Xbox also sells an all-digital Series X, so confirm the exact configuration before buying.
Either console can use the Xbox Store and eligible Game Pass discounts. The main deal difference is that a disc-drive Series X gives you a second way to find games; Series S does not play discs.

Which Xbox is better for digital game deals?
For a digital-only buyer, the Series S can make sense when its display target and storage meet your needs. The Series X does not unlock better access to Xbox Store digital sales, but its disc-drive configuration adds the option to buy, borrow, or use compatible physical games. That matters if you are willing to compare disc prices with digital offers.

Xbox’s console comparison describes the models and configurations. Since Series X versions differ, do not infer that a Series X listing includes a drive from its name alone.
Is Series S worth it if you only buy digital games?
It can be, if you are comfortable with a disc-free console, the 1440p design, and the storage configuration sold in your market. If you already own compatible digital games, Xbox says those in its backward-compatible catalog appear in your install library. This does not make disc-based games playable on Series S.

The Series X can still be the better choice for a digital buyer who wants native 4K or more internal-storage choices. Its disc drive is an added option only on drive-equipped versions, not a requirement for buying from the Xbox Store.
Can Series S play used or borrowed games?
No. Series S has no disc drive and cannot play physical game discs. That means no used discs, borrowed discs, or physical-game bargains on that console.

A disc-drive Series X can play compatible physical games. For backward-compatible disc games, Xbox says the disc must remain in the drive to play. Digital ownership also carries over for titles in Xbox’s backward-compatible catalog; compatibility is not universal for every older game. See Xbox backward compatibility for the applicable catalog and details.
How to find Xbox digital game deals
- Open the regional Xbox Store deals page. Search the live listings for your country and compare the exact game edition you want. The US Game Deals page showed 749 listed games when accessed in 2026; that count and the offers change, and US listings do not establish prices elsewhere.
- Check the edition and final offer. Compare like with like—standard, deluxe, or other editions can differ. Do not assume a headline discount applies to every edition or region.
- Add games to your wish list. Xbox describes wish lists and sale notifications as Store features, which can help you spot a price change without repeatedly checking listings. See Xbox wish lists and sale notifications.
- Compare eligible Game Pass member pricing. Confirm both that your plan qualifies and that the specific title is included in the offer before treating a discount as available to you.
- If you are considering Series X with a drive, compare physical copies too. Check the exact drive-equipped configuration and compare a compatible disc price against the digital price; availability and prices vary by retailer and region.
Do Game Pass members get discounts on Xbox games?
Xbox advertises discounts of up to 50% off select games for Ultimate, Premium, and Essential members, and up to 20% off select games in the Game Pass library for some membership tiers. These are maximum discounts on selected eligible titles, not a blanket reduction. Xbox says discounts are based on Microsoft Store prices, cannot be combined with other offers, and are not redeemable for cash. Check the current Game Pass benefits and terms for your plan and game.

Subscription access and ownership are different. Game Pass offers access to a changing catalog; if you want a game to remain available to you, compare its purchase price during a sale with the subscription cost over the period you expect to play. The value depends on the games you actually use and the current plan terms.

How much storage do you need for digital Xbox games?
There is no single storage amount that suits every digital library. Xbox lists Series S options with 512GB or 1TB and Series X options with 1TB or 2TB, depending on the version. If you keep many games installed at once, a larger configuration can reduce the need to uninstall and reinstall games. Compare the console’s current SKU and price rather than assuming all versions have the same capacity.
Best Value
Xbox also offers a storage expansion card that it says matches the custom SSD experience. Factor its current price into the total if the internal capacity you are considering seems too restrictive. Xbox’s expansion-card information describes the option.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Series S if you buy digitally, do not need discs, and are satisfied with its 1440p design and available storage.
- Choose a disc-drive Series X if native 4K, a larger-storage option, or access to compatible physical-game deals is worth the higher capability tier to you.
- Consider an all-digital Series X if you want the Series X configuration but do not need discs; compare its current price and storage with the other models rather than assuming it includes a drive.
Before deciding, compare current console offers and the games you actually plan to buy. A digital-only strategy works on either console; only a drive-equipped Series X can add physical-game shopping to that strategy.
