Frequent sleep or ordinary hibernation is not, by itself, a reason to buy an unusually high-endurance SSD. First make sure the drive fits your PC and matches its supported interface; then choose enough capacity and compare the exact model’s endurance rating and warranty. True hibernation writes saved system state to storage, but Kingston says daily hibernation has a negligible effect on SSD lifespan per year—a vendor assessment, not a guarantee for every drive or workload.
Does hibernating wear out an SSD?
Hibernation writes data: the computer saves its current state to persistent storage so it can restore that state later. Kingston describes this as writing RAM contents to storage and says daily hibernation has a negligible effect on an SSD’s lifespan per year. That is Kingston’s guidance, not an independent test or a promise that every PC writes the same amount. Kingston’s SSD health article

Sleep is a less precise term in everyday use and can refer to different power states. The available evidence does not establish a single write amount for every modern sleep state, so there is no reliable per-sleep-cycle figure to use when choosing a drive.
Check compatibility before comparing SSDs
Start with the exact PC or motherboard model and its documentation. An SSD must match both the physical space available and the connection the system supports. M.2 describes a form factor; it does not by itself mean a slot supports NVMe. Some systems use 2.5-inch SATA drives, M.2 SATA drives, or M.2 NVMe drives, and M.2 modules also come in different lengths. Check the supported PCIe generation and any clearance or heatsink requirements, too. Samsung’s buying guide compares internal NVMe models by M.2 size and PCIe interface and notes that replacement procedures vary by device and manufacturer. Samsung SSD buying guide

Choose capacity for your whole workload
Estimate space for the operating system, applications, games, files, and reasonable headroom—not just the hibernation file. Hibernation can use SSD space because saved system state is stored on the drive. Samsung’s white paper explains the mechanism and discusses reserved storage, but it describes older Windows behavior; do not use its historical reservation figures as a current Windows 11 sizing rule. Compare TBW and warranty for the exact drive
TBW, or terabytes written, is a published endurance rating. It is useful for comparing rated write endurance between specific models and capacities, but it is not a forecast of when a drive will fail. Warranty terms may end when either a time limit or a write limit is reached, and they vary by product and region. Check the warranty for the exact drive you plan to buy, including the capacity, region, and seller eligibility. Samsung’s warranty page also advises users to back up important data. - Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
| Example drive | Interface and capacity | Published endurance and warranty |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung 990 Pro | M.2, PCIe Gen 4.0 x4; 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB listed in Samsung’s U.S. guide | Five years or 600 TBW per TB of capacity, as stated in Samsung’s U.S. guide; verify local terms. |
| Samsung 980, 1TB | NVMe M.2, PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 | Up to 600 TBW and a five-year limited warranty on the cited regional page; verify local availability and terms. |
These are examples, not universal recommendations. Samsung’s U.S. guide lists the 990 Pro’s warranty condition as five years or 600 TBW per TB of capacity; that figure applies to the listed models and is not a universal SSD benchmark. Consider speed, heat, and power after fit and capacity
Compare performance and power specifications only after confirming compatibility and capacity. Product generations differ in interface, speed, and power characteristics; a higher peak-speed model is not automatically useful for a PC whose main task is resuming from sleep. For ordinary desktop use, the evidence does not show that frequent sleep or hibernation alone requires paying a premium for a faster or unusually high-endurance drive.

A practical buying sequence
- Identify the system: Find the exact PC or motherboard model and check its documentation for supported drive type, interface, M.2 length, PCIe generation, and heatsink or clearance requirements.
- Set a capacity target: Allow for the OS, software, files, and headroom. Treat hibernation as one storage use, not as a reason to apply an old Windows reservation percentage.
- Compare exact models: For the capacity you intend to buy, check the stated TBW and warranty duration, thresholds, seller eligibility, and regional terms.
- Match performance to the PC: Avoid paying for peak speed or endurance solely because the computer sleeps or hibernates frequently.
- Protect your data: Back up important files before replacing or migrating a drive, as Samsung’s warranty guidance advises.
If you are searching for a candidate, “1TB NVMe M.2 SSD” is a useful starting phrase only when the PC supports NVMe M.2. Confirm compatibility against the system documentation rather than assuming that any M.2 drive will work.
