Should you choose Xfinity Mobile Unlimited or By the Gig? First check whether your account is still eligible for By the Gig and obtain the price Xfinity would charge that account today. By the Gig is now a legacy option for customers who joined Xfinity Mobile before April 22, 2026. If you move those lines to the current pricing, Xfinity says they must become Mobile Select or Mobile Plus and cannot return to By the Gig pricing.
For an eligible account, compare several months of shared cellular data and hotspot use with your account-specific By the Gig charges, then compare the complete price of Mobile Select or Mobile Plus after any internet discount, taxes and fees. The old published By the Gig example of $20 for a shared 1 GB and $20 for each additional GB or partial GB is useful for understanding the billing structure, but it is not a universal October 2026 quote.

Start with the eligibility question
By the Gig is not an option that every new Xfinity Mobile customer can select. Xfinity’s current support information limits it to customers who joined Xfinity Mobile before April 22, 2026 and still have an account that supports those lines. An older customer may be able to manage an existing By the Gig line, but availability is an account-level condition rather than a guarantee based only on the customer’s join date.
Before comparing prices, sign in to the Xfinity account that pays for the mobile lines and look for the current plan name, shared data allowance and line-level usage. If the account does not show By the Gig, ask Xfinity whether the legacy option is still restorable before changing anything. Do not assume an old bill, a cached web page or a plan name seen on another account applies to yours.

Changing plans can be one-way
Xfinity says customers who move to its latest pricing must change By the Gig lines to Mobile Select or Mobile Plus. Those lines cannot return to By the Gig pricing after that migration. Xfinity’s support guidance also indicates that a customer who removes or changes all By the Gig lines while retaining an older pricing arrangement may need to contact Xfinity to restore the legacy option. Confirm the consequence for your account before accepting a plan change.
What the current plans list
The current unlimited choices have published prices and usage thresholds, but the displayed price is conditional. Xfinity lists Mobile Select at $30 per month and Mobile Plus at $45 per month after the stated introductory offer period. Internet eligibility and discount conditions apply, and taxes and fees are extra.
| Plan | Availability and price | Regular cellular-data term | Hotspot term | Important switching detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| By the Gig | Legacy eligibility for customers who joined before April 22, 2026; confirm the account’s current rate | Shared data across the account; the older Xfinity example was $20 for a shared 1 GB, then $20 for each additional GB or partial GB | An older support page says hotspot use counts as normal data; verify the current account terms | Moving to current pricing means Mobile Select or Mobile Plus and removes the ability to return to By the Gig pricing |
| Mobile Select | $30 per month after the listed introductory period, subject to internet eligibility and discount conditions | After 50 GB, data may be slowed during network congestion | Unlimited hotspot data, with reduced speeds after 15 GB | Available under current pricing; a By the Gig line moved here cannot return to its former By the Gig pricing |
| Mobile Plus | $45 per month after the listed introductory period, subject to internet eligibility and discount conditions | Current plan details differ from Select; confirm the complete account-specific terms | Unlimited hotspot data, with reduced speeds after 50 GB | Available under current pricing; migration from By the Gig is not reversible to By the Gig pricing |
“Unlimited” does not mean that every type of use stays at the same speed. Select’s listed term says that after 50 GB, data may be slowed during network congestion. Both current plans list unlimited hotspot data, but Select applies reduced speeds after 15 GB and Plus after 50 GB. Those thresholds matter if your phone regularly replaces home broadband, supplies a laptop, or serves several devices.
How By the Gig billing works
By the Gig is based on shared cellular data rather than a fixed unlimited-plan price. The relevant number is the total mobile data used by all lines on the account during the billing period. Wi-Fi traffic normally does not consume the mobile allowance, so a household that spends most of its time on home or office Wi-Fi may use far less cellular data than its devices’ overall data counters suggest.

