Use matrix-product-state (MPS) methods, especially density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG), for ground states of longer one-dimensional chains and bulk-limit questions when the state remains accurately representable at a practical bond dimension. For real-time evolution, use a tensor-network evolution method such as TEBD, while checking both time-step and truncation errors. There is no universal chain-length crossover: local spin dimension, symmetries, boundary conditions, target states, observables, interactions, implementation and hardware all change the answer.
What each method actually computes
Exact diagonalization solves a finite Hamiltonian
For a spin-1/2 chain with L sites, the unstructured Hilbert-space dimension is 2^L. That scaling is mathematical, not a benchmark: memory and runtime depend on the Hamiltonian, the symmetry sector retained, the eigensolver, the number of eigenpairs requested and the machine. The exponential growth is nevertheless the central ED constraint. ITensor’s DMRG documentation gives the same 2^L scaling when explaining why a full many-body calculation becomes difficult.

ED constructs the finite-system Hamiltonian as a dense or sparse matrix and solves for all or part of its spectrum. You can exploit conserved quantities such as total magnetization, momentum or parity to work in smaller blocks. Sparse iterative eigensolvers are useful when only a few eigenvalues or eigenvectors are needed; they do not remove the exponential growth, but they avoid storing and diagonalizing an unnecessary full matrix.
Within the selected finite Hilbert-space sector, ED is exact up to floating-point and solver tolerances. It gives direct access to the complete spectrum, degeneracies, eigenvectors, gaps, matrix elements and finite-temperature quantities formed from the eigenvalues. That makes it the reference calculation for checking signs, boundary terms, symmetry labels and tensor-network implementations on small systems. A finite ED result is not automatically a thermodynamic-limit result: changing L, boundary conditions or the sector changes the physical problem.

DMRG searches in an MPS manifold
DMRG writes the many-body wavefunction as a matrix-product state. Instead of optimizing every coefficient in an exponentially large vector at once, it optimizes one site or a small local block while the rest of the chain is compressed into effective environments. Each local step solves a reduced eigenproblem, then a singular-value decomposition (SVD) truncates the bond between sites. The retained number of singular vectors is the bond dimension, commonly denoted m or D.
This is an approximation controlled in practice by bond dimension, truncation cutoff, sweep schedule and convergence diagnostics. The representation can be extremely efficient when entanglement across a cut is modest, but a low-energy number alone does not certify every observable. Increase the resources and check the quantity you intend to publish: energy, local order parameters, correlations, entanglement entropy, gaps or response functions can converge at different rates.
ITensor describes DMRG as replacing a full exponentially growing problem with reduced local eigenproblems. Its practical advantage is therefore not that the Hamiltonian has stopped being large, but that the relevant state can be represented with far fewer parameters than an unrestricted vector.

Match the method to the scientific question
| Question | Preferred starting point | Reason and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Complete spectrum of a small finite chain | ED | Directly returns all finite-system eigenvalues and eigenvectors if the chosen sector fits in memory. |
| Several selected low-energy states on a modest chain | ED first; DMRG alternatives | ED supplies a clean benchmark. DMRG can target excited states, but state targeting and orthogonality require additional checks. |
| Ground state of a long open chain | Finite-system DMRG | Strong candidate when the ground state is compressible as an MPS; verify convergence with bond dimension and truncation. |
| Translation-invariant bulk ground state | Infinite DMRG (iDMRG) | Works with a repeated unit cell, but the cell must allow the actual ground-state periodicity. |
| Real-time dynamics | TEBD or another MPS evolution method | Control Trotter time-step error and SVD truncation error; accessible time depends on entanglement growth. |
| Critical correlations or highly entangled states | Either, with stronger validation | ED may be limited to short chains; MPS may require rapidly increasing bond dimension and careful long-distance checks. |
Finite-size spectra and benchmarks: choose ED
Start with ED when the finite chain is the scientific object: a gap at a specified length, a complete level statistic, a degeneracy pattern, a quench spectrum, or a benchmark for a new code. Use the smallest symmetry-resolved basis that still contains the states of interest. Record the boundary condition and quantum-number sector; comparing an ED result in one sector with an MPS result in another can look like a numerical disagreement when it is simply a different problem.
ED is also the fastest way to test a Hamiltonian implementation. Construct a two-, four- or six-site matrix analytically, including every boundary and sign convention, and compare it with the program’s matrix. Test a known product state or conserved quantity. Once the tensor-network code reproduces energies and observables on these sizes, increase system size and begin systematic convergence studies.
Long-chain ground states: choose DMRG when the state is compressible
For a one-dimensional ground state with limited entanglement, DMRG normally reaches lengths that are inaccessible to ED. Open boundaries are especially convenient for finite-system sweeps because the MPS has a natural left-to-right and right-to-left optimization path. The method is variational: with a sufficiently expressive MPS, the calculated ground-state energy approaches the exact variational minimum from above, but a plausible energy is not proof that the state is converged.

