Choose the device that matches the thing you want to control. A smart bulb replaces an individual bulb and is the right choice for color, tunable white, bulb-level dimming, scenes, and schedules. A smart switch replaces a wall switch and controls every compatible light on its wired circuit while preserving familiar physical control. A smart plug adds remote on/off control and scheduling to a compatible plug-in lamp or other load.
The important exceptions are compatibility and installation: smart bulbs need continuous power, switches have model-specific wiring requirements, plugs have current and wattage limits, and dimmers must be matched to the bulbs they control. Use the decision guide below before buying a specific model.

Quick decision: which category fits your use case?
| If you want to… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Change color or white temperature, create lighting scenes, or dim one bulb independently | Smart bulb | The intelligence and dimming are built into the bulb. |
| Control a ceiling fixture or several lights on one circuit from the wall | Smart switch | It controls the wired circuit and keeps a normal wall-control experience. |
| Schedule or remotely switch a table or floor lamp without rewiring | Smart plug | It sits between the outlet and the lamp and normally needs no in-wall installation. |
| Control a device that is not designed to restart when power returns | Usually not a smart plug | Some electronics remain in standby or require a manual power button after power is restored. |
These are categories, not interchangeable accessories. A bulb controls the light source, a switch controls a hardwired circuit, and a plug controls the power delivered to a plug-in device. That distinction determines the features you get, the installation work, and what happens when somebody uses the ordinary wall switch.

What a smart bulb does
A smart bulb screws into a compatible lamp or fixture and connects to an app or home platform. Depending on the model, it can provide remote on/off control, dimming, schedules, scenes, and changes between warm and cool white or between colors. The feature list is product-specific; a basic white bulb may not offer color or tunable-white control.

Where a smart bulb is strongest
- Individual control: You can address one bulb without changing the wiring of the room.
- Lighting effects: Color, tunable white, and scenes are normally available only when the bulb itself supports them.
- Simple physical installation: Replacing a bulb generally avoids opening an electrical box.
- Flexible grouping: Multiple bulbs can often be grouped in software, even when they are in different fixtures.
The wall-switch problem
A smart bulb must remain powered to receive commands. If someone turns off the ordinary wall switch, the bulb is electrically offline and cannot respond to an app, schedule, or voice command until power is restored. ENERGY STAR recommends considering how household members will retain convenient wall-switch or remote access before choosing this approach.
Practical solutions include leaving the switch on and using app control, fitting a compatible accessory or scene controller, or choosing a smart switch for that circuit instead. Do not install a conventional dimmer in front of a smart bulb unless the bulb maker explicitly supports that arrangement; the bulb already contains its own dimming electronics.
What a smart switch does
A smart switch replaces a wall switch and controls the lights connected to that switch’s circuit. It is usually the better fit for a ceiling light, bathroom light, porch fixture, or a group of fixtures that people expect to operate from the wall. Turning the switch on and off still feels familiar, while app, schedule, voice, or remote control can be added.

Installation and wiring
Unlike a bulb or plug, a switch requires work inside an electrical box. Wiring is model-specific. For example, TP-Link states that its HS200 switch requires live, load, and neutral wires. That requirement applies to that model, not automatically to every smart switch. Other models may have different requirements, may be designed for installations without a neutral, or may require a particular multi-way wiring arrangement.
Before buying, identify the wires in the box, the number of switches controlling the same light, the box depth, and whether the circuit has a ground connection. Turn off the circuit breaker and verify that the wires are de-energized. If the wiring does not match the manufacturer’s diagram, stop and consult a qualified electrician rather than improvising.
What a switch cannot do by itself
A normal smart switch generally controls power to the fixture; it does not turn an ordinary bulb into a color-changing or tunable-white light. For those effects, use a compatible smart bulb and keep it continuously powered, or use a lighting system specifically designed to combine fixture control and smart-light features. A smart switch is therefore about reliable circuit control, not automatically about advanced bulb features.

What a smart plug does
A smart plug goes into an existing outlet, and the lamp or other compatible device plugs into it. Its usual functions are remote on/off control, schedules, timers, and sometimes energy monitoring. It is the least invasive option for a plug-in lamp because it does not require changing the wall switch or opening wiring.

