Choose Django when you need a broader web-application foundation, especially its built-in admin for trusted staff. Choose FastAPI when your main deliverable is a typed HTTP API and you want request validation and OpenAPI-based interactive documentation built into the workflow. Neither is universally better: the right choice depends on what you need to assemble, how your application handles I/O, and how it performs under your real workload.
What is the practical difference between Django and FastAPI?
FastAPI describes itself as “a modern, fast (high-performance), web framework for building APIs with Python based on standard Python type hints.” Its documentation connects Python types to request validation and API descriptions using OpenAPI and JSON Schema, and includes interactive documentation interfaces such as Swagger UI and ReDoc. Those features make it a natural candidate when an API contract is central to the product. FastAPI documentation
Django is a broader web-application framework. One notable integrated feature is its admin site: a configurable management interface intended for trusted users, not a replacement for a public-facing product interface. A public UI still needs to be built for the application. Django admin site
This is a difference in what each framework supplies directly, not a rule that Django cannot serve APIs or that FastAPI cannot be extended. FastAPI emphasizes integration with external libraries and database tooling; Django provides its own web-application capabilities, including async APIs. FastAPI features Django asynchronous support

Which framework fits your project?
| Project need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A whole web application with an internal data-management interface for trusted staff | Django | The built-in admin can reduce the need to assemble a separate management interface. It is not intended as the public product UI. Django admin site |
| An API-first product with typed request handling, validation, and interactive API docs | FastAPI | These capabilities are central to FastAPI’s documented workflow. FastAPI features |
| Concurrent I/O, WebSockets, or streaming responses | Evaluate both against the actual design | FastAPI is built on Starlette, which documents WebSockets and streaming. Django supports async views under ASGI, but middleware compatibility and async transaction limits affect the design. FastAPI features Django asynchronous support |
| A system where the team wants fewer separate components to choose and maintain | Often Django | Django’s integrated capabilities, including its admin, may reduce assembly. The result depends on the application’s needs and the team’s existing tools. Django admin site |
| A system where database, authentication, and other components should be selected independently | Often FastAPI | FastAPI’s documentation emphasizes integration with external libraries; that flexibility also means the team must choose and maintain its surrounding components. FastAPI features |
How does async support affect the choice?
Django can run async views, with important conditions
Django supports async views and asynchronous APIs in areas including ORM queries, cache, authentication, sessions, and signals. To get a fully asynchronous request stack, use ASGI; under WSGI, an async view runs in a one-off event loop and does not provide the advantages of a fully async stack. Synchronous middleware can require thread adaptation, so middleware compatibility matters as well. Django asynchronous support
Database work has additional constraints. Most SQL-triggering QuerySet operations have async variants, but transactions do not yet work in async mode. Django recommends putting transaction-dependent work in a synchronous function and calling it through sync_to_async(). Its guidance also recommends disabling persistent database connections in async mode and considering connection pooling. These limitations matter when designing an async-heavy database path; they do not mean Django has no async support. Django asynchronous support

FastAPI offers tools for API and concurrent-I/O patterns
FastAPI’s Starlette foundation includes documented capabilities such as WebSockets, background tasks, streaming responses, and session and cookie support. Those tools can suit API services with concurrent I/O or long-lived connections. They do not make every endpoint faster automatically: database access, external services, serialization, middleware, and deployment configuration all contribute to the work a request performs. Is FastAPI faster than Django?
The available official documentation does not establish a universal performance winner or provide a controlled, head-to-head comparison under matched application, database, server, and hardware conditions. Django’s documentation describes sync/async adaptation costs and advises measuring the effect of ASGI versus WSGI in the application. FastAPI’s homepage makes high-performance claims, but that is not evidence of a Django comparison. Django asynchronous support FastAPI homepage

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf performance will decide the framework, benchmark representative endpoints in the deployment you expect to use. Keep the data model, serialization, authentication, database, concurrency, worker settings, and hardware consistent, and include the work that dominates real requests rather than timing an empty route. Compare latency distribution, throughput, resource use, and implementation complexity. This is a way to make the decision, not a claim that either framework has been tested here.
What should you account for in security and deployment?
Django documents framework protections and deployment considerations, but the team remains responsible for appropriate configuration and application-specific security. Django security
FastAPI supplies reusable security-scheme tools, including HTTP Basic, OAuth2/JWT patterns, and API keys, with dependencies that can support application authentication. These are building blocks, not a complete authorization policy; the application still needs deliberate access rules and secure operational configuration. FastAPI security tutorial
Include deployment work in the framework decision. Django’s async guidance makes ASGI relevant for a fully async stack or long-lived requests; FastAPI has dedicated deployment guidance. Consider the team’s experience with ASGI servers, process management, observability, static assets, background work, and database connection pooling. Django asynchronous support FastAPI deployment

A decision process for Django vs FastAPI
- Define the deliverable. If it is a complete web application, list the user-facing and staff-facing interfaces it needs. If it is primarily an HTTP API, identify the contract, validation, and documentation requirements. FastAPI explicitly centers API construction; Django’s admin and broader capabilities can help with application-style projects. FastAPI documentation Django admin site
- Check who needs to manage data. If trusted staff need an internal interface, decide whether Django’s admin fits that task. Do not count it as the public product UI.
- Map the API workflow. If typed schemas, validation, OpenAPI descriptions, and interactive documentation are important, account for FastAPI’s built-in support for those needs. FastAPI features
- Trace the I/O and database path. For WebSockets, streaming, or other concurrent-I/O needs, examine the relevant framework and deployment setup. For Django, check ASGI, middleware compatibility, transaction boundaries, and connection handling before committing to async database work. FastAPI features Django asynchronous support
- Count components the team must own. Compare how much integration and maintenance your application will require for its ORM, admin, authentication, migrations, and other facilities. Django’s included features may reduce the number of choices; FastAPI’s flexibility means selecting the surrounding components.
- Measure if speed is decisive. Test representative application behavior under the expected deployment instead of choosing from framework-level performance claims.
Can you use Django and FastAPI together?
Combining them can make sense when there is a concrete architectural reason to retain Django’s application or admin facilities while exposing selected services through FastAPI. It is not a default shortcut: a combined design adds integration and operational complexity. Use it only when the requirements justify owning that boundary.
