Xbox and PlayStation purchases do not generally transfer between companies’ stores. A title-by-title check is more reliable than choosing by brand or assuming that an entire older library will work.
Start with the games you would actually miss
Make a shortlist of the games that matter most, rather than counting every title in your account. For each one, note its original console generation, whether you own it digitally or on disc, and whether a particular save, expansion, or multiplayer community is important to you.

- Xbox: Series X|S supports Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Compatibility with the older generations is selective; check the official Xbox backward-compatible games list for each title.
- PlayStation: PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, but Sony lists exceptions and warns that some compatible games may have missing features or unexpected behavior. Check Sony’s PS4-on-PS5 compatibility guidance.
Do not infer compatibility from a game’s franchise, generation, or the fact that it appears in a platform family’s store. If a game is essential and is not clearly covered by the platform’s compatibility information, check its publisher’s support page before deciding.

Check whether your discs will work on the model you plan to buy
Digital and disc ownership are not interchangeable when choosing a console. A disc-based library can rule out a digital-only model, even if the game itself is supported.

Check the exact console model and its drive arrangement in your market. A disc may be required as proof of ownership even when the game installs to internal storage.
Do not confuse game ownership with save transfer
A game license, a save file, cross-play, and cross-save are separate things. Owning a game on one platform does not by itself grant a copy on the other; a save may also stay tied to its original platform or account.

Moving within PlayStation
Sony documents transfer options for moving from PS4 or another PS5, including supported games and save data. Eligibility depends on compatibility and source/account conditions. Sony also says PS5 saved data cannot be copied to USB. Review Sony’s transfer instructions for the relevant transfer route.
Moving progress between Xbox and PlayStation
Cross-platform progress depends on the game and its publisher. Microsoft’s Store policy says developers may choose whether game progress syncs across gaming networks; Microsoft Store-managed digital add-on content generally may not roam across them. Square Enix, for example, says Outriders progress does not transfer between PlayStation and Xbox. Check publisher support for every game whose save you want to keep: Microsoft Store Policies, version 7.20 and Square Enix’s Outriders support answer.

Price upgrades and subscription access game by game
A PS4 purchase may have a PS5 upgrade, but Sony says the offer can be free, paid, or time-limited depending on the title. A disc-based upgrade may require a PS5 with a disc drive and the original disc. Sony also says a playable PS4 game claimed through PlayStation Plus can be downloaded on PS5 while the player remains a member. Check the game’s current terms and your region in Sony’s PlayStation ecosystem guidance.
Do not treat a subscription catalog entry as permanent ownership or assume a title will be included on the service you choose. Catalogs, membership terms, and local pricing can change; verify the current service information for your country and the exact title before assigning it value in your decision.

Make the decision using a short, weighted comparison
- Mark must-keep games. Separate essential titles from games you might replay someday.
- Verify compatibility individually. Check the relevant Xbox or PlayStation list, then the publisher’s support information for any unclear title.
- Match the console to your format. Confirm whether each essential game is digital or disc, and whether the model has the drive you need.
- Check continuity needs. Verify save transfer, cross-save, cross-play, add-ons, and upgrade terms separately for the games where those matter.
- Compare local total cost. Add the console model that fits your library, any games you would need to repurchase, and any subscription you actually plan to use. Prices and availability vary by country and model, so check current local listings rather than relying on a general price comparison.
If your most important compatible games are already on Xbox, Xbox is the practical starting point; if they are on PlayStation, PS5 is. If your priority titles are split, compare the cost and inconvenience of rebuilding each side—not just the number of games in each account.

What not to assume about new compatibility announcements
Microsoft’s August 26, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement described an Xbox Insider test of a disc-to-digital feature for most Xbox One and Series X disc games. The announcement says a supported disc can be used to claim a digital entitlement by launching it on an Xbox One or Series X, while the physical disc continues to work. It does not establish general availability or eligibility for every disc. Check the announcement and current rollout details before relying on it: Xbox Wire: Your Discs. Now Also Digital.

A separate Xbox Wire post dated July 22, 2026 described an early-release backward-compatibility-on-PC program that began with four original Xbox games; it said existing digital console licenses for those games carried over to PC or supported handhelds. That limited PC program is not a general Xbox-to-PlayStation transfer and does not establish that all Xbox games work on PC. See Xbox Wire’s PC compatibility announcement.
