption; quantity and type of pollutants; quantity and type of wild species harvested and their extinction risk; and the pathways by which invasive alien species may be introduced. Pressure data are often the most available, but they do not show whether an ecosystem has already crossed a critical threshold.

State-of-nature indicators

State measures describe the condition of the affected ecosystem or species. Depending on the pathway, report ecosystem extent, condition, composition, structure, function, connectivity, physical or chemical characteristics, species populations or extinction risk. Compare condition with a defined reference condition and identify the baseline year. The reference should fit the ecosystem and impact question; a single global baseline is not appropriate for every habitat.

Dependency, risk and opportunity indicators

TNFD treats core dependency and impact indicators at the level of the material issue, while core risk and opportunity indicators are reported at organization level. A dependency measure might quantify the portion of production exposed to a water-regulation service or pollination service. Risk and opportunity measures can then show the value, location or exposure associated with that dependency and the response being implemented.

Response indicators

Track actions only when they demonstrate progress against a material pathway. Examples include the area under a verified restoration or avoidance plan, the share of procurement covered by a location-specific biodiversity requirement, or the proportion of priority sites with monitoring and corrective action. Response figures should not substitute for evidence that pressure has fallen or ecological condition has improved.

Candidate measures and what each one tells you

Indicator family Examples Use and qualification
Land and sea-use change Area of natural ecosystem converted; ecosystem extent by type Connects habitat conversion to the affected ecosystem. Report location, ecosystem classification and baseline; do not combine unlike ecosystem types into one net figure.
Water use Water withdrawal and water consumption Useful where abstraction or consumption affects freshwater ecosystems or services. Add basin or ecosystem context and distinguish withdrawal from consumption.
Pollution Quantity and type of pollutants Shows a pressure pathway; pair with receiving ecosystem condition or relevant biological response where measurable.
Wild-species exploitation Quantity and type of species harvested; extinction risk Requires species-level identification and a stated extinction-risk source or method. Country or jurisdiction breakdowns may be needed for relevant products and services.
Invasive alien species Introduction pathways and incidents Describe how the business may introduce or spread invasive species and the controls applied; an incident count alone may miss unmanaged pathways.
Ecosystem condition Composition, function, structure, connectivity, physical or chemical characteristics Measure against a reference condition and disclose the baseline year, method and ecosystem type. There is no single condition score suitable for every business.
Species status Population information and extinction risk Use when the material pathway affects identifiable species. Explain geographic scope, taxonomic coverage and data limitations.

Apply TNFD without treating it as a universal score

TNFD separates metrics into core global, core sector, additional disclosure and internal-assessment categories. Core disclosure metrics are recommended on a comply-or-explain basis: an organization can explain that a metric is not material, or describe measurement limits and how it will address them. TNFD does not expect every organization to report every core metric immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the global measures as a starting structure, then apply sector guidance to the pressures that characterize your business. Core dependency and impact indicators should be selected at the material-issue level through impact pathways. Sector guidance can add measures that a global set would miss. Keep organization-level risk and opportunity reporting distinct from site-level ecological measurements so users can see both the exposure and its location.

TNFD identifies ecosystem condition by ecosystem type and business activity, and species extinction risk, as placeholder indicators. They are not settled, universally comparable single metrics. Select a method that fits the affected ecosystem, disclose the reference condition and limitations, and avoid implying that one score captures all dimensions of nature.

The scale of the measurement challenge is substantial: TNFD’s 2022 initial survey identified more than 3,000 unique nature-related indicators and metrics, with differing definitions for similar measures, inconsistent coverage and uneven treatment of issues. That finding supports a traceable, materiality-led set rather than an ever-growing catalogue.

Use GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024 for impact detail

GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024 applies to organizations of any size, type, sector, geography or reporting experience. When biodiversity is a material topic, report the relevant GRI 3-3 management disclosures and applicable GRI 101 disclosures. The standard is scoped to the organization’s actual biodiversity impacts, not to a requirement to publish every possible metric.

Its direct-driver examples include converted natural ecosystem area; the quantity and type of wild species harvested and their extinction risk; water withdrawal and consumption; pollutant quantity and type; and how invasive alien species may be introduced. For relevant supply-chain products and services, information is broken down by country or jurisdiction.

For state-of-biodiversity reporting, describe the affected ecosystem type, size and condition over time, with a baseline year. Condition can include composition, function, structure, connectivity and physical or chemical characteristics. Species extinction risk and population information may be added where they explain the material impact.

GRI’s management disclosures also make the organization explain how impacts are identified, prioritized, managed and evaluated. An indicator table without this management context cannot show whether the company is responding to its most severe impacts.

Map GRI and TNFD once, then reuse the data

GRI’s mapping announcement says the frameworks use consistent nature concepts and direct-driver definitions, with strong consistency between TNFD core global metrics and related GRI metrics. GRI states that all GRI 101 disclosures are reflected in TNFD recommendations; the difference in the other direction is TNFD material focused exclusively on identifying and assessing nature-related risks and opportunities.

Build one controlled data dictionary with the indicator name, definition, unit, location, ecosystem classification, owner, source, method, baseline, frequency and limitation. Map each field to the relevant GRI disclosure, TNFD metric category and sector guidance. This reduces duplicate collection while preserving the different narrative and risk requirements of each framework.

