Both Chase Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Venture list a $95 annual fee, but they suit different spending and travel habits. Choose Chase if you can use its broader bonus categories, Chase Travel hotel credit, and transfer partners; choose Venture if you prefer earning 2 miles per dollar on most purchases and want a simpler rewards structure. Neither card is automatically worth its fee: the deciding factors are the purchases you make, the booking channel you will use, and the rewards you can actually redeem.

Which card fits your spending?
Choose Chase for its wider set of bonus categories
Chase lists 3 points per dollar on dining worldwide, eligible online grocery purchases, top streaming services, gas and EV charging, and vacation homes at named brands. Travel booked through Chase Travel earns 5 points per dollar, other travel earns 2, and other purchases earn 1. The gas and EV charging and vacation-home categories were added in benefits announced June 15, 2026.
This structure can be a better fit if a meaningful share of your spending falls into the listed categories. Check Chase’s category definitions: not every grocery, streaming, lodging, or travel purchase necessarily qualifies for a bonus.

Choose Venture for a straightforward general rate
Venture earns unlimited 2 miles per dollar on purchases generally, with 5 miles per dollar on eligible hotel, vacation-rental, and rental-car bookings through Capital One Travel. Its general rate is easier to follow if you do not want to track multiple spending categories. The 5X rate is tied to eligible portal bookings, rather than all travel purchases.
A useful first comparison is to estimate your annual spending in Chase’s eligible 3X categories, other travel, and general purchases, then compare it with Venture’s general 2X rate. That estimate still cannot identify a winner without knowing how you will redeem the rewards.
Will you use the travel credits?
Chase’s hotel credit requires a Chase Travel booking
Chase offers up to $100 in statement credits each account anniversary year for hotel stays booked through Chase Travel. It can offset the fee only to the extent that you make a qualifying booking you would have chosen anyway. Compare the portal’s available stay, total price, and booking conditions with alternatives before counting the credit at face value.
Venture’s benefits have different conditions
Capital One advertises a $50 experience credit per Lifestyle Collection stay and up to $120 toward a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application. Its current offer page, accessed October 7, 2026, displayed a $300 credit for Capital One Travel stays during the first cardholder year. That offer is time-sensitive and should not be treated as a recurring annual benefit. Venture’s 5X portal earning also depends on booking eligible travel through Capital One Travel.

For either card, count a credit only if its conditions fit your plans and you expect to use it. A nominal credit does not reduce your effective cost if it sends you to a booking channel or purchase you would otherwise avoid.
How do points and miles work for your travel?
Both issuers offer loyalty-program transfers, but the useful comparison is not the size of a partner list alone. Check whether a program serves the routes or hotels you want, whether award space is available, and what transfer ratio applies when you book. Chase lists airline and hotel partners; most transfers are 1:1, but World of Hyatt transfers are currently 4:3. Chase’s former 1:1 Hyatt rate ended for existing Sapphire Preferred cardholders on October 1, 2026, following a transition period.
Chase also offers Points Boost on selected travel bookings. Offers rotate, so a promoted maximum value is not a standard value for every point or booking. Capital One advertises transfers to 15+ loyalty programs, but transfer rates and partner terms vary; verify them before transferring.
Capital One also lets cardholders redeem miles against recent travel purchases. That cash-like approach differs from transferring to a loyalty program, where the result depends on award pricing and availability. Neither method guarantees a particular value per mile or point.

Which card has the protections you need?
Chase lists trip delay reimbursement, lost-luggage reimbursement, trip cancellation/interruption insurance, rental-car coverage, travel accident insurance, and emergency evacuation/transportation. Capital One lists travel accident insurance and an auto-rental collision damage waiver. Capital One also advertises Hertz Five Star status for eligible cardholders.
These are issuer-listed benefits, not a determination that a particular trip, traveler, or claim is covered. Before relying on a protection, read the relevant current benefit guide for covered people, eligible purchases, claim procedures, limits, and exclusions. The card summary pages do not establish a complete, directly comparable insurance assessment.
What about the current welcome offers?
Welcome offers are temporary and can change independently of a card’s regular rewards. The offers displayed by issuers accessed October 7, 2026 were:

| Capital One Venture | 75,000 miles after $4,000 in purchases during the first three months, plus a $300 Capital One Travel stays credit during the first cardholder year. | Capital One offer page accessed October 7, 2026; verify the live application terms. |
| Chase Sapphire Preferred | 100,000 points after $5,000 in purchases during the first three months. | Announced in Chase’s June 15, 2026 release; the release does not establish that this offer remains available. Check Chase’s live application page. |
Only count a bonus if you can meet its spending requirement through planned purchases without taking on debt or buying things you do not need. The offers are issuer-published terms, not independent estimates of the points’ value.
A practical way to make the choice
- Map your spending. Identify how much you expect to spend in Chase’s eligible bonus categories and on general purchases. Compare that with Venture’s broad 2X rate.
- Check your booking habits. Decide whether you would genuinely book qualifying hotels through Chase Travel or eligible hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars through Capital One Travel.
- Value only usable credits. Include a credit in your comparison only when you can meet its conditions and expect to use it.
- Look up the rewards you would redeem. Compare relevant transfer partners, current ratios, and award availability, or consider whether redeeming miles for recent travel purchases better suits you.
- Read the benefit guides for your priorities. Review the actual terms for the trip protections or rental coverage you care about instead of relying on a summary list.
- Verify live application terms. Check each issuer’s current annual fee, benefits, and welcome offer immediately before applying.
Bottom line: match the card to your habits
Chase Sapphire Preferred is the stronger candidate if you will earn meaningfully from its bonus categories, use the Chase Travel hotel credit, or can make effective use of its transfer options. Capital One Venture is the simpler fit if you value a general 2X earning rate and expect to use its portal-linked earning or other listed benefits. Since both list a $95 annual fee, neither should win on fee alone; your booking preferences and realistic redemption choices decide which is more useful to you.
