Choose premium pricing if players can understand the full game’s value before buying and a one-time purchase fits the experience. Choose free-to-play if the game can attract and retain players and the team can operate its optional-purchase systems. If buyers need hands-on proof before purchasing, consider a paid game with a free demo. On Steam, a demo is free; Steam does not support a paywall that blocks play until the customer pays to continue the same game.

What each model asks players to pay for

Model What the player pays for What to evaluate Main risk or cost
Premium Full game access through an upfront purchase A complete experience whose value can be explained before purchase Purchase friction and price expectations relative to scope and comparable games
Free-to-play Free access, with optional purchases such as DLC or microtransactions Broad access, ongoing engagement, and optional spending that fits the game Acquiring and retaining players; transaction and backend operations if using microtransactions
Paid game with a free demo The full game is paid; the sample is free A game where hands-on play helps buyers understand its core loop or quality Making the demo polished and representative, and choosing its release timing

This is a decision framework based on Steam’s documented features and recommendations, not a measured ranking of which model earns more. The available platform guidance does not establish one model as best for indie games in general.

When premium pricing makes sense

Premium pricing is an upfront value exchange: the buyer pays once for access to the full game. It is worth considering when the experience is complete enough to assess from its store page, trailer, reviews, or demo, and its scope and support plan suit a one-time transaction.

Steam recommends evaluating expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer features, Early Access plans, comparable games, future promotions, reviews, and customer feedback. Compare games of a similar nature rather than assuming that a lower price is automatically more attractive. Steam states that pricing decisions are in the developer’s hands: Steamworks: Pricing.

#1 Best Overall
GameStop Physical Gift Card
  • Redeemable at US GameStop, EB Games, Babbage's, Electronic Boutique, EBX, Planet X, and Software Etc. stores. Also redeemable online at and GameStop.com and EBGames.com.
  • Over 6,100 stores located throughout the United States.
  • GameStop. Power to the Players.
  • Redemption: Instore and Online
  • No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
  • Compare the game’s scope and expected playtime with relevant titles.
  • Account for replay value, multiplayer, and whether the game will launch in Early Access.
  • Consider how planned promotions and customer feedback fit the initial price.
  • Set regional prices deliberately: Steam offers conversion tools based on exchange rates, purchasing power, or a combination of factors. A missing local-currency price can make a product unavailable to customers relying on that currency. See Steamworks: Currency and pricing tools.

When free-to-play is a fit—and what it requires

Free-to-play removes the upfront purchase and can support optional revenue through DLC or in-game purchases on Steam. That changes both the player’s path into the game and the team’s ongoing work. Steam specifically notes that player acquisition and retention matter for this model; free access by itself does not guarantee visibility or a large audience.

If the game uses Steam microtransactions, plan for the operational work behind them. Steam describes a need for a reliable, secure backend to manage transactions, inventory, entitlements, and fraud reconciliation. Optional spending should fit the experience, and the team should be able to support the systems that make purchases dependable. See Steamworks: Microtransactions.

Fortnite eGift Card | Powered by the Epic Games Store - $50

Steam says its store largely reacts to customer interest and counts in-game revenue for free-to-play titles in a manner similar to paid-game sales. Free-to-play games are generally not eligible for curated Daily Deals, Midweek Deals, or Weekend Deals spotlights, though other curated marketing may be possible depending on scale and success. These are platform-specific visibility details, not a promise of reach or sales; check Steamworks: Visibility for current guidance.

When a free demo can support a paid game

A demo is a sampling tool for a game that is still sold as a full paid product. It is useful to investigate when a short hands-on experience can answer questions a trailer or store page cannot—for example, whether the core loop feels engaging or the controls suit the player. Valve says customers generally use demos to inform a purchase decision and recommends that the demo be high quality and measure up to the full experience.

Steam generally recommends releasing a demo at launch, while acknowledging that an earlier release can make sense in some circumstances. A demo has its own store presence and can link players to the full game; Steam also says demos can appear where free games appear. Review the current Steamworks: Demos documentation when planning its content and timing.

What “paid demo” means on Steam

The phrase “paid demo” can mean different things: charging for a trial, selling a separate prologue, or releasing an Early Access game. Those are not interchangeable. Steam’s documented demo feature is free, and Steam says it does not support a model that blocks a customer and asks them to pay to continue playing the same game: Steamworks: Pricing FAQ.

For a Steam release, describe the standard demo as free and the full game as the paid product. The cited Steam guidance does not establish whether a separately packaged, independently sold prologue complies with every applicable rule; verify the current policy with Steamworks before choosing that structure. Do not assume Steam’s rules also apply to other stores.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. Define the product. Decide whether you are selling one complete game, an ongoing experience with optional purchases, or a paid game whose uncertainty can be reduced with a free sample.
  2. Test the premium case. Compare similar games, playtime, replayability, multiplayer, launch state, reviews, planned promotions, and customer feedback. Avoid choosing a price solely to undercut competitors.
  3. Test the free-to-play operation. Ask whether the team can acquire and retain players and whether optional purchases suit the design. Include the secure backend and transaction, inventory, entitlement, and fraud-management work if using microtransactions.
  4. Test the demo’s value. Identify what a sample would help a buyer judge, then make it representative and polished. Choose launch timing based on the game’s circumstances rather than treating early release as a universal rule.
  5. Plan regional pricing and platform details. Use Steam’s tools as a starting point, then consider local purchasing conditions and comparable entertainment products. Confirm current Steam pricing rules, currency coverage, and timing requirements in Steamworks before setting or changing prices.

Steam pricing details to verify before launch

Steam’s published pricing guidance describes package pricing and also supports DLC, in-game microtransactions, and recurring subscriptions. Platform thresholds and procedures can change, so confirm current details in Steamworks rather than treating them as permanent rules.

  • Steam documents pricing in 37 currencies and provides tools for managing prices and discounts.
  • Initial prices and proposed adjustments are reviewed by Valve and are usually processed within one or two business days.
  • Steam asks developers to wait 30 days after release before changing a price, with a stated exception for correcting a major pricing error. A price increase can trigger a 30-day discount cooldown.
  • Changing a paid game to free requires at least one week’s notice. For a free-to-paid change, owners of the free license retain the ability to play after the change, and Steam asks for one week’s notice about the business-model switch.
  • Steam’s minimum-price rules depend on its conversion method and include a lowest transaction price roughly equivalent to $0.49 USD. Check the current Steamworks pricing documentation for the applicable thresholds.

These figures and processes are Steam-specific. They do not establish a price for a particular game, genre, or audience, and platform policy should be rechecked at the time of release.
