Choose by product exposure, not by the word “AI” in a company presentation. DRAM—including high-bandwidth memory (HBM)—is working memory placed close to CPUs and accelerators. NAND is non-volatile storage, most visibly deployed in enterprise solid-state drives (SSDs). AI data centers can increase demand for both, but they do so through different hardware budgets and supply chains. Compare each issuer’s HBM and server-DRAM exposure, NAND and SSD position, business diversification, qualification and shipment evidence, manufacturing plans, reported results, and valuation before deciding whether a stock fits your objective.
Micron spans both memory types; SK hynix reports exposure to HBM, server DRAM and NAND; Samsung Electronics combines a substantial Memory Business with large non-memory operations. Those are business-exposure observations, not predictions of which share price will rise. The disclosures available for this comparison do not establish a fair value, expected return or “best” stock.

DRAM, HBM and NAND: the distinction that drives the investment question
DRAM is temporary working memory
Dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) holds the data and instructions a processor is actively using. It is volatile: remove power and its contents disappear. In a server, DRAM capacity and bandwidth influence how much data CPUs and accelerators can work on without waiting for slower storage.
Conventional server DRAM can benefit when cloud operators add servers, increase memory per server or move to architectures that need more data close to the processor. That is a broader exposure than any single accelerator program, so it can matter even when a company has limited HBM sales.

HBM is specialized DRAM for accelerators
High-bandwidth memory is built from DRAM dies stacked and connected so an accelerator can move very large amounts of data quickly. It is still DRAM, not NAND. HBM is therefore a relatively direct way to observe accelerator-memory demand, while server DRAM captures a wider set of CPU and system requirements.
Direct does not mean guaranteed. HBM products must be designed into a customer platform, pass qualification, meet demanding yields and ship in volume. A supplier can describe a strong AI market while its own product mix, capacity or execution limits the financial benefit.
NAND is persistent storage
NAND flash retains data without power. It is used in SSDs and other storage devices rather than as the processor’s immediate working memory. In an AI data center, NAND demand can come from larger data sets, checkpoints, training pipelines, retrieval systems and the storage layer supporting inference.

How AI infrastructure can lift both memory categories
Training and serving require a memory hierarchy
Accelerators use HBM for high-bandwidth access to model parameters and intermediate data. Host systems add conventional DRAM for operating-system, orchestration and data-handling tasks. SSDs and other NAND-based storage hold training data, model checkpoints and data sets that do not fit in working memory.
Micron’s FY2025 Form 10-K says cloud servers supporting AI and other data-centric workloads require significantly increasing quantities of DRAM, including HBM, and NAND. That statement supports a two-part infrastructure thesis: compute growth can expand active-memory content while data growth expands persistent storage. It does not specify how much revenue any one product will contribute.

Inference introduces storage-specific workloads
Inference systems repeatedly retrieve model and user data. Some architectures use a key-value cache (KV-cache) to avoid recomputing context. Micron’s FY2026 fourth-quarter release says its 7600 PCIe Gen 5 and 9650 PCIe Gen 6 SSDs are shipping for KV-cache applications. This is evidence of an AI-related storage product milestone, not proof that KV-cache SSD sales will become a material share of company revenue.
System architecture determines the split
The ratio of HBM, server DRAM and NAND depends on the accelerator design, memory capacity, networking, storage software and deployment pattern. A training cluster may emphasize HBM bandwidth; a large inference fleet may add substantial SSD capacity; a general cloud expansion may increase conventional DRAM across many server types. Treat “AI infrastructure” as a set of hardware demand channels rather than a single end market.
Three stocks and what their disclosures actually show
The following comparison uses company disclosures and keeps business exposure separate from stock-return claims.
| Company | Exposure visible in official disclosures | Reported result or product evidence | How to interpret the exposure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micron Technology (Nasdaq: MU) | HBM, high-capacity and server DRAM, NAND, and data-center SSDs | FY2026 fourth-quarter materials describe shipments of 7600 PCIe Gen 5 and 9650 PCIe Gen 6 SSDs for KV-cache applications. FY2027 first-quarter revenue guidance was $61.5 billion ± $1.5 billion. | One portfolio spans both memory types, so the shares are not a pure DRAM, HBM or NAND proxy. Product shipments and guidance are useful execution markers. |
| SK hynix | HBM, server DRAM and NAND | FY2025 results reported revenue of KRW 97.1467 trillion, operating profit of KRW 47.2063 trillion and net profit of KRW 42.9479 trillion. Management said demand for HBM, server DRAM and NAND was expected to grow. | A broad memory supplier with substantial AI-relevant product exposure. The release does not provide a harmonized product-revenue split for comparison with peers. |
| Samsung Electronics | Conventional DRAM, HBM and NAND within a diversified electronics company | Its Memory Business reported record quarterly revenue and operating profit in Q4 FY2025. The 2026 plan included expanding AI-related DRAM and NAND products, alongside strength in conventional DRAM and expanded HBM sales. | Company-level shares include businesses beyond memory. Distinguish Memory Business performance from total-company AI sensitivity. |
Micron: a two-memory portfolio with identifiable milestones
Micron is the clearest example of why “DRAM stock” and “NAND stock” can be misleading labels. Its portfolio includes HBM and server DRAM as well as NAND-based data-center SSDs. The FY2026 fourth-quarter release provides a current storage milestone and FY2027 first-quarter guidance, allowing investors to track whether announced products become recurring shipments and revenue.
Micron also reported FY2026 third-quarter Cloud Memory Business Unit revenue of $13.769 billion and Core Data Center Business Unit revenue of $11.524 billion, published June 24, 2026. These business units are not equivalent to pure DRAM and NAND segments; do not add them together or treat either as a clean product-market measure.

