For a first playthrough, choose Metro 2033 Redux first: it begins Artyom’s story in 2033, while Metro: Last Light Redux continues it in 2034. They are two sequential games, not alternate editions of the same game. If you have already finished the first, continue with Last Light Redux.

Start with Metro 2033 Redux. It introduces Artyom and the setting before Last Light Redux develops the story. Playing in release or story order also avoids beginning with the consequences of the first game’s events.

Consider whether Last Light Redux’s Survival and Spartan approaches, and its included previously released DLC, fit what you want. Those features are reasons to compare editions and preferences—not proof that it is categorically better than Metro 2033 Redux.

What about the 2026 update?
Deep Silver announced a free update for existing owners, planned for October 22, 2026 on PC and October 29, 2026 on consoles, with hardware and quality-of-life improvements. The announcement said full patch notes would arrive at launch. Is one objectively better?
The official descriptions establish differences in story, Redux treatment, modes and included content, but they do not provide a controlled head-to-head test of performance, difficulty, atmosphere or overall quality. Which one suits you depends most clearly on whether you need the story’s starting point, have already played the first game, and prefer the options listed for Last Light Redux.
