Choose RuneScape 3 (RS3)—the name players commonly use for the modern game Jagex generally labels simply “RuneScape”—if you want the modern version, a broader documented skill menu, and a choice between Evolution of Combat and Legacy combat.
You do not have to make a permanent account decision. One Jagex account can access both games, but each version has an independent character, inventory, statistics and quest progress. The most reliable test is to play both long enough to complete an early objective, train a skill and fight with the default combat setup. Keep the version whose everyday loop you would voluntarily repeat.

First, understand what you are choosing
OSRS and RuneScape are separate games in practical terms, even though Jagex lets one account access both. OSRS launched in 2013 as a backup version based on RuneScape from 2007. Jagex says it has since evolved into its own experience, so “old school” does not mean that development stopped in 2007.

RuneScape 3 is the community’s common shorthand for the current mainline game. Jagex’s official pages normally call it “RuneScape.” It is the modern continuation with its own systems, skills, quests, interfaces and combat options. Your choice is therefore between two actively maintained games with shared ancestry, not between a live game and an untouched historical snapshot.

OSRS versus RS3 at a glance
| Decision factor | Old School RuneScape | RuneScape (often called RS3) | Best question to ask yourself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core identity | A distinct game based on the 2007-era version, launched separately in 2013 and expanded since then. | The modern RuneScape game with current systems and a large accumulated quest and activity catalogue. | Do I want a distinct old-school branch or the modern continuation? |
| Development direction | Jagex presents major proposals to players in polls. A proposal needs at least 75% approval to pass, and the official join page says more than 1,000 questions have been polled since 2013. | Content and systems are delivered through the modern game’s regular development process and official guides. | How important is a formal community-vote model to me? |
| Combat | Its own OSRS combat system and rhythm. | Evolution of Combat (EoC) adds abilities; Legacy mode uses conventional auto-attacks and some weapon special attacks. Choose OSRS if community-led development and an old-school identity matter most
What “old school” means in practice
OSRS starts from the 2007-era RuneScape foundation, but its present-day identity comes from the decisions made after the 2013 launch. Jagex describes it as a community-led game. New proposals can be put to a player poll, and the official OSRS page says a proposal passes at 75% or higher.
That threshold gives OSRS a distinctive development culture: players are not merely receiving a historical rule set; they are participating in whether substantial additions fit the game. Jagex’s current join page reports more than 1,000 polled questions since release. Those figures describe the polling record on that page, not a promise that every future update will use an identical process.
Recommended Free Tools
This model suits a player who wants the game’s direction to be visibly negotiated with its community. It may be less attractive if you prefer a developer-controlled roadmap or want every proposed feature to arrive without a vote.
How OSRS progression is presented
Jagex’s current OSRS join page lists 23 skills and highlights quests, raids and bosses. The smaller published skill count does not mean a small game: the meaningful choice is how those skills connect to training routes, equipment requirements, activities and group goals. Before deciding, look at whether the early tasks—gathering, crafting, combat training or quest prerequisites—make you want to plan the next step.

OSRS is a good fit when the pleasure is in setting your own route through a recognisable rule set, gradually unlocking access and learning efficient methods from other players. Choose it because that loop appeals to you, not because “old” automatically means simpler or easier.
Choose RuneScape 3 if you want the modern ecosystem and more combat configuration
A broader documented skill and activity menu
Jagex’s dedicated RuneScape Skills guide lists 29 skills. Another official marketing page says 28, so do not treat either figure as a permanently fixed product specification; the dedicated guide is the more appropriate reference when comparing the current skill catalogue. The practical difference is that RS3 presents a broader set of progression tracks, equipment unlocks, locations, activities and quests in its official overview.
That breadth suits returning players who remember RuneScape as a long-running world and want to see the modern continuation rather than recreate the 2007 starting point. It also suits players who enjoy maintaining several progression projects at once—such as combat, gathering, production and quest requirements—without committing to a single narrow route.
Modern RuneScape does not force one combat interface
RS3 offers two named combat modes. Evolution of Combat uses abilities that you activate during a fight. Legacy mode uses regular auto-attacks and retains some weapon special attacks, producing a more traditional input pattern. Jagex’s support article explains that the modes have separate interface and combat components and that you can mix and match them.
Read the exact explanation in Legacy Mode and EoC mode. The important choice is not “action combat versus turn-based combat.” Both are RuneScape combat modes; the distinction is how attacks, abilities and the interface are presented.

Pick EoC if activating and arranging abilities sounds engaging. Pick Legacy within RS3 if you want conventional attacks while keeping access to the modern game’s broader systems. If neither feels right, test OSRS rather than assuming one RS3 setting represents the entire choice.
Combat: compare the decisions you make during a fight
| Combat option | What you do | Who may prefer it | What to test |
|---|---|---|---|
| OSRS combat | Use OSRS’s own combat rules, timing and equipment choices. | Players who want the old-school game loop and its established combat identity. | Fight a few ordinary enemies, then try a stronger target and notice whether preparation and timing feel satisfying. |
| RS3 Evolution of Combat | Use ability-based actions alongside equipment and resource management. | Players who like active ability selection and a configurable modern interface. | Set up an ability bar and see whether choosing or arranging abilities improves the fight rather than adding friction. |
| RS3 Legacy mode | Rely on regular auto-attacks and some weapon special attacks. | Players who want a traditional-feeling control scheme while staying in modern RuneScape. | Switch the interface and combat components independently to find a comfortable combination. |
Do not judge from a single tutorial encounter. Combat feel changes when you have to select equipment, manage resources, move between targets and decide whether an ability or special attack is worth using. Spend enough time in each mode to perform those decisions yourself.
Can I use the same account, and does progress transfer?
One account can open both games
Jagex says one RuneScape account provides access to both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. This makes trying both versions practical: you do not need a second identity simply to compare them.
Characters and items remain separate
Access is shared; progression is not. Jagex Support states: “Profile progress is completely independent, meaning that character information, stats, and items do not transfer between the two games.” Your OSRS levels, bank, quests and equipment cannot be carried into RS3, and RS3 progress cannot be moved into OSRS.

