They reorganize related information across the extra width, keep your task intact when you move between the cover and unfolded displays, and remain practical when resized beside another app. Evaluate those behaviors in the device, window sizes and workflows you actually use.
Use tablet- and foldable-focused app collections to find candidates, but treat every listing as a starting point. Compatibility can differ by app version, device, operating-system version, region and window arrangement, while partly folded (Flex) behavior must be checked separately.

What “wide-screen ready” should mean
A foldable’s unfolded panel can offer substantially more usable width than its cover display. That space helps only when an app changes its composition to show more useful information at once. A phone layout that simply stretches controls and text can leave large empty areas, force excessive scrolling or make controls harder to reach.
Look for a reflowed layout, not a stretched phone view
Android’s foldable guidance uses a landscape example: a two-pane layout with a navigation rail makes excellent use of a wide screen. In practical terms, a good layout might keep a navigation list visible beside message content, show a document outline next to the page, or place a media browser beside the selected item. The exact arrangement depends on the app, but the principle is consistent: the extra width should expose related content or controls that would otherwise be hidden behind navigation.

Continuity is part of quality
Continuity means your task and state survive a display change. If you begin composing on the cover, unfolding should leave the same draft open at the same place. Folding during a search, edit or playback session should not unexpectedly discard the current item, reset a form or send you to a generic home screen. Android states that apps should preserve and restore state seamlessly during these transitions, and developer guidance for foldables describes the display-area changes that occur while folding and unfolding.
Resizing matters as much as unfolding
Many owners use a foldable as a small multitasking workstation. An app that looks excellent full-screen can become awkward when narrowed beside a browser, notes app or chat window. Check whether its content reflows at the widths you intend to use, whether controls remain available and whether essential text is clipped or replaced by horizontal scrolling.
Android’s guidance covers resizable multi-window use. On large screens running Android 12 or later, the platform supports multi-window regardless of an app’s configuration, so an app can be placed beside another even when its developer did not optimize every arrangement. That platform capability does not guarantee a good visual result; the app still has to handle the resulting size gracefully.

A partly folded device introduces a different posture from either display. Flex mode behavior varies by app, so do not infer it from full-screen performance. If you plan to use the device propped on a table, verify what the app places in the upper and lower regions, whether controls remain usable and whether the app offers any posture-specific treatment.
Also evaluate inputs that matter to your workflow. Android’s adaptive quality considerations include stylus use and drag and drop where applicable. An app may have an excellent wide layout yet fail your needs if handwriting, object dragging or touch selection behaves poorly at the sizes you use.

How to find candidates without confusing discovery with proof
Google Play provides tablet- and foldable-specific collections and recommendations. These collections can reduce the effort of finding apps that at least claim to address larger displays, but placement is not a guarantee of continuity, resizing quality or Flex mode support.
- Start with the store’s tablet or foldable collection relevant to your device.
- Filter the list to the tasks you actually perform, such as writing, file handling, communication, media or planning.
- Install only a small set of candidates for each task so that you can compare them under the same conditions.
- Run the same workflow and window arrangements in every candidate rather than relying on screenshots or a feature list.
For apps you already depend on, skip the assumption that a collection label settles the question. Existing apps deserve the same hands-on checks because your data, habits and required integrations make their real behavior more important than a store category.
A repeatable evaluation procedure
Use one realistic task per app. A genuine task reveals failures that a quick launch will miss and gives you a consistent basis for comparing alternatives.
1. Define the workflow and success conditions
Write down what “working well” means before you test. For a mail app, that might be selecting a message from a list, reading it and replying. For a document editor, it could be opening a file, editing several paragraphs and switching to a reference app. Include any stylus, drag-and-drop or attachment steps you perform regularly.
- The task starts on the cover display or the unfolded display.
- You need to fold or unfold at a particular point.
- You expect to place the app beside another app.
- You use a stylus, external pointer or drag-and-drop operation.
- You sometimes work with the device partly folded.
2. Establish the cover-screen baseline
Open the app on the cover display and begin the task. Note the item you opened, your position in a document or list, unsent text, selected filters and any other state that should persist. This baseline gives you something precise to verify after each posture change.

- Are related controls visible without obscuring the main content?
- Does the app preserve unsent work, selections, playback position or form entries?
- Do text and touch targets remain comfortable at the new size?
4. Fold back to the cover
Repeat the transition in the opposite direction. Fold while viewing the same item, then verify that the app returns to the relevant content instead of restarting or dropping your place. Try this after making a change, such as editing text or applying a filter, because state-loss bugs may appear only after an interaction.
5. Test the exact multi-window arrangement you expect
Place the app beside another app and adjust the divider through several positions. Begin with the width you expect to use most often, then make the app narrower until a layout change occurs.
- Open the app in split-screen or another available multi-window arrangement.
- Choose a companion app that represents your real use, such as a browser for research or a notes app for copying information.
- Drag the divider and observe whether panes reflow, collapse sensibly or become unusable.
- Activate the main controls in the narrowed state; do not judge only by appearance.
- Switch focus between apps and return to the first one to confirm that its task and scroll position remain intact.
Android 12 and later support multi-window on large screens regardless of an app’s configuration. That makes this test worthwhile even when the app does not advertise foldable support.
6. Check partly folded use separately
Put the device in the partly folded posture you use. Look for clear separation between viewing and controls, reliable touch input and sensible placement of frequently used actions. If the app behaves exactly like its flat layout, decide whether that is acceptable for your routine; do not assume that a generic Flex mode claim implies a useful implementation.

