Both Xbox Series X and Series S play digital games. Choose Series S if its 1440p design target, storage options and local price fit your setup. Choose Series X if you want its native-4K positioning, more built-in storage capacity, or the option of a disc-drive model. If you want digital-only play but prefer Series X, Xbox also lists a 1TB all-digital configuration. Check the exact model and local price before buying, since options vary by market.
What matters most for a digital-game library?
For a digital-only buyer, the practical choice usually comes down to display target, storage capacity and price. A disc drive is not required to play digital games, but it can preserve the option of using physical games or discs later.

Choose based on your display and games
Pick Series S if 1440p suits your setup
Xbox positions Series S around a 1440p design target and says it can upscale to 4K. That can make it a sensible fit if you do not prioritize native-4K positioning. Do not treat the target as a promise that every title renders at that resolution.

Pick Series X if native-4K positioning matters
Xbox positions Series X for native 4K. That is the clearer fit if that target is important to you, but actual resolution and frame rate vary by game. Xbox’s “up to 120 FPS” capability also depends on supported content and a compatible display.
Choose enough storage for the games you keep installed
Xbox lists Series S in 512GB and 1TB configurations, and Series X in 1TB and 2TB configurations. These are total listed capacities, not a promise about how much space remains available to install games. Think about how many titles you want installed at once, then compare the exact configuration available locally; the larger option is not listed in every market.

Adding storage later
Both console lines support the Xbox Storage Expansion Card, which Xbox says matches the internal SSD experience. Xbox also lists USB 3.1 external HDD support, but does not make the same performance claim for a USB hard drive. The official Xbox console comparison covers the listed expansion options.

Series S is all-digital and does not support disc-based games. Series X buyers can choose a disc-drive configuration, while Xbox also lists a 1TB all-digital Series X. So digital play does not require Series S: choose based on whether you want the Series X configuration, and whether access to discs matters to you. Check the specific product listing, because not every Series X has a drive.

Check game compatibility and local price before choosing
Xbox says Smart Delivery provides the best available version for the console you play on for supported games purchased once. Owned digital games in the backward-compatible catalog can be installed on these consoles; that qualification matters, so do not assume every older title is included.
Xbox says prices and options vary by market and retailer. The product pages do not establish a current price or price gap that applies everywhere. Compare the exact storage and drive configuration available from local retailers rather than relying on a general model name.
