How to Choose Between PvE and PvP Extraction Games

Short answer: Choose a PvE extraction game when you want to explore, gather loot, complete objectives and coordinate with teammates without another player deciding to attack you. Choose PvP or PvPvE when unpredictable human opponents, negotiation, ambushes, rivalry and the possibility of losing a promising run to another squad are part of the appeal. Before committing, verify the game’s actual matchmaking, party rules, extraction losses and whether any advertised PvE option is permanent.

The labels are useful shorthand, not guarantees. A solo queue can still place you in a PvPvE match, and a temporary “PvE” toggle may have different rewards and restrictions from a full co-op progression mode.

What PvE, PvP and PvPvE mean in an extraction game

PvE: players versus the game

In a player-versus-environment (PvE) extraction game, the threats are controlled by the software: enemies, hazards, patrols and mission conditions. You and your teammates cooperate against those systems, collect items and try to leave successfully. The attraction is controlled teamwork. You can plan roles, learn enemy behavior and improve without a human opponent choosing to shoot you, negotiate with you or take your loot.

PvE does not mean effortless or risk-free. A game can make its artificial enemies dangerous, limit ammunition, impose time pressure or punish a failed extraction. The important distinction is who creates the immediate opposition: the game rules rather than another player.

PvP: players versus players

In player-versus-player (PvP), other people are the primary opponents. Their decisions are harder to predict than scripted behavior. They may rush a noisy fight, wait near an extraction point, avoid you, challenge you openly or change plans after seeing what you carry. In an extraction format, that uncertainty raises the value of information and positioning because a successful-looking run can become a contest at any moment.

PvPvE: both threats in the same run

PvPvE combines human opponents with game-controlled enemies and environmental hazards. You may be fighting an AI-controlled threat when another squad arrives, or you may use the noise and distraction of an AI encounter to approach a rival team. The balance differs by game and mode: not every player is hostile, and not every run produces the same amount of player combat.

The official description of ARC Raiders presents machines and Raiders who prey on others as simultaneous dangers, and its classic experience is described by Embark as PvPvE. That makes it a useful example of the mixed model, not a universal definition of how every extraction game works.

Start with the kind of danger you actually want

Question PvE usually fits when… PvP/PvPvE usually fits when…
Who should challenge you? You prefer learnable enemy rules and environmental problems. You want human decisions, deception, adaptation and competition.
What makes a run exciting? Coordinating abilities, solving objectives and surviving escalating game threats. Reading other players, choosing when to fight and protecting a valuable haul from rivals.
How should failure feel? You want to limit setbacks caused by another person’s choice. You accept that an opponent may end a run even when your own plan was working.
What social experience appeals? Reliable cooperation against a shared enemy. Negotiation, rivalry, betrayal risk or direct player combat.
What must you verify? Co-op party size, objective progression and whether rewards differ from competitive play. Player-damage rules, matchmaking exposure, party composition and what is lost on death.

This is a decision aid, not a ranking. Neither label establishes that a game is easier, more popular or better made. It tells you where the opposing decisions come from.

A step-by-step method for choosing

1. Decide whether human uncertainty is a feature or a nuisance

Imagine hearing footsteps while carrying the items needed to complete your objective. If your first reaction is curiosity—“Are they friendly, and can I outplay or outmaneuver them?”—a PvPvE or PvP game may provide the tension you want. If your reaction is frustration because an outside player can erase progress you earned against the environment, start with PvE.

Do not reduce this choice to skill. Experienced players can prefer PvE because they value a calm cooperative loop, while competitive players can prefer PvPvE because social uncertainty is the point. Choose the source of pressure, not the reputation of the mode.

2. Set your tolerance for player-caused losses

Extraction games make the exit matter. Before choosing a mode, find out what a failed or exposed run costs: carried loot, mission progress, equipment, rating or only the time spent in the match. No universal loss rule applies, so read the specific game’s death and extraction explanation.

If losing equipment to an ambush would make you stop playing for the evening, a PvE mode—or a PvPvE game with forgiving loss rules—may be the better fit. If a narrow escape or a last-second defeat would be a memorable story, the higher variance of PvPvE is likely valuable rather than unfair.

3. Choose your preferred social behavior

PvE cooperation is usually explicit: share a target, cover a teammate and divide tasks. PvPvE adds uncertainty about the other human group. You may avoid them, communicate, negotiate, fight or discover that an apparent truce was temporary. Select PvPvE only if you are comfortable with social outcomes that the rules may permit but cannot script.

