How to Choose Between Ethernet and InfiniBand for an AI Training Cluster

For an AI training cluster, choose between a deliberately engineered Ethernet fabric carrying RoCE and a native InfiniBand fabric by measuring your workload, scale, congestion requirements, operational capability and complete system cost. Ordinary TCP/IP Ethernet is not an apples-to-apples alternative to InfiniBand for GPU collectives. There is no universal performance or price winner across hardware generations and topologies.

Start by separating scale-up traffic inside a server or rack from scale-out traffic between training nodes. Then benchmark the exact proposed fabric, switches, NICs, software stack and collective patterns. A hybrid design is also valid: one fabric can carry GPU compute traffic while another handles storage, management and external connectivity.

What you are actually choosing

Distributed training divides a model across multiple GPUs and servers. The GPUs repeatedly exchange gradients, activations, parameters and synchronization messages through collective operations such as AllReduce. The network connecting those servers is the cluster’s scale-out fabric. Its behavior directly affects how long each training step waits for the slowest participant.

That fabric is different from the scale-up interconnect used inside a node or rack. NVIDIA’s DGX GB networking guide describes NVLink as the in-rack scale-up fabric and InfiniBand as the inter-rack compute fabric in that platform. Your system may use a different division, but the distinction prevents a common design error: comparing a server’s internal link with its inter-node network.

In this article, “Ethernet” means Ethernet engineered for RDMA, normally RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet), unless stated otherwise. Conventional TCP/IP Ethernet can provide management, storage or user access, but it does not deliver the same data path or latency characteristics as an RDMA fabric.

How native InfiniBand and RoCE differ

Native InfiniBand

InfiniBand is a purpose-built fabric with native RDMA semantics, its own addressing and routing model, and dedicated fabric-management software. Host channel adapters, switches and links are designed together for high-throughput, low-latency message movement between application memories. The management model is separate from ordinary Ethernet control protocols, so the team must learn and operate that stack as part of the cluster.

InfiniBand is often attractive when predictable collective performance is the primary requirement and the organization already has InfiniBand design and troubleshooting expertise. It still requires careful topology, firmware, routing, cable and software planning; a dedicated fabric is not automatically well tuned.

Ethernet carrying RoCE

RoCE uses Ethernet links and switches to carry RDMA. In the data path, hardware can move data between application memories without copying through the host CPU; transport processing and memory translation or placement are handled by the NIC. NVIDIA’s RoCE and Ethernet networking guide explains that Ethernet’s MAC and standard Ethernet management replace the corresponding InfiniBand elements while preserving RDMA-style movement.

RoCE therefore combines RDMA-capable NICs and software with Ethernet switching and Ethernet operations. It is not enough to buy fast Ethernet ports and enable a driver. The design must specify the RoCE version, routing, priority handling, congestion control, queue configuration, firmware and monitoring supported by the selected switch and NIC releases.

RoCE implementations also differ operationally. A link-layer, non-routed design and a Layer 3 routed design have different failure domains and congestion mechanisms. Treat the exact switch, NIC, driver and software release as part of the product, rather than assuming that every “RoCE” network behaves identically.

Compare the two fabrics on the dimensions that affect training

Decision dimension Questions to answer Why it matters
Communication pattern Which collectives dominate? How much traffic crosses nodes? Are messages synchronized bursts or steady streams? A fabric that looks excellent for one collective or message size may perform differently for another.
Cluster scale How many nodes and accelerators will run together now and at the planned maximum? Switch tiers, routes, oversubscription and failure domains change as the system grows. No universal node-count threshold selects one fabric.
Throughput and latency behavior What bandwidth is required, and what average and tail latency can the training job tolerate? Training often waits on stragglers. Tail behavior under congestion can matter more than an unloaded link-rate figure.
Congestion engineering How will the design detect and control queue buildup, packet loss and priority interference? RoCE relies on a correctly configured Ethernet congestion and loss-management design; InfiniBand has its own controls and operational model.
Operations Can the team provision, monitor, upgrade and troubleshoot the complete fabric and its collective-library integration? Staff time, incident response and maintenance are part of the real cost.
Traffic separation Will compute, storage, management and external traffic share links or use separate fabrics? Convergence can reduce hardware but increases isolation and congestion-design requirements.
Physical topology What are the switch tiers, rack locations, routes, link widths, connector types and cable lengths? Physical choices affect signal integrity, reach, serviceability and expansion capacity.
Total cost What is the complete bill of materials, support model, power use, optics or cables, spares and staffing? Current market-wide prices and a universal cost winner are not established; compare quotations for identical requirements.

A step-by-step selection method

1. Describe the training workload before selecting hardware

  1. List the models and parallelism modes. Record data, tensor, pipeline and expert parallelism, because each changes the volume and timing of inter-node communication.
  2. Measure collective traffic. Capture AllReduce, AllGather, ReduceScatter and point-to-point traffic by message size and frequency. Include checkpointing and evaluation phases, not only the busiest training loop.
  3. Define the growth envelope. State the number of nodes and accelerators for the first deployment and the largest cluster you expect to operate. Include planned failure and maintenance scenarios.
  4. Set acceptance criteria. Specify useful training throughput, maximum step-time variance, acceptable collective latency tails and the recovery time for a failed link or switch.

