Buy at launch when playing immediately has real value to you and you can accept uncertainty. Wait when your choice depends on evidence about performance, stability, content, accessibility, or online features. A review is most useful when it covers your platform and explains what the reviewer actually tested—not when it offers only a score.
Start with what could change your decision
Ask yourself which unanswered questions might make you choose differently. If you already know the game suits your tastes and want to play with friends on release day, early access may be worth the risk. If you need to know whether it runs well on your hardware, has enough content, or supports the features you need, waiting gives you a chance to assess those points first.

Also weigh the cost of getting it wrong. Consider the price against your budget and how disappointing a poor fit would be. Waiting may give you more information or a different price later, but neither a discount nor continued availability is guaranteed.

When buying at launch makes sense
- You have strong reasons to expect the game fits your preferences.
- Playing immediately matters—for example, friends are joining, or a launch event is important to you.
- You accept that early reviews or later updates could reveal problems you did not anticipate.
- You have checked the refund terms for the exact store, region, edition, and purchase type.
For a multiplayer game, consider whether your friends or the community you want to join will actually be active at launch. Do not assume every game has a launch window that makes waiting costly.

When waiting for reviews is the better move
- Your decision depends on technical performance, bugs, stability, or controls.
- You want evidence about content depth, accessibility, or online functionality.
- You are unsure whether the game matches your tastes, or a disappointing purchase would strain your budget.
- You want to compare reports from players as well as professional reviewers before committing.
For a game in Early Access, judge the version available now rather than buying mainly on promised future changes. Steam Support advises: “If you aren’t excited to play the game in its current state, then hold off and wait until a future update or full release.” That is Steam’s guidance for Early Access, not a universal rule for every launch (Steam Early Access FAQ).
How to judge whether reviews answer your questions
Look for reviews that explain their evidence and address the factors you care about. Prefer coverage of the platform you intend to use; performance on one platform may not settle questions about another. Useful reviews discuss areas such as:
Rank #2
- XBOX GIFT CARD: Buy full digital game downloads, game add-ons, in-game currency, memberships, devices, apps, movies, TV shows, and more.
- DIGITAL GAMES: Choose from hundreds of games, from AAA to indie options. Start playing the moment your most anticipated game is available when you pre-order and pre-download it.
- GAME AD-ONS: Extend the experience of your favorite games with add-ons and in-game currency.
- MOVIES & TV SHOWS: Rent or buy new and popular movies and TV shows from a massive library.
- PERFECT GIFT: Great as a gift for a friend or yourself. Xbox Gift Cards are easy to use, never expire, and give the freedom to pick the gift they want. Enjoy more ways to play without a credit card attached to your Microsoft account.
- Performance, bugs, and stability on the tested platform.
- Content and how much of it the reviewer experienced.
- Controls, accessibility, and online features where relevant.
- The reviewer’s basis for comparison and any important limits on testing.
A score or review count cannot tell you by itself whether the game suits your preferences. Read the reasoning behind the verdict and compare it with what matters to you.
Do not use an embargo date as a quality verdict
A review embargo close to release is not, by itself, proof that a game is good or bad. The 2024 Big Games Machine Games Journalist Survey discusses how short lead times for review builds can pressure reviewers and contribute to coverage appearing after release. It does not establish that embargo timing predicts quality (2024 Big Games Machine Games Journalist Survey).

Check refunds before you rely on them
Refund eligibility depends on the storefront, region, product, timing, and use. Treat a refund policy as a remedy with conditions, not as a free trial unless the terms explicitly allow that outcome. Check the live policy for your transaction before buying, especially if pre-loading, downloading, launching, or playing could affect eligibility.
| Store and region | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Steam pre-orders | Steam says a pre-order can be refunded any time before release. After release, the standard policy applies; an Advanced Access pre-purchase has a different cutoff. Check the current Steam refund policy and Steam pre-order FAQ. |
| PlayStation Store, United States | Check the US policy’s conditions for cancelling pre-orders and for downloaded or streamed content. Do not assume a downloaded or opened game can be returned as a trial: PlayStation Store pre-order cancellation policy. |
| PlayStation Store, United Kingdom | The UK policy describes immediate digital delivery and how consent affects cancellation rights. It is separate from the US policy and should not be applied to other regions: PlayStation Store cancellation policy. |
| EA app or EA.com | Eligibility depends on the purchase channel and stated criteria. EA describes a limited route for certain new games that cannot be played for technical reasons within EA’s control; this is not a general satisfaction guarantee: EA purchase and cancellation policy. |
| Steam in the EU or UK | Steam separately explains its voluntary refund policy and its interaction with statutory withdrawal rights. Applicable legal rights depend on jurisdiction and purchase facts: Steam refund policy. |
These policies describe the named storefronts and regions; they are not legal advice or a promise that a particular request will qualify. Terms can change, so confirm the current rules for your purchase.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
Account for physical editions without confusing format with timing
A physical copy may suit you if you have already chosen a game and want that format. It does not resolve the launch-versus-wait question: you still need to decide whether to buy before you have enough evidence. PlayStation has recognized retail and PlayStation Store as purchase channels, and announced on July 1, 2026 that production of physical game discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles would be discontinued starting January 2028 (PlayStation.Blog). That announcement concerns disc production for new PlayStation games; it does not say physical games or retail sales end in 2028.

A quick decision checklist
- Name your reason to play now. Is immediate access worth something specific to you, such as playing with friends?
- Identify decision-sensitive unknowns. Could evidence about performance, bugs, content, controls, accessibility, or online play change your mind?
- Assess the downside. Would the cost of a poor fit be acceptable within your budget?
- Check the exact refund rules. Match the policy to your store, region, edition, and purchase type, including any effect of early access, downloads, or play.
- Choose the evidence threshold that fits. If reviews address your key concerns on your platform, decide from them; if important questions remain, waiting preserves the option to learn more.
