Choose the console that fits the games you want to play and the library or friends you already have. Then compare the exact local model prices, disc-drive options, subscriptions, and any storage you expect to need. There is no universally cheaper or better choice: the right answer depends on your games, region, and how you plan to play.
Which console has the games you want?
Start with a short list of must-play games—not broad claims about which platform has the better catalog. Check each title’s current platform availability, edition, and any subscription requirements. Catalogs change, and a game offered through a subscription may not remain available there.

Also check where the people you play with are. If your regular group is already on one platform, that can matter more to your day-to-day experience than a longer list of games you might never play.

If your library is on Xbox
Xbox says Series X supports thousands of games across four generations, including most Xbox One games. Compatibility is title-specific: consult Xbox’s backward-compatible games list for the games you own. For supported disc games, you need to keep the disc; features can differ by title. If your library is on PlayStation
PlayStation says digital PS4 games are available from your account library on PS5 after you sign in. Check the specific game and edition before buying, especially if you own a physical copy or want to move between versions. PlayStation also describes PS Plus cloud saves in its PS4 and PS5 ecosystem guide.
What will you pay for the console and its configuration?
Compare current local listings for the exact models you would buy. A console price is not a like-for-like comparison unless you account for storage capacity and whether a disc drive is included. Confirm the PS5 version and drive configuration as well as the Xbox model; listings and bundles can differ.

One dated change is relevant to Xbox pricing: in an announcement published June 25, 2026, Xbox said console prices would increase worldwide effective August 1, 2026, by US$100 for 512 GB models and US$150 for 1 TB models, and said the 2 TB model would be sunset. Those announced changes do not establish today’s retailer price in any particular market or the current price of a PS5. Check local listings before deciding. In the same announcement, Xbox attributed the changes to rising costs, saying, “console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x” and that it expected another doubling by fall 2027; this is Xbox’s explanation, not an independently verified industry measure. If you buy or borrow physical games, or want to use movie discs, make sure the exact console you are pricing has the drive you need. Xbox identifies Series X as having a UHD Blu-ray disc player and native 4K output; that is a Series X specification, not a general claim about every Xbox model. Check the PS5 model listing for whether a disc drive is included before comparing totals.

Choose a disc-free configuration only if it suits your buying habits. Physical and digital editions of a game may have different prices or availability, so compare the edition you actually intend to purchase.
What will you pay beyond the console?
Subscriptions can change the ongoing budget, but compare the benefits and games you expect to use rather than the highest tier by default.

PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Plus has multiple tiers: Extra adds a game catalog, while Premium adds classics, game trials, and streaming options. Catalog games can leave the service, and streaming has requirements and restrictions. The PlayStation catalog page displayed 642 games when accessed October 7, 2026; that count is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of the current selection. The US PlayStation page displayed 12-month prices of $54.99 for Essential and $134.99 for Extra when accessed October 7, 2026. These are time-sensitive US prices, not universal or guaranteed future prices. Check the current PlayStation Plus plans and catalog for your region.

For either platform, compare the subscription’s recurring cost with the games you will actually play, and consider whether you would buy those games separately. A catalog is useful only if it contains titles you want while you have access to it.

Estimate storage needs from the games you expect to keep installed, then decide whether the console’s included capacity is enough. Xbox says its dedicated Storage Expansion Card adds space while replicating the custom SSD experience. It is an optional cost; confirm that the card is compatible with the model and check its current local price before adding it to your budget. Xbox’s Series X page describes the expansion option.