Check the electrical rating
Every plug has a stated maximum current and wattage. TP-Link advises keeping the connected device within the plug’s rated limits and warns against plugging a power strip or extension cord into its smart plug. Use the rating for the exact model, not a generic assumption about all smart plugs.
Check how the appliance behaves after power loss
A smart plug can only remove and restore power. It cannot press a device’s physical power button. Some televisions, for example, enter standby when power is interrupted and may require a manual press after the plug restores power. The same issue can occur with computers, chargers, appliances, and devices that require a deliberate startup sequence. Test the device’s behavior before relying on a schedule or remote restart.
Side-by-side comparison
| Decision factor | Smart bulb | Smart switch | Smart plug |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it controls | One compatible bulb or fixture socket | Lights on a wired wall-switch circuit | One compatible plug-in load |
| Color and tunable white | Available on models that include those features | Not provided by an ordinary switch; depends on the bulb or fixture | Does not alter the light’s color |
| Dimming | Built into supported bulbs and controlled in their app or platform | Requires a compatible dimmer model and compatible dimmable bulbs | Normally on/off only |
| Physical wall control | Ordinary switch must remain on; turning it off cuts power | Retains a familiar wall control | Uses the lamp’s existing switch, plus the plug’s power control |
| Installation | Replace a bulb | In-wall electrical installation; wiring varies by model | Plug in the accessory and the load |
| Main compatibility check | Socket, fixture, platform, and continuous power | Wiring, circuit type, load, bulbs, and platform | Current/wattage rating, plug type, load behavior, and platform |
| Best for | Color, scenes, and independent bulb control | Ceiling fixtures and room-wide wall operation | Simple remote control of a lamp without rewiring |
A step-by-step buying method
- Describe the load. Write down whether you are controlling an individual bulb, a hardwired fixture, or a plug-in lamp or appliance. If the device is permanently wired, a plug is not an option; if it is a table lamp, a switch may require unnecessary rewiring.
- Choose the required feature. Select a bulb for color, tunable white, bulb-level dimming, or scenes. Select a switch for dependable wall control of a circuit. Select a plug when on/off scheduling is enough.
- List who must control it. If guests, children, or other household members rely on a physical wall switch, favor a smart switch or provide a clearly understood control for a bulb. A smart-home plan that works only when everyone remembers not to touch a switch is fragile.
- Inspect installation constraints. For a bulb, verify the socket and fixture limits. For a switch, identify neutral, live, load, ground, and multi-way wiring as applicable to the model. For a plug, check outlet type, clearance, and the device’s electrical rating.
- Resolve dimming before purchase. Confirm that the bulb is dimmable and that the switch or dimmer supports its dimming method. Never assume that two products labeled “dimmable” are compatible.
- Confirm the platform and connection. Check the exact product’s app, voice-assistant support, hub requirement, Wi-Fi or other connection method, and whether control works when you are away. ENERGY STAR notes that Bluetooth has limited range for away-from-home control; a Bluetooth-only product may not meet a remote-access requirement.
- Price the complete installation. Count every bulb, switch, plug, hub if required, compatible dimmable bulb, wall plate, and possible electrician visit. No universal cost or savings ranking exists across the three categories, and adding more features can increase initial cost.
- Plan for failure and manual use. Decide what happens during an internet outage, a power cycle, or a failed app. A wall switch offers a straightforward local fallback; a smart bulb or plug may need its local switch left in a particular position.
Dimming: the compatibility issue people miss
Dimming is not a universal signal. Conventional dimmable LED bulbs must match the dimmer’s supported method and electrical characteristics. TP-Link describes its supported smart Wi-Fi dimmers as using leading-edge/TRIAC phase-cut dimming for compatible bulb types and warns that a mismatch can cause flicker, buzzing, poor dimming, or drop-out.
Before pairing a dimmer and bulb
- Read the dimmer’s supported bulb and load list.
- Verify that each bulb is labeled dimmable; ordinary non-dimmable bulbs can behave unpredictably or be damaged.
- Check minimum and maximum load requirements, especially when only one low-wattage LED is connected.
- Check whether the dimmer supports the wiring arrangement and number of control locations in your box.
- Use the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance rather than relying on a brand name alone.
Smart bulbs are a separate case. TP-Link says Kasa and Tapo smart bulbs have built-in dimming and should be controlled through their app rather than a smart dimmer. This is a model-family instruction, not a license to combine any smart bulb with any external dimmer. Follow the instructions for the exact bulb and switch.

Questions to answer on the product page
- Does it connect directly to Wi-Fi, require a separate hub, or use Bluetooth?
- Which app and voice platforms are supported?
- Can schedules and scenes run locally if the internet is unavailable?
- Is away-from-home control supported, and does it require an account or hub?
- Can the device be shared with other household members?
ENERGY STAR specifically advises considering voice control and whether you need control while away. Bluetooth’s limited range can make a product suitable for same-room control but unsuitable for checking a light from another location. Treat “works with” badges as a starting point and verify the exact model, region, and required hardware.
Installation checklists
Smart bulb checklist
- Match the base and physical size to the socket and confirm the fixture’s maximum rating.
- Confirm the bulb’s voltage and whether the fixture is enclosed or exposed as required by the bulb maker.
- Install the bulb with power off, then restore power and complete app pairing.
- Leave the ordinary wall switch on if app, schedule, or voice control must remain available.
- Label or explain the control method so another person does not unknowingly cut power.
Smart switch checklist
- Identify the exact switch model and download its wiring diagram.
- Check for the required live, load, neutral, ground, and traveler wires; do not infer requirements from another model.
- Confirm the switch is rated for the fixture type and total load.
- Turn off the breaker, verify the circuit is dead, and install only if the wiring matches the instructions.
- Restore power, complete setup, and test both app control and the physical switch.
- If the box, wiring, or multi-way arrangement is unclear, use a qualified electrician.
Smart plug checklist
- Confirm the outlet and plug geometry, clearance, and the plug’s current and wattage rating.
- Plug the smart plug directly into the wall outlet; do not put a power strip or extension cord on it when the manufacturer prohibits that arrangement.
- Connect only a device whose power-on behavior you understand.
- Set the lamp or appliance’s own switch to the intended position before creating schedules.
- Test an off/on cycle locally before depending on remote automation.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
“The bulb stopped responding.”
First check the ordinary wall switch, fixture switch, or breaker. If power was cut, restore it and allow the bulb to reconnect. If the household repeatedly turns the switch off, move to a wall-control solution or establish a clear alternative control.
“The new dimmer flickers or buzzes.”
Turn the circuit off and check the bulb list, dimming method, minimum load, and wiring against the exact dimmer instructions. Replace the incompatible bulb or dimmer rather than accepting unstable operation.