7. Exercise specialized inputs
Use the stylus, drag-and-drop gesture or other input only if it is part of your workflow, but test it in the same window sizes. A gesture that works full-screen may be difficult when the app is narrowed, and a stylus tool may move when the layout changes.
Compare apps on four decision axes
A simple scorecard keeps an attractive full-screen layout from hiding a serious continuity or multitasking problem. Rate each candidate using the evidence from your own workflow.
| Axis | What to examine | Strong result | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use of unfolded width | Whether the app reorganizes information instead of stretching a phone view | Two related panes, a navigation rail or another arrangement that reduces navigation overhead | Large empty margins, oversized single-column content or controls spread too far apart |
| Continuity | State during cover-to-unfold and unfold-to-cover transitions | The same item, position, edits and selections are present after the change | Restarted screen, lost draft, reset filter or unexpected return to a home view |
| Resizable multitasking | Behavior beside another app and at your intended widths | Content reflows, controls remain available and focus returns without losing place | Clipped content, inaccessible actions, forced horizontal scrolling or unusable narrow mode |
| Posture and inputs | Flex mode plus stylus or drag-and-drop features you actually need | Partly folded controls are clear and required inputs remain reliable | Unusable split regions, misplaced controls or failed gestures |
Weight the axes according to the task. Continuity should dominate for an app handling drafts or transactions; width usage may matter most for research or file management; posture support matters only if you regularly work partly folded. An app does not need a perfect score in an irrelevant category, but a failure in a category central to your workflow is a reason to reject it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret common outcomes
Excellent full-screen, poor split-screen
Keep the app only if you use it almost exclusively unfolded and alone. If your routine depends on reference material or side-by-side copying, the narrow-state failure will cost more time than the attractive full-screen layout saves.
Good layout, unreliable continuity
For disposable browsing, a restart may be tolerable. For editing, composing, filling forms or managing a long process, lost state is a critical defect. Look for a different app or change the workflow so that display transitions occur before you begin the task.
Best Value
Plain layout, dependable behavior
A single-column interface can still be the practical choice when it preserves state, resizes cleanly and keeps all controls accessible. Wide-screen reorganization is valuable, but reliability in the operations you perform should decide the final choice.
Useful Flex mode, limited flat-screen adaptation
This can suit a narrow use case, such as hands-free viewing on a table, but it does not compensate for a poor unfolded or split-screen experience if those are your primary modes.
Troubleshoot before replacing an app
The app resets after folding or unfolding
- Repeat the transition after saving or submitting the current step to distinguish state loss from an unsaved-work limitation.
- Try both directions and at different points in the same task.
- Record whether the reset occurs only in a particular window size or posture.
- Check the app again after updating it, because behavior can change with app and system versions.
Controls disappear in split-screen
- Widen the app slightly and see whether a responsive breakpoint restores the controls.
- Look for an overflow menu or compact navigation pattern.
- Test a different divider position that matches your real use rather than judging only at the narrowest width.
The unfolded view feels empty or awkward
- Look for a tablet-style setting, navigation-rail option or alternate orientation if the app provides one.
- Compare the same task in portrait and landscape orientations supported by your device.
- Decide whether the extra width actually reduces steps; if it does not, treat the app as a cover-screen or single-window tool.
Flex mode is inconsistent
Verify that the behavior is specific to the app and posture rather than a general device setting. Because compatibility varies by app, an inconsistent result is evidence about that particular candidate, not proof that every app will behave the same way.
Account for version, device and region differences
App behavior is not fixed across every foldable. The app version, device model, operating-system version, region and exact window arrangement can all affect the result. A recommendation from another user may therefore be a useful lead rather than a guarantee for your setup.
Recheck critical apps after a major app or system update, after changing devices and whenever your multitasking habits change. Store collections and platform guidance can also change, so use them for discovery while keeping your own workflow test as the final authority.
Printable wide-foldable app checklist
- Does the unfolded layout show more related information, or merely stretch a phone screen?
- Can you see and reach the controls needed for your task?
- Does the same item, draft, selection and position survive unfolding?
- Does folding return you to the relevant state on the cover display?
- Can the app sit beside your usual companion app?
- What happens when you move the divider through the widths you actually use?
- Are essential controls available without clipping or forced horizontal scrolling?
- Does partly folded use help your routine, and are its controls clear?
- Do stylus and drag-and-drop actions work where you need them?
- Have you tested the current app and system versions on your own device?
Bottom-line selection rule
Choose the app that preserves your real task while making the unfolded width useful and the resized window dependable. Use store collections to build a shortlist, then verify layout, continuity, multitasking, posture and relevant inputs in that order of importance to you. No collection badge can replace testing the app in the exact display changes and window arrangements you plan to use.
