Choose an XRP Ledger wallet by deciding who controls the secret keys, how those keys are stored, and what happens if you lose access. A custodial service holds the keys and may offer password resets or support; a non-custodial wallet leaves the keys with you and leaves recovery entirely your responsibility. After funding an account, verify receipt with its public address in a reputable XRP Ledger explorer or through the read-only account_info method. Never enter a seed, secret key, or recovery phrase to view a balance.
This distinction matters because, as XRP Ledger’s Secure Signing documentation states, “All transactions, balances, and data in the XRP Ledger are public.” Reading public data does not require authorizing a transaction.

Start with custody: who controls the keys?
A wallet is not simply an app that displays an XRP balance. It is the way you access the cryptographic keys that can authorize transactions from an XRP Ledger account. The first decision is whether a provider controls those keys for you or whether you control them directly.
Custodial wallets
With a custodial account, a company holds the secret keys. You normally sign in with a password or other account credentials, and the provider may provide password resets, account support, fraud monitoring, or an internal recovery process. That convenience comes with dependence on the provider’s security, solvency, policies, and ability to process withdrawals.

A custodial service may pool customer funds in one or more ledger accounts. In that arrangement, your account at the service is not necessarily a separately controlled XRP Ledger account whose keys you possess. The provider’s records determine your displayed balance, while the underlying ledger account may be shared.
Non-custodial wallets
A non-custodial wallet gives you control of the secret key or recovery material. You approve transactions yourself, and the provider cannot reset your key. The trade-off is explicit in the XRP Ledger Crypto Wallets documentation: “If you lose your keys, you are locked out of your XRP Ledger account and there are no recovery options.”
Choose non-custody when direct control and independent verification matter more than support-desk recovery. Treat the recovery phrase or secret key as the account’s ultimate authority: anyone who obtains it can generally attempt to spend the account’s funds, while losing it can make the account permanently inaccessible.

- Prefer custodial access if you need password recovery, assisted support, or a familiar account-login model and accept provider risk.
- Prefer non-custodial access if you want to hold the signing keys and check the account directly on the public ledger.
- Use extra caution with custodians when a service does not clearly explain withdrawal controls, account ownership, security practices, or whether balances are held in pooled accounts.
Hardware versus software key storage
The second choice is where the keys are stored and used. XRP Ledger’s wallet guidance contrasts hardware wallets, which keep keys on a physical device that can be disconnected from the internet, with software wallets, which are easier to access and may expose more features. This is a trade-off, not a guarantee that one category is always safe.
| Wallet approach | Key location and access | Advantages | Responsibilities and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial account | The provider holds the signing keys; you use the provider’s login or withdrawal flow. | Password reset or support may be available; convenient for frequent use. | You depend on the provider’s security and policies. Funds may be represented in pooled ledger accounts. |
| Non-custodial software wallet | Keys are controlled through an application on a phone or computer. | Direct control, quick access, and potentially broad wallet features. | You must protect the recovery material, device, and application. Lost keys have no provider recovery path. |
| Non-custodial hardware wallet | Keys remain on a physical device that can be disconnected from the internet. | Separates signing keys from an everyday computer or phone and can reduce exposure to online malware. | You still need a secure backup and must review every transaction. Confirm current XRP Ledger compatibility and integration before buying or relying on a device. |
Do not assume that every hardware device supports XRP Ledger, that a device prevents phishing, or that it makes a transaction safe merely because the key is offline. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility list, the wallet software’s supported signing flow, and the official purchase channel. A hardware device can protect a key while a user is tricked into approving a malicious destination or amount.

What to compare before selecting a specific wallet
- Custody: identify the legal and technical party that controls the signing key.
- Recovery: determine whether recovery is a provider password reset, a wallet backup, or nothing if the key is lost.
- Storage: establish whether the key is held by a service, an application, or a dedicated device.
- XRPL support: verify current network support, signing behavior, destination-tag handling, and any features you need.
- Independent checking: make sure you can inspect the public account and transactions without signing in or revealing secrets.
- Transparency: read the provider’s custody terms, security documentation, update history, and incident procedures.
Official XRP Ledger documentation names Xaman as an example of a non-custodial wallet. That mention is an example rather than a blanket recommendation. Confirm the app’s current publisher, custody terms, supported features, and download source at the time you install it.
Set up a wallet without surrendering the keys
- Obtain the software or device from an authentic source. Use the wallet maker’s current official distribution channel. Compare the publisher name and application details; a convincing copy can be designed to steal recovery material.
- Generate or import the account only inside the wallet’s trusted interface. Do not paste a recovery phrase into a website, chat, form, browser extension, or support conversation.
- Record the backup offline. Follow the wallet’s instructions for its recovery phrase or secret key. Keep the backup away from photographs, cloud notes, email, and shared password managers unless you have deliberately assessed those risks.
- Check the displayed public address. An XRP Ledger address is case-sensitive, is usually base58-encoded, and commonly begins with
r. Compare the complete string, not just its first and last few characters. - Protect the daily access path. Use a strong device passcode, keep the operating system and wallet updated, and treat unexpected “verification” or “support” messages as potential phishing.
- Test with a small amount when appropriate. Before a large transfer, confirm that the receiving account, destination-tag requirements, and wallet display behave as expected. A small test does not make an incorrect address reversible, so review the details first.
Understand what an XRP Ledger balance represents
An XRP Ledger account is represented on-ledger by an AccountRoot entry. Its Balance field is returned as a string in drops, while wallets and explorers commonly present a human-readable XRP amount. The ledger value is the authoritative record; a wallet display is an interface to that record.
The total balance is not necessarily the amount you can spend. XRP Ledger documentation currently states a 1 XRP reserve requirement for an account. Reserve values can change, so check the live Accounts documentation when making a funding decision. The reserve is set aside to keep the account and its ledger objects active. Additional account objects or obligations can affect what is available for a payment.
- Total balance: the amount recorded in the account’s
AccountRoot. - Reserve: XRP that must remain set aside under the current ledger rules.
- Spendable amount: what remains after the reserve and any other ledger obligations are considered.
If an explorer shows a balance that differs from a wallet, first check that both are displaying the same account address and ledger state. Then determine whether one display is showing total XRP while the other is subtracting reserve or pending obligations.
Verify that an incoming XRP payment arrived
Use the public account address for a read-only check. XRP Ledger’s peer-to-peer payment guidance recommends verifying on the ledger that the account exists and is funded, using an XRP Ledger Explorer or the account_info method.

