How to Choose Between Managed Detection and Response and an In-House SOC

Choose managed detection and response (MDR) when you need dependable monitoring and response quickly, cannot staff specialist coverage around the clock, or prefer a service model. Choose an in-house security operations center (SOC) when you can sustain skilled coverage and need maximum control over telemetry, detection engineering, investigations and response decisions. A deliberate hybrid—internal governance and incident command with MDR handling continuous operations—often provides the best balance.

What MDR and an in-house SOC actually are

Managed detection and response

MDR is a cybersecurity service that combines technology, continuous monitoring, threat hunting and human analysts. A typical service reviews telemetry, prioritizes alerts, investigates suspicious activity, helps contain incidents, performs root-cause analysis and delivers recurring reports. Microsoft defines MDR as advanced detection paired with rapid incident response and human expertise.

The service boundary varies significantly. One provider may monitor endpoint and identity data continuously but require your staff to approve every containment action. Another may be authorized to isolate hosts or disable accounts under preapproved conditions. “24/7 MDR” can mean analysts watch alerts at all times, while response remains on-call or limited to certain systems. Treat coverage, authority and escalation as contract terms rather than assumptions.

In-house security operations center

An in-house SOC is an internal operating function that owns monitoring, detection, investigation, response coordination and recovery. It may be one security employee supported by other IT staff, a team working business hours with on-call escalation, or a fully staffed operation with shifts and specialist functions.

NIST notes that team composition can range from a single internal cybersecurity role to a complete internal team, external support, or a mix. The appropriate design depends on budget, existing capabilities, risk level and cybersecurity or privacy requirements; there is no universal head-count threshold that makes a SOC “real.”

Start with the capability you need, not the operating model

Use the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and CISA Cybersecurity Performance Goals to identify outcomes your organization must achieve before deciding who operates them. Define the consequences you are trying to prevent: prolonged ransomware impact, unauthorized access to sensitive data, disruption of production systems, regulatory reporting failures or loss of customer trust.

  • Required coverage: business-hours alert review, 24/7 triage, 24/7 response, or on-call escalation.
  • Critical assets: endpoints, identities, cloud workloads, SaaS, network controls, operational technology and business-critical applications.
  • Response objectives: how quickly suspicious activity must be acknowledged, investigated, contained and escalated.
  • Decision ownership: which actions require a business, legal, privacy or safety approval.
  • Evidence requirements: retention, chain of custody, regulatory records and access to case history.

Only after these requirements are explicit can you compare MDR with internal staffing fairly.

MDR versus an in-house SOC: the decision factors

Decision axis MDR In-house SOC
Coverage A provider can supply continuous or 24/7 monitoring and hunting, depending on the contract. You must recruit, retain and schedule enough people for required hours, leave, training and surge capacity.
Speed to capability Usually faster access to specialist analysts without equivalent new headcount. Slower while recruiting, integrating tools and building procedures, but the capability becomes internally owned.
Control and customization Telemetry scope, playbooks and permitted actions are constrained by the service agreement. Some services extend to selected non-native data sources through an integrated SIEM. Highest control over data, detections, workflows, priorities and response decisions.
Internal workload Lower operational staffing burden, but your organization still supplies governance, business context, escalation contacts and approvals. Highest burden for staffing, management, facilities, training, on-call rotations and process maintenance.
Cost shape Recurring service fees plus onboarding, integrations, retained internal roles, overages, minimum terms and exit work. Personnel, recruiting, facilities, SIEM and endpoint tools, training, shift coverage, management and incident-response costs.
Response authority Must be written precisely. Some providers act directly; others investigate and guide your team. Internal analysts can act directly under your own approvals and playbooks.
Data and compliance Review residency, retention, subcontractors, evidence access and regulatory obligations before signing. Data remains under your control, but your organization carries the compliance and operating burden.
Exit and resilience Test portability of detections, telemetry, cases and response evidence before committing. Capability remains internal, but key-person, turnover and hiring risks require active management.

Coverage is more than a “24/7” label

Ask what happens at 03:00 in your time zone when an identity is used from an unfamiliar country and a critical server begins encrypting files. A credible coverage description specifies who sees the alert, who investigates, how quickly someone contacts you, and who can contain the threat when your staff do not answer.

Questions to pin down

  • Are analysts continuously watching alerts, or are alerts queued for periodic review?
  • Which time zones, languages and holidays are covered?
  • Does “24/7” include active containment or only notification?
  • What are the service-level definitions for acknowledgement, investigation, containment and escalation?
  • What happens if your on-call contact cannot be reached?

