A Tag Character adds an in-battle switch between its linked fighters, but it still counts as one unit for relevant party-member effects. The better setup depends on your roster and the mode you are playing.
Start with the characters’ ability support
Bandai Namco’s party-formation FAQ recommends building around Z Abilities. These abilities can target characters with specified Tags or Episodes, so a useful first check is whether your intended lineup actually meets those conditions. Sharing a color does not, on its own, show that a character receives the team’s ability support.

To inspect a character, long-press its portrait and choose “Show Details” to check its Tags and Episodes. The Party Formation filter can also help you find characters that match a relevant category. Compare each ability’s stated target with the characters you plan to use rather than assuming that a broadly similar lineup qualifies.
What a Tag Character changes—and what it does not
A Tag Character is two linked characters fighting as one unit. The Dragon Ball Legends help reference describes switching between them through a Switch Gauge. Tags and several battle attributes are shared, while some effects that depend on which character is active apply only to that active character.

- Official Dragon Ball Super Masters Expansion Ultra Bout Set 4: Impact Beyond Dimensions (B31).
- Factory Sealed Booster Box Contains 24 booster packs with 12 cards per pack.
- 178 Total Card Types Includes Commons, Super Rares, Secret Rares, Concept Rares and two God Rare cards.
- New Characters & Fusion Warriors Features cards from Super Dragon Ball Heroes including Aeos, Warrior in Black and additional Fusion Warrior support.
- English Edition Official Bandai English-language release.
That distinction matters both in battle and when reading ability conditions. A switch gives you access to the linked characters’ in-battle mechanic, but it does not turn one party slot into two separate units for effects that count party members.
Count party requirements by unit
According to the help reference, abilities that count party members with a particular character or Tag count a Tag Character as one character. If an ability calls for a number of qualifying party members, check the condition against the actual lineup; do not count both linked characters as separate party members.

Compare the two approaches against your roster
| Decision point | Party built around a Tag Character | Single-color party |
|---|---|---|
| Ability fit | Check the unit’s Tags and Episodes against the party’s Z Abilities, and note whether a condition depends on which linked character is active. | Check that each character meets the Z Abilities’ target conditions. A shared color alone does not establish that the team’s abilities support them. |
| Member counts | For abilities that count qualifying characters or Tags, the Tag Character unit counts as one. | Count each separate character as one unit, then verify that the lineup satisfies the ability’s stated condition. |
| Battle flexibility | The linked characters can switch when the Switch Gauge is full and the unit can act. | The party uses its individual selected characters. Whether they cover a matchup depends on their kits and the mode. |
| Mode restrictions | Check the mode’s current party requirements and bonuses; a Tag mechanic does not exempt the lineup from them. | Check the same requirements. A color-focused lineup does not override event composition rules. |
This comparison is about mechanics and team fit, not a ranking: the official materials explain party-building and mode rules, but do not establish a universal winner between these approaches or provide a current win-rate comparison.

Check the mode before settling on a team
Party rules and bonuses can vary by mode or event. For example, an official Tournament of Power announcement described six-character parties and boosts that varied by season. An official Tri-arena announcement dated April 4, 2025 illustrated that an event could impose its own team-composition conditions and combat rules. These announcements show why it is worth checking the current in-game rules; they do not establish what either mode requires or offers now.

A practical way to choose
- Check the mode. Read its current team-size, composition, and bonus rules in-game before building around a preferred archetype.
- Read your candidates’ Z Abilities. Note the Tags or Episodes each one supports.
- Verify the lineup. Use “Show Details” and the Party Formation filter to check whether the characters you plan to use match those targets.
- Count units accurately. Treat a Tag Character as one party member when an ability counts characters or Tags.
- Choose the structure that fits. Favor a Tag Character when its actual ability fit and switching mechanic suit your lineup; favor a single-color setup when your selected characters and their ability support make that structure work. Do not use color concentration or the word “Tag” as a substitute for checking the conditions.