Many appliances do not automatically resume operation after power returns. Test the appliance with a normal unplug/replug cycle and check whether its physical switch must be pressed. If it cannot restart predictably, use the plug only for a load that is safe and practical to operate that way.
“The switch does not fit the box or will not power up.”
Stop troubleshooting by trial and error. Recheck the model’s wiring requirements, neutral availability, circuit type, breaker status, and box depth. A wiring mismatch is an installation problem, not an app problem.
“I can control it at home but not away.”
Check whether the product uses Bluetooth-only control, requires a hub, or needs remote access enabled in its app. Verify the account, network connection, and supported platform for the exact model.

Choosing for common rooms and situations
Bedroom or living-room table lamp
Use a smart plug when you need scheduled on/off control and the lamp’s own switch can remain on. Use a smart bulb when you want dimming, color, tunable white, or scenes. If people insist on using the wall switch that powers the outlet, neither option will remain reliably available unless that switch stays on.

A smart switch is usually the natural fit because it preserves the expected wall operation and controls the circuit. Choose a smart bulb instead only when bulb-level effects matter enough to justify keeping the circuit continuously powered.
Several ceiling lights that should act together
A switch can control all compatible lights on its circuit as one group. Multiple smart bulbs can also be grouped in software, but each bulb must remain powered and each must be compatible with the chosen platform.
Accent lighting or a single decorative fixture
A smart bulb offers the most expressive control when color or white-temperature changes are central. A plug is adequate for a plug-in decorative lamp that needs only a schedule.
Renter or anyone avoiding electrical work
A bulb or plug normally avoids replacing an in-wall device. Check lease rules and outlet ratings, and remember that a bulb still needs continuous power for smart features.
Standby power and efficiency expectations
ENERGY STAR’s SHEMS criteria specify a maximum standby power of 0.5 watts for smart light switches and 1.0 watt for plug-load monitor/control devices within that program’s system requirements. These are program criteria, not universal measurements for every product and not a comparison of typical devices. Actual standby use depends on the model and operating state.

Do not assume that a smart device automatically lowers energy use. Scheduling, occupancy routines, and avoiding lights left on can reduce waste, but the result depends on how the household uses the system. A feature-rich product may also cost more initially, so evaluate the automation you will actually use.
When combining categories makes sense
Homes often use more than one category. A smart switch can provide dependable wall control for a room’s main ceiling fixture, while smart plugs handle table lamps and smart bulbs add color or tunable white to selected accent fixtures. The combination works only when each device has a clearly defined role and the control methods do not fight each other.
Avoid placing an external smart dimmer in front of smart bulbs unless both manufacturers explicitly support the combination. Likewise, do not assume that a plug can safely operate every appliance merely because the appliance fits the outlet. Treat each chain—platform, wiring, dimmer, bulb, and load—as a compatibility system.
Final buying checklist
- Have you identified whether the target is a bulb, wired circuit, or plug-in load?
- Are color, tunable white, scenes, or dimming essential, or is on/off enough?
- Will people need a physical wall control?
- Does the exact switch model match the available wiring?
- Does the exact bulb match the fixture and dimmer, if any?
- Is the plug’s current and wattage rating high enough for the connected device?
- Will the connected device behave correctly when power is removed and restored?
- Does the connection method support your app, voice platform, and away-from-home needs?
- Have you priced the complete setup rather than one device?
- Do you have a safe manual fallback if the network or app is unavailable?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a smart bulb with a smart dimmer switch?
Do not assume so. Smart bulbs normally contain their own dimming electronics; TP-Link says its Kasa and Tapo smart bulbs should be controlled through their app rather than a smart dimmer. Follow the compatibility instructions for the exact products.
Do all smart switches need a neutral wire?
No universal rule applies. Wiring is model-specific. TP-Link’s HS200, for example, requires live, load, and neutral wires, but another model may have different requirements. Check the exact wiring diagram.
Can a smart plug turn on a television or computer remotely?
Only if the device resumes operation automatically when power returns. Many televisions enter standby and require a manual power-button press, so test the behavior before relying on the plug.
Which option is easiest for a renter?
A smart bulb or smart plug usually avoids replacing an in-wall switch, provided the fixture or outlet is compatible and the bulb’s wall switch can remain on. Check lease rules and electrical ratings.
