Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The only confirmed difference between the versions is the player character’s outfit. If you are choosing today, pick the outfit you prefer, then treat Browt, Pombon and Gecqua as the meaningful early choice; do not pay extra or pre-order on the assumption that one version has exclusive Pokémon, a different story or a different map, because none of that has been announced.
If you want to play something Pokémon-related now, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the clearest current option on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Other titles mentioned in the February 27, 2026 Pokémon Presents roundup have different levels of confirmed detail and availability.

Pokémon Winds and Waves at a glance
| Question | What is confirmed |
|---|---|
| What are they? | Two new entries in the Pokémon video game series, presented as a paired release. |
| When do they launch? | 2027, with a simultaneous worldwide release. No exact day has been announced. |
| Where can you play them? | Exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2, according to The Pokémon Company’s announcement. |
| What kind of games are they? | Open-world adventures featuring windswept islands, a vast ocean and Pokémon ecosystems. |
| What differs between versions? | The player character’s outfit differs. Story, map, Pokémon availability and other gameplay differences are not established. |
| Who are the first partners? | Browt (Grass), Pombon (Fire) and Gecqua (Water). |
| Can you buy them now? | No. The announcement gives a year but no price, preorder date or edition contents. |
The official announcement also warns that its screenshots and footage show a product in development and are not final; actual gameplay may vary. Read the setting and format as confirmed direction rather than a complete mechanics specification. The Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves announcement is the primary source for these details.
What is actually known about Winds and Waves?
Release timing and platform
Both games are planned for a simultaneous worldwide launch in 2027. “Simultaneous worldwide” describes the planned timing, not a specific launch hour or day. The Pokémon Company has announced the games as Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives, so a Switch 2 is the required platform as currently announced. The announcement does not provide a launch price, preorder opening, retail listing or special-edition contents.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
That makes the purchase decision unusually simple for now: you can plan for the hardware, but you cannot yet complete a normal software purchase. Avoid listings or social posts that present a price or preorder as official unless they can be traced to a later announcement on an official Pokémon or Nintendo channel.
The setting and format
The games are described as open-world adventures. The announced world includes windswept islands, a vast ocean with glittering waves that ebb and flow, and Pokémon ecosystems in the region. Players will team up with Pokémon to face challenges and forces of nature. Those statements establish the broad setting and premise; they do not confirm a particular traversal system, battle rules, online mode, quest structure, performance target or map size.
Because the footage is from a product in development, do not treat a trailer animation as a promise that every interface, visual effect or mechanic will appear unchanged at release. The safest comparison is therefore between what the announcement names and what it leaves open.
The three first partners
| Pokémon | Announced description | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Browt | The Bean Chick Pokémon | Grass |
| Pombon | The Puppy Pokémon | Fire |
| Gecqua | The Water Gecko Pokémon | Water |
The official material confirms the names, short descriptions and types, but not their final moves, evolutions, abilities, statistics or comparative difficulty. There is no announced “best” starter. Choose based on design and the type you normally enjoy, rather than assuming one has an advantage that has not been published.
The confirmed version difference—and the unanswered ones
The announced distinction is visual: the outfit worn by the player character differs between versions. That is the complete confirmed version information at present. No official source cited for these games establishes version-exclusive Pokémon, different routes, a separate villain, a different island layout, altered story scenes, exclusive mechanics or different difficulty.
That limitation matters when deciding whether to buy one edition or both. A second copy may eventually have a trading or completion purpose, but there is no announced feature that justifies buying both now. Wait for a detailed version breakdown before treating the games as meaningfully different campaigns.
How to choose between Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves
1. Choose the character outfit
Since the outfit is the only announced version distinction, start there. Compare the official artwork and select the look you would rather see throughout an adventure. This is not a placeholder for a hidden mechanical difference; it is the only difference The Pokémon Company has confirmed.

2. Choose a starter independently of the version
Browt, Pombon and Gecqua are presented as the three partner choices, not as version-exclusive partners. Until an official update says otherwise, assume your starter decision is separate from whether you choose Winds or Waves. Grass, Fire and Water give the familiar type spread, but no official comparative ranking exists.
3. Do not use rumors to fill missing information
Fan speculation may suggest exclusive creatures or story branches, but it is not release information. Pokémon Support says that information about upcoming Pokémon titles will be posted at pokemon.com when it is made public and that it cannot answer questions about titles not announced there. Use that standard for version charts, preorder claims and alleged leaks.
4. Wait if you need a price or date before committing
The 2027 window is enough to plan, not enough to budget precisely. No exact day, price or preorder date is confirmed in the announcement. If you are buying a Switch 2 mainly for these games, wait for those details unless you already want the console for other software.
How Winds and Waves compare with other Pokémon choices
The following comparison separates playable products from announcements with limited public detail. A title appearing in a Pokémon Presents roundup does not automatically have a confirmed release date, feature list or current retail status.

