These are specification-based recommendations; no independent hands-on speed or battery comparison is available.
First check the model name. The Alexa Tablet 8 is a new 2026 product and is not the same device as Amazon’s Fire HD 8 (2024, 12th Generation). Confusing those two produces the wrong display, operating-system, storage and expansion expectations.

Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 (2026)
Amazon’s 2026 announcement describes the Alexa Tablet 8 as an 8.7-inch aluminum tablet weighing 329 grams. It has an eight-core processor, Wi-Fi 6, Alexa+ built in and up to 14 hours of video playback according to Amazon’s published claim. The announced US starting configuration is 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage for $229.99.
Amazon’s technical specification page identifies the processor as MediaTek MT8189 and the software as Android 16. It lists a 1340 × 800 IPS display, 4GB LPDDR5 memory, 64GB or 128GB internal storage, a 5-megapixel front camera and an 8-megapixel rear camera. No external-storage slot is listed in that specification table, so do not assume that a microSD card is supported.

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2024, 12th Generation)
The Fire HD 8 is an older, separate product family. Amazon lists an 8-inch 1280 × 800 display, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, and microSD expansion up to 1TB. Its documentation identifies Fire OS 8 and Android 11 API level, with up to 13 hours of battery life.
Amazon UK announced launch prices of £99.99 for the 3GB/32GB model and £124.99 for 4GB/64GB in October 2024. Those were UK launch figures, not a current price guarantee. Fire HD 8 specifications must not be substituted for Alexa Tablet 8 specifications.

When Alexa+ and Amazon services are central
The Alexa Tablet 8 is the straightforward choice when you want Alexa+ built into the tablet and already rely on Amazon’s reading, video, music or shopping services. Amazon presents the device for reading, browsing and streaming while travelling. Android 16 is the stated software platform, so verify that every app you need is available and behaves as expected in the relevant Android distribution before buying.

That advantage depends on the configuration you actually purchase: 64GB may fill quickly if you download video, games or large reading libraries, and the technical table does not list removable storage.
When iPadOS and Apple devices are already part of your routine
The iPad mini is the better fit if your phone, computer, cloud storage, messages and purchased apps are already tied to Apple’s platform. Apple lists the A17 Pro chip, iPadOS and support for Apple Intelligence. Those are platform capabilities, not proof that the iPad mini is faster in every task; no independent comparative benchmark is available here.
Apple describes the iPad mini as an ultraportable full iPad experience. That is Apple’s positioning statement, not an independent quality assessment. The practical benefit is continuity: familiar iPad apps, established account syncing and accessories may matter more than a specification advantage in isolation.
Check the apps that cannot be compromised
Before ordering either tablet, write down the five apps or services you use most. Check their current tablet support, offline-download behavior, parental-control options and subscription requirements on the exact operating system. A device that has the right screen but lacks one essential app is not a bargain.

Display: larger diagonal or finer detail?
The Alexa Tablet 8’s 8.7-inch panel is physically a little larger than the iPad mini’s 8.3-inch display. That can make web pages, subtitles and two-column reading layouts feel less cramped. Its listed 1340 × 800 resolution and 180 PPI are modest, so small type and high-detail photographs will not be rendered as finely as on Apple’s panel.
The iPad mini lists 2266 × 1488 resolution at 326 ppi, along with P3 wide color, True Tone and 500-nit brightness. Those specifications favor crisp text, detailed comics and photos, and color-aware creative work. A higher specification does not tell you which screen surface, color temperature or scaling you personally prefer, so view both if possible.
Reading
For novels and long articles, both sizes are compact enough for one-handed use, but the experience differs. The Alexa Tablet 8 offers more diagonal area; the iPad mini offers denser type and more pixels for maps, PDFs and illustrated books. Consider the fonts used by your preferred reading app and whether you often zoom documents.
Streaming
Streaming quality also depends on the service app, account plan, available codecs and your network. The published specifications establish screen size and resolution, not a comparative assessment of speakers, sustained streaming battery life or picture quality in a room. Treat Amazon’s “up to 14 hours of video playback” as the company’s stated maximum claim, not a guaranteed result for every brightness, network and app setting.
Performance, battery and cameras: what is and is not established
Performance
The Alexa Tablet 8 uses MediaTek’s MT8189 with eight cores and 4GB LPDDR5 memory. The iPad mini uses Apple’s A17 Pro. Those are different hardware and software platforms; the specifications alone cannot establish which device opens a particular app faster, sustains gaming performance longer or receives updates for a longer period. No comparative laboratory or hands-on test is documented here.
Battery expectations
Amazon announces up to 14 hours of video playback for Alexa Tablet 8. The figure is a manufacturer claim whose real result changes with brightness, wireless use, volume, video resolution and background activity. Fire HD 8’s separate documentation says up to 13 hours, and that number belongs only to the 2024 Fire HD 8.
The cited iPad mini specifications do not provide a directly comparable playback-hour figure in the available material. Do not turn the two manufacturers’ different disclosure methods into a battery-life ranking.

