Choose the console around the games you want to play and where you want to play them—not a universal “best” brand. Nintendo Switch 2 is the distinct option if handheld and tabletop play matter; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are home-console families with different models and ecosystems. Before buying, check the exact games, disc and storage needs, existing library, friends’ platforms, and the full cost of hardware, games, memberships, and accessories.
Start with the games you actually want
Write down the specific games or franchises you expect to play, then check their current platform availability. A brand’s reputation is less useful than whether the games you care about are available on that model. Also ask where your friends play: choosing the same platform can simplify playing together, though support for online multiplayer varies by game.

Nintendo Switch 2: handheld, tabletop, or TV
Switch 2 is the practical choice to investigate if you want one system that can move between handheld play, tabletop play, and a television. Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch 1920×1080 LCD, 256 GB of internal storage, and an estimated battery life of approximately 2–6.5 hours depending on the game. In TV mode, it can output up to 3840×2160 at 60 fps when the game and display support it. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications and confirm that its game library fits your needs.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S: home-console families
For a system intended mainly for TV play, compare the PlayStation 5 family with Xbox Series X|S. Your choice may hinge on the games you want, the platform your friends use, and whether you need a disc drive or more storage. Xbox offers distinct Series X and Series S configurations; check the exact model and its storage before purchasing. Xbox says compatible storage expansion cards connect through a dedicated port and replicate the console’s custom SSD experience. Details are on the Xbox Series X page and in its console-options overview.

PS5 or PS5 Pro
Sony lists both PS5 and PS5 Pro in the United States. The Pro is positioned for improved visuals in supported games, so its potential benefit depends on the games you play and the display you own. Check the live listing for the model’s price and disc-drive configuration rather than assuming every version includes the same setup. Sony’s US site displayed PS5 Pro “Buy from $899.00” on October 7, 2026; that is a time-sensitive US starting-price listing, not a universal or guaranteed retailer price. Sony announced price changes for PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal on March 27, 2026, effective April 2, 2026. Check the current PlayStation US listings and the price-change announcement for current details.

Xbox Series X or Series S
Do not treat “Xbox” as one fixed configuration: compare the specific Series X or Series S option you intend to buy. Check storage capacity against the games you plan to keep installed, whether the model meets your disc needs, and the current price of any compatible expansion card if you expect to need one. The cited Xbox materials describe the expansion-card system but do not establish a current price or a directly comparable US console price.

Work out the full cost, not just the console price
There is no complete, directly comparable current three-platform price table established here, and prices and service plans vary by country and date. Check live regional listings before deciding. Add the items you will actually need:
- Console configuration: Compare the exact model and whether a disc drive is included or needed.
- Games: Price the specific titles on your list, including physical or digital versions where relevant.
- Online features: Nintendo identifies a separately sold Nintendo Switch Online membership for applicable online features. Treat PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass as potential ongoing costs too, and verify current plans and prices in your region.
- Storage: Account for available internal space and any expansion you expect to buy. Xbox storage expansion cards are model-specific accessories, so check compatibility and current cost.
- Accessories: Include only extras you need, and verify that controllers or other accessories work with the exact console model.
A lower hardware price does not necessarily mean a lower-cost setup if it needs extra storage, a membership, or games you would otherwise already own on another platform.

Make the final choice
- List your must-play games. Confirm each one is available for the specific console model you are considering.
- Decide where you will play. If handheld or tabletop use is essential, weigh Switch 2’s flexible modes against the home-console families.
- Check your existing library and social circle. Verify game compatibility and find out which platforms your friends use for the games you share.
- Choose a model and media setup. Compare PS5 with PS5 Pro, or Xbox Series X with Series S; check disc-drive needs and storage rather than deciding by brand name alone.
- Price the complete setup in your country. Check current console and game listings, any online membership, storage, and required accessories before committing.
