Choose by match format first, then verify your PC. Pick VALORANT if you want structured 5v5 tactical rounds, one life per round, and character abilities. Pick Counter-Strike 2 if objective-focused competitive play is the priority and you are comfortable with its free-tier limit: Premier requires Prime Status. Pick Apex Legends if you want squad-based hero-shooter action built around a battle-royale format. Your available storage, operating system, memory, graphics hardware and desired frame rate can rule out an otherwise attractive choice.
All three let you start without buying the base game. That does not mean every mode, status, cosmetic item or virtual currency is free. Treat the decision as two separate questions: Which kind of match will I enjoy? and What does my PC support?

Start with the match you actually want to play
The phrase “free PC shooter” covers very different experiences. Before looking at graphics cards or download sizes, decide how you want a match to feel. The three options covered here occupy distinct lanes rather than being interchangeable versions of the same game.

This table is a format guide, not a ranking. There is no evidence here that one game has the best balance, easiest learning curve, largest community or highest performance. Those claims would require current, comparable testing. Use the distinctions above to narrow the field, then apply the hardware and free-tier checks below.

Choose VALORANT for round-by-round tactics
Riot describes VALORANT as “A 5v5 tactical shooter featuring agents with unique abilities.” Its official overview lists Competitive, Unranked, Deathmatch and Spike Rush among its modes. The attack-and-defend structure gives players 13 rounds to work through, with one life per round. That combination makes every round a discrete decision: coordinate an attack or defense, use an agent ability at the right moment, and protect the value of a single life.
This is the most suitable choice of the three when you specifically want a round-based tactical format and consider character abilities part of the appeal. It is less suitable if your main expectation is a battle royale or a continuously respawning objective match.
Choose Counter-Strike 2 for objective-focused competition
Steam presents Counter-Strike 2 as free to play and centers its description on classic objective-focused gameplay. That makes it the clearest match for readers who want competitive rounds organized around objectives rather than a hero roster or battle-royale survival.

There is an important boundary inside the free offer. Steam Support states that free players can use all modes and matchmaking types except Premier; Premier requires Prime Status. If Premier is the reason you are considering the game, check that requirement before downloading. “Free to play” describes access to the base game, not unrestricted access to every competitive queue.
Choose Apex Legends for squad battle royale
Steam describes Apex Legends around strategic squad play, characters with abilities and battle royale. EA offers it free on PC through the EA app and Steam, with optional in-game purchases. Choose it when you want a squad to survive and fight through a changing match rather than reset after every short tactical round.

- The durable, compact design with built-in nano receiver storage makes G305 not just a great portable desktop mouse, but also a great laptop travel companion, use with a gaming laptop and play anywhere
The squad and battle-royale structure is the decisive difference here. It also means that a player looking for a traditional objective shooter may prefer one of the other two, even if the hardware requirements overlap.
Compare the free access and paid boundaries
Separate the downloadable base game from the features or items that can involve payment. The documented boundaries differ:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- VALORANT: The supplied official material identifies its modes and PC requirements but does not establish a specific paid-status gate. Do not assume that every future mode, item or service will remain unchanged; check Riot’s current terms for your region.
- Counter-Strike 2: The base game is listed as free to play. Steam Support specifically excludes Premier from the free tier and says Prime Status is required.
- Apex Legends: EA says the PC game is free to download and play, while optional in-game purchases and virtual currency are available.
Do not turn these facts into a universal cost ranking. Prime Status terms, virtual-currency pricing, taxes and regional availability can change. If you need a complete cost before committing, inspect the current store and account pages for your country. The practical question is whether you are willing to play within the free queues and content, not whether a store page contains a “free” label.
Check your PC before installing
Minimum requirements are compatibility thresholds, not promises of a steady frame rate on every machine. Compare your CPU, graphics card, RAM, operating system, free storage and target frame rate with the published figures. A component that barely meets a minimum can still produce an unsatisfactory experience if background applications, thermal limits or higher settings consume the remaining headroom.
| Game and source | Operating system and processor | Memory and graphics | Free storage | Published performance context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VALORANT — Riot Games Player Support, page dated May 21, 2026 | Windows 10, build 19041 or newer, or Windows 11 64-bit; DirectX 11; SSE 4.2 or AVX support | 4 GB RAM minimum; Riot publishes minimum, recommended and high-end tiers rather than a single universal performance promise | The cited requirements do not provide a storage figure | Minimum tier targeted at 30 FPS; recommended tier at 60 FPS; high-end tier at 144 FPS |
| Counter-Strike 2 — Steam listing accessed in 2026 | Windows 10; four hardware CPU threads, Intel Core i5-750 or higher; Ubuntu 20.04 minimum requirements are also listed | 8 GB RAM; DirectX 11-compatible GPU with Shader Model 5.0 and at least 1 GB of graphics memory | 85 GB for the Windows installation | The listing gives minimum requirements, not a guaranteed frame-rate tier |
| Apex Legends — EA PC requirements accessed in 2026 | 64-bit Windows 10; minimum Intel Core i3-6300 or AMD FX-4350; recommended Intel i5-3570K or equivalent | Minimum 6 GB RAM; GTX 950 or Radeon HD 7790 with feature level 12_0 and 2 GB GPU RAM. Recommended 8 GB RAM and GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290 | 75 GB minimum and 75 GB in the recommended configuration | EA describes the recommended configuration as suitable for smooth 60 FPS play |
These are the publishers’ and store’s stated requirements, not independent benchmarks. Riot’s “30 FPS,” “60 FPS” and “144 FPS” labels are requirement tiers; EA’s smooth-60-FPS wording describes its recommended configuration. Actual results depend on resolution, graphics settings, drivers, cooling and the rest of the system.

