How to Choose Between a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S When Console Prices Are High: 2026 Cost Guide

There is no universal winner when console prices are high. Choose the console that fits the games you will actually play, your need for physical discs, your display resolution, available storage and the subscription you will keep paying for. Compare the current local listing for the exact model—not an old MSRP—then calculate the cost over the years you expect to own it.

The premium comparison is a disc-equipped PS5 versus Xbox Series X. Xbox Series S is a separate, lower-spec, digital-only option aimed at a lower entry price. A PS5 Digital Edition is also digital-only as sold. Existing game libraries, used-game access and your multiplayer group can matter more than a small difference in the checkout price.

What changed about PS5 and Xbox prices in 2026?

Prices are unusually volatile, so recommendations based on launch pricing or an old retailer page can be wrong. Sony announced U.S. recommended prices effective April 2, 2026:

PlayStation model U.S. recommended price announced by Sony What the figure means
PS5 US$649.99 Recommended retail price, not a guarantee of a current sale price
PS5 Digital Edition US$599.99 Recommended retail price for the digital-only model
PS5 Pro US$899.99 Recommended retail price for Sony’s higher-end model

The same Sony announcement listed recommended prices for the U.K., Europe and Japan, but the amount you pay depends on the country, retailer, taxes and stock. Sony Interactive Entertainment vice president of global marketing Isabelle Tomatis wrote on March 27, 2026: “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.”

Microsoft announced worldwide Xbox price changes effective August 1, 2026. The company said prices would rise by US$100 for 512 GB models and US$150 for 1 TB models, and that the 2 TB model would be sunset. Microsoft did not publish a complete post-change U.S. price list by SKU in that announcement. Its U.S. pricing document dated October 3, 2025 is historical and should not be treated as a current price sheet.

That makes the practical rule simple: check the current local listing for the exact Xbox Series X or Series S capacity before comparing it with a PS5. Microsoft also says certified refurbished Xbox consoles have been offered through Microsoft Stores for up to US$100 off MSRP, with previously played units potentially available at lower prices through retail partners. The maximum discount is not guaranteed; region, model, stock, condition and warranty determine the final value.

Start with the model that actually matches your needs

Model Disc drive Stated storage configurations Stated resolution or positioning Best fit
PS5 Yes; plays PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray discs 1 TB Sony’s product page describes the hardware; no controlled cross-console benchmark is established here Physical games, used games, Blu-ray movies and digital purchases
PS5 Digital Edition No drive as sold; an additional drive is available for certain slim model groups 825 GB Same digital-first PS5 family, with less storage than the cited 1 TB model Players who download everything and accept digital-store pricing
PS5 Pro Check the exact package and drive compatibility before buying Not stated in the cited material Higher-end PS5 option Buyers specifically seeking Sony’s premium model and willing to pay the largest upfront price
Xbox Series X Yes; UHD Blu-ray player 1 TB or 2 TB configurations are described; Microsoft announced the 2 TB model would be sunset Microsoft describes games displayed in native 4K 4K displays, physical Xbox games and a higher-performance Xbox option
Xbox Series S No; digital-only 512 GB or 1 TB Designed for 1440p, with the ability to upscale to 4K Lower-cost digital libraries and players who do not need a disc drive

Do not treat Series S as Series X hardware at a lower price. It has a different storage range and a lower stated resolution target. Likewise, a digital PS5 is not automatically the cheaper long-term choice if you routinely buy discounted discs or used games.

Disc games, used games and Blu-ray collections

When a disc drive saves money

A disc-capable console lets you buy used games, borrow titles, resell games and shop physical discounts. It also allows a Blu-ray movie collection to remain useful. Calculate the price difference between the disc and digital console, then estimate how many discounted or used purchases would recover that difference. Use your actual buying habits rather than assuming every physical release is cheaper.

PS5 choices

The cited PS5 model has a 1 TB drive-equipped configuration that plays PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray discs as well as digital downloads. The PS5 Digital Edition is an all-digital 825 GB model. Sony says an additional drive is available for certain slim model groups, so verify the exact chassis and accessory compatibility before choosing the cheaper digital package. A drive sold separately can erase much of the initial saving.

Xbox choices

Xbox Series X includes a UHD Blu-ray player. Xbox Series S is disc-free, so discs from an Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox collection cannot be used on it. A digital copy must be purchased instead, and some older games may not have a digital version available. If your household already owns physical Xbox games, compare Series X pricing with the cost of replacing only the titles you still want to play.

Games and existing libraries should decide the shortlist

Check the games your household will play first

  1. Write down the five to ten games that will determine the purchase, including console exclusives and the games your friends use for multiplayer.
  2. Check the current console version for every title rather than relying on a franchise name. Editions, regions and backward-compatibility support can differ.
  3. Separate games you own physically from those you own digitally. A digital-only console cannot use a disc license.
  4. Check whether a game requires a subscription for online features and whether the required tier includes other games you would actually use.