Explorer method
- Copy the receiving address from a trusted record. Obtain it from the wallet’s receive screen or the intended recipient. Preserve capitalization.
- Open a reputable XRP Ledger Explorer. Use the explorer’s account search, not a link supplied in an unsolicited message.
- Paste the complete address. Confirm that the result’s address exactly matches the one you intended to fund.
- Read the account summary. Check the current XRP balance, account status, and recent transactions. Look for the incoming payment’s amount and ledger confirmation rather than relying on an email or screenshot.
- Review destination-tag information when relevant. An exchange or hosted service may require a destination tag to route a payment internally. The ledger can show that a payment reached the service’s account, while the service still needs the correct tag to credit your customer record.
account_info read-only method
Wallets, scripts, and XRPL tools can call the account_info method against a trusted public server to retrieve an account’s ledger data. Supply the public account address and request the current or explicitly selected ledger state. A typical request has the following shape:

The ellipsis in this example is not a value to submit: replace it with the complete address you are checking. Client libraries and server versions may format parameters differently, so use the syntax documented by the tool you trust. The response should identify the same account and expose its ledger balance in drops. Do not treat a successful response as permission to send funds; it is a read-only lookup.
What you should never provide for a balance check
- Secret keys or seeds
- Recovery phrases
- Private key files
- Wallet passwords or one-time authentication codes
- A transaction signature request when you only want to read data
A public explorer or read-only API has no legitimate need for those credentials. If a site asks you to “verify ownership” by entering a recovery phrase, close it. If a wallet opens a signing prompt during a balance lookup, stop and inspect what the transaction or authorization would do before approving anything.

Case-sensitive addresses
XRP Ledger addresses are case-sensitive. A one-character difference can identify a different account, and confirmed ledger payments are not normally reversible by a wallet provider. Copy the address directly where possible, then compare the full destination on the final confirmation screen.
X-addresses and destination tags
The XRPL documentation describes X-addresses, which can package an account destination and a destination tag together. Use the address format expected by the wallet, exchange, or service receiving the payment. If the recipient supplies a conventional address plus a separate tag, enter both fields exactly as supplied. Never invent a tag or reuse one from an earlier payment.

Domain verification
XRPL domain verification can associate an account with a domain through a domain-hosted xrp-ledger.toml file and an account Domain field. It is optional and intended to improve transparency. A verified domain is one identity signal; it is not proof that the recipient’s request is honest, that the destination is controlled by the person you expect, or that a payment can be reversed.
Common verification failures and safe responses
The explorer says the account does not exist
Check every character of the address and confirm that you are using the intended network. An unfunded address may not have an on-ledger account yet. Ask the sender for the transaction identifier and inspect the destination recorded in that transaction rather than repeatedly resending funds.
The payment is visible but the recipient has not credited it
Compare the destination tag, if one was required, with the tag used in the transaction. A hosted service may see the payment on its shared account but need the tag to assign it internally. Contact the service through its official support channel and provide the transaction details; never provide your secret key.
The wallet and explorer show different balances
Confirm that both are checking the same case-sensitive address and comparable ledger states. Determine whether the wallet is subtracting the reserve or other obligations while the explorer shows the total AccountRoot balance. If the discrepancy remains, export only public transaction information for support and keep all signing credentials private.

A site demands a recovery phrase to display a balance
Leave the site. Public ledger data can be read with an address alone. Report or block the source if it arrived through an unsolicited message, advertisement, or direct message.
A hardware wallet shows an unfamiliar destination
Do not approve the transaction. Verify the address on a trusted screen and investigate possible clipboard replacement malware, a compromised computer, or a malicious application. A hardware wallet protects the key from direct extraction; it cannot make an intentionally approved transaction safe.
Quick Recap
A repeatable pre-transfer checklist
- Confirm whether you are using a custodial or non-custodial arrangement.
- Verify that you have a tested, offline recovery method for any wallet whose keys you control.
- Check the wallet’s current XRP Ledger compatibility and signing support.
- Copy the complete, case-sensitive destination and compare it before approval.
- Enter the required destination tag or use a correctly formed X-address.
- Use an explorer or
account_infofor read-only confirmation; never share secret credentials. - Review the total balance separately from the reserve and other account obligations.
- Treat domain verification as supporting evidence, not a guarantee of intent or reversibility.
