Choose the platform that supports the games you actually plan to play, works with the hardware you own or want, and fits your multiplayer group and total budget. Before buying hardware or a game, make a shortlist and check each title’s platform, edition, online requirements, cross-play, and save-transfer support. There is no universal winner between Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox.
Start by checking your must-play games
Write down the games you expect to play, then confirm that each is available on the platform and in the edition you want. Availability and features are title-specific: a game may support cross-play but not cross-save, or may offer different editions or account requirements on different platforms. Check the game’s current store listing and official support information before you commit.

- Cross-play: Can you play with friends using their platforms?
- Cross-save or cross-progression: Will progress carry between the devices you use?
- Accounts and editions: Does the game require an additional account, and does the platform include the content you expect?
Do not assume that buying a game for one platform gives you a copy on another. For PlayStation Studios PC releases, PlayStation says PC and console versions are separate products and saves cannot currently transfer between PC and PS4 or PS5 versions (PlayStation PC Games FAQ).

| Choice | Hardware and library considerations | Features to check |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Steam is a PC game storefront, so you need a PC that meets the requirements of each game. PlayStation Studios PC games are available for purchase through Steam or Epic Games when offered; that does not mean every PlayStation game is on Steam or that a console purchase converts to a PC copy (PlayStation PC Games FAQ). | Check each game’s PC requirements and whether it supports your preferred controls. For PlayStation Studios PC titles, PSN is not required for every game, but select titles require an account; controller features also vary by title, according to the PlayStation PC Games FAQ. |
| PlayStation | You need compatible PlayStation hardware. Consider whether you want a disc-capable or digital-only model and whether your existing games or accessories are compatible with the model you choose. | Most PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. Plan benefits, including catalog and streaming features, vary by tier; check the current plan details for your region on the PlayStation Plus support page. |
| Xbox | You need compatible Xbox hardware. Microsoft distinguishes digital-only and disc-capable Series X|S hardware in its Xbox Series X|S fact sheet; if you own discs, check the exact model before buying. | For older games, verify the exact title: Microsoft’s September 2020 fact sheet documents backward compatibility for existing Xbox One games and backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles, not every release from those generations. Game Pass supported devices, included games, and simultaneous-use limits depend on the current plan, so confirm the plan terms before relying on access across devices (Microsoft Services Agreement). |
Should you get a gaming PC or a console?
Steam makes sense when PC gaming suits you and your computer can run the games on your shortlist. It may offer more flexibility in hardware and controls, but the relevant question is whether your particular PC meets each game’s requirements—not whether PC gaming is generally more powerful or cheaper.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
A console may fit better if you prefer a dedicated gaming device and the games, friends, or existing library you care about point to PlayStation or Xbox. Compare the precise model and format you would buy, especially if you need a disc drive. A console’s simplicity does not remove the need to check online requirements, game availability, and model compatibility.
Do you need a subscription to play online?
For PlayStation, PlayStation Support says, “In order to play most PS4 and PS5 games in online multiplayer, you need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription.” This applies to most PS4 and PS5 games, not every game or free-to-play title. Check the multiplayer requirements of the specific games you play and the current plan details in your region (PlayStation Plus support).

Do not treat any subscription as blanket access to every game on every device. For Xbox Game Pass, check the current plan’s supported devices, included games, and limits on simultaneous use before counting it toward your decision (Microsoft Services Agreement). Compare recurring membership costs alongside game and hardware costs.

How to compare the full cost
Compare the setup you would actually use rather than just the upfront platform price. Add hardware you need, the price of your intended games, storage or upgrades, and any membership required for the features you want. If you already own a suitable PC or console, include the cost of replacing or upgrading it only if your shortlist requires that.

- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
- List the games and editions you want, and note their prices on each eligible platform.
- Include the hardware purchase or upgrade needed to run them.
- Add recurring membership costs only where your games or desired features require them.
- Account for discs if you use them, and verify that the console model you are considering supports them.
- Check whether the games you already own can be used on the platform you plan to buy; do not assume purchases or saves transfer.
Prices, subscription tiers, bundles, and game availability change, and costs vary by region. Confirm current local listings before purchase rather than relying on an old price comparison.
Use this decision checklist
- Build a shortlist. Identify the games you expect to play first.
- Verify platform and edition. Confirm each game is available where you want it, with the content you expect.
- Check your group. Find out where your friends play, then verify cross-play for each relevant game.
- Check continuity. If you need progress to follow you between devices, confirm cross-save or cross-progression for each title.
- Match the hardware. Compare your existing PC or console with the requirements, disc needs, and model details of the games you chose.
- Calculate ongoing costs. Include memberships only when required for your intended multiplayer or other desired features.
- Choose for your actual setup. If a must-play game or essential feature is missing, rule out that option; otherwise weigh convenience, controls, library, and total cost according to your preferences.
Can a Steam purchase be refunded?
Steam’s refund policy says buyers can request a refund for a game within two weeks of purchase if playtime is under two hours, subject to conditions and exceptions. Steam says requests outside those rules may still be reviewed but are not guaranteed. The policy page is marked last updated April 23, 2024, so check its current terms before relying on the window (Steam Refunds).