Do not select a fabric from a vendor demonstration that uses a different accelerator generation, topology, collective-library version or message mix. Record those variables with every result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Decide whether the network is dedicated or converged

A dedicated compute fabric isolates GPU collectives from storage and user traffic. A converged design can share Ethernet infrastructure, but only when priorities, queues, routing, buffers and monitoring are engineered for the combined load.

NVIDIA’s DGX GB example uses InfiniBand for scale-out compute while Ethernet carries storage, management and external connectivity. That is an architecture example, not a requirement. A different organization may use RoCE for compute and separate or shared Ethernet for the other classes.

3. Choose the fabric your team can operate reliably

Inventory the skills available for switch configuration, RDMA host setup, firmware management, telemetry, capacity planning and incident response. Include the collective library, kernel, NIC driver and orchestration layer in the support plan. A theoretical performance advantage is irrelevant if the team cannot diagnose a degraded route or a rising queue.

RoCE can fit organizations with strong Ethernet automation and Layer 3 operations, but it adds RDMA-specific congestion and lossless-fabric work. InfiniBand reduces the number of Ethernet-specific controls in the compute path, while requiring InfiniBand-specific management and expertise. Evaluate training, on-call coverage and vendor escalation paths rather than treating either option as maintenance-free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Design the topology and failure domains

  1. Draw the rack layout, leaf and spine or equivalent tiers, accelerator hosts, storage endpoints and management paths.
  2. Mark every oversubscribed link and calculate the expected traffic during synchronized collectives.
  3. Define how a failed NIC, cable, leaf, spine or route affects jobs and whether the scheduler can drain or restart affected nodes.
  4. Specify expansion ports and spare capacity for the largest planned cluster, not only the first rack.
  5. Validate that software topology discovery presents the physical paths correctly to the collective library.

InfiniBand and RoCE both depend on a coherent topology. A nominal port speed does not compensate for a blocked uplink, an unexpected oversubscription point or a placement policy that scatters communicating ranks across a weak path.

5. Benchmark the complete proposed system

Build a test slice with the intended accelerators, NICs, switches, firmware, drivers, collective library and orchestration settings. Run microbenchmarks for the expected message sizes, then run representative training jobs at the intended node count. Repeat tests while other approved traffic is active if the production design will be converged.

  • Record per-collective bandwidth and latency, not only an aggregate link number.
  • Capture median and tail latency, step-time variance and job-level samples-to-training-target.
  • Repeat after warm-up and during sustained load; transient results can hide buffer or thermal effects.
  • Document hardware generation, topology, software versions, rank placement, message sizes, baseline and measurement method.
  • Test a degraded path, a restarted node and a switch or link maintenance event.

There is no controlled, universal InfiniBand-versus-RoCE benchmark established for every cluster. A result is portable only when the receiving design matches the tested conditions closely.

RoCE congestion and lossless-fabric requirements

RoCE performance depends on the Ethernet fabric’s behavior under contention. Packet loss, queue buildup and poorly matched priorities can produce retransmissions, long latency tails or unstable throughput even when individual links report the expected rate.

NCCL’s networking troubleshooting guidance recommends investigating congestion-control and lossless-fabric settings when RoCE performance is unstable. Its networking troubleshooting page points administrators toward indicators such as Priority Flow Control (PFC), Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN), Congestion Notification Packets (CNP) and queue drops, especially when tail latency rises.

What to validate before production

  • Priority mapping: Confirm that RDMA traffic is classified consistently from the host NIC through every switch and route.
  • PFC behavior: Verify that pause frames are limited to the intended priority and that a pause storm cannot spread through unrelated traffic.
  • ECN marking: Check thresholds, marking rates and host response so senders slow before buffers overflow.
  • CNP delivery: Ensure congestion notifications reach the correct senders and are visible in telemetry.
  • Queue and buffer health: Monitor drops, occupancy, retransmissions and hot links during synchronized collectives.
  • Failure handling: Test what happens when a link, queue, route or endpoint disappears and returns.

Do not interpret a clean idle test as proof of a stable RoCE fabric. Run synchronized multi-node jobs that create the same bursts and competing traffic expected in production.

What production experience can and cannot prove

Meta Engineering’s article, published August 5, 2024, describes its own production RoCE design and the co-design of collective behavior with the network. It reports up to a 40% AllReduce performance improvement for the specific E-ECMP and queue-pair-scaling configuration discussed, compared with its baseline without those techniques. The result is deployment-specific; it is not an InfiniBand-versus-RoCE head-to-head test and should not be treated as an expected gain for another cluster. The account also describes workload-specific tuning, which illustrates the operational effort that can accompany high-performance RoCE.