VALORANT-specific Windows 11 checks
On Windows 11, Riot additionally requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot. A PC can have enough memory and a suitable processor yet fail to launch if those firmware and security features are disabled. Check them before troubleshooting the game itself.

Storage is a practical filter
CS2’s listed 85 GB Windows requirement and Apex’s 75 GB requirement can matter more than a small difference in processor age. Leave additional room for updates, shader caches, the operating system and other games; the listed number is the stated free-space requirement, not a recommendation to fill a drive to its last gigabyte. Riot’s cited VALORANT page does not provide a storage figure, so do not invent one or assume that its smaller memory requirement means a particular download size.
Use this decision sequence
Follow the questions in order. Stop when one answer clearly determines the choice, then verify the installation requirements.
- Choose the match shape. Select tactical attack-and-defend rounds for VALORANT, classic objective-focused competition for CS2, or squad battle royale for Apex Legends.
- Check the mode you consider essential. If you choose CS2 because you want Premier, include Prime Status in the plan; it is not in the free tier according to Steam Support. If Premier is not essential, the free modes and matchmaking types described by Steam remain available.
- Write down your PC specification. Record the exact CPU, graphics card, installed RAM, Windows or Linux version, free storage and the frame rate you want. “Gaming PC” is not precise enough for a reliable match.
- Compare the limiting component. Check operating-system rules first, then processor, memory, graphics feature level and storage. For VALORANT on Windows 11, check TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot as well.
- Reserve disk space. Ensure the drive has the published requirement plus working room for updates and normal operating-system use. Do not start a large download if the installer will leave the system nearly full.
- Decide how much optional spending is acceptable. Apex’s purchases are optional; CS2’s Premier access is a paid-status boundary. Recheck current regional terms instead of relying on an old price or a different country’s store.
- Install one candidate first. Trying a single match format lets you evaluate input comfort, frame pacing and team expectations before committing storage to all three.
Match the choice to your PC and target frame rate
If your computer is modest
VALORANT has the lowest published memory minimum in this comparison at 4 GB and explicitly provides a 30-FPS minimum tier. That makes it the first requirements page to inspect for a low-memory system, but it is not proof that every old PC will run it well. You still need the supported 64-bit Windows version, DirectX 11 and the listed instruction-set support, plus the Windows 11 security requirements when applicable.

