Choose native rendering when your handheld can hold the game’s target resolution and frame rate. If it cannot, test the game’s built-in FSR mode, then consider HelixSR only when your game, operating system, GPU and installation route are compatible. There is no evidence that one option is always the fastest or sharpest. A fair decision requires the same game, output resolution, graphics settings and frame-rate target, with attention to image stability, artifacts, frame pacing and total game performance—not just the time spent in an upscaling pass.
What you are actually choosing
These three choices operate at different levels:
- Native rendering draws the game at the target display resolution. It avoids an upscaling step, but its workload may be too high for a handheld at your preferred settings.
- FSR is AMD’s family of game-integrated reconstruction technologies. The game renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs an image for the display. In FSR 3 documentation, upscaling and frame generation are separate systems, so an option labelled FSR does not automatically mean that generated frames are enabled.
- HelixSR is an unofficial compatibility project that runs NVIDIA’s DLSS network on AMD GPUs through an FSR 3.1-compatible interface. It is not a new model trained for handhelds; the project describes it as NVIDIA’s network running on different hardware.
Because FSR is integrated by each game developer and HelixSR inserts a compatibility layer into a game’s existing upscaling path, names alone cannot predict quality. Correct jitter, motion data, post-processing order, reactive masks, transparency masks, composition masks and mip bias all affect the final FSR result. A well-integrated FSR implementation can look better than a poorly integrated alternative, regardless of the technology label.

Quick decision framework
- Set a target. Decide the display resolution you want to present, such as the handheld’s native panel resolution, and a practical frame-rate target such as a stable 30, 40 or 60 frames per second. Stability matters more than a brief peak.
- Test native rendering first. Use the game’s target output resolution and your intended graphics settings. If it sustains the target with acceptable frame pacing, native is your reference image.
- Enable the game’s own FSR mode. Record which FSR version and quality preset the game exposes. Keep frame generation separate from the upscaling comparison.
- Investigate HelixSR only if needed. Check the project’s current README, your game’s instructions, your operating system and your GPU before replacing files or adding a loader.
- Compare matched runs. Use the same scene, camera movement, output resolution, graphics settings, power profile and frame-rate cap. Examine motion and menus as well as a still image.
If native already meets your target, an upscaler has to offer a visible benefit—such as allowing higher settings or a steadier frame rate—to justify its additional complexity. If native misses the target, FSR is normally the first practical experiment because it is supported and configured by the game itself. HelixSR is a compatibility experiment, not a guaranteed upgrade.

Native rendering: the baseline
What it does
With native rendering, the game produces pixels at the selected output resolution instead of reconstructing them from a lower internal image. There is no separate reconstruction pass, and the game’s user interface and post-processing remain on the path designed by the developer.

When it is the right choice
- The handheld sustains your target frame rate in the demanding scenes you actually play.
- You value maximum fine detail and do not need the performance headroom that a lower internal resolution can provide.
- The game’s upscaling implementation shows distracting shimmer, ghosting or UI problems.
- You want the simplest configuration, with no DLL replacement, loader or compatibility layer.
What native does not guarantee
Native is not automatically faster, because the total workload depends on the game engine, effects, shadows, CPU load and other settings. It is also not a universal quality winner in every practical situation: a lower-resolution reconstruction can let you raise other settings or maintain a steadier frame rate, which may produce a better overall experience than an unstable native image. The useful test is whether native meets your target on your particular handheld.
FSR: the game-integrated option
Upscaling and frame generation are different
AMD’s FSR 3 integration material treats upscaling and frame generation as distinct parts of the system. Upscaling reconstructs a displayed frame from a lower-resolution render. Frame generation creates additional displayed frames between rendered frames and has its own integration and latency considerations. A game can expose one without the other, so read the exact labels in its graphics menu.
Why implementations differ
FSR quality depends on the data and timing supplied by the game engine. AMD’s integration guidance calls out the jitter pattern, placement of post-processing, reactive and transparency/composition masks, and mip bias. If those inputs are wrong or incomplete, you may see unstable foliage, shimmering edges, ghost trails, disocclusion errors or effects that are reconstructed incorrectly. Two games using the same FSR version can therefore look and perform differently.