4. Check whether you want competition or objective depth

Some players measure a good run by winning a fight; others measure it by completing a sequence of objectives and returning with a full inventory. Ask which result would feel satisfying if no other player ever saw it. If the answer is a completed cooperative mission, PvE is the clearer starting point. If the answer involves reading an opponent and making a better decision under pressure, include PvP or PvPvE in your shortlist.

5. Verify the mode before you install or queue

Look for the game’s current mode description, matchmaking notes and party-size rules. Confirm whether “solo” means a private PvE session or simply entering a PvPvE match alone. Check whether the mode is a permanent playlist, a rotating event or a limited test. Also note whether rewards, progression, ratings and special conditions differ between queues.

Solo is a party size, not a PvE promise

One of the most common mistakes is treating solo play as a safety setting. A solo queue can mean that you enter the same world as duos and trios without teammates of your own. It says how many people are in your party, not whether other players can damage you.

PlayStation’s description of ARC Raiders says the game is online-only and can be played solo or in a team of two or three. Its classic experience remains PvPvE, so a solo player can still face the mixed threat model. If you want no hostile player encounters, look for an explicit PvE rule—such as player-to-player damage being disabled—not merely a solo option.

Why safety can change rewards and tension

Removing hostile players changes more than the soundscape. It removes ambushes, negotiation and the possibility that another team will contest your route. A developer may compensate by adjusting loot, objectives, matchmaking or special conditions.

Embark’s limited ARC Raiders PvE test illustrates this trade-off. The studio says overall loot value is lower in PvE to account for relative safety, while baseline loot values are slightly higher in PvPvE. It also says the PvE test excludes certain high-tension conditions. Those are rules for that test, not a genre-wide formula; another game may change difficulty, enemy density, reward multipliers or nothing at all.

When comparing modes, treat “safer” and “more rewarding” as separate questions. A protected run may be better for learning objectives but less efficient for building wealth. A competitive run may offer higher baseline loot while exposing you to a greater chance of losing the entire haul. Read the mode’s reward explanation instead of assuming that the riskier queue always pays more.

Current example: the ARC Raiders PvE toggle test

Embark announced on September 24, 2026 that ARC Raiders would run a limited PvE matchmaking-toggle test from October 13 through October 20, 2026. During the test, players can choose the classic PvPvE experience or a PvE-focused option built around cooperation against ARC. The dates matter: a toggle visible during the test is not evidence of a permanent playlist.

Test detail What Embark says What it means for your decision
Player damage Player-to-player damage is disabled in PvE. The test removes direct attacks by other players, unlike the classic mixed mode.
Party formats Solos, duos and trios share PvE sessions. Solo describes party size; it does not create a separate solo-only population.
Progression rating PvPvE matchmaking rating is unaffected by PvE sessions. Playing the test does not alter that PvPvE rating according to the announcement.
Rewards Overall loot value is lower in PvE; baseline loot values are slightly higher in PvPvE. Relative safety is balanced with a different reward profile.
Special conditions Certain high-tension conditions are excluded from PvE. The test is an alternative to PvP encounters, not a harder PvE progression system.
Availability The toggle is scheduled to be removed after October 20, 2026, with matchmaking returning to normal. Do not buy or choose the game assuming the test will become permanent.

Embark explicitly says the trial is not a promise of a future permanent PvE mode. Aleks, the game’s executive producer, wrote: “This test is not a promise that there will be a PvE mode in the future.” If you are choosing a game specifically for lasting PvE support, treat the test as a temporary experiment and recheck the official game page after the test window.

What the player-preference figures do—and do not—show

In the same announcement, Embark reports that its player population breaks down as 37% friendly co-op players, 27% mixed players and 34% pure PvP players. It also says 51% of the surveyed player base expressed interest in a dedicated PvE option. These are developer-reported figures about ARC Raiders, not a study of the entire extraction genre. The announcement does not specify the survey sample size or method, so the numbers should not be treated as an independent poll or proof that one mode is universally preferred.

A concrete PvE reference point

Ubisoft describes Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction as a tactical, cooperative PvE first-person shooter. It is a useful contrast for a reader who wants squad coordination against an evolving alien threat rather than hostile player encounters. The example demonstrates the decision principle: evaluate the stated opponent and mission structure, not whether a game is marketed with the word “extraction.”

