Choose Immich if automatic backup from an Android or iPhone is your priority. Its official mobile apps back up selected device albums, skip duplicates with checksums, and can mirror albums on the server. Choose PhotoPrism if you prefer a browser-first catalog built around detailed filters, labels, maps, metadata and face recognition, and you are comfortable pairing it with a separate phone-backup app such as PhotoSync. In either case, verify the server requirements, test your own archive, and keep an independent backup: neither application should be your only copy of irreplaceable photos.
Start with the workflow you actually need
Immich and PhotoPrism are both self-hosted photo and video management systems, but they emphasize different jobs. Immich puts a first-party phone-to-server backup workflow at the center of its experience. PhotoPrism emphasizes cataloging and discovery in a web browser, with extensive filtering and metadata handling.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters more than a feature checklist. A household that mainly wants every new phone photo copied to a home server has a different requirement from a photographer organizing years of files by labels, location, camera metadata and quality. The following table is a practical starting point.
| Your priority | Better first candidate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic backup from selected Android or iOS albums | Immich | Its official mobile apps support selected albums, checksum-based duplicate skipping, Wi-Fi-only operation by default and optional server-album mirroring. |
| Browser-first browsing with many combined filters | PhotoPrism | Its documented catalog supports filters for labels, location, resolution, color, chroma and quality, plus maps, automatic labels and face recognition. |
| Sharing albums with expiring links | PhotoPrism may fit better | PhotoPrism documents secret album links with expiration dates and no recipient registration. Immich documents albums and shared albums, but the reviewed summaries do not establish identical permission controls. |
| One integrated mobile and server experience | Immich | The mobile backup function is part of the project rather than a separate service. |
| Existing NAS with limited memory | Check both against the hardware first | The published minimums differ and are not a controlled speed benchmark. |
Read the choice as a workflow decision, not a claim that one product recognizes faces or searches objects more accurately. The official pages reviewed do not provide a controlled head-to-head test for speed, recognition accuracy or reliability on a particular NAS.

How phone backup differs
Immich: integrated mobile backup
Immich documents Android and iOS apps that can back up selected albums from the device. The app can skip files already present by comparing checksums, operate over Wi-Fi only (the default), and mirror a device album as an album on the server. Those controls are useful when you want camera-roll protection without uploading screenshots, downloads or messaging attachments.
iOS imposes an important limitation: “iOS automatically manages background tasks; the app cannot control when the background upload task will run.” Keep Background App Refresh enabled, and expect the operating system to decide when a background transfer gets time. A backup that is immediate while the app is open may be delayed when the phone is idle. See the Immich mobile-backup documentation for the current settings and behavior.
PhotoPrism: pair the catalog with a backup app
PhotoPrism identifies PhotoSync as a way to back up iOS and Android phones in the background. That means the backup experience depends on the phone, PhotoSync configuration, network permissions and the destination you choose, while PhotoPrism handles indexing and presentation after files arrive.
If phone backup is decisive, test PhotoSync with the actual phones, Wi-Fi network, battery settings and destination before committing to a migration. A workflow that works on one operating-system version or router is not proof that it will behave the same way in your home.
Browsing, search and sharing
Immich’s discovery model
Immich’s project feature list includes metadata, object, face and CLIP search, along with albums and shared albums. Its metadata view includes EXIF information and a map, and the project lists RAW support. This is a broad set of ways to find files, but the documentation does not establish comparative recognition precision against PhotoPrism.