- Open the game’s graphics or display menu and note the output resolution.
- Find the upscaling selector and record the exact technology and preset name. Do not assume that “quality” presets use the same internal resolution across games.
- Disable frame generation for the initial comparison, unless your goal specifically includes evaluating it.
- Use a repeatable scene with movement, transparent effects and a readable interface. Compare native and FSR without changing shadows, textures, lighting or the frame-rate cap.
- Check both average performance and frame-time consistency. A higher counter reading is not useful if camera movement feels uneven.
HelixSR: what it is and where it fits
Project scope
HelixSR presents an FSR 3.1-compatible interface so supported games on AMD hardware can use NVIDIA’s DLSS network. The project is unofficial. Its README identifies version 1.8.1 and says development and testing were done on an AMD BC-250 with Linux and Mesa RADV. The project explicitly says other GPUs and Windows were not tested by it. That documented scope is narrower than “works on gaming handhelds” and does not verify every handheld model, Linux distribution, Proton build or game.
Installation routes described by the project
- Direct FSR 3.1 DLL replacement: replace the game’s FSR 3.1 library with the HelixSR-compatible file when the title uses that interface.
- OptiScaler route: use the project with games that accept DLSS, XeSS or FSR 2 inputs, following the game-specific instructions.
- DLSS-loader method: the README labels this route experimental. Treat it as a troubleshooting path, not the default.
The README describes backups of replaced files and provides an uninstaller. Nevertheless, make your own backup and read the current instructions before changing a game directory. Updates can replace the files you installed, and an anti-cheat system or launcher may react differently to injected or replaced libraries. The project documentation, not a general compatibility promise, is the authority for each title.

What HelixSR cannot tell you
HelixSR’s published timing table covers the time of its upscaling pass on the project’s test configuration. It is not total game frame time, an FPS gain, or a head-to-head benchmark against FSR or native rendering. No broadly comparable independent benchmark across handhelds establishes a universal performance or image-quality winner.
Side-by-side comparison
| Decision factor | Native rendering | Game-integrated FSR | HelixSR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Inside the game’s normal renderer | Inside the game’s supported FSR integration | Compatibility layer presenting an FSR 3.1 interface to use the DLSS network on supported AMD hardware |
| Internal resolution | Target output resolution | Lower than output, selected by the game’s preset or scale | Depends on the game input and selected mode; not fixed by the project |
| Frame generation | Not included as a rendering method | May be offered separately in games with FSR 3 integration | Not established as a universal feature; check the specific game and route |
| Installation | No extra installation | Enable the game’s option | May require DLL replacement, OptiScaler or an experimental loader |
| Documented test scope | Depends on your device and game | Depends on the developer’s integration | Project reports AMD BC-250 with Linux/Mesa RADV; other GPUs and Windows were not tested by the project |
| Performance evidence | No general penalty established | No universal result; measure in the game | Published figures are upscaling-pass timings, not total game frame times |
| Primary risk | Missed frame-rate target or high power draw | Implementation artifacts or inadequate motion data | Game, GPU, OS, Proton and file-injection incompatibility |
How to run a fair comparison on a handheld
Prepare a repeatable test
- Use the same power mode, battery condition or charger state, fan profile and frame-rate cap for every run.
- Choose a demanding save location or benchmark sequence rather than an empty corridor.
- Keep output resolution, texture quality, shadows, reflections, anti-aliasing and post-processing unchanged.
- Allow shader compilation and shader caches to settle before recording observations.
- Capture the same camera movement at native, FSR and HelixSR settings.
Evaluate more than average FPS
Record frame-time consistency or 1% lows if your overlay provides them, but do not treat an overlay number as proof of image quality. Inspect fine geometry, foliage, hair, wires, fences and specular highlights while moving the camera. Look for shimmer that appears only in motion, ghosting behind characters, disocclusion trails, broken particles and text or HUD elements that are processed incorrectly. Check a dark scene and a bright, high-contrast scene because reconstruction errors can be easier to see in one than the other.