When considering any PvE title, inspect how much of the loop is cooperative objective work. A mode can be technically PvE while offering shallow teamwork, or it can require meaningful role coordination. Look for mission descriptions, party limits, revive rules and progression details in the current product information.

How to compare games without relying on the labels

Compare human-threat exposure

Record whether player damage is always enabled, limited to a playlist, disabled during events or governed by an encounter rule. “PvPvE” tells you that both categories exist, not how often you will meet another squad or whether every encounter must end in combat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare consequences of an exposed run

Write down what leaves your inventory when you fail, what remains secured and whether a protected queue changes the reward. A mode that sounds safer may still be costly if environmental enemies can end the run, while a competitive mode may be manageable if losses are limited.

Compare solo and team options separately

List supported party sizes and matchmaking pools. Confirm whether solos, duos and trios share sessions, whether a fill option exists and whether team size affects objectives. Never infer these details from the word “solo.”

Compare the social contract

Ask whether the rules allow non-hostile interactions, proximity communication, trading or only combat. If the game provides no formal negotiation system, players may still create informal conventions, but those conventions are not guarantees. Choose PvPvE only if you can accept that another player may ignore an apparent truce.

Compare mode permanence

A permanent playlist, a seasonal event and a time-limited test are different products for a player choosing a long-term home. Check the announcement date, end date and the developer’s statement about future support. The ARC Raiders test is specifically scheduled to end, and its continuation is undecided.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

Mistake: assuming “extraction” means PvP

Extraction describes the risk-and-return structure of entering, gathering and leaving; it does not by itself identify the opponent. Read whether the game is PvE, PvP or PvPvE and verify the current playlist.

Mistake: assuming PvE means no meaningful loss

Game-controlled enemies and hazards can still end a run. Check the death, inventory and objective rules before promising yourself a low-stress experience.

Mistake: treating a test as a product guarantee

A temporary toggle can be valuable for trying a different style without establishing long-term support. In the ARC Raiders announcement, the developer says the toggle will be removed after the test and does not promise a future PvE mode.

Mistake: using population statistics as a universal verdict

Developer figures describe the developer’s own audience and may omit sample or method details. Use them as context for that game, not as evidence that PvE or PvP is objectively superior.

Mistake: choosing by labels instead of your failure tolerance

Two games with the same label can produce very different feelings because their rewards, matchmaking and loss rules differ. Decide how much setback you can enjoy, then confirm the mechanics that create it.

Recommendations by player preference

Choose PvE first if you want a dependable cooperative routine

Start with PvE when your ideal session is learning enemy behavior, assigning tasks, completing objectives and extracting without a hostile player deciding the outcome. This is especially suitable when you are introducing friends to the genre or when repeated player ambushes would make progression feel arbitrary.

Choose PvPvE if emergent stories are the reward

Start with PvPvE when the best part of a run is uncertainty: deciding whether to avoid another squad, risk a fight, use an environmental distraction or leave with less loot to protect your progress. Accept that the same uncertainty can produce abrupt losses.

Choose a PvP-focused game if competition is the main objective

A PvP-oriented extraction game fits when outplaying human opponents matters more to you than cooperative environmental objectives. Confirm how much PvE remains in the loop, because an extraction game can still use AI threats even when player combat is the central contest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try a temporary PvE option as a low-risk experiment

If a game offers a clearly marked PvE test, use it to learn maps, objectives and controls, but evaluate it on its own reward and progression rules. Do not assume that test conditions will remain available or that skills and inventory carry over exactly as they do in the competitive queue.

A final pre-queue checklist

  • Identify whether the selected playlist is PvE, PvP or PvPvE.
  • Confirm whether other players can enter the session and damage you.
  • Check party-size and matchmaking rules; solo is not synonymous with PvE.
  • Read what is lost on death or failed extraction.
  • Compare rewards and progression between safe and competitive queues.
  • Verify whether the mode is permanent, seasonal or a dated test.
  • Decide whether you value predictable cooperation or human unpredictability more.

The right choice is the one whose source of tension matches your reason for playing. PvE removes hostile-player uncertainty so cooperation and environmental mastery can take center stage. PvP and PvPvE add human choices, making every valuable haul more contestable and every escape potentially more dramatic. Check the live mode rules before you queue, because labels and temporary toggles can change what a session actually contains.