Use such case studies to identify design questions, not to transfer a percentage directly into a business case. Your own benchmark must state the hardware, topology, software, workload, baseline and method.

Rack-scale separation of traffic classes

The DGX GB example cited earlier assigns different traffic classes to different fabrics: NVLink for in-rack scale-up, InfiniBand for inter-rack compute scale-out, and Ethernet for storage, management and external connectivity. This arrangement makes the compute path easier to isolate, but it also means separate adapters, switches, cabling and operational domains.

Ethernet-first enterprise guidance

NVIDIA’s Enterprise Reference Architecture design tenets currently describe Ethernet-based recommendations using Spectrum-X, Spectrum switches, ConnectX SuperNICs and BlueField-3 DPUs, while leaving room for Quantum InfiniBand options for workloads or customers that require them. The two documents address different platform contexts; neither overrides the other.

A named scalable-unit example

The DGX B300 SuperPOD reference architecture describes a scalable unit of 64 DGX B300 systems and covers networking, storage, fabrics, rack layouts and wiring. Treat “64 systems” as the size of that named architecture example, not as a general threshold at which one fabric becomes preferable.

Physical design and cabling

Procurement follows the selected fabric and topology. Before ordering cables, document the switch and host port types, link generation, lane width, connector, required reach, rack position, bend radius, airflow path and spare policy. NVIDIA’s InfiniBand cabling primer describes generation-dependent connector and link-width differences and treats cabling as part of performance and physical design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The DGX SuperPOD cabling considerations also emphasize route planning and physical constraints. An “InfiniBand data center cable” is not a universal item: compatibility depends on the exact generation, transceiver or direct-attach design, connector and length. The same qualification applies to high-speed Ethernet optics and cables. Do not specify a SKU until the target hardware and routes are fixed.

Total cost, support and capacity planning

Compare complete designs, not port prices. Include host adapters or SuperNICs, switches, optics or direct-attach cables, racks, power, cooling, management systems, software support, spares, installation and staff time. Account for the cost of a second fabric if storage or management traffic is separated.

Current market prices vary by region, generation, support contract, topology and availability. The evidence does not establish a market-wide cost ranking. Request quotations for equivalent bandwidth, port counts, redundancy, warranty and support response, then model three-year operating costs and the cost of an outage or delayed training schedule.

Capacity planning should include growth and fragmentation. A fabric that is inexpensive for one rack can become difficult to expand if it lacks uplink ports, compatible optics or a consistent management model. Conversely, buying a large dedicated fabric before validating workload demand can leave expensive capacity idle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decision patterns that fit common situations

Situation Likely starting point Conditions that could change the choice
Small initial cluster with strong Ethernet automation and mixed enterprise traffic Evaluate RoCE on an engineered, monitored Ethernet design. Choose separate compute networking or InfiniBand if congestion isolation, support skills or benchmark results require it.
Large synchronized training fabric where predictable collective behavior is the top priority Benchmark native InfiniBand and RoCE at the planned scale; do not assume either wins. Topology, accelerator generation, software tuning and the team’s operational expertise can reverse the preference.
Organization already operates InfiniBand at scale InfiniBand may reduce transition and training risk for the compute fabric. Ethernet may still be preferable where a unified operational model or broader Ethernet ecosystem has greater value.
Organization has deep Ethernet skills but little RDMA experience RoCE is feasible only with an explicit RDMA training, telemetry and support plan. InfiniBand can be simpler for the first compute deployment if specialist support is available.
Compute, storage and management must share infrastructure Design a converged Ethernet architecture with strict traffic classes and congestion validation. Separate fabrics may be justified when isolation or failure containment outweighs hardware savings.

Pre-production acceptance checklist

  • Workload communication matrix and collective message distribution are documented.
  • Initial and maximum planned node counts, rack layout and oversubscription are approved.
  • Scale-up and scale-out links are clearly separated in the design.
  • NIC, switch, firmware, driver, kernel, collective-library and orchestration versions are fixed for testing.
  • RoCE priority, PFC, ECN, CNP, queue and buffer behavior is validated if Ethernet RDMA is used.
  • InfiniBand management, routing, firmware and monitoring procedures are tested if InfiniBand is used.
  • Representative training jobs meet throughput and latency-tail targets at production scale.
  • Degraded-link, failed-node, maintenance and restart scenarios are measured.
  • Storage, management and external traffic are either isolated or included in congestion tests.
  • Cable and optic types, lengths, connectors, routes and spares match the final hardware list.
  • Support ownership, escalation contacts, upgrade windows and rollback procedures are written down.
  • The business case includes power, cooling, support, staffing, expansion and outage costs.

Final decision rule

Select the fabric that meets the measured training target with the least operational and financial risk for your organization. If a RoCE test reaches the target and your team can maintain congestion controls and telemetry, Ethernet can provide a scalable RDMA platform while fitting broader Ethernet operations. If InfiniBand delivers the required predictability with lower support risk for your team, its dedicated fabric may be the better choice. Where traffic classes or platform guidance differ, a hybrid architecture can be the most defensible design.