SK hynix: reported scale across HBM, server DRAM and NAND
SK hynix’s FY2025 figures are company-reported results in Korean won, not a market forecast or a currency-neutral comparison with Micron. Management’s expectation that demand would grow “not only” for HBM but also for server DRAM and NAND indicates a broad memory thesis. It does not establish how much of the year’s profit came from each product, how durable pricing will be or whether the shares are attractively valued.

Samsung: memory strength inside a diversified group
Samsung’s Q4 and FY2025 release describes record quarterly Memory Business revenue and operating profit, strength in conventional DRAM, expanded HBM sales and a 2026 plan to expand AI-related DRAM and NAND products. Because Samsung also operates major businesses outside memory, its total-company earnings and valuation can respond to factors that have little to do with AI memory demand. Analyze the Memory Business separately from the consolidated stock.
A framework for choosing the exposure you actually want
1. Define the memory channel
- Accelerator bandwidth: prioritize evidence of HBM design wins, qualification, volume shipments and capacity.
- Broad server expansion: examine server-DRAM content, cloud customer demand and conventional DRAM execution.
- Persistent AI storage: examine enterprise SSD products, interface transitions, qualification and data-center storage demand.
- Balanced memory exposure: accept that a company selling DRAM and NAND will experience two different cycles rather than providing a pure bet on either one.
2. Measure concentration and diversification
Ask how much of the issuer’s economics comes from memory and how much comes from other businesses. A concentrated memory supplier may provide more operating sensitivity to a memory upcycle, but it can also be more exposed to pricing and utilization swings. A diversified company may dampen memory-specific volatility while introducing unrelated earnings drivers.
3. Separate evidence from forecasts
Place each statement in one of three buckets:
- Reported: revenue, profit, product shipments and segment results already disclosed for a stated fiscal period.
- Operational milestone: qualification, a new product, a stated shipment or a capacity project that still must translate into sustained sales.
- Management outlook: guidance, demand expectations and roadmaps that may not occur.
Micron’s FY2026 fourth-quarter release states: “These forward-looking statements are subject to a number of risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially.” Treat that warning as applicable to guidance, roadmaps and demand claims across the sector, not just to one number.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute4. Check manufacturing execution
HBM and advanced SSD products require customer qualification, acceptable yields, packaging and reliable volume production. Review whether a company reports qualification and shipments or only a product announcement. Then compare capital-expenditure plans, clean-room and packaging capacity, supply commitments and the time required to bring additions online. Capacity that arrives after a demand peak can earn less than planned; capacity constrained during a strong cycle can limit sales even when orders are available.
5. Examine the earnings quality
Read the latest annual and quarterly filings for revenue, gross margin, operating margin, inventory, capital spending and cash flow. A headline record profit can reflect pricing, mix, currency or a low comparison base. Look for whether improvement is broad across products or concentrated in one temporary condition.
6. Do valuation work separately
Operating momentum does not prove that a stock is cheap. A proper valuation requires a current share price, earnings or cash-flow assumptions, balance-sheet analysis and expectations already embedded in the price. None of the cited disclosures establishes a current price, earnings multiple, enterprise value or expected return. Do not convert a positive AI demand narrative into a buy conclusion without that work.

