Choose by the whole system—subwoofer and rear speakers, Atmos design, connections, supported formats, and fit—not by channel count alone. This guide explains what to check before buying and how to set it up; it does not claim personal soundbar testing.
What a soundbar can—and cannot—do
A soundbar combines multiple speaker drivers in one long enclosure, usually with a simpler setup than separate front, center, and surround speakers. Some systems add a separate subwoofer or wireless rear speakers. The compact form is useful when minimizing equipment matters, while a properly arranged multi-speaker system can provide greater physical separation and immersion. What Hi-Fi?’s soundbar guide discusses this trade-off alongside the features buyers should compare.

Channel labels are a starting point, not a guarantee of a particular experience. A configuration may include separate drivers for dialogue, surround effects, or height effects, but room layout, speaker placement, supported audio formats, and included components all matter. Confirm exactly what comes in the box: a subwoofer or rear speakers may be included, optional, or absent.

- System configuration: Note the channel layout and whether the subwoofer and rear speakers are included or sold separately. Include any required additions when comparing total system cost.
- Atmos approach and room: Determine whether height effects come from physical up-firing drivers or virtualization. Up-firing drivers need an unobstructed path to a reflective ceiling; virtualization simulates overhead sound using listener-level speakers. They are different approaches, and neither guarantees the same result in every room.
- Formats: Check support for the audio formats used by your streaming services, discs, games, and other sources. The source device, TV, soundbar, and content all need a compatible signal path for a format such as Dolby Atmos.
- Connections: Check for HDMI eARC/ARC, HDMI inputs, optical, and Bluetooth as relevant to your equipment. Confirm which ports pass the formats you want and whether your TV has the matching ARC/eARC port.
- Physical fit: Compare the bar’s width and height with the space in front of or below the TV. Make sure furniture or a cabinet does not block drivers, and that the bar does not cover the TV’s screen or remote sensor.
- Sources and controls: Consider whether you need music streaming, Bluetooth playback, or particular control options, rather than paying attention only to movie features.
- Upgrade path: If rear speakers are optional, verify that compatible additions are available for the exact model and region before treating them as a future upgrade.
Samsung’s soundbar buying guide also identifies channels, formats, fit, and connections as selection factors. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and manual for the exact model and regional bundle before ordering.
A current example to verify: Hisense AX5125H
The What Hi-Fi? guide lists the Hisense AX5125H and specifies HDMI eARC, HDMI-in, optical, and Bluetooth connections, with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support. Those listed features make it a candidate to investigate if those connections and formats match your setup; they are not a claim of personal testing, a recommendation based on comparative measurements, or confirmation of current stock, price, or the package available in your region. Check the seller and Hisense’s regional product information for the exact model designation and included components.

Enjoy seamless OTA updates that unlock new features and keep your system performing at its peak.
What you need for Dolby Atmos playback
Atmos playback depends on the complete chain, not just the soundbar. You need compatible hardware and settings along the route from the content to the bar, as well as a title and service that provide Atmos. A TV app, streaming device, game console, or other player may send audio through the TV or connect to the soundbar’s HDMI input; the right route depends on the specific devices and their manuals.
- Confirm the soundbar supports Dolby Atmos.
- Confirm the TV or playback device can pass Atmos over the connection you plan to use.
- Check that the service and specific movie or show offer Atmos, and select the Atmos audio track when more than one is available.
- Enable the relevant audio output setting on the TV or player, then check the soundbar’s display or app for the incoming format if it provides that information.
Sony’s Atmos support instructions identify the compatible TV, supported service and content, selected Atmos track, and TV audio-output setting as requirements for TV-streamed Atmos. Menu names and signal capabilities vary by model.

With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 95 dB, it reproduces clear dialogue, detailed mids, and impactful bass for movies, music, and gaming.
Connect the soundbar to the TV
For an ARC/eARC connection, the usual arrangement is the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (eARC/ARC) port to the TV’s HDMI IN port marked eARC or ARC. A playback device can connect to the TV or, if appropriate for the equipment and signal path, to the soundbar’s HDMI IN. Use the manuals for the TV, soundbar, and source device to confirm the ports and supported formats; an HDMI port without ARC/eARC is not the same connection.
- Find the matching ports. Locate HDMI OUT eARC/ARC on the soundbar and HDMI IN eARC/ARC on the TV. Use those ports for the TV-to-soundbar link.
- Connect the cable. Connect the two marked ports, then connect source devices to the TV or soundbar according to the device manuals and the formats you need to pass.
- Select the TV’s external audio output. In the TV sound settings, choose the soundbar or audio system and enable the appropriate ARC/eARC and audio-format options. Exact menu labels vary.
- Choose the correct source. Select the TV input or soundbar input used by the playback device, then play content and confirm sound comes from the bar.
- Verify Atmos when relevant. Use a known Atmos title and select its Atmos track. Check the TV/player output settings and the soundbar’s format indicator if playback is not recognized as Atmos.
Sony’s connection guidance shows the soundbar HDMI OUT eARC/ARC connected to the TV’s HDMI IN eARC/ARC, while noting that a playback device may connect to either the TV or soundbar depending on the system. Check each device manual before buying a cable: the suitable cable depends on the required signal and bandwidth, and a compatible one may already be included.

Place the bar and subwoofer for your room
Position an Atmos soundbar
For a soundbar with physical up-firing Atmos drivers, placement affects whether reflected height effects can reach the listening area. Dolby recommends mounting the bar at or slightly above seated ear level, leaving the upward-firing drivers unobstructed, and avoiding an enclosed cabinet or a position beneath a soffit. Dolby identifies a flat, reflective ceiling about 7.5–12 feet (2.3–3.66 m) high as ideal for this design. Those are placement recommendations, not a guarantee that every room will produce the same effect. Dolby’s Atmos soundbar setup guide explains the placement and design considerations.

Find a useful subwoofer position
Start with the subwoofer near the soundbar and TV, then move it and listen for the best response in your room. A cabinet can impair bass or introduce rattling and distortion; changing the subwoofer’s distance from walls can also change bass response. Dolby’s soundbar setup guide recommends trying positions rather than assuming one location will work in every room.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- No sound from the TV: Confirm the cable connects the soundbar’s HDMI OUT ARC/eARC port to the TV’s matching HDMI IN ARC/eARC port. Check that the TV is set to external audio and that the soundbar is on the correct input.
- Sound works, but Atmos does not: Verify Atmos support across the soundbar, TV or player, connection path, service, and title. Enable the TV’s audio-output setting and select the Atmos track where available.
- Height effects seem weak: If the bar has up-firing drivers, check that they are not blocked or enclosed and that the ceiling is suitable for reflected sound. A virtualized design does not use the same physical reflection path.
- Bass is boomy, weak, or rattling: Move the subwoofer away from an enclosing cabinet and try another position relative to the walls and bar. Recheck for loose or vibrating objects nearby.
- A source does not pass the desired format: Test an alternate route—through the TV or through the soundbar’s HDMI IN—only if the manuals confirm that route supports the source format. A port label by itself does not establish every device’s format capabilities.
