How to Choose Between Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind and Six Ages: Lights Going Out

Choose Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind if you want to begin the Riders clan’s story and experience the opening chapter of a planned multi-generational saga. Choose Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out if the idea of leading a clan through the Great Darkness—after Chaos has broken the world and killed most of the gods—is more appealing. You can start Lights Going Out with a new story, so playing the first game is not a prerequisite.

The practical choice also depends on where you play. Ride Like the Wind is listed for Steam and iOS, while Chaosium lists Lights Going Out for Steam, GOG and iOS. Store prices, bundle discounts and device compatibility can change, so verify the live storefront page for your region before purchasing.

The short answer

If you want… Start with… Why
The beginning of the Riders clan’s saga Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind It is the first released chapter in the planned Six Ages sequence and introduces its clan-centered story in Glorantha.
A post-apocalyptic mythic crisis Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out Its premise is survival during the Great Darkness, when Chaos has shattered the world and most gods are dead.
To continue an existing clan story Lights Going Out, if you already have a compatible prior story The sequel is designed to continue a clan’s story, but its creator also says you may start a new one.
The safest first purchase when you are unsure Ride Like the Wind It establishes the setting and the opening era before the sequel’s later catastrophe.

This is primarily a choice of narrative era and entry point. The available official descriptions do not establish a complete, current feature-by-feature comparison showing that the sequel replaces the first game’s core systems. Both are presented as storybook strategy games in Glorantha, so choose by premise first and by platform second.

What Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind offers

A clan story in Glorantha

Steam describes Ride Like the Wind as a storybook strategy game set in Glorantha, the mythic world also used by King of Dragon Pass. You guide a clan through role-playing choices and resource management rather than controlling a conventional action-game avatar. The central concerns are survival, relationships with neighboring clans and the consequences of decisions that may not become visible until much later.

The Steam description says hundreds of small encounters build toward an epic, multi-generational tale of survival and inter-clan alliances. It also lists more than 400 interactive story scenes. That figure is a developer-provided content count in the store copy, not an independently measured statistic, and it does not promise that every player will see all of those scenes in one playthrough.

Activities described for the iPhone and iPad version

Apple’s US App Store description presents the game as a combination of interactive stories and turn-based strategy. It specifically mentions improving pastures, exploration, trade, raiding and diplomacy. You can also visit the Otherworld, and choices can have consequences that surface much later in the clan’s history.

Those activities explain the game’s rhythm: a decision may concern an immediate practical problem, but its value is measured across seasons, relationships and generations. The App Store wording applies to the listed iPhone and iPad app; it should not be treated as proof that every Apple device or every territory currently supports the same version.

Difficulty and reload options

The Steam listing identifies multiple difficulty levels and an Iron Willed option that limits reloading. That matters if you want to experiment freely or if you prefer decisions to remain permanent. A more forgiving setting can help you learn the setting and its systems; Iron Willed is better suited to a deliberate, consequence-focused run. The source does not define every difficulty setting or specify exactly how many reloads Iron Willed permits, so consult the current in-game description for those details.

Its place in the larger series

“Our plan is that Ride Like the Wind is the first in a series of six related games. You’ll be able to play them in any order, but the idea is that you can continue the story of a clan through the ages.”

The later release of Lights Going Out confirms the relevant follow-up. The six-game plan is historical context rather than a promise that all six entries are currently available. For a buyer choosing between the two released games, the useful point is that Ride Like the Wind represents the opening era of the intended saga.

What Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out changes

The Great Darkness premise

Chaosium’s release announcement frames Lights Going Out around the Great Darkness. In its account, your ancestors had united rival clans before Chaos broke the world and killed most of the gods. The sequel therefore begins from a civilization-wide crisis rather than the relatively open-ended setup of establishing a clan in a functioning mythic world.

This premise is the clearest reason to choose the sequel first. If stories about rebuilding after a supernatural collapse, preserving a people’s traditions and deciding what survives the end of an age appeal to you more than witnessing the beginning of the saga, the later game is the direct fit.

Continuation is optional

Lights Going Out is described as a continuation of a clan’s story, but A Sharp’s series guidance says a player can start a new story. You do not need to finish Ride Like the Wind before trying it, and you are not locked out of the sequel because you lack an earlier save. Starting fresh means you experience the Great Darkness on its own terms; continuing a clan story is the option for players who want a longer historical thread.

What the available descriptions do not establish

The official material available for this comparison does not provide a complete side-by-side matrix of mechanics, scene counts, difficulty options, interface changes or save-transfer behavior. Do not assume that every activity named for Ride Like the Wind has been removed, expanded or redesigned in the sequel. The evidence supports the sequel’s setting, continuity and storefront availability; it does not support detailed claims about sequel-only systems.

Story order: which game should you play first?

Play in release and saga order

Start with Ride Like the Wind if you want to meet the Riders clan at the beginning of this particular story. You will encounter the setting before the Great Darkness and can then approach Lights Going Out as a later historical phase. This is the most natural route for readers who value context, gradual escalation and the idea of watching one clan’s identity develop across generations.

