A 165Hz screen can make supported games and on-screen motion look smoother, but keeping a phone locked at 165Hz can reduce battery life. If you want both options, adaptive refresh is often the practical middle ground: the display can rise when smoothness helps and lower its rate when it does not. The trade-off depends on the phone and how you use it, so treat any runtime figure as specific to its device and test.
What 165Hz means—and what it does not
Refresh rate describes how often a display can update its image each second. A 165Hz panel can refresh up to 165 times per second, which can make compatible games and scrolling feel smoother than on a lower-refresh screen. It does not mean every app displays 165 frames per second: the app, game, graphics hardware, and display settings all affect what you actually see.

Also distinguish a phone that supports a maximum of 165Hz from one that is set to hold that rate. Some displays adjust their refresh rate automatically. For example, the ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro information sheet specifies a 165Hz AMOLED LTPO display with adaptive refresh support, alongside a 5,500mAh dual-battery design. That specification shows that a high maximum and adaptive operation can coexist; it does not establish the phone’s real-world battery runtime. How much battery can fixed 165Hz use?
One useful same-phone comparison comes from Tom’s Guide’s 2026 ASUS ROG Phone 9 Pro battery test: the phone lasted 20 hours 34 minutes with adaptive refresh and 15 hours 41 minutes when locked to 165Hz. The difference was 4 hours 53 minutes in that test. Tom’s Guide says its primary battery ranking uses default settings and that it tests alternate refresh settings when high-refresh options are available. These results describe that phone under that review’s procedure, not a standard battery penalty for every 165Hz phone. Battery results also depend on factors such as brightness, network conditions, software, and workload. Battery capacity in mAh is useful context, but it cannot by itself tell you how long a phone will last. A manufacturer playback claim is not directly comparable to a review’s battery test unless the conditions and method match.
When to favor 165Hz
Choose the higher rate when smoothness matters to you
A 165Hz option is most compelling if you regularly play games that support high frame rates and notice the difference in motion. Check that the specific games you play can use a high frame rate and that the phone’s settings allow it; a 165Hz panel alone does not guarantee a game will render at 165 frames per second.

Consider how often you can charge
If you usually have access to a charger and place a high value on supported games or especially fluid interaction, the extra power use of a fixed high refresh setting may be an acceptable compromise. If your day regularly runs long, weigh independent battery tests more heavily than the headline refresh-rate specification.

When adaptive refresh is the better fit
Adaptive refresh suits people who want the option of smoother motion without holding the screen at its maximum rate all the time. The exact behavior and settings vary by phone, so check the manufacturer’s specifications and available display controls rather than assuming every adaptive display works the same way.
Adaptive refresh is not exclusive to 165Hz phones. Nothing says the Phone (4a) adjusts its adaptive refresh rate from 30Hz to 120Hz to balance fluid motion with power saving. How to compare phones before buying
- Check the refresh behavior. Confirm the maximum rate, whether refresh is adaptive, and whether the phone offers a fixed high-refresh setting.
- Find battery results for the exact model. Prefer an independent review that identifies its settings and test method. Note whether its main result uses default or adaptive refresh, or a fixed rate.
- Match the evidence to your use. Gaming, video playback, browsing, messaging, and standby are different workloads. A test under one workload is not a guarantee for another.
- Use capacity and charging as context. Compare battery capacity and charging options, but do not treat either as a substitute for runtime testing.
- Decide which compromise you prefer. If you value the smoothest supported gaming, try the high-refresh setting and monitor your own use. If time between charges matters more, use adaptive refresh or a lower setting when available.
How to read manufacturer battery claims
Manufacturer specifications can help identify a phone’s capabilities, but distinguish those claims from independent, like-for-like runtime tests. OnePlus lists the OnePlus 15 with a 6.78-inch LTPO 1.5K display that dynamically refreshes up to 165Hz, a 7,300mAh battery, and up to 31 hours of video playback. The playback figure is a manufacturer claim, not an independent head-to-head comparison; check the market configuration and test conditions before comparing it with another phone’s result.