PS5 compatibility

Sony’s current PS5 product page states that more than 8,500 PS4 games can be played on PS5. That is a broad platform figure, not a promise that every PS4 title, add-on or peripheral works identically. Confirm unusual games and accessories individually, especially if you rely on a physical copy or a title removed from digital stores.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox compatibility

Microsoft describes thousands of Xbox games spanning four generations, but backward compatibility for older generations is selective. A statement covering thousands of games does not mean every original Xbox, Xbox 360 or Xbox One title is supported. Search Microsoft’s compatibility information for each game you own, and check whether your disc is one of the supported products.

Library fit can outweigh a modest hardware-price difference. A console that gives your household access to its existing games avoids repurchases, while the wrong digital model can turn a supposedly cheap purchase into a larger software bill.

Resolution and hardware positioning

Xbox Series X and Series S

Microsoft describes Series X as displaying games in native 4K. It describes Series S as designed for 1440p, with the ability to upscale output to 4K. Those statements are product positioning, not a guarantee that every game runs at the same frame rate or resolution. Developers can choose different modes, and television settings affect the result.

Series S can be sensible on a 1080p or 1440p display, for a second room or for a player who values access to a digital catalogue over maximum image detail. On a large 4K television, Series X is the closer Xbox match if native 4K presentation is important to you.

PS5 and PS5 Pro

Sony’s cited product information identifies the PS5 family and its models, but the available evidence does not establish a controlled PS5-versus-Series-X performance ranking. Do not choose from unsupported claims that one console is always faster. Compare the resolution and performance modes offered by the specific games you care about, along with your display’s refresh rate and features.

Rank #3
Xbox Series S | Digital Gaming Console | 512GB SSD | Includes Wireless Controller, 1440P Gaming, 120FPS, Robot White

Storage changes the real price

Modern games can consume enough space that the advertised console price is only the beginning. The cited capacities are:

  • PS5: 1 TB.
  • PS5 Digital Edition: 825 GB.
  • Xbox Series S: 512 GB or 1 TB.
  • Xbox Series X: 1 TB or 2 TB configurations are described, although Microsoft announced that the 2 TB model would be sunset.

Usable capacity is lower than the headline number because the operating system reserves space. Count the games you expect to keep installed, including large multiplayer titles and updates. If you regularly rotate games, a smaller drive may be adequate; if you keep a large library installed, the difference between 512 GB, 825 GB and 1 TB becomes significant.

Microsoft identifies a separately sold storage expansion card for Xbox. Add its current local price to the console when comparing a lower-capacity Series S or Series X. Check that the card is compatible with the exact Xbox model and supports the games you want to run from it. Do the same kind of calculation for any PlayStation storage expansion you are considering, using the current model’s compatibility requirements rather than an old accessory listing.

Include subscriptions in the ownership cost

A low checkout price can become expensive over several years if online play and catalogue access require a recurring plan. Sony describes PlayStation Plus as having multiple membership plans and evolving PS5 and PS4 game libraries. Microsoft says online console multiplayer requires an Xbox Game Pass subscription. Tiers, regional fees, benefits and catalogues change, so verify the current terms at purchase time.

Use this calculation for each console:

Total ownership cost = console price + required accessories + expected storage expansion + subscription payments + games you would otherwise buy.

For a two-year comparison, multiply the current monthly or annual subscription fee by the number of months you expect to keep it. Then add only the subscriptions you would genuinely maintain. A household that plays free-to-play games and rarely uses a catalogue may not receive the same value as a family that downloads several included games each month.

Compare equivalent regional plans on the same date. No single same-date regional fee comparison is established here, and converting a U.S. fee into another currency can hide taxes or different benefits. Record the renewal price, not just an introductory offer.

A step-by-step buying method

  1. List the deciding games. Include exclusives, co-op games, multiplayer groups and games already owned. Verify each title’s platform and backward-compatibility status.
  2. Decide whether discs matter. Count physical games, used-game purchases, borrowed discs and Blu-ray movies. If any are important, remove Series S and PS5 Digital Edition from the shortlist unless you are willing to replace that library digitally.
  3. Set the display target. For a 4K television where native 4K output matters, compare PS5 and Series X first. For a 1080p or 1440p screen and a digital-only library, Series S may meet the practical requirement.
  4. Record current local prices. Capture the exact model, storage capacity, drive status, taxes, delivery cost and return policy. Do not use Sony’s recommended price or an old Xbox MSRP as if it were today’s checkout price.
  5. Add storage. Price a compatible expansion option if the included capacity will not hold your normal installed library.
  6. Add recurring costs. Enter the current regional subscription fee, renewal terms and the months you expect to pay. Include the catalogue value only if the household will use it.
  7. Check the controller and accessory requirement. Add extra controllers, a headset or a disc drive where needed. A bundle can be cheaper than buying accessories separately, but compare what is actually in the box.
  8. Compare new, certified refurbished and previously played units. For each, record warranty length, return window, condition grade, included controller, drive operation and final delivered price.
  9. Recheck availability at checkout. Price changes and stock can occur between research and purchase, particularly after the 2026 announcements.