The historical Xfinity support example describes a $20 shared 1 GB price and a $20 charge for each additional GB or partial GB. In that example, a shared total above 1 GB would add another charge even if the extra use did not fill a complete gigabyte. This is a description of an older published structure, not proof that every legacy account still has those exact prices. Your bill may reflect different terms, discounts or account charges.
Hotspot use needs special attention
The older By the Gig guidance says hotspot use counts as normal data. That means tethering a computer or tablet can consume the same shared allowance as phone use on an account that follows those terms. Ask Xfinity whether the statement still applies to your specific legacy account, especially if hotspot use is a major reason you are considering unlimited service.
Why an old rate cannot produce a universal break-even point
A break-even calculation depends on the current By the Gig base price, the account’s charge for extra data, the number of lines sharing the allowance, the amount of cellular data used, taxes, fees and the price you actually qualify for on Select or Plus. Because the current official material does not publish one universal legacy rate for every customer, a single statement such as “unlimited is cheaper after X GB” would be misleading.

Measure how much data you really use
Use several recent billing periods rather than one unusually light or heavy month. A practical review looks like this:

- Record the account’s billed data. In the Xfinity account or mobile billing view, note the total shared cellular data for each completed period and any extra-data charges. Use the bill’s measured total where possible, because it is the figure that determines By the Gig billing.
- Separate cellular and Wi-Fi use. Device data counters can combine or separately display Wi-Fi and mobile traffic, depending on the phone. Use the cellular figure and treat a device counter as a cross-check, not as the bill itself.
- Add every line. Include tablets or other lines that draw from the shared allowance. One person’s low use can hide another line’s streaming, navigation, backup or app-update traffic.
- Mark hotspot months. Record how much tethering occurred and whether it coincided with a large jump in shared data. A household with modest phone use can still exceed a By the Gig allowance through laptop work or video calls.
- Note exceptional events. Travel, a new phone setup, operating-system downloads or a temporary home-internet outage can distort one month. Keep those months in the record, but identify them when judging your normal pattern.
- Check the account after each billing cycle. Xfinity may change plan terms, discounts or fees. Recheck the current plan details before treating an old calculation as a permanent answer.
A useful worksheet has one row per billing period and columns for shared cellular data, hotspot use, By the Gig data charges, taxes and fees, and the total mobile bill. The goal is not to predict usage perfectly; it is to see whether your normal months cluster well below, near or above the allowance represented by your current legacy terms.
Calculate the comparison without overstating precision
First calculate what you actually paid on By the Gig. Start with the account’s base charge, add any shared-data or partial-gigabyte charges, then add taxes, regulatory charges, line fees and other account-specific items. Separately calculate the complete price you would pay for Select or Plus: the applicable post-promotion plan price, the internet-related discount or eligibility adjustment, taxes, fees and any one-time charge.
The historical schedule can illustrate the method. If an account truly had a $20 shared 1 GB charge and $20 for each additional GB or partial GB, a month using 0.8 GB would have the $20 base before taxes and other charges. A month using 2.0 GB would have the $20 base plus one additional $20 charge, for $40 before taxes and other charges. Those are examples of the old structure, not quotes for a current account.
| Question | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|
| What is the current By the Gig base price? | Legacy customers may not all have the historical published amount. |
| How is additional data billed? | Some older terms count an additional partial GB as a full extra unit. |
| How many lines share the data? | The account total, not one phone’s use, drives shared-data charges. |
| What is the qualifying Select or Plus price? | The listed $30 and $45 figures are after the stated introductory period and depend on eligibility and discounts. |
| What taxes and fees apply? | They can make the final bill different from the advertised plan price. |
| Will hotspot speed limits affect your use? | Unlimited hotspot data still has reduced-speed thresholds: 15 GB on Select and 50 GB on Plus. |
Use the same billing period for both sides of the comparison. If your By the Gig bill includes a one-time activation charge, do not treat that one-time item as a recurring monthly plan cost; list it separately. Conversely, do not omit recurring taxes or fees simply because they are not included in the headline plan price.

When By the Gig is usually the better fit
Keeping the legacy plan can make sense when all of the following are true:
- Your account is confirmed eligible and you value preserving the option to remain on the legacy arrangement.
- Several months show low, predictable shared cellular use, with little or no hotspot activity.
- The current By the Gig bill remains below the complete Select and Plus totals after taxes, fees and any qualifying discounts.
- Your usage is unlikely to change because of remote work, frequent travel, streaming away from Wi-Fi or replacing home broadband with tethering.
- You are comfortable monitoring data and investigating a spike before it creates another charge.
By the Gig can be attractive for a household that keeps phones on Wi-Fi most of the time and uses cellular data mainly for navigation, messaging and occasional browsing. The advantage is not the historical $20 figure by itself; it is the relationship between your account’s actual rate and your actual shared usage.