An internal SOC faces the same questions, but must solve them with recruiting, shift design, cross-training and an on-call policy. A small team may provide excellent business-hours investigation yet be unable to sustain overnight response without external support.

Response authority must be designed before procurement

Detection without an agreed action path creates delay during the incident that matters most. For every potentially disruptive action, name the actor, approval and deadline.

Action Questions to answer
Isolate an endpoint or server Can the provider do it automatically? Which production systems are excluded? Who approves release?
Disable an identity or revoke sessions Can this occur without confirmation? How are emergency and privileged accounts handled?
Block an indicator Which firewall, DNS, email or endpoint controls may be changed, and how is business impact checked?
Preserve evidence Who collects images, logs and timelines? What retention and chain-of-custody standard applies?
Recover systems Who decides that containment is complete and authorizes restoration or rebuilding?

Microsoft describes services in which analysts may take action or guide the customer. CrowdStrike identifies response capability as the main differentiator of MDR. Those descriptions illustrate why “MDR” alone is not a sufficient specification: the practical value depends on the permissions you grant and the provider’s operating procedures.

Compare total cost, not a subscription against salaries

Costs an internal SOC carries

  • Recruiting, compensation, benefits, retention incentives and management.
  • Shift premiums, on-call compensation, leave coverage and surge staffing.
  • SIEM, endpoint detection, identity, network, cloud and case-management tools.
  • Facilities, secure access, hardware, training, certifications and exercises.
  • Detection engineering, content maintenance, threat intelligence and incident response.
  • Turnover, succession planning and the cost of unfilled specialist positions.

ESET characterizes an in-house SOC as generally the most expensive model because of staffing, facilities, tools and training, but the actual result depends on the coverage and capability you require.

Costs an MDR engagement carries

  • Recurring fees and any minimum data, user, endpoint or log-volume commitments.
  • Onboarding, connector development, tuning, migration and integration work.
  • Internal staff who provide architecture, approvals, business context and escalation.
  • Charges for additional telemetry, incident-response retainers, custom detections or excess volume.
  • Contract minimums, renewal changes, data export and replacement work at exit.

An MDR quote is not comparable to a salary line unless both calculations include the same hours, tools, response authority, retention and management responsibilities. Build a multi-year total-cost model with a separate line for duties that remain internal.

A practical selection method

  1. Define outcomes and risk tolerance. Document the incidents you must detect, the maximum tolerable delay and the business decisions that cannot be delegated.
  2. Inventory the environment. List endpoints, identities, cloud platforms, SaaS, network controls, OT or other specialized systems, log sources, retention requirements and critical applications.
  3. Set coverage hours. Choose business-hours monitoring, 24/7 triage, 24/7 response or on-call escalation for each asset class.
  4. Write response authority down. Create an action matrix covering isolation, account disablement, indicator blocking, evidence preservation and recovery. Include approval requirements and escalation deadlines.
  5. Model total cost of ownership. Include personnel, recruiting, facilities, tooling, training, shifts, management and incident response for an internal option; include subscription scope, onboarding, integrations, retained roles, overages, minimum terms and exit work for MDR.
  6. Score customization and context. Test whether a provider can understand proprietary applications, unusual data flows, data-sovereignty constraints and your normal administrative activity. Compare that result with your internal detection-engineering capacity.
  7. Pilot with representative telemetry. Require sample alerts, escalation exercises, false-positive tuning, reporting and evidence reviews. Measure time to acknowledge, time to contain, investigation quality and business disruption rather than accepting marketing claims.
  8. Choose hybrid intentionally when it fits. Keep architecture, risk acceptance, incident command and business decisions internal while assigning continuous monitoring, hunting or surge response to MDR.

Questions for an MDR shortlist

  • Which data sources are included, excluded or priced separately?
  • Is monitoring genuinely continuous, and which time zones and languages are covered?
  • Who may isolate endpoints, disable identities, block indicators or make cloud changes?
  • What happens when the provider cannot reach our on-call contact?
  • Which detections are tuned to our environment, and who owns the rules and playbooks?
  • What are the service-level definitions for acknowledgement, investigation, containment and escalation?
  • How are evidence, case history and regulatory records exported at termination?
  • Which subcontractors process telemetry, and where is data stored?
  • How does the service integrate with our existing SOC, SIEM, EDR, ticketing and incident-command process?