Apex’s minimum calls for 6 GB of RAM, a specified class of graphics card with feature level 12_0 and 2 GB of GPU memory, while CS2 lists 8 GB of RAM and a DirectX 11 GPU with Shader Model 5.0 and at least 1 GB. Compare your actual graphics hardware rather than choosing solely from the RAM figures.
If you want 60 FPS or higher
Use the target tiers where they are published. Riot lists 60 FPS as VALORANT’s recommended tier and 144 FPS as its high-end tier. EA’s recommended Apex configuration is described as smooth 60 FPS. Steam’s CS2 listing does not provide a comparable FPS target, so treat its requirements as a compatibility floor and test your own settings.
Resolution and quality settings change the load substantially. A monitor capable of 144 Hz does not make a game run at 144 FPS; the high-end tier is a requirement category, not a guarantee for every scene or system configuration.
If storage is tight
Start with the game whose published space requirement fits without deleting essential files. CS2’s 85 GB listing is the largest stated requirement here, followed by Apex at 75 GB. Because updates can need temporary working space, avoid planning around exactly the displayed minimum. The cited VALORANT requirements do not state a storage number, so check the current installer or official page before reserving space.
Team size, solo play and expectations
Team preference is useful, but the available official descriptions do not establish that any of these games is objectively best for solo players, duos or squads. VALORANT is explicitly 5v5, and Apex is described as squad-based; those facts tell you the intended team structure, not how enjoyable solo queue will be for a particular person. CS2’s description emphasizes objective-focused competition without providing a universal solo-versus-team verdict.

- Play Longer : With 60-90 hours battery life and LIGHTSPEED Wireless, this rechargeable gaming mouse(with included USB-A to USB-C cable) delivers lag-free 8 kHz polling for uninterrupted focus
Choose based on the team structure you are willing to learn. If you dislike coordinating around a fixed round and one life, VALORANT’s format may feel restrictive. If you do not want a battle-royale match with a squad, Apex may be a poor fit even if your hardware passes. If you want objective competition without a hero-ability focus, CS2 is the closest match in this shortlist.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“Free” is treated as “everything is unlocked”
Free base access and unrestricted features are different claims. The clearest documented example is CS2 Premier: Steam Support places it behind Prime Status. Apex’s free download also coexists with optional virtual-currency purchases. Read the mode and account requirements for the feature you actually want.
A minimum requirement is mistaken for a performance guarantee
Minimum specifications identify a supported starting point. They do not promise stable frame pacing, a specific resolution or a particular refresh-rate experience. Use the recommended or high-end tier when one is available, and leave headroom for background software and updates.
Only RAM is compared
Memory is one part of the check. Apex’s listed graphics feature level and GPU-memory requirement, CS2’s Shader Model 5.0 requirement, and VALORANT’s DirectX and CPU instruction-set requirements can each be decisive. Compare every listed component.
Windows 11 security settings are ignored
For VALORANT, TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot are additional Windows 11 requirements. If the game fails to launch on an otherwise capable PC, verify those firmware settings before replacing hardware.
Old community anecdotes are used as current specifications
Modes, storage demands, operating-system support and purchasing rules change. The figures in this guide come from official pages checked in October 2026, but you should still open the current game or support page immediately before installation.
A practical first-session checklist
- Confirm the game’s official operating-system requirement against your installed version.
- Check CPU model, GPU model, RAM and available storage in system settings.
- For Windows 11 VALORANT installations, verify TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot.
- Close unnecessary applications before the first launch so initial performance is easier to judge.
- Begin with conservative graphics settings, then raise quality while watching frame consistency rather than chasing a single peak number.
- Confirm that the mode you want is included in the free tier, especially Premier in CS2.
- For Apex, remember that optional virtual-currency purchases are not required to describe the base game as free.
- If the PC misses a requirement, compare a complete upgrade path only after identifying the exact failing component; do not buy a graphics card based on RAM alone.
The short recommendation
For structured tactical rounds, choose VALORANT and verify the Windows 11 security requirements if relevant. For objective-focused competitive play, choose Counter-Strike 2, but decide up front whether Premier and its Prime Status requirement matter. For squad-based hero-shooter battle royale, choose Apex Legends and plan around its larger installation and published graphics requirements. If two formats appeal equally, let your PC’s weakest required component and your available storage break the tie.
