Choose a 192 GB target only when a specific workload—such as a larger model, longer context, concurrent requests, or other memory-heavy apps—exceeds what fits at 128 GB. More capacity can make a workload possible; it does not, by itself, make inference faster.
What the extra 64 GB changes—and what it does not
192 GB is 64 GB more than 128 GB, or 50% more nominal capacity. That can matter when memory is the constraint: it may let you keep a larger active model in memory, allocate more memory to context, run multiple models or requests, or leave more room for other applications.

Capacity is not a performance ranking. Tokens per second and time to first token also depend on the chip, memory bandwidth, accelerator support, runtime, quantization, context length, and concurrency. A system with more memory is not automatically faster than a 128 GB system.

Apple explains that traditional dense and sparsely activated language models require their weights in active DRAM. Its AFM 3 Core Advanced architecture instead stores the full model in flash and selectively loads experts into DRAM; that vendor-described approach should not be assumed to apply to arbitrary downloaded models. Apple’s explanation of AFM 3 Core Advanced describes both the memory constraint and its selective-loading design.

How to decide for your workload
| 128 GB is likely sufficient when… | A 192 GB target may be justified when… |
|---|---|
| Your documented or measured peak use—including model, context, runtime, and other active apps—fits with headroom. | Your intended peak workload exceeds the memory budget available at 128 GB. |
| You generally run one model at a time and do not need unusually long context or heavy parallel work. | A particular model, context length, parallel workload, or set of simultaneous applications needs more active memory. |
| The system’s chip, memory bandwidth, and software support suit your workload. | You have verified that a system with 192 GB is actually available and that its chip and other characteristics meet your needs. |
Do not plan to consume every advertised gigabyte. Model weights are only part of the workload: context-related cache, runtime allocations, the operating system, and other open applications also use memory. The required reserve depends on what else the machine must do, so there is no single headroom figure that fits every setup.
Estimate the memory you will actually need
- Specify the workload. Record the model and quantization, runtime, target context length, expected simultaneous requests or models, and the applications that need to stay open.
- Find an estimate for that combination. Prefer a published memory requirement for the exact model and configuration. A model’s parameter count alone does not establish its memory footprint.
- Measure peak use if you can. Test on comparable hardware with the intended runtime, context, and concurrency. Leave room for the operating system and applications rather than treating all installed memory as available to the model.
- Compare the rest of the system. Check memory bandwidth and GPU or accelerator support alongside capacity. If the complete workload fits comfortably in 128 GB, the evidence here does not support choosing 192 GB solely because the capacity number is larger.
What current Apple configurations illustrate
Apple’s current MacBook Pro specifications list M5 Max configurations with up to 128 GB of unified memory. The listed bandwidth can reach 614 GB/s depending on GPU configuration. This is an example of a portable 128 GB system, not evidence of a 192 GB MacBook Pro configuration.

Apple’s August 25, 2026 Mac Studio announcement lists M5 Ultra systems with up to 512 GB of unified memory and 1.2 TB/s of memory bandwidth. Those are maximum specification claims, not a 192 GB configuration or an independent performance test. Check the exact system and SKU before treating either capacity as an available option.
Why runtime and model behavior matter
A comparative study by Varun Rajesh and coauthors tested local inference on an M2 Ultra Mac Studio with 192 GB of unified memory. In the study’s reported settings, MLX delivered the highest sustained generation throughput; MLC-LLM had lower time to first token for moderate prompts and stronger out-of-box inference features; llama.cpp was efficient for lightweight single-stream use; Ollama emphasized ergonomics but lagged on throughput and time to first token; and PyTorch MPS had limitations with large models and long contexts. These results describe that study’s setup, not a universal runtime ranking or a controlled comparison of the same workload on 128 GB and 192 GB systems. Read the study abstract.

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Software can also affect memory use through its allocation and cache behavior. Ollama’s preview post describes an Apple Silicon implementation using MLX and unified memory, and reports a benchmark run on March 29, 2026, using Qwen3.5-35B-A3B in specified quantizations. Its instruction to use a Mac with more than 32 GB of unified memory applies to that preview workflow; it is not a general minimum for local AI. Ollama’s post and benchmark details are useful context for that specific implementation.

Start with the model and workload, not the memory number. If your real configuration fits within 128 GB with room for the operating system and other applications, prioritize the chip, bandwidth, and software support that suit your use. Consider 192 GB when you can identify and verify a capacity limit that the additional memory solves—and confirm that the system you are considering actually offers it.