When an in-house SOC is the stronger choice

An internal operation is usually preferable when security decisions depend on deep knowledge of proprietary systems, when data cannot leave a defined jurisdiction, or when you need to control every detection and response workflow. It also makes sense when security operations are a strategic capability you can staff, train and manage over the long term.

Readiness checks

  • A named owner can fund staffing, tools and continuous improvement.
  • Recruiting plans cover analysts, detection engineers, incident responders and managers—not only an initial hire.
  • There is a sustainable shift or on-call design with leave and surge coverage.
  • Telemetry is available, normalized and retained for the investigations you expect.
  • Playbooks define approvals, communications, evidence handling and recovery.
  • Performance measures are reviewed regularly and lead to tuning or process changes.

If these conditions are not yet true, an internal label does not create dependable coverage. Start with a smaller internal function and add managed monitoring or response while building the missing capabilities.

When MDR is the stronger choice

MDR is a practical fit when you need specialist capability faster than you can hire it, have a small security team overwhelmed by alert volume, or require continuous monitoring that your current staff cannot sustain. It can also provide surge capacity during a major incident or while an internal SOC is being built.

Buying MDR does not transfer every responsibility. Your organization still owns risk acceptance, asset and identity context, business-impact decisions, executive communications, legal and regulatory coordination, and the quality of the access and telemetry you provide.

How a hybrid SOC works

A hybrid model is not simply “outsourced monitoring.” Define the boundary so both teams know who is on point.

Capability Typical internal owner Typical MDR contribution
Security architecture and telemetry strategy Set standards, approve integrations and manage risk. Advise on coverage gaps and data quality.
Continuous monitoring and hunting Set priorities and review outcomes. Operate queues, hunt across agreed data and escalate findings.
Detection engineering Own business logic, exceptions and acceptance criteria. Develop or tune rules under documented ownership.
Incident command Lead business, legal, privacy and recovery decisions. Provide investigation, containment support and an evidence timeline.
Surge response Approve emergency actions and coordinate stakeholders. Supply additional analysts, hunting and response capacity.

Microsoft explicitly positions its Defender Experts service as augmenting rather than replacing a SOC, and NIST recognizes mixed internal and external support. The same principle applies regardless of provider: retain governance and high-impact decisions internally while outsourcing only the operations you can specify and measure.

Data handling, compliance and exit planning

Before sharing telemetry, document where data is stored and processed, which subcontractors can access it, how long logs and cases are retained, and how evidence is retrieved for an investigation or regulator. Confirm whether sensitive fields can be masked and whether the provider can meet your jurisdictional and contractual requirements.

Exit planning should be tested before signing. Require usable exports of detection rules, playbooks, telemetry configurations, case history, timelines and response evidence. Establish a transition period and identify who will operate monitoring if the contract ends or the provider suffers an outage. An internal SOC avoids supplier portability issues but must plan for staff departures and loss of key-person knowledge.

Common failure modes and fixes

Buying “24/7” without defining response

Failure: The provider watches alerts overnight but cannot isolate systems without a reachable customer.

Fix: Specify authority, contact escalation, deadlines and automatic actions for each asset class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing only monthly price

Failure: A low MDR fee excludes critical logs and leaves a small internal team with the hardest work.

Fix: Compare equivalent coverage, retained duties, tooling, training, response and exit costs over the same period.

Sending incomplete telemetry

Failure: The service cannot distinguish administrator activity from compromise because identity, cloud or application logs are missing.

Fix: Inventory sources, test representative data during a pilot and assign ownership for connector health and retention.

Ignoring business context

Failure: Analysts repeatedly escalate approved maintenance or disrupt a critical process.

Fix: Supply asset criticality, maintenance windows, identity roles and escalation contacts; review false positives with the provider or internal engineering team.

Leaving ownership ambiguous

Failure: Both teams assume the other will preserve evidence, notify leadership or close the incident.

Fix: Use a RACI-style matrix for detection, investigation, containment, communications, recovery and post-incident improvement.

A concise decision rule

  • Pick MDR if speed, specialist access and dependable continuous operations outweigh the need for maximum internal control.
  • Pick an in-house SOC if you can sustain skilled coverage and your risk profile requires deep customization, direct authority or strict data control.
  • Pick a hybrid model if governance, architecture and business decisions must stay internal but continuous monitoring, hunting or surge response are difficult to staff.

Whichever model you select, make coverage, telemetry, response authority, data handling, service levels, retained responsibilities and exit portability measurable. Those terms—not the label on the service—determine whether incidents are found and contained when your organization needs it.
