How to Choose and Flash an Armbian Image for an Allwinner H618 Board

Identify your exact board and revision before downloading Armbian. H618 identifies a processor family, not a universal board image: an image for the Orange Pi Zero 3, for example, should not be assumed to work on another H618 board. Choose the exact supported board in Armbian Imager, write its offered image to a microSD card, and wait for verification before booting.

Which Armbian image is right for my H618 board?

Start with the board’s printed model and revision, then compare that identity with Armbian’s board listing or the name shown in Armbian Imager. Do not choose an image merely because its description mentions H618 or a related H616 model.

The Orange Pi Zero 3 is one documented H618 example. Its manual identifies the Allwinner H618, while Armbian’s board configuration names the board “Orange Pi Zero3” and uses the identifier orangepizero3. That board-specific configuration does not establish that every H618 board or revision has an official image. See the Orange Pi Zero 3 board page and its Armbian board configuration.

  • If your exact board is selectable in Armbian Imager, choose it rather than a similar-looking model.
  • If it is not listed, check the exact board’s current Armbian support and boot instructions. Do not substitute another H618 image based only on the shared SoC.
  • Board revision can matter. Check the board label and revision against the image’s stated target before writing the card.

Armbian’s image-selection guidance recommends using Armbian Imager for supported hardware: select the board, download the appropriate image, and flash it in one workflow. Availability and supported kernel branches can change, so use the live listing for your exact board.

Choose the system and kernel for your use

First decide whether you want a graphical desktop or a command-line system, then choose among the kernel branches actually offered for your board. These labels describe general Armbian image options; not every combination is necessarily available for every board.

Choice What it means When it fits
Ubuntu or Debian Armbian supports both families; its guidance recommends Ubuntu if you have no particular preference or requirement. Choose based on your software needs or existing familiarity.
Minimal A lightweight command-line system with a bare minimum of packages and no graphical environment. For a small headless setup where you will add only what you need.
Server A command-line image with standard utilities and no graphical environment. For typical headless server use.
Desktop A full graphical environment. When you plan to use the board with a display and graphical applications.
Current Follows the latest Linux mainline LTS kernel. The usual starting point when offered for the exact board.
Vendor Uses a kernel provided by the board vendor; it may support more hardware but have older package versions and fewer general fixes. Consider it when a feature you need is not working with another offered branch.
Edge A development/latest kernel line that is automatically tested but may break. For experienced users or testing, not a low-maintenance installation.
Legacy An older stable kernel. When Current is unavailable or a device you need does not work on Current.

Armbian explains these options in its Getting Started guide. Kernel support depends on the board family, so a feature working on one H618 board does not prove that it will work on another.

Check a manual download before flashing

If you download an image yourself, use the exact board’s official Armbian download page. The compressed image is typically a .img.xz file; the page may also provide a .sha checksum file and a .asc signature file. Follow the live page’s filename, checksum, and key instructions because these details can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A SHA-256 checksum can help detect a corrupted or incomplete download.
  • A GPG signature can help authenticate the published image when verified using Armbian’s instructions.

Armbian Imager can download and verify official images as part of the writing process, so manual download is optional. See Armbian’s image-selection and verification guidance.

Prepare a suitable microSD card and power supply

Armbian’s general SD-card guidance recommends a reputable card rated A1 or A2, at least UHS-I U3/V30, and 32 GB or larger. These are general recommendations, not a verified minimum for every H618 board. Armbian notes that A2 is not slower or less supported than A1 when command queuing is unused.

  • For continuous logging or other write-heavy use, choose a high-endurance card intended for dashcams or CCTV.
  • Buy from a reputable seller; counterfeit or unreliable cards can cause capacity and stability problems.
  • To check a new or suspicious card, Armbian suggests F3 on Linux or macOS, or H2testw on Windows. These checks write data to the card, so back up anything on it first.
  • Use a power supply that meets the board manufacturer’s requirements. A USB card reader is needed only if your computer lacks a suitable built-in card writer.

How do I flash Armbian to a microSD card?

  1. Install and open Armbian Imager. Use Armbian’s Imager guide for the current download and instructions for your computer.
  2. Select the exact board. Choose your board in the Imager. If you already downloaded an image, select the local or custom-image option and use only a file verified for that board.
  3. Select the target card carefully. Confirm that the destination is the microSD card, not a computer system disk or another drive. Imager includes safeguards against selecting system disks accidentally, but verify the target yourself.
  4. Start the write and wait for verification. Do not remove the card or interrupt the process while the image is being written and checked. Imager supports local .img, .img.xz, and custom images as well as downloads.
  5. Safely eject the card, insert it into the board, and power on. Follow the board manufacturer’s instructions for the microSD slot and power connection.

Armbian recommends Imager because its verification and target-selection safeguards help catch incomplete writes, faulty cards, and reader problems. See the Armbian Imager documentation.

If the board does not boot

Check the most basic causes first, in this order:

  1. Confirm that the image name matches the exact board and revision.
  2. Check that the write and verification completed; if in doubt, write the image again or test the card.
  3. Confirm that the card is fully inserted and that the power supply meets the manufacturer’s requirements.
  4. Follow the current troubleshooting instructions for your exact board rather than another H618 model.

A serial console can help diagnose a failure that these checks do not resolve. Use the connector, voltage, and pinout specified by the board’s own manual; do not assume serial connections are interchangeable. The Orange Pi Zero 3 board page links to its board-specific resources.

Move the system to internal storage only if you need to

Booting from the microSD card does not automatically install Armbian to eMMC, NAND, SATA, USB, or another internal or attached drive. After the system boots, Armbian’s armbian-install tool can offer layouts such as booting from SD with the system on SATA or USB, booting from eMMC or NAND, and booting from SPI with the system on SATA, USB, or NVMe. It can also offer bootloader installation or updates on supported media.
