Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose the ASUSTOR LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2+ (AS6702T v2) if your network can use dual 5GbE or you specifically want four M.2 NVMe slots. Choose the Synology DS224+ if its documented DSM tools for file sharing, photos, backup, snapshots and surveillance better match your day-to-day needs. Both have two SATA drive bays, so neither is a higher-capacity option by default; your drive plan, network and software needs should decide the purchase.
This is a specification-based comparison, not a controlled performance test. Link speeds and vendor comparisons against earlier models do not establish which NAS will be faster in your own setup.

First, verify which LOCKERSTOR 2 you are comparing
The model in this comparison is the ASUSTOR LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2+ (AS6702T v2). It is not the earlier LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2, model AS6702T. The similar names are easy to confuse in retailer listings and older coverage, but the models have different network specifications: ASUSTOR’s earlier Gen2 specification lists dual 2.5GbE, while the Gen2+ model has dual 5GbE. Confirm the model number on the listing and product label before ordering.
ASUSTOR’s LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2+ product page and Gen2+ datasheet identify the newer unit as AS6702T v2. The English datasheet is listed with a January 9, 2026 release date. Its product page explicitly says this two-bay model does not support 10GbE. The older model’s specifications are on ASUSTOR’s earlier LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2 page. The Synology product here is the DiskStation DS224+.

That version check affects more than the name on the carton. A review or accessory recommendation written for the AS6702T can describe 2.5GbE hardware rather than the v2’s 5GbE ports. Check the complete model string, not just “Lockerstor 2 Gen2,” whenever you compare prices, firmware notes or compatibility information.
What the specifications mean for everyday use
| Decision factor | ASUSTOR LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2+ (AS6702T v2) | Synology DS224+ | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive bays | 2 × 2.5- or 3.5-inch SATA III | 2 × 3.5-inch SATA HDD or 2.5-inch SATA SSD | Both are two-bay systems. Capacity depends on the installed drives and storage arrangement. |
| Processor | Intel Celeron N5105, four cores, 2.0GHz base and up to 2.9GHz | Intel Celeron J4125, four cores, 2.0GHz base and up to 2.7GHz turbo | Clock speed and processor model alone do not determine NAS performance for your applications. |
| Included memory | 4GB DDR4-2933 SO-DIMM; maximum 16GB | 2GB DDR4 non-ECC; maximum 6GB (2GB + 4GB) | ASUSTOR lists more included and maximum memory. Check app needs and the manufacturer’s memory guidance before upgrading. |
| Ethernet | 2 × 5GbE | 2 × 1GbE | The higher nominal link rate helps only if the rest of the network and the workload can use it. |
| M.2 storage | 4 × M.2 PCIe 3.0 NVMe slots | No M.2 slots listed in the product hardware specifications | ASUSTOR is the option for buyers who specifically want onboard NVMe storage choices. |
| USB | 2 × USB 10Gbps and 1 × USB 2.0 | 2 × USB 3.2 Gen 1 | ASUSTOR lists higher-speed USB ports; connected device and use still matter. |
| Storage modes | Single, JBOD, RAID 0 and RAID 1 | SHR, Basic, JBOD, RAID 0 and RAID 1; migration and expansion limits are documented by Synology | Choose based on the storage management approach you want, not the count of modes alone. |

Pick ASUSTOR if multi-gig networking or NVMe is a real requirement
Dual 5GbE needs a capable network path
The AS6702T v2 has two 5GbE ports, compared with two 1GbE ports on the DS224+. That is a substantial difference in the listed interface rates, but it is not a promise of a particular file-transfer speed. A client, switch or direct network path must support the relevant multi-gig rate; cabling, drive or SSD configuration, protocol overhead, concurrent activity and the files being transferred also affect results.
If your computers and network equipment are limited to 1GbE, the NAS’s faster ports will not by themselves make transfers run at 5GbE. Account for any networking upgrades in the total cost only if you actually need them. The ASUSTOR page describes this two-bay v2 as dual 5GbE and says it does not support 10GbE, so it should not be treated as a 10GbE model.
Also clarify what “dual” means for your plan. Two ports give you connection options, but they do not automatically double the speed of one file copy. Any aggregation, failover or multi-client benefit depends on the NAS operating system, switch and client configuration. A single desktop with a 1GbE adapter remains limited by that adapter even when the NAS has two 5GbE sockets.
Four M.2 slots give another storage option
The four M.2 PCIe 3.0 NVMe slots are a hardware distinction for people who want to add NVMe drives. The DS224+ product hardware specifications list no M.2 slots. That difference may matter for a planned SSD configuration, but the presence of NVMe slots does not prove that caching will improve every workload. Decide what you expect the SSDs to do, check the current manufacturer requirements for your intended configuration, and account for their cost separately from the two SATA bays.