Returning players should therefore log into each version before assuming their old character is missing. The profile you remember may exist only in one game. Treat the other client as a new character unless its own account history proves otherwise.
How membership applies
Jagex’s Managing Subscriptions support information says membership applies to both versions for a character and unlocks additional game content. That benefit does not synchronize stats or items. Subscription prices, billing rules and regional terms can change, so check the current account page before paying; the available sources do not establish one universal price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A step-by-step way to choose
- Recover or create the account you plan to use. Open both clients with the same Jagex account so you are comparing like with like. Check each profile’s name, statistics and items before starting a new character.
- Write down the progression you actually want. If you remember a specific character, quest line or collection, identify which version contains it. If you are new, list three activities you expect to repeat—questing, skill training, bossing, raids, exploration or economic planning—and use them as your test.
- Play OSRS through a complete early loop. Train at least one skill, finish an early quest or objective and fight several enemies. Pay attention to whether the slower planning and old-school rhythm feel rewarding rather than merely familiar.
- Play RS3 with both relevant combat setups. Try EoC long enough to arrange and use abilities, then test Legacy mode. Because interface and combat can be mixed, change one component at a time so you know what you prefer.
- Compare progression menus, not screenshots. Open the OSRS join information and the RuneScape Skills guide. Count is only a starting point: ask whether the available skills, equipment unlocks, activities and quests give you goals you want to pursue.
- Evaluate the development culture. If the idea of player polls and a 75% passing threshold is a major attraction, that is a strong OSRS signal. If you would rather follow the modern game’s larger accumulated system set without making every addition a community vote, RS3 may fit better.
- Choose the loop you would repeat without a reward attached. Ignore which client looks more familiar or which version another player calls superior. Your practical answer is the game in which ordinary training, travel, combat and planning remain enjoyable after the first session.
Recommendations by player type
You played RuneScape years ago and want your old routine
Start by checking both profiles. If your remembered items and levels are in one version, continuity may outweigh every other factor. If the character is not where expected, do not recreate progress immediately; verify the account and client first, then decide whether a fresh start in the other version is acceptable.
You want community influence over new content
Lean OSRS. Its official page explicitly describes polling and a 75% approval threshold, and reports more than 1,000 polled questions since 2013. Understand that this is a development model, not a guarantee that every personal suggestion will pass.
You want the largest documented skill menu
Lean RS3 based on Jagex’s dedicated guide, which lists 29 skills versus 23 on the OSRS join page. Because another official marketing page says 28 for RuneScape, use the guide as a current reference and do not treat the count as a promise that the pages will always match.
Best Value
You want ability-based combat
Start with RS3’s Evolution of Combat. If the modern game’s other systems appeal to you but the ability interface does not, test Legacy mode before abandoning RS3.
You want a traditional control pattern but modern RuneScape content
Try RS3 Legacy mode. It uses regular auto-attacks and some weapon special attacks, and Jagex allows the interface and combat choices to be configured separately.
You are completely undecided
Use the same account to play both, keep the sessions comparable and make the decision after each game has given you a real quest, training task and combat encounter. The choice is reversible at the account-access level, but any time invested in one character stays in that version.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Expecting item or level transfers: They do not occur. Plan each profile as an independent character.
- Assuming OSRS is frozen at launch: It began from 2007-era RuneScape but has evolved since 2013, including ongoing community polling.
- Calling RS3 only “action combat”: EoC uses abilities, but RS3 also offers Legacy combat and lets you mix interface and combat settings.
- Using a skill count as a quality score: The official pages themselves show a 28-versus-29 discrepancy for RuneScape. Compare the activities and goals you will pursue, not just the headline number.
- Buying membership before testing the loop: Membership unlocks additional content, but it cannot make the two profiles share progress. Sample the free-access experience first and confirm current subscription terms.
- Choosing because another player says one is better: The games prioritize different identities, progression structures and combat preferences. A personal trial is more informative than a universal ranking.
Where to verify current details
Use Jagex’s official pages when labels or policies change:
- RuneScape and Old School for account access and independent profiles.
- Play Old School Now! for OSRS’s current skill listing and polling description.
- RuneScape Skills guide for the dedicated modern skill catalogue.
- RuneScape – Game Info for Jagex’s general modern-game overview.
- Legacy Mode and EoC mode for combat and interface configuration.
- Managing Subscriptions for membership-account guidance.
- Play RuneScape for Free for the modern game’s current join information.
Make the choice by the loop, not the label
OSRS is the stronger match for a player drawn to a distinct 2007-based identity, community polling and its particular combat and progression rhythm. RuneScape 3 is the stronger match for a player who wants the modern continuation, a broader documented skills ecosystem and the ability to choose EoC or Legacy combat. One account lets you test both, but separate profiles mean the character you build in one remains there. Play each version long enough to do real work, then stay with the one whose next session sounds appealing before anyone else tells you which game you should prefer.