Compare the same displayed resolution. An upscaler’s internal resolution can change with its preset, and dynamic resolution may change it during play. Note whether the game uses a fixed scale or a dynamic target. Do not call an upscaling-pass time a complete frame time: the CPU, geometry, lighting, post-processing, display synchronization and frame-generation work remain outside that number.
Choosing by situation
The game already reaches your target natively
Stay native unless testing shows that an upscaler lets you raise another setting or improves frame-time stability without unacceptable artifacts. Native is also the easiest fallback when an update breaks an injected solution.
The game is close to the target but dips in heavy scenes
Try the game’s FSR quality mode first. A modest reduction in internal resolution may provide the headroom needed for steadier frame times. Test the worst scene, not only the opening area, and keep a frame cap that the device can hold consistently.

The game supports FSR but its image is unacceptable
Check for a different FSR preset, a render-scale control or a game update before moving to HelixSR. If you still test HelixSR, compare it against the same FSR input and output settings and keep the original files available for rollback. A sharper still image is not enough if motion stability, UI handling or frame pacing becomes worse.
The game has DLSS, XeSS or FSR 2 but no suitable FSR 3.1 path
This is the type of case in which the project’s OptiScaler route may be relevant, provided the game-specific instructions list your configuration. Compatibility is title-specific; the existence of an input option does not establish that HelixSR will work.
You use Windows or an unlisted GPU
Do not treat the project’s Linux/BC-250 testing as validation for your system. The project says Windows and other GPUs were not tested. You may experiment only after checking current compatibility notes and accepting that troubleshooting and rollback are your responsibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.HelixSR installation precautions and rollback
- Read the current HelixSR README and the instructions for your exact game before downloading or replacing anything.
- Confirm the game’s renderer, upscaler input, operating system, GPU driver and launcher/Proton environment match a documented route.
- Back up every original library in a separate location and record the file names and paths.
- Apply only the route required by the game: direct FSR 3.1 replacement, OptiScaler, or the experimental loader when explicitly instructed.
- Launch with overlays and frame counters available, then test a known scene for crashes, missing effects, broken menus and unstable frame pacing.
- If the game fails, restore the original files or use the project’s uninstaller, then verify the game files through the launcher before testing native or built-in FSR again.
Never infer that a successful launch means the replacement is functioning correctly. The game may silently fall back to another path, or it may render while producing artifacts that are visible only during movement.
Common mistakes
Comparing different presets
Native at low settings versus FSR at high settings is not a technology comparison. Lock the settings first, then vary only the rendering method and its clearly documented scale.

Confusing frame generation with upscaling
Frame generation can increase displayed frame counts while leaving the underlying rendered-frame workload and input latency characteristics different. Evaluate it as a separate feature after you understand the base upscaling result.
Using a still screenshot as the verdict
Temporal artifacts often appear only when the camera or objects move. Include motion, particles, transparency and interface text in your inspection.
Reading an upscaling timer as an FPS promise
A pass timer excludes much of the game frame. HelixSR’s published timings therefore cannot be converted into a guaranteed whole-game FPS gain.
Assuming every handheld is covered
Handhelds differ in GPU architecture, driver stack, operating system, display resolution and power limits. HelixSR’s documented BC-250/Linux/Mesa RADV test does not establish support for every other device.

A practical recommendation
Use native rendering as the reference and keep it when it meets your target. Use the game’s own FSR when native misses that target and the integrated result is clean enough. Treat HelixSR as an optional, title-specific experiment for compatible AMD/Linux setups, with backups and a rollback plan. Make the final choice from repeatable observations on your handheld: stable frame times, acceptable motion quality, clean UI rendering and a configuration you can maintain after game and driver updates.