NVMe can be useful when a particular application repeatedly accesses a working set that benefits from low latency, but it does not turn a slow client network into a fast one. It also introduces another storage component to monitor and replace. If your NAS is mainly a media archive over 1GbE, paying for four SSDs may add little practical value; if you run virtual machines, databases or many concurrent users, investigate the supported SSD and volume design in detail.

ASUSTOR lists 4GB of included DDR4-2933 SO-DIMM memory and a 16GB maximum. Synology lists 2GB of non-ECC DDR4 memory and a 6GB maximum, configured as 2GB plus 4GB. More memory can be relevant to the applications and number of services you intend to run, but it is not a standalone performance verdict. Synology notes a support policy for non-Synology expansion memory, so check its current guidance before buying an upgrade.
For peripherals, ASUSTOR lists two USB 10Gbps ports plus one USB 2.0 port; Synology lists two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports. If you routinely connect external devices and their transfer rate matters, compare the port specifications with those devices. Otherwise, this difference may not be a deciding factor. A USB backup disk, UPS connection or printer can work perfectly well without the fastest available port, while a high-speed external SSD is more likely to expose the difference.
Pick Synology if its DSM workflows fit your jobs
Synology’s product material documents DSM features for file sharing, backup, snapshots, photo organization and surveillance. That gives a buyer a concrete software-led reason to choose the DS224+: match the listed tools to the tasks you want to perform rather than deciding from the enclosure specifications alone. The DS224+ page also lists Btrfs and ext4 filesystems.
For surveillance, Synology says the DS224+ includes two camera licenses; additional licenses require purchase. Check the current license requirements and package details for the surveillance setup you plan to build. Do not assume the included licenses cover every camera or deployment. Count cameras, recording resolution, retention time and whether a second site needs its own license before treating the NAS as a complete surveillance budget.
Snapshots are a point-in-time recovery feature, not a replacement for an off-device backup. Likewise, a photo application can organize originals without protecting them from deletion or hardware loss. Ask where the second copy will live and how you would restore it before choosing an application based only on its feature list.

ASUSTOR’s product material presents ADM and promotes LooksGood, including hardware decoding for 10-bit 4K H.265. Those are relevant features to investigate if they fit your intended use. The available specifications do not independently rank ADM and DSM for ease of use, app quality, or performance. Review the current software and app support for the tasks that matter to you before buying.
Plan for two drives, redundancy and future capacity
Each system has two SATA bays. That means the models have the same bay count, not necessarily the same usable capacity: the result depends on the drives and storage mode you choose. Neither is a multi-bay expansion solution that adds internal bays later; plan on replacing drives or changing appliances if you outgrow the system’s two-bay layout.
The listed modes include single-drive or basic arrangements, JBOD, RAID 0 and RAID 1; Synology also lists SHR. A mode name does not tell the whole story about usable space, migration or expansion. Synology documents migration and expansion limits, so read those rules against your likely upgrade path rather than assuming every arrangement can grow in the same way. With two equal drives, RAID 1 generally prioritizes a mirrored copy and fault tolerance, while RAID 0 prioritizes combined capacity and throughput at the cost of losing the volume if either drive fails. Your actual usable space is also lower than the decimal capacity printed on drive labels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Choose drives as part of the NAS purchase. Synology explicitly says storage drives are sold separately. ASUSTOR’s datasheet lists the enclosure and accessories rather than drive models. Verify the specific seller’s box contents, then budget for compatible drives.
- Decide whether you value redundancy or capacity more. The two-bay layouts make the drive arrangement consequential. Compare the usable capacity and failure protection of the mode you intend to use before committing to a drive pair.
- Keep a separate backup. RAID or another multi-drive arrangement is not a substitute for an independent backup against accidental deletion, malware, theft, fire or device failure. Synology documents backup tools, but the protection still depends on having a suitable separate destination and a tested recovery plan.
- Check compatibility for exact drives. Drive support can depend on the model and configuration. Consult the current compatibility information from the NAS manufacturer before selecting particular HDDs or SSDs.
Replacing disks is a planned maintenance task, not an instant capacity upgrade. Check whether the manufacturer’s documented procedure supports your intended migration, whether a volume must be rebuilt one disk at a time and how long a rebuild might take. Keep another backup during any rebuild because the remaining disk is carrying the only live copy of data in a degraded array.
Compare total cost and local warranty, not just enclosure prices
There is no single meaningful total price without a retailer, region, drive capacity and storage plan. Compare the two enclosures at the prices available to you, then add the same intended drive plan to each. If you are considering NVMe on the ASUSTOR, include those SSDs as an optional additional purchase rather than treating the slots as included storage. If ASUSTOR’s 5GbE is a reason for choosing it, include any network hardware your existing setup lacks; a buyer whose network remains 1GbE may not need an upgrade.
A fair comparison should include two compatible SATA drives, any M.2 SSDs, a multi-gig switch or adapter only when required, and a replacement or backup drive plan. A NAS-compatible UPS is an optional protection purchase: mention it if your power is unreliable, but verify compatibility for the exact unit rather than assuming every USB UPS offers graceful shutdown.