Start with the sequel premise

Start with Lights Going Out if the Great Darkness is the deciding feature. Because a new story can be started, you can treat it as an entry point rather than an expansion that assumes a completed campaign. You may miss the earlier clan’s introduction, but you will reach the crisis that defines the sequel immediately.

Buy both without committing to an order

The original series plan explicitly allowed the games to be played in any order. In practical terms, that means your purchase decision does not have to follow a strict unlock sequence. If you buy both, choose the first one by the type of story you want tonight: frontier clan-building and the Riders’ introduction, or survival after the world has already been damaged by Chaos.

iOS and iPadOS

Both games are associated with iOS in the available official material, and Apple’s listing provides the detailed activity description for Ride Like the Wind. App Store compatibility can vary by device model, operating-system version and territory. Open the live listing on the device or account you intend to use and verify the compatibility field before purchase.

GOG

Chaosium lists Lights Going Out on GOG. The cited material does not list GOG for Ride Like the Wind, so do not assume the same storefront choice or edition exists for both games. Confirm the current product page and any regional restrictions.

Price and bundle guidance

A captured Steam search result displayed Ride Like the Wind at $19.99 and a two-game bundle at $40.48 with a displayed 10% discount. These are volatile store figures from that snapshot, not guaranteed present-day prices, and they may differ by currency, tax, region, sale period or account. The cited material does not establish a current standalone price for Lights Going Out.

Use the figures only as a prompt to check the live store page. Compare the final checkout total, the games included in the bundle, platform compatibility and refund rules rather than relying on an indexed price. A bundle can make sense if you already expect to play both; buying one game first is safer if you are still deciding whether the storybook-strategy format suits you.

A practical decision process

  1. Choose the story era. Pick the Riders clan and the start of the saga for Ride Like the Wind; pick the Great Darkness and a broken world for Lights Going Out.
  2. Decide whether continuity matters. If you want to establish context before following a clan through later ages, begin with the first game. If you are happy to start a new story in the sequel era, continuity is optional.
  3. Check your device. Verify the live Steam, GOG or App Store page for your operating system, hardware model, region and account.
  4. Check the edition and price. Look for current taxes, discounts, bundle contents and any platform-specific purchase differences. Do not treat the $19.99 or $40.48 snapshot as a standing offer.
  5. Choose your commitment level. If you want to learn through experimentation, the first game’s listed difficulty choices give you options. If you are attracted to permanent consequences, its Iron Willed setting limits reloading.
  6. Buy the smallest commitment that answers your question. Choose one game when premise is your only uncertainty; choose the bundle only after confirming that both titles are included and supported on the platform you use.

Common buying mistakes

Assuming the sequel requires a completed first game

The sequel relationship can make Lights Going Out look inaccessible to newcomers. The creator’s series guidance says a new story can be started, so you can enter there. The trade-off is missing the Riders clan’s opening context, not losing access to the sequel’s basic premise.

Assuming the mechanics are completely different

The Great Darkness is a major thematic shift, but the available descriptions do not prove a wholesale mechanical redesign. Both games are described as storybook strategy games in Glorantha. Base your decision on the setting and era rather than expecting an unverified genre change.

Treating a store snapshot as a permanent price

Digital prices and discounts change. The displayed Steam figures are useful historical reference points only. Check the current regional listing at the moment you buy.

Assuming mobile availability means universal Apple support

An iOS listing does not guarantee support on every iPhone or iPad, nor does it establish availability in every territory. Confirm the compatibility details for your specific device and account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting to see all story content in one run

The first game’s “over 400 interactive story scenes” wording describes the available game content, not a promise that one clan will encounter every scene. Choices, difficulty and long-term consequences can shape what appears during a particular playthrough.

Who should choose each game?

Choose Ride Like the Wind when…

  • You want the Riders clan’s introduction and the opening point of the saga.
  • You prefer to encounter a setting before its apocalyptic crisis.
  • You want the broadest documented information about activities such as trade, diplomacy, raiding, exploration and Otherworld visits.
  • You value explicit difficulty choices and an Iron Willed mode that limits reloading.
  • You want to begin with the game that Steam lists as released on October 17, 2019.

Choose Lights Going Out when…

  • The Great Darkness is more compelling than the Riders’ starting era.
  • You want a story about surviving after Chaos has broken the world and killed most of the gods.
  • You want the option to continue a clan’s story but do not require an earlier save.
  • You prefer to buy from a choice of Steam, GOG or iOS storefronts, subject to current regional support.

Final buying recommendation

For most players asking which game to play first, Ride Like the Wind is the safer narrative starting point: it introduces the Riders clan, establishes the Gloranthan setting and opens the intended multi-generational arc. Choose Lights Going Out instead when the Great Darkness itself is the reason you are interested. It is a valid starting point because a new story is available, and the sequel’s crisis is the feature that distinguishes the decision.

Whichever premise wins, verify the current storefront, device compatibility and final regional price immediately before checkout. The story choice is durable; the store details are not.