Which choice fits common situations?

You own a large physical PlayStation or Xbox collection

Choose a disc-equipped model in the matching ecosystem. For PlayStation, that means the drive-equipped PS5 rather than the 825 GB Digital Edition. For Xbox, Series X is the relevant choice because Series S cannot read discs. Confirm that the specific older games are supported before assuming the collection transfers.

You download everything and want the lowest entry price

Compare PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S using current local prices, storage and subscription terms. Series S has the lower stated 1440p target and may need expansion sooner, while the PS5 Digital Edition has 825 GB of cited storage and can cost more upfront. The cheapest sticker price is not automatically the lowest two-year cost.

You have a 4K television and want the strongest Xbox option

Start with Series X because Microsoft positions it for native 4K output and includes a UHD Blu-ray drive. Compare it with the drive-equipped PS5 if your deciding games are on PlayStation. Do not pay for a 2 TB Xbox model without confirming that it is still available and that its price makes sense after Microsoft’s announced sunset.

Your friends already play on one platform

Use the multiplayer group as a primary filter. Cross-play is not universal, and moving platforms can require buying games again. Verify the exact edition, voice-chat requirements and subscription needed for the games your group plays.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are buying for a second room or a child

Series S can be appropriate when digital purchases are acceptable, the display is 1080p or 1440p, and the owner does not need discs. Set storage expectations early: a 512 GB model can require more frequent uninstalling than a 1 TB model. A digital PS5 may be preferable when the deciding games are PlayStation titles, but compare its 825 GB capacity and the price of any compatible drive.

You want a premium model regardless of price

PS5 Pro is listed by Sony at a U.S. recommended price of US$899.99 effective April 2, 2026. It belongs in a separate premium decision, not a direct value comparison with Series S. Buy it only after checking the exact games, display benefits and disc-drive arrangement you require.

How to evaluate refurbished or previously played hardware

Refurbished hardware can reduce the upfront cost when new prices are high. Microsoft says certified refurbished Xbox consoles have been available through Microsoft Stores for up to US$100 off MSRP; that is a maximum stated saving, not a standing price. Retail-partner previously played units may cost less, but condition and warranty vary.

  • Confirm the exact model and storage capacity, not just the family name.
  • Check whether the unit includes the original controller, power cable and, for a disc model, a working optical drive.
  • Read the warranty period, return window and who provides support.
  • Ask whether the console was professionally tested and whether cosmetic wear is disclosed.
  • Compare the delivered refurbished price with a new sale price after taxes and shipping.
  • Inspect the serial number and account-reset status on arrival, then test downloads, disc reading, controller pairing, video output and network access before the return period expires.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using launch prices or old MSRP figures

Fix this by checking the retailer listing on the day you buy. Sony’s April 2, 2026 recommended prices and Microsoft’s August 1, 2026 increases establish official changes, not the price every store charges today.

Assuming digital means cheaper forever

Digital stores can have excellent sales, but you cannot shop used discs, lend a digital license in the same way or resell a download. Compare your normal buying pattern and storage expansion cost.

Assuming every older game works

Use title-by-title compatibility checks. Sony’s figure of more than 8,500 playable PS4 games and Microsoft’s thousands of games across four generations are broad totals, not universal guarantees.

Comparing Series S and Series X as identical hardware

They have different storage options, disc support and stated resolution targets. Treat Series S as a digital, 1440p-oriented budget model, not simply a discounted Series X.

Ignoring renewal prices

Record the ordinary regional subscription price and renewal date. A temporary promotion should not determine a multi-year ownership calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying an expansion accessory without checking compatibility

Match the accessory to the exact console generation and model. Add its price before declaring a smaller-capacity console the bargain.

Bottom line

When prices are high, choose by total cost and library fit rather than brand loyalty. A disc-equipped PS5 or Xbox Series X is the safer choice for physical games, used purchases and Blu-ray discs. Compare PS5 and Series X around the titles your household wants and the display you own. Consider PS5 Digital Edition or Series S only when an all-digital library is acceptable; Series S also makes a deliberate trade-off in resolution and hardware capability. Verify current local prices, subscription terms, storage needs and refurbished warranty conditions immediately before paying.
