They measure different outcomes: a large number in one category does not prove success in another. Match the metric to your goal and compare similar content over a consistent time period.
What followers, likes, and views measure
Followers: audience size and change
Your follower count is a snapshot of audience size. To understand growth, track how it changes over a consistent period and consider both new follows and unfollows. Net growth does not show whether followers see or interact with each post, or whether the audience is relevant to your goals.

Likes: reactions to content
Likes are a post-level reaction. A like shows that someone chose to respond, but the count alone does not tell you how many unique accounts saw the post, whether viewers followed you, or whether it led to an inquiry or sale. Public like counts can also be hidden, so visible counts are not always available for comparison. Meta announced these controls in 2021: Giving People More Control on Instagram and Facebook.

Views: exposure, including repeat plays
Views indicate how often content was played or displayed under the definitions attributed to Meta by a 2026 explainer. Repeat exposure can count again, so views are not the same as unique people reached. A view by itself does not establish a like, follow, click, or sale. For current definitions and distinctions such as reach, consult Instagram’s available insights; the detailed definitions cited here come from a secondary explainer rather than a directly verified first-party reference: Instagram’s Insights, Metric by Metric, as Meta’s Own Documentation Defines Them.

Choose the metric that fits your goal
| Goal | Start with | Also examine |
|---|---|---|
| Grow the account’s audience | Net follower change over a consistent period | Unfollows and whether new followers are relevant |
| Get reactions to a specific post | Likes | Comments, saves, shares, and content format |
| Increase exposure or repeat plays | Views | Unique reach where available, then interactions and resulting follows |
| Generate inquiries or sales | None of these counts alone | Profile or contact actions and the business outcome you track |
These are practical ways to select a measure, not claims that Instagram officially ranks accounts by these numbers. The available sources do not establish a universal best metric or current ranking formula.
Compare like with like
When judging performance, compare content with a reasonably similar format and time window. Metric availability and definitions can differ by format, so a count from one kind of content may not be directly comparable with a count from another. Avoid treating a bigger number as proof of a more valuable audience: views may include repeat plays, likes are reactions, and followers are an audience total.
Rank #2
- For growth, look at follower change over the same length of time and account for unfollows.
- For post response, treat likes as one interaction measure rather than a complete picture; include other relevant interactions when available.
- For exposure, use views alongside unique reach where available, then consider whether that exposure led to the action you wanted.
Why visible counts and artificial engagement need care
Public like counts are not a dependable basis for comparing every post or account because people can hide counts on their feed and on their own posts. Meta’s 2021 announcement describes those controls, but check Instagram’s current settings for the exact options available to you.

Meta has described services that artificially inflate likes and followers, including bot-based activity, as fake engagement and reported legal action against providers. In 2019, Instagram also described action involving fake likes, views, and followers and efforts to detect and remove inauthentic activity. See Meta’s 2020 statement on fake engagement and Instagram’s 2019 statement on inauthentic behavior.