Mobile Select or Mobile Plus deserves closer consideration when:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Your shared data regularly approaches or exceeds the amount covered by your By the Gig terms.
- Usage varies sharply from month to month and a single trip or outage can create an extra-data charge.
- You use hotspot data for a computer, tablet, work connection or multiple devices.
- You prefer a predictable plan price and accept the current plan’s network-management and hotspot thresholds.
- Your account qualifies for an internet discount that materially lowers the Select or Plus total.
Select’s 50 GB congestion-related threshold is important for people who use large amounts of regular cellular data. After 50 GB, Xfinity says data may be slowed during network congestion; it does not say that every user will be slowed continuously. Plus has its own included terms, and its listed hotspot reduced-speed threshold is 50 GB rather than Select’s 15 GB. Choose based on the kind of data you use, not merely the word “unlimited.”
Best Value
A step-by-step decision process
- Confirm eligibility. Verify that the account joined before April 22, 2026 and still shows a By the Gig line or a supportable legacy arrangement.
- Ask for the current legacy price. Request the base shared-data charge, the price for additional data or partial GBs, and any line-specific conditions. Do not use the historical $20 schedule as the account quote.
- Collect at least several completed bills. Record shared cellular data, hotspot use, taxes, fees and the total amount paid.
- Price both current plans. Ask for the post-introductory Select and Plus prices available to your internet account, including the exact discount, taxes and fees.
- Test the usage thresholds. Compare your normal and high-use months with Select’s 50 GB congestion-related threshold and the 15 GB or 50 GB hotspot thresholds.
- Value reversibility. Before moving any By the Gig line, confirm that losing the ability to return to By the Gig pricing is acceptable.
- Choose and document the result. Save the quoted recurring price, effective date, included data terms and any one-time charge. Check the first bill after the change against that record.
Switching pitfalls and how to avoid them
Using the historical rate as a current quote
The older $20 shared 1 GB and $20-per-additional-GB example explains a billing pattern but does not establish your account’s October 2026 rate. Ask for a current account-specific quote.
Comparing a headline price with a final bill
The $30 Select and $45 Plus figures are listed after the stated introductory period and are subject to internet eligibility and discount conditions. Xfinity also says taxes and fees are extra and may change. Compare totals on the same basis.
Ignoring hotspot speed reductions
Unlimited hotspot data can still become slower after 15 GB on Select or 50 GB on Plus. If tethering is central to your decision, estimate hotspot use separately from ordinary phone data.
Changing the last legacy line without checking the consequence
Moving to current pricing closes the route back to By the Gig pricing. Ask what happens if you later regret the change, and whether the account can retain any legacy status before you authorize it.
Assuming a single month represents normal use
A vacation, phone replacement or home-internet outage can produce an atypical bill. Use several periods and identify unusual events rather than basing the choice on the lowest or highest month alone.
Questions to ask Xfinity before you change anything
- Is this account currently eligible to keep By the Gig, and which lines qualify?
- What is the exact recurring By the Gig base charge on this account?
- How are additional data and partial gigabytes billed?
- Does hotspot traffic count against the shared By the Gig allowance for these lines?
- What would the complete monthly total be for Mobile Select and Mobile Plus after the introductory period?
- What internet discount or eligibility condition is included in that quote?
- Which taxes, regulatory charges, activation fees or other line and account charges will appear?
- What are the current regular-data and hotspot thresholds for the selected unlimited plan?
- Will changing this line permanently remove the ability to return to By the Gig pricing?
- If every By the Gig line is removed, what process—if any—could restore the legacy arrangement?
Bottom line
Choose By the Gig only after confirming that your account is eligible and that its current, account-specific bill stays lower than the complete unlimited alternatives for your real usage. Choose Mobile Select or Mobile Plus when variable data or hotspot use makes extra By the Gig charges unpredictable, provided you accept the listed congestion and hotspot thresholds. The decisive facts are your measured shared cellular data, your actual legacy rate, the qualifying current-plan price and the permanent loss of By the Gig pricing after migration—not an old advertised rate or the word “unlimited” alone.