PhotoPrism’s filter-oriented catalog
PhotoPrism’s overview describes combined filters for labels, location, resolution, color, chroma and quality. It also lists automatic labeling, face recognition, metadata extraction, maps and secret-link album sharing. Secret links can have an expiration date and do not require the recipient to register, which can simplify sharing with people who should not receive an account.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Make a short list such as “RAW files from this camera,” “low-resolution landscape images,” “photos tagged with a particular person,” or “videos from a specific trip.” Reproduce those searches in a trial library rather than assuming a feature name guarantees the result you want.
Formats, metadata and migration safety
| Capability | Immich | PhotoPrism | Migration implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| RAW files | Listed in the project feature table | Listed on the feature page | Use representative files from each camera before importing the complete archive. |
| Common still and video formats | Exact exhaustive matrix not stated in the reviewed README | JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, HEIF, HEIC, MP4, MOV, WebP and WebM are listed | Check current documentation for uncommon codecs and camera variants. |
| Metadata and sidecars | Metadata view includes EXIF and map; an exhaustive sidecar matrix is not stated | Extraction and merging of Exif, XMP and Google Photos JSON are listed | Preserve originals and sidecars, then verify dates, locations, ratings and captions after indexing. |
Do not treat an import as a one-way conversion. Keep the original directory tree and sidecar files until you have verified a sample of photos, videos, RAW files and edited copies. Pay particular attention to files exported from a previous cloud library, where dates and album membership may be represented in JSON rather than embedded in the image.
Server requirements: check the machine before moving the archive
The numbers below are published baselines from each project, not a benchmark proving that one application is faster or more efficient.
| Requirement | Immich | PhotoPrism |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | At least 6 GB RAM; 8 GB recommended | 3 GB physical memory minimum |
| CPU | At least 2 CPU cores; 4 cores recommended | 2 CPU cores minimum |
| Operating system and architecture | Docker Compose deployment is required by the requirements page | 64-bit operating system; stable multi-architecture Docker images are documented |
| Swap | Not stated on the reviewed requirements page | At least 4 GB swap |
| Database | PostgreSQL database; typically 1–3 GB according to the requirements page | SQLite or MariaDB 10.5.12 or newer; SQLite is discouraged for scale and high performance |
| Recommended database storage | Local SSD for database files; a network share is not recommended | Exact storage medium recommendation not stated in the reviewed setup page |
Immich’s full requirements are in its requirements documentation. Its download page also lists Kubernetes and community NAS guides, but a guide’s existence does not guarantee that your NAS model, CPU architecture or operating system is supported. PhotoPrism recommends Docker and documents its setup requirements at PhotoPrism setup documentation.

What these requirements mean in practice
- Measure available RAM while other NAS services are running, not just the machine’s advertised total.
- Confirm whether your processor is 64-bit and whether the application image exists for its architecture.
- Leave room for the operating system, database, thumbnails, indexes and temporary processing files.
- Use local SSD-backed storage for Immich’s database where possible; keep bulk originals on storage sized for your archive and backup plan.
- If you choose PhotoPrism with SQLite, understand that its documentation discourages that choice for users who need scalability or high performance.
Storage planning: originals are only part of the footprint
Immich states that generated thumbnails and transcoded video increase library size by about 10–20% on average. Its requirements page also says the PostgreSQL database is typically 1–3 GB. Treat those figures as planning guidance, not a guarantee: a video-heavy library, many derivatives or repeated indexing can change the result.
Estimate capacity in four layers:
- Add the size of the original photos and videos.
- Reserve roughly 10–20% above that for Immich thumbnails and transcoded video when using Immich.
- Reserve database and indexing space, including the published 1–3 GB typical PostgreSQL figure for Immich.
- Add the capacity of an independent backup target; a second copy should not consume the only free space on the primary server.
For PhotoPrism, calculate the original archive, database, index and derivative space from your own trial because the reviewed feature and setup pages do not publish an equivalent universal percentage.
Backups and disaster recovery are separate from the app
Self-hosting protects you from depending on a vendor’s account, but it makes storage maintenance your responsibility. Immich’s project README states: “Always follow 3-2-1 backup plan for your precious photos and videos!” That means at least three copies, on two different media types, with one copy stored off-site.
Immich’s quick-start guidance warns that the database contains metadata and user information and that the image/video upload directory needs manual backup. Back up both: originals without the database may lose albums, users and metadata; a database without the originals cannot restore the files. Keep a copy outside the server and periodically perform a restore test.
The reviewed PhotoPrism material does not establish a complete disaster-recovery procedure. Apply the same principle there: protect originals, database/catalog data, configuration and any sidecars independently of the running application. RAID can improve availability, but it is not an off-site backup.