Handle ESRS E4 carefully

ESRS E4 is the European Sustainability Reporting Standard covering biodiversity and ecosystems. Applicability and detailed requirements depend on the organization, reporting year and applicable EU rules. Verify the current consolidated legal text and the reporting-year requirements before treating an ESRS E4 data point as mandatory. Do not infer a legal obligation from a general biodiversity indicator list.

A practical six-step selection workflow

  1. Set rules and boundary. Confirm applicable GRI, TNFD, sector and legal requirements, the reporting period, organizational boundary and materiality approach.
  2. Locate interfaces with nature. Map owned and managed sites, key suppliers and relevant products or services. Overlay them with ecosystem extent, condition, protected or sensitive areas and available species information.
  3. Prioritize pathways. For each priority location or activity, identify the direct driver, state change, affected species or service, severity and likelihood. Use scale, scope and irremediability to document the decision.
  4. Build a small, traceable set. Include pressure measures where they represent the pathway, state measures where they are decision-useful and measurable, and sector-specific measures where global metrics are incomplete.
  5. Write specifications. Define the unit, spatial boundary, ecosystem classification, baseline or reference condition, frequency, data owner, dataset or protocol, estimation method and limitations for every indicator.
  6. Disclose gaps and improve. If a material metric cannot yet be measured, identify whether the barrier is method, data access or commercial sensitivity. State the planned response, distinguish observations from modeled estimates and describe intended improvements.

Make data quality visible

Prefer primary evidence when practical

Primary field observations, facility records and supplier-specific measurements can be more directly tied to an impact than broad averages. They still need documented sampling design, quality controls, spatial coverage and uncertainty. Primary does not automatically mean complete or unbiased.

Use secondary and modeled data transparently

Secondary geospatial layers, remote sensing and modeled estimates may be necessary for large supply chains or inaccessible areas. Name the dataset, vintage, resolution, model or estimation method, geographic coverage and known limitations. State whether the result is an estimate and how it will be improved.

Design for change detection and assurance

Choose a frequency that can detect meaningful annual change without creating false precision. Keep definitions and methods stable enough for year-on-year comparison, while recording justified methodological changes. TNFD’s emphasis on annual sensitivity and potential independent limited assurance means an indicator should have an auditable owner, source and calculation trail.

Keep ecosystem types and gains separate

Do not aggregate distinct ecosystem types into a net number that allows gains in one type to conceal losses in another. A restored wetland does not automatically offset converted forest, and an increase in one species population does not prove overall biodiversity improvement. Report disaggregated results first; any aggregate view must preserve the underlying location, ecosystem and driver detail.

Add sector-specific measures where the core set misses material issues

Global metrics are a common language, not a complete inventory. A food company may need crop-region water and pollination dependencies; a mining company may need habitat conversion, connectivity and species-risk measures around extraction and transport; a chemicals business may need pollutant loads and receiving-water condition; a shipping business may need invasive-species pathways and sensitive marine areas. Select additions because the business model or value chain makes them material, not because they make the report look comprehensive.

Common selection failures and how to correct them

Reporting only easy activity data

Symptom: the report lists hectares, litres or tonnes but cannot show ecological consequence. Correction: pair the pressure with an ecosystem or species state measure when the pathway and data support it, and explain why a state measure is not yet feasible when it is material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using one score for every location

Symptom: a global biodiversity score hides where impacts occur. Correction: retain site, jurisdiction and ecosystem-level records and aggregate only after material differences remain visible.

Ignoring suppliers and business relationships

Symptom: operational sites appear low-impact while major agricultural, extractive or manufacturing inputs are absent. Correction: screen the value chain, prioritize high-risk products and regions, and disclose incomplete coverage.

Presenting modeled data as observation

Symptom: estimated ecosystem condition is written as if measured in the field. Correction: label modeled results, provide dataset and method limitations, and set an improvement plan.

Claiming compliance from a metric list

Symptom: the company publishes numbers without explaining materiality, management or legal applicability. Correction: map each indicator to the applicable framework, provide the management narrative and verify current jurisdictional rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting restoration as automatic compensation

Symptom: restoration area is used to cancel unrelated losses. Correction: report avoidance, minimization, restoration and residual impacts separately, with location and ecosystem type preserved.

Document each indicator so another reviewer can reproduce it

A practical specification record should contain:

  • Indicator name and the material issue or impact pathway it represents.
  • Unit, calculation formula and whether the value is an absolute amount, intensity or proportion.
  • Spatial boundary, site or jurisdiction, ecosystem classification and value-chain position.
  • Baseline year and reference condition for state measures.
  • Reporting frequency, change threshold and data owner.
  • Primary, secondary, remotely sensed or modeled source; dataset version and collection protocol.
  • Coverage, assumptions, uncertainty and known exclusions.
  • Control checks, approval record and intended improvement.

This record turns a headline number into evidence that can be reviewed, updated and compared without losing its ecological meaning.

What to put in the published report

Present the selected indicators with their locations, ecosystem types, periods, baselines or reference conditions and data-quality labels. Explain why each measure is material, how it connects to a pressure or dependency, and what management action follows. Describe omissions and limitations in plain language, including whether the cause is method, access or commercial sensitivity. Where a TNFD core metric is not material or cannot yet be measured, use the comply-or-explain approach rather than silently omitting it.

A concise management statement from the TNFD–GRI mapping announcement captures the practical goal: organizations should be able to report nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities by leveraging GRI Standards and aligning with the TNFD Recommendations. The useful output is therefore not the largest list of metrics; it is a coherent, location-aware chain of evidence from business activity to nature change and decision.