Increase the maximum bond dimension in stages and monitor the target observables. Also inspect discarded weight or truncation error, energy changes between sweeps, entanglement entropy and any symmetry-breaking order parameter. A local quantity may appear stable while a correlation length or a small excitation gap is still drifting.
Bulk and translation-invariant states: use iDMRG carefully
Infinite DMRG represents a repeating unit cell rather than a chain with two ends. It is useful for bulk energy density, order parameters and correlation lengths without extrapolating a sequence of finite lengths. The unit cell is a physical assumption: if the true ground state doubles, quadruples or otherwise enlarges the period, a cell that is too small can enforce a false periodicity and exclude the state you want.
When the periodicity is uncertain, repeat the calculation with several cell sizes and compare energies and observables. Report the chosen cell and its sensitivity. A lower-energy result in a larger cell is evidence that the smaller cell was restrictive, not merely that the optimizer was noisier.
Dynamics: TEBD adds two independent error sources
For nearest-neighbor chains, time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) splits the Hamiltonian into commuting even and odd bonds and applies local two-site gates. A Trotter-Suzuki factorization approximates the exponential time-evolution operator. TensorNetwork.org’s TEBD explanation describes this gate decomposition and the associated approximation.
Reduce the time step and compare results to estimate Trotter error. Separately, raise the bond-dimension limit or tighten the SVD cutoff to estimate truncation error. These errors can compensate accidentally at one time, so vary them independently. Long-range interactions, long evolution times and rapidly growing entanglement can make TEBD inefficient; the appropriate alternative depends on interaction structure and the observable’s required accuracy.

Local spin dimension matters
The 2^L expression applies to spin-1/2 sites without additional restrictions. A local spin-S site has dimension d=2S+1, so an unrestricted chain has dimension d^L. Higher-spin models therefore reach the ED limit at shorter lengths, while their entanglement structure may still be manageable for an MPS. State the local dimension whenever reporting a size comparison.

Symmetry sectors can make ED practical
Conservation laws divide the Hilbert space into blocks. Working in a fixed magnetization or other exact quantum-number sector can reduce memory dramatically and prevents the solver from returning irrelevant states. The reduction is model- and sector-dependent; it does not create a universal ED length threshold. MPS libraries can exploit the same symmetries with block-sparse tensors, lowering cost and often improving numerical stability.
For a fair comparison, impose equivalent symmetries in both methods. An ED calculation in a fixed total-spin sector should be compared with an MPS calculation constrained to that sector, or with an unconstrained MPS only after checking that it selected the same quantum numbers.
Boundary conditions and target observables are decisive
Periodic boundaries usually increase MPS cost because the tensor network has a loop, whereas ED handles periodic terms naturally in the finite matrix. Conversely, open-chain DMRG is often particularly efficient. Boundary effects can dominate edge magnetization, local density and correlation measurements; bulk observables should be taken away from the ends or extrapolated with a stated procedure.
A full spectrum, level statistics or high-temperature partition function favors ED when feasible. A single ground-state energy or local expectation value may be ideal for DMRG. A long-distance correlator, small gap or entanglement spectrum deserves stricter convergence than a bulk energy density because it can be sensitive to the discarded tail of the MPS.
A practical decision procedure
- Define the output. Write down whether you need the full finite-size spectrum, selected eigenpairs, a ground state, a bulk energy density, a correlation function or a time-dependent observable. Include the chain length, local spin, boundary condition and symmetry sector.
- Estimate the ED basis. Calculate the unrestricted dimension
d^L, then estimate the dimension of the symmetry block you would actually use. If storing the matrix, vectors and solver workspace exceeds available memory, do not treat ED as the primary production method. Sparse iterative ED can still be viable for a few eigenpairs when matrix-vector products are cheap. - Test an MPS representation. Run a small DMRG calculation with a modest bond dimension and a short sweep schedule. A low-cost trial reveals whether the model, MPO and symmetries are implemented correctly before a long run consumes resources.
- Cross-check overlapping sizes. Solve the same small chains with ED and DMRG. Compare energies in the same sector and boundary condition, then compare the observables you will report. Agreement at one size is a check, not a proof of convergence at larger sizes.
- Scale one control at a time. Increase chain length while holding DMRG settings fixed to see finite-size behavior; then increase maximum bond dimension and tighten truncation independently to see representation error. For TEBD, vary time step and truncation separately.
- Choose the production method. Retain ED for quantities that require the finite spectrum or for sizes where it remains affordable. Retain DMRG or iDMRG when observables are converged and the MPS bond dimension remains practical. Use TEBD only after its two error controls are documented.
A defensible DMRG workflow
1. Verify the Hamiltonian and MPO
Before tuning performance, verify that the tensor-network representation is the intended model. TeNPy’s DMRG protocol recommends contracting a small MPO into an ordinary matrix and comparing it with an analytical Hamiltonian, or testing known eigenstates where available. Check coupling signs, site ordering, boundary terms, field conventions and every conserved quantum number.
2. Run a low-cost pilot
Use a small chain, modest maximum bond dimension and limited interaction range where the physics permits. Confirm that the energy decreases or stabilizes across sweeps, that the state has the expected quantum numbers and that observables have sensible symmetries. Abort a pilot that is clearly optimizing the wrong Hamiltonian; more sweeps cannot repair an incorrect MPO.