Deployment and operating costs
Immich
Immich’s requirements page calls for Docker Compose. The download page presents self-hosting installation routes, mobile apps, Kubernetes information and links to community NAS guides. The reviewed download material does not state a paid subscription price. “Self-hosted” still has costs for a server or NAS, drives, electricity, replacement hardware, backup storage and your time maintaining updates.
PhotoPrism
The PhotoPrism feature page currently lists Community as free, Essentials at €2 per month, Plus from €6 per month and PikaPods from $6.50 per month. These are the page’s listed membership or hosting prices as checked on 13 October 2026; tiers and prices can change, and hardware, electricity, backup storage and other hosting costs are separate. PhotoPrism’s setup information also names PikaPods and DigitalOcean as cloud availability options for people who do not want to operate a server themselves.
Compare the total operating model, not only a displayed software price. A paid managed option may reduce administration while adding a recurring bill; a home server may avoid that subscription while requiring maintenance and a recovery plan.
A decision framework by use case
Choose Immich first when phone backup is the main problem
- You want official Android and iOS apps rather than a separate backup product.
- You need selected-album backup, duplicate skipping and optional server-album mirroring.
- You can provide at least 6 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores, with 8 GB and 4 cores preferable.
- You are willing to manage Docker Compose, local database storage and independent backups.
Choose PhotoPrism first when catalog discovery is the main problem
- You spend more time searching and filtering an existing archive than capturing new phone photos.
- Labels, location, resolution, color, chroma, quality, maps and face recognition match your organization style.
- You want secret album links that can expire without requiring recipients to register.
- You are comfortable validating a separate phone-backup workflow such as PhotoSync.
Pause and test both when your archive is unusual
Use a copy of representative originals if you have RAW files, long videos, sidecars, exported cloud albums, multiple users or a constrained NAS. The official pages do not establish a universal winner for recognition accuracy, indexing speed or NAS reliability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to run a safe trial before migration
- Inventory the source. Record total bytes, file counts, camera formats, videos, sidecars, duplicate folders and the albums you actually use.
- Check the host. Confirm RAM, CPU cores, 64-bit architecture, available swap, Docker support, filesystem space and whether database storage can live on local SSD.
- Make a protected test copy. Do not experiment on the only copy of your originals. Include a representative phone album, RAW files, edited JPEGs, videos and files with XMP or Google Photos JSON.
- Deploy one application. Follow the current Immich or PhotoPrism documentation for your platform instead of copying an old NAS recipe. Keep the database and upload paths documented.
- Test the phone workflow. On Immich, select only the albums you intend to protect, verify Wi-Fi behavior, duplicate skipping and album mirroring, and check Background App Refresh on iOS. On PhotoPrism, test PhotoSync transfers while the phone is locked, on battery and away from home Wi-Fi.
- Test discovery. Search by dates, locations, labels, people, objects, file type and quality. Check whether the results match your real archive rather than a small demo set.
- Verify preservation. Open originals, inspect EXIF and sidecars, confirm video playback and check that dates, locations, captions and album relationships survived indexing.
- Practice recovery. Back up the originals and application data, remove a test item, and restore it. Record the paths and commands needed so recovery does not depend on memory.
- Only then import the full archive. Keep the source copy unchanged until you have completed a backup and restore cycle on the new system.
Common pitfalls and fixes
“My iPhone did not upload immediately.”
iOS controls background task timing. Keep Background App Refresh enabled, open the Immich app periodically during the initial upload, and verify that the phone has network and battery access. Immediate background execution is not a setting the app can force.

“The NAS meets the CPU minimum but indexing is unstable.”
Check memory available to the application, swap, database placement and competing NAS services. Published minimums describe a baseline configuration, not performance under your library’s workload. Reduce the test set, verify architecture and consult the current deployment guide for the platform.

“The server ran out of space after import.”
Account for thumbnails, transcoded video, indexes and database growth in addition to originals. Immich’s documented average increase is 10–20%, but your library may differ. Expand primary storage and backup capacity together rather than relying on a nearly full disk.
“I have RAID, so I skipped a backup.”
RAID is not the 3-2-1 plan recommended for precious media. Maintain an independent, preferably off-site copy and test that it can restore both files and catalog data.