Warranty terms need the same regional check. Synology lists a two-year hardware warranty and an optional extension to four years in eligible regions of North America and Europe. ASUSTOR advertises a first-class warranty in product material, but exact regional terms are not established there. Ask the seller or manufacturer what applies to the specific unit, purchase location and date.

What the performance figures do—and do not—show
Synology’s DS224+ page reports internal-test results against its own earlier DS220+: 62% more responses per second in web applications, 52% faster file indexing in Synology Drive and 28% faster image indexing in Synology Photos. Synology says results come from internal testing and actual performance may vary with test environment, usage and configuration. These figures are comparisons with the predecessor, not with the ASUSTOR LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2+.
Likewise, the processor, memory and Ethernet specifications are not a matched test of the two products. A valid speed comparison would need the same drives, network, clients, protocol, configuration and workload. No controlled head-to-head result is established by the cited product material, so there is no evidence-based universal speed winner here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Power figures are not a controlled efficiency ranking
Synology lists 14.69W in access and 4.41W in HDD hibernation for the DS224+. ASUSTOR’s datasheet lists 18.8W in operation, 12.9W in disk hibernation and 1.18W in sleep. These are manufacturer-listed figures, and the measurement conditions and configurations may differ. Do not use them as a direct efficiency comparison or assume your actual consumption will match them. Installed disks, NVMe drives, network activity, fan behavior and sleep settings can all change the result.
A practical decision checklist
- Confirm the exact ASUSTOR model. Look for “AS6702T v2” if you mean the Gen2+; AS6702T without “v2” is the earlier Gen2 model.
- Map your network. Check the NAS, switch or direct connection, client network adapters and cabling. If the whole path cannot use multi-gig, dual 5GbE is less likely to influence your everyday transfers.
- List the apps you need. Match file sharing, backup, photos, snapshots, surveillance or media needs to the current ADM and DSM offerings. Check surveillance camera-license requirements if relevant.
- Choose your drive arrangement and capacity target. Compare the usable capacity and recovery implications of the storage mode you expect to use, and check Synology’s documented migration and expansion limits if those matter to your plan.
- Build an apples-to-apples budget. Include the NAS, compatible SATA drives, any optional NVMe drives, and network upgrades only if required. Check whether either exact retail listing includes drives.
- Verify support terms locally. Confirm current drive compatibility, memory guidance, box contents and warranty coverage for the product and region you will buy.
- Plan recovery. Decide where an independent backup will live, how often it will run and how you will test a restore. Do this before filling the NAS with irreplaceable files.
Recommendation by buyer type
- Choose ASUSTOR LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2+ (AS6702T v2) when dual 5GbE, four M.2 NVMe slots, more listed memory or the faster USB specification addresses a real need in your setup.
- Choose Synology DS224+ when its documented DSM workflows for files, photos, backup, snapshots or surveillance are the better fit, and dual 1GbE meets your network needs.
- Keep comparing rather than declaring a winner if your main criterion is absolute speed, noise, power efficiency or app performance. The manufacturer specifications here do not provide a controlled comparison on those measures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the ASUSTOR LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2+ a 10GbE NAS?
No. The AS6702T v2 lists two 5GbE ports, and ASUSTOR explicitly says the two-bay model does not support 10GbE. The older AS6702T Gen2 lists dual 2.5GbE, so verify the model number.

Do either of these NAS units include hard drives?
The Synology page states that storage drives are sold separately. ASUSTOR’s datasheet lists the enclosure and accessories rather than drive models. Check the retailer’s exact package and budget for compatible SATA drives.
Which model is better for an NVMe-based setup?
The ASUSTOR has four M.2 PCIe 3.0 NVMe slots. The DS224+ hardware specifications list no M.2 slots. NVMe drives are still an additional cost, and their benefit depends on the workload and supported configuration.
Will dual 5GbE make one file copy five times faster?
Not necessarily. The client adapter, switch, cabling, drives, protocol and concurrent activity must all support the faster path. A 1GbE client remains limited to 1GbE, and the ports do not establish a universal throughput result.
How many surveillance cameras can the DS224+ run without extra licenses?
Synology lists two included camera licenses. Additional cameras require purchased licenses, so check the current license terms and your planned camera count before budgeting a surveillance installation.
Is RAID 1 a backup?
No. RAID 1 can preserve availability when one drive fails, but it does not protect against accidental deletion, malware, theft, fire or a failed NAS. Maintain a separate, tested backup.
The Bottom Line
The choice is straightforward when you tie it to a real requirement: buy the ASUSTOR LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2+ (AS6702T v2) for dual 5GbE or four M.2 NVMe slots, and buy the Synology DS224+ when DSM’s documented file, photo, backup, snapshot and surveillance workflows fit better. Compare the same drives, accessories, network needs and local warranty for both, and do not treat vendor specifications as a controlled speed test.
