For a character that lives in a game scene, start with the engine’s world-object type—not a standalone class or struct. Add reusable capabilities through components where appropriate, use structs for value-like data, and reserve ordinary objects for logic that does not need scene identity or engine lifecycle. These choices can work together in one character rather than competing as mutually exclusive designs.
What the choice actually means
“Class,” “struct,” and “plain object” describe different things. A class or struct is a language-level type choice; an engine world object is a framework-managed entity with scene identity and engine integration. A plain object here means an ordinary object that is not managed as a scene entity. The exact terminology and capabilities depend on the engine.
Unity describes GameObjects as fundamental objects representing characters, props, and scenery, with Components supplying their functionality. Unity’s Unity 6.0 manual therefore makes the live character more than a class-versus-struct question: its scene representation is typically a GameObject with attached components. Unity: Introduction to GameObjects.
Choose by responsibility
| Use | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Active character in a scene | Engine-supported world object | Needed when the character must have scene identity, transforms, lifecycle, rendering, collision, or engine references. |
| Reusable capabilities | Components attached to the world object | Separates roles such as movement, health, inventory, or interaction instead of putting every responsibility in one large character class. |
| Compact, value-like state | Struct | Useful for data such as a stats snapshot, configuration, coordinates, or event payload when independent engine-managed identity is unnecessary. |
| Rules, helpers, or strategies | Plain object | Provides ordinary language behavior without requiring scene presence or engine lifecycle. |
This is a responsibility guide, not a universal performance ranking. A character can be an engine world object, own components, store value data in structs, and delegate rules to plain objects.

How the distinction works in Unity
Unity’s traditional object-oriented approach organizes behavior around GameObjects and attached MonoBehaviour components. Unity describes MonoBehaviour components as encapsulating logic and data together, a convenient model that can have performance issues at scale. Its Unity 6.0.3 documentation contrasts this with data-oriented development, which separates code and data to target CPU cache efficiency and parallelism; in ECS, components hold data and systems hold logic. The documentation provides no measured threshold or universal recommendation. Unity: Object-oriented development.
In practice, give a scene character its GameObject identity and put independently reusable behavior into components where that improves organization. Keep non-scene rules or helper logic in ordinary objects when they do not need MonoBehaviour or scene lifecycle. Use value-oriented types for data where their semantics suit the task. Unity’s getting-started documentation also describes GameObjects as representations of characters whose behavior is defined by components. Unity: Key concepts.

How the distinction works in Unreal Engine
In Unreal Engine 5.8, UObject is the shared base class for most Unreal classes. An Actor is a UObject subclass and a close analogue to Unity’s GameObject; Actors support components and transforms. Unlike the simplified notion that all functionality must live in components, Unreal Actors can also be extended directly. Unreal’s Character type is a Pawn subtype with movement and collision functionality, making it relevant for humanoid-style characters. Epic: Game Objects in Unreal Engine.
Unreal’s reflected structs are UStructs, but they are outside the UObject ecosystem. Epic says a UStruct is faster to create than a UObject with the same data layout. That is a narrow Unreal documentation claim about creation; it does not establish that structs are universally faster in all engines or workloads. Use a UStruct for related data when an independently managed UObject lifecycle is unnecessary, and use an Actor or other suitable UObject when engine-facing identity and capabilities are required. Epic: Structs in Unreal Engine.

Questions to settle before choosing
- Does it need scene identity? If engine systems must find, transform, render, collide with, or manage the character, choose the engine’s world-object model.
- Does the behavior need an engine lifecycle? If it must participate in engine callbacks or attach to engine components, use the engine-supported type for that role rather than a plain object.
- Is this data or an independently behaving entity? Favor a struct for value-like data whose independent identity and lifecycle are not needed. Favor a plain object for ordinary logic that needs behavior but not scene integration.
- Will this capability be reused independently? If the engine’s component model supports it, composition can keep reusable roles separate from the character’s core world identity.
- Is scale a measured problem? Profile the real workload before changing architecture. Unity describes potential scale concerns and data-oriented goals, but gives no entity-count cutoff; do not choose ECS or another architecture based on an invented universal threshold.
Avoid the two common design traps
Making one character class responsible for everything
A single class that accumulates movement, inventory, health, animation coordination, and interaction can become difficult to reuse and change. Components offer a way to divide those capabilities by role, where the engine supports them. The specific component boundaries are project design choices, not a list prescribed by Unity or Unreal.
Choosing a struct because it sounds faster
A struct is primarily a representation and value-semantics choice, not a substitute for a scene entity. Unreal’s documented creation-speed comparison applies specifically to a UStruct versus a UObject with the same data layout; it does not justify a blanket claim that structs outperform classes at runtime. For a performance-sensitive system, profile the actual operations and data patterns.

A practical default
- Represent each active character with the engine-managed world object appropriate to the engine—such as a Unity GameObject with components or an Unreal Actor (and, for a humanoid-style Unreal character, consider the Character type).
- Assign distinct, reusable capabilities to components when doing so keeps responsibilities clear.
- Keep compact value-like state in structs and non-scene rules or helpers in plain objects when their respective semantics fit.
- If a large population or hot update loop is actually a bottleneck, measure it and evaluate data-oriented alternatives against that workload rather than changing the model preemptively.