| Pokémon Winds / Pokémon Waves | New open-world adventure across islands and ocean; three announced first partners. | Planned simultaneous worldwide release in 2027; Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive; no price or preorder date stated. | Players willing to wait for a new open-world Pokémon adventure and buy or already own Switch 2. |
| Pokémon Legends: Z-A | Action RPG set in Lumiose City while urban redevelopment is underway; Mega Evolution is a key feature. | Available on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Pokémon Legends: Z-A: the practical game to play while waiting
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the most concrete alternative if your priority is playing a substantial Pokémon game before Winds and Waves. Its official page lists it as available on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 and places the action in Lumiose City, where redevelopment is underway. Mega Evolution is a central feature of its premise. See the official Pokémon Legends: Z-A updates page for current availability information.
A separate announcement dated September 30, 2026 describes a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Mega Dimension bundle planned for October 29, 2026. The bundle includes the game and downloadable content on one game card. At the October 13 research date, that date was still upcoming, so confirm the live release status before making a purchase recommendation. The announcement also explains that the Switch 2 Edition can run on the original Switch, but on original Switch it has the same content as the Switch software and does not include additional features that use Switch 2 specifications. Read the September 30, 2026 bundle announcement for the edition qualification.

If you want Winds or Waves
- Plan for a Nintendo Switch 2, because the games are announced as exclusive to that system.
- Do not assume an original Nintendo Switch version will appear; none is announced.
- Do not treat a console purchase as a game preorder. The software price, preorder timing and edition contents are not stated.
- Use the official announcement for the 2027 window and check later official updates for a day, price and retailer availability.
If you want to play immediately
- Choose Pokémon Legends: Z-A if you have a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 and want a currently listed action RPG.
- Check the live Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack catalog before subscribing for Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.
- For FireRed, LeafGreen, Champions and Pokopia, verify the current product page because the roundup alone does not answer every purchase question.
What is not a necessary purchase
No game-specific accessory, guidebook, replacement part or merchandise is identified as necessary for Winds and Waves. The only enabling product established by the announcement is the Switch 2 platform. Avoid buying accessories marketed as required until Nintendo or The Pokémon Company publishes a real requirement.

A decision guide for different players
You already own a Switch 2
Watch Winds and Waves if the open-world islands-and-ocean setting appeals to you. You can defer the edition choice until more information arrives; today, outfit preference is the rational deciding factor. If you want a game now, consider Pokémon Legends: Z-A instead of waiting through the 2027 window.
Recommended Free Tools
You own only the original Switch
Winds and Waves are not announced for your console, so they are not currently playable on it. You can play Pokémon Legends: Z-A on original Switch, subject to the edition and feature limitations described in the official announcement, or choose another title whose current platform is confirmed.
You are deciding whether to buy Switch 2 for these games
Wait for the exact release date, price and technical details if Winds and Waves are your sole reason for upgrading. The games are confirmed enough to establish the platform requirement and 2027 window, but not enough to calculate the total cost or judge performance.
You want a second version for trading or completion
Do not assume that need yet. The announcement confirms only different character outfits. Wait for official information about version-exclusive content before buying both editions.
How to follow reliable updates
Use the official Winds and Waves announcement for the current platform, year, setting, starters and outfit distinction. Use Pokémon’s news pages for dated announcements and Pokémon Support’s guidance for the publication standard. The support article, “What new Pokémon games are being developed?”, says upcoming-title information will be posted on pokemon.com when public.

- Check the date on any announcement, since release timing and product availability can change.
- Confirm whether a statement comes from an official Pokémon or Nintendo page rather than a rumor account.
- Separate “announced” from “available”: a 2027 game can be real without being purchasable.
- For version comparisons, require a specific official statement about story, map, Pokémon or mechanics before treating a difference as fact.
- For dated products such as the Legends: Z-A bundle, verify whether the announced date has passed and whether the product is actually listed in your region.
Bottom line: which Pokémon game should you choose?
Choose Pokémon Winds or Pokémon Waves based on the character outfit you prefer, because that is the only confirmed version difference. Choose Browt, Pombon or Gecqua according to your preferred type and design, not an unannounced power ranking. Plan on Nintendo Switch 2 and a 2027 wait, with no confirmed price or preorder date yet.
If you need something playable now, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the best-supported current alternative on Switch and Switch 2. Treat Champions, Pokopia, the classic rereleases and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness as separate options whose exact availability or details must be checked against their current official listings.