Cameras and calls
The Alexa Tablet 8 specification lists a 5MP front camera and an 8MP rear camera. The cited iPad mini specification page should be consulted for the exact camera features relevant to your calls or scanning workflow. Neither set of numbers, by itself, predicts image quality in low light or video-call performance on a congested network.
Storage and portability should be decided together
Alexa Tablet 8 configurations are listed at 64GB and 128GB, with no external-storage option stated. If you download films for flights, keep large games installed or store many comics and audiobooks, estimate your library size before choosing 64GB. Streaming-only households may be comfortable with less local space.
The iPad mini offers 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. Its 128GB base is more generous than the Alexa Tablet 8’s announced entry configuration, while the larger tiers reduce the need to constantly delete offline content. Cloud storage can help either platform, but it does not replace local capacity when travelling without reliable internet.
Apple lists the Wi-Fi iPad mini at 293 grams and the Wi-Fi + Cellular version at 297 grams, compared with Amazon’s 329-gram Alexa Tablet 8. That difference is noticeable in a small bag, but cases, keyboards, chargers and cellular plans can outweigh the tablet-only figures.
Stylus, notes and creative work
Apple explicitly documents compatibility with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). If handwritten notes, markup, sketching or precise selection is a primary task, that gives the iPad mini a defined accessory and software path. Budget for the Pencil separately and confirm which model supports the features you need.

No compatible stylus for Alexa Tablet 8 is established by the specifications cited here. You may still use touch or a generic capacitive stylus for simple tapping, but do not buy it expecting Apple Pencil-style pressure sensitivity, palm rejection or a supported drawing workflow.

Because those announcements are two years apart, they are useful orientation points rather than current shopping quotes. Retail discounts, taxes, regional availability, cellular fees and replacement-cycle timing can change the calculation. Check the live price in your country and compare equal storage, connectivity and warranty terms. A cheaper tablet with half the storage is not automatically the better value.
Recommendations by type of buyer
Choose Alexa Tablet 8 when
- Alexa+ built in is a deciding feature.
- You use Amazon’s media and reading services more than Apple’s.
- You prefer an 8.7-inch screen for browsing and streaming.
- Android 16 fits the apps and devices in your home.
- The announced lower entry price matters and 64GB is sufficient for your offline library.
Choose iPad mini when
- You already rely on iPhone, iPad or Mac services and want the least ecosystem friction.
- Sharp text, high pixel density, wide color and True Tone matter for reading, photos or documents.
- You need at least 128GB or want 256GB/512GB capacity.
- You will use Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (USB-C).
- You want the A17 Pro and iPadOS platform, accepting the higher announced starting price.
Choose neither until you verify an essential requirement
- Your main app has uncertain support on the target operating system.
- You need cellular connectivity but have not included the recurring data cost.
- You expect expandable storage on Alexa Tablet 8 despite no slot being listed.
- You require a supported pressure-sensitive pen but have not budgeted for the iPad mini and Pencil.
A practical decision process before you buy

- Test the screen if possible. Read small text, view a dark video scene and hold each tablet in your normal reading position. The larger diagonal and the denser panel solve different problems.

For an Amazon-centered household seeking Alexa+ and a lower announced starting price, the Alexa Tablet 8 is the logical starting point, provided its 64GB/128GB limits and app support fit your use. For an Apple-centered buyer who values a sharper display, more storage choices or supported Pencil accessories, the iPad mini justifies its higher launch price. If the device in the shopping cart is labeled Fire HD 8, stop and re-evaluate: it is the 2024 model, not the Alexa Tablet 8.
