Choose the Xbox Series X for physical Xbox games, UHD Blu-ray discs, or native 4K gaming; choose the Series S for an all-digital Xbox at a 1440p target; choose a Windows gaming PC for native PC games and configurable hardware. The best fit depends on your screen, game library, disc collection, storage needs, and whether you also need a general-purpose computer.
Which option fits your needs?
| Choose | Best fit when | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | You want a UHD Blu-ray drive, play physical Xbox games, or prioritize native 4K on a compatible display. | Series X is sold in different configurations; confirm the exact model’s disc drive and storage. |
| Xbox Series S | You are comfortable buying and playing digitally and are satisfied with a 1440p target with 4K upscaling. | Choose between the listed 512GB and 1TB SSD configurations based on the size of your installed library. It cannot play disc-based games. |
| Windows gaming PC | You want native PC games, hardware flexibility, or one machine for gaming and general computing. | Choose components for the games, resolution, and settings you want. “Gaming PC” is not a fixed performance level. |
There is no universal winner: these options offer different capabilities, and the available evidence does not establish a matched PC configuration for a direct performance or price comparison.

Your display and resolution target
Microsoft describes Series X as a native 4K console. Its comparison page also lists frame rates up to 120 FPS for supported games; 4K at up to 120 FPS requires supported content and a compatible display. Series S is designed for 1440p and can upscale to 4K, which is not the same as native 4K rendering. Check your TV or monitor’s capabilities as well as the specific game.
A PC’s resolution and frame rate depend on its processor, graphics card, game, settings, and display. The Xbox PC app’s minimum operating-system requirements do not mean every PC can run every game well. Xbox says, “System requirements may vary by game, and performance scales with higher-end systems.” Xbox on PC

Physical discs and your existing library
The cited Series X configuration includes a UHD Blu-ray disc player. This can matter if you own disc-based Xbox games or want a console capable of playing UHD Blu-ray media. Confirm the drive on the specific Series X listing before purchase, because configurations vary.
Microsoft describes Series S as “an all-digital gaming console for disc-free gaming.” Disc-based games are not compatible, so an existing physical game collection cannot be used on Series S. Windows PC optical-disc support depends on the particular build and software; it is not a defining feature established by Xbox’s PC pages.

For supported Xbox Play Anywhere titles, one purchase can cover Xbox console, PC, and supported gaming handhelds at no additional cost, with saves, progress, add-ons, and achievements carrying across supported devices. This applies title by title, so check a game’s listing for Play Anywhere eligibility before assuming a purchase or save will carry over.
Cloud streaming can provide another way to access some games, but it requires a subscription and supported device; some cloud-playable games are sold separately, and the available library varies. It is not an automatic substitute for owning the hardware or the game. Xbox on PC

Series S is listed with 512GB or 1TB SSD configurations, while Series X storage configurations also vary. If you expect to keep many large games installed, compare the specific console’s storage with your needs before choosing.

Both consoles support a dedicated Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card. Microsoft says it connects to the dedicated port and delivers the console’s custom SSD performance. Standard USB external hard drives are also supported, but that does not mean every external drive runs optimized games at the expansion card’s performance. Xbox console comparison

On PC, storage capacity and upgrade options depend on the build. Compare the actual components and available upgrade path rather than assuming a generic capacity or expansion cost.
Setup, flexibility, and other uses
The consoles are fixed hardware configurations, so you do not need to select a processor or graphics card. A PC lets you choose and upgrade hardware, but that flexibility comes with responsibility: match the configuration to the games and display you want, and check each game’s requirements. If you already own a capable PC, compare its game access and features with what you want from Xbox before buying another device.

Console prices and stock vary by location and retailer, and the available official price sheet is historical rather than a current quote. No matched, specified gaming-PC build price is established here, so a claim that a PC costs more or less than a console would not be a fair comparison. Account for the actual PC components and any peripherals or display you need.
Game Pass is an optional recurring subscription, not part of the console hardware price. Microsoft describes access to hundreds of games with Game Pass, but tiers, terms, catalog, and prices can change; check current details before including it in your budget. Xbox Game Pass
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Pick Series X if you need disc playback, play physical Xbox games, or want the Series X native-4K target. Check the exact drive and storage configuration.
- Pick Series S if digital-only gaming works for you and the 1440p target with 4K upscaling suits your display. Select the 512GB or 1TB option with your library in mind.
- Pick a Windows gaming PC if native PC games and hardware choice matter enough to justify selecting a suitable configuration and checking requirements game by game.
- Reassess before buying if you already own a PC that may cover the games and features you want, or if your decision depends on a subscription, a specific Play Anywhere title, or a particular price. Verify those details for your region and model.