3. Increase bond dimension and tighten truncation
Raise maxm in stages rather than jumping directly to a large value. Tighten the singular-value cutoff at the same time only when you can afford to separate the effects in a later test. ITensor’s parameter guide identifies sweep count, maximum bond dimension and truncation cutoff as basic DMRG controls.
That guide gives examples rather than universal prescriptions: an easy-to-converge one-dimensional spin chain may produce excellent results in four or five sweeps, and an example for the spin-1 Heisenberg chain reports bond dimension m=200 as quite good. Treat those as tutorial heuristics, not guarantees for a different Hamiltonian, observable or error target. It also illustrates cutoffs such as 1E-8; the appropriate value depends on the discarded spectrum and the precision you need.
4. Check the observables, not only the energy
For each production result, record energy change per sweep, maximum and typical bond dimension, truncation or discarded weight, and the numerical value of every reported observable. Increase maxm until the observable changes less than your stated tolerance. If the energy is stable but correlations drift, the calculation is not converged for that correlation measurement.
5. Investigate warning signs
- Termination at the sweep limit: increase the allowed sweeps or improve the initial state; do not label the result converged merely because the program stopped.
- Oscillating energy or entropy: inspect the sweep schedule, local eigensolver tolerance, truncation cutoff and initial state. A stuck optimizer can require a different noise schedule or a larger bond dimension.
- Large changes from tiny parameter variations: check near-degeneracies, symmetry sectors, finite-size effects and whether the calculation is selecting different broken-symmetry states.
- Unexpected periodicity: enlarge the iDMRG unit cell and compare energies. A restricted cell can forbid the true state.
- Stable energy but wrong long-distance physics: increase bond dimension and examine correlation functions, correlation length and entanglement, especially near a critical point.
Why critical systems require extra caution
MPS efficiency is tied to entanglement structure. Gapped one-dimensional ground states often satisfy an area-law pattern that permits compact representations, but critical systems can require substantially larger bond dimensions as the desired correlation length grows. TeNPy warns that critical states challenge the area-law premise behind an accurate MPS approximation.
At criticality, a visually convincing energy curve can conceal errors in algebraically decaying correlations, central-charge estimates, entanglement entropy or a small gap. Compare multiple bond dimensions, plot observables against discarded weight or inverse bond dimension, and state the finite-size or finite-entanglement extrapolation used. If the required bond dimension grows beyond available memory, a shorter ED benchmark may be more reliable for the specific quantity than an apparently converged but under-resolved MPS.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using chain length as the only rule: replace a guessed crossover with a target-based decision. A short chain needing every eigenstate favors ED; a longer chain needing one compressible ground state favors DMRG.
- Calling DMRG exact: describe it as variational and report bond dimension, truncation and observable convergence. ED is exact only for the stated finite sector and numerical precision.
- Comparing different problems: match local spin, couplings, boundaries, system length, quantum-number sector and normalization before comparing energies.
- Checking energy alone: test the observables that support the paper’s conclusion, including long-distance quantities when relevant.
- Assuming a default unit cell: test larger cells in iDMRG whenever broken translation symmetry or competing periods are possible.
- Confusing Trotter and truncation errors: vary TEBD time step and bond-dimension cutoff in separate runs.
- Reporting a tutorial setting as a guarantee: four or five sweeps,
m=200and a1E-8cutoff are examples for particular easy cases, not universal prescriptions.
A reporting checklist for reproducible results
State the Hamiltonian convention, local spin dimension, chain length or unit-cell size, boundary condition, symmetry sector, initial state, software and version, eigensolver or local optimizer, maximum bond dimension, truncation cutoff, number of sweeps or time step, and convergence criterion. Give the observable-specific change under the final resource increase. For ED, state whether the matrix was dense or sparse, which eigenpairs were requested and how the symmetry block was selected. For iDMRG, state the unit cell and results from alternative cells when periodicity was uncertain. For TEBD, report both time-step and truncation checks.
The decision in one sentence
Choose ED for finite-system completeness and an auditable small-size reference; choose DMRG or iDMRG for converged ground-state and bulk calculations whose entanglement fits an MPS; choose TEBD for dynamics only after independently controlling Trotter and truncation errors. When both are feasible, let ED validate the small systems and let tensor networks carry the calculation to the sizes or times that answer the physical question.