Risks that can make an apparently attractive memory thesis fail
Memory cyclicality
DRAM and NAND prices, utilization and margins can move sharply through supply-and-demand cycles. A strong quarter or optimistic industry commentary does not establish how long favorable pricing will last. Check subsequent results for inventory, contract pricing, spot-market conditions and customer ordering behavior.
Qualification, yield and capacity risk
AI customers may require lengthy validation before adopting a new HBM stack or enterprise SSD. Delays, lower yields, packaging bottlenecks or a late capacity ramp can shift volume to competitors. Conversely, aggressive capacity additions can create oversupply if demand slows.
Product-mix risk
A company that sells HBM, conventional DRAM and NAND is exposed to several cycles. HBM growth can coexist with weak NAND pricing, or SSD demand can improve while another product’s margins compress. Use product and segment disclosures rather than one blended corporate growth rate.
Forecast and roadmap risk
Management statements about AI demand, future products and planned capacity are inherently uncertain. SK hynix’s expectation of continuing growth across HBM, server DRAM and NAND is a management view, not an independent forecast. Micron’s forward-looking-statements warning makes the same point explicitly.
Currency and listing access
Micron is US-listed, while SK hynix and Samsung are Korean issuers. An investor’s return can be affected by the listing instrument, currency conversion, depositary-receipt structure, market hours, taxes and access rules in the investor’s jurisdiction. Verify the current instrument and local requirements before trading; those details change and are not established by the company releases summarized here.

A repeatable due-diligence checklist
Use this sequence before making a DRAM-or-NAND exposure decision:
- Read the newest annual and quarterly filing. Record fiscal period, revenue, margins, cash flow, inventory and capital expenditure.
- Map the product mix. Identify HBM, server DRAM, conventional DRAM, NAND and enterprise SSD references. Note whether percentages or only qualitative descriptions are provided.
- Verify customer-readiness evidence. Look for qualification, design wins, production status and actual shipments, distinguishing announcements from recurring volume.
- Track AI-specific products. For storage, check PCIe generation, data-center SSD launches and stated use cases such as KV-cache. For memory, check HBM generation, stack or packaging updates and server-DRAM content statements.
- Review capacity and execution. Compare planned fabs, packaging and equipment spending with stated demand and the timing of production ramps.
- Separate company results from segment results. This is essential for diversified groups such as Samsung, where Memory Business performance is only one part of consolidated earnings.
- Normalize currency and fiscal calendars. SK hynix’s KRW figures, Micron’s US-dollar reporting and Samsung’s reporting structure should not be compared without noting period and currency differences.
- Build a valuation case. Use current price and updated estimates; test optimistic, base and down-cycle scenarios rather than assuming current margins persist.
- Recheck after the next filing. Memory conditions and guidance can change quickly, so a historical result should not be treated as a permanent exposure profile.
What the available figures do—and do not—tell you
SK hynix reported FY2025 revenue of KRW 97.1467 trillion, operating profit of KRW 47.2063 trillion and net profit of KRW 42.9479 trillion. Those are realized company results for that fiscal year. They do not show the stock’s future return, a comparable product-level revenue split or whether the valuation discounts the results.
Micron’s FY2027 first-quarter guidance of $61.5 billion ± $1.5 billion is management guidance, not realized revenue. Its FY2026 third-quarter Cloud Memory Business Unit and Core Data Center Business Unit figures are useful operating disclosures, but neither unit is a pure DRAM or NAND segment. No independent, comparable DRAM-versus-NAND market-size or market-share statistic is established by the cited company materials, so avoid presenting one.

Bottom line: match the stock to the infrastructure layer
HBM and server DRAM are the more direct ways to express accelerator and broad server working-memory demand. NAND and enterprise SSDs express persistent-storage demand, including emerging inference uses. Micron offers exposure to both; SK hynix reports a broad memory portfolio; Samsung combines memory strength with substantial non-memory businesses.
The practical choice is therefore not “Which company says AI most often?” It is “Which mix of HBM, server DRAM and NAND do I want; how concentrated should the issuer be; and do current results, execution evidence and valuation support that exposure?” Answer those questions with the latest filings and market data, then treat every forecast as uncertain rather than as a promise.
