Choose an SDR antenna by the frequency or band you actually want to hear, then match its polarization, placement and feed line to that signal. An adjustable dipole is the most flexible starting point for VHF and UHF; a discone is a practical outdoor choice for broad VHF/UHF scanning; a tuned vertical is usually better for 1090 MHz ADS-B; and HF listening needs an HF loop, long wire or active antenna rather than a short VHF whip.

No antenna receives every frequency equally well. Frequency sets the useful antenna dimensions, while polarization, height, coax loss and receiver bandwidth determine how much of the signal reaches your software.

Start with the band, not the connector

Write down the services you want to receive and their frequencies before buying an antenna. A receiver may tune a wide range, but an antenna has its own useful range and radiation pattern. A short whip that is convenient at 150 MHz is electrically tiny at 10 MHz and may be a poor choice at 1090 MHz as well.

The practical choices are:

What you want to receive Best starting point Important setup detail
FM broadcast, about 88–108 MHz Adjustable dipole Use roughly quarter-wave elements and keep the antenna vertical for ordinary broadcast reception.
Airband or marine VHF Adjustable dipole or discone Use vertical polarization and adjust the elements near the target band.
137 MHz weather satellites V-dipole or another satellite-appropriate antenna A cited design uses a horizontal V arrangement with an angle of about 120 degrees.
General VHF/UHF scanning Outdoor discone It covers many services at once, but a tuned antenna can produce a stronger peak signal on one band.
1090 MHz ADS-B Tuned vertical antenna, often a quarter-wave or collinear design Keep the coax short; filtering and an LNA may help when interference or cable loss is significant.
Shortwave, AM/MW, CB or amateur HF HF loop, long wire or active HF antenna Use receiver hardware with direct sampling or an upconverter; a normal VHF/UHF whip is not an HF solution.

That first decision eliminates most mismatches. You can then refine the choice using polarization, indoor or outdoor location, directional versus omnidirectional coverage, cable length and the receiver’s own frequency limits.

How frequency sets antenna length

A simple dipole is approximately a quarter wavelength per element. The element must be physically longer at lower frequencies and much shorter at higher frequencies. A useful sizing rule from the Cascade-SDR guide is length_cm ≈ 7125 / freq_MHz for each adjustable element after allowing for the hidden length in the base and hardware.

Target frequency Approximate length of each dipole element What that means in practice
100 MHz About 69 cm A manageable VHF dipole for FM and nearby services.
162 MHz About 42 cm Suitable starting dimensions for marine or weather-band reception.
1090 MHz About 5 cm A much smaller, purpose-tuned antenna is practical for ADS-B.

These are starting dimensions, not a guarantee of resonance. Adjust both elements symmetrically when the antenna allows it, and make small changes while watching reception on the frequency of interest. Nearby objects, the mounting surface and the feed point alter the final result.

Bandwidth versus tuning

A wideband antenna trades peak performance for coverage. It can be convenient when you move among many VHF and UHF services, but it is rarely the strongest possible antenna for every one of them. A tuned antenna concentrates its useful performance around a narrower target, which is why a dedicated 1090 MHz antenna can outperform a general scanner antenna for ADS-B.

Do not confuse antenna bandwidth with the SDR’s instantaneous capture bandwidth. RTLSDR-Airband documentation describes approximately 2.5 MHz of capture bandwidth for one RTL dongle. Channels close enough to fit inside that span can be monitored together; widely separated channels require frequency hopping or additional receivers even if the antenna itself covers both.

Pick the antenna style that matches your use

Adjustable dipole: the flexible VHF/UHF starting point

An adjustable dipole is a good first antenna when you are learning what signals exist in your area. Sliding or telescoping elements let you retune it for FM broadcast, airband, marine VHF, public-service channels and other VHF/UHF targets. It is inexpensive to experiment with and makes the relationship between frequency and physical length visible.

Mount the elements vertically for most terrestrial VHF/UHF services. If you change from a 100 MHz target to a 162 MHz target, shorten both sides rather than moving only one. A dipole is usually a better choice than a random-length whip when you know the band but want to explore several nearby frequencies.

Discone: broad outdoor VHF/UHF coverage

A discone is an omnidirectional, wideband antenna intended for monitoring many VHF and UHF services from one outdoor location. It is useful for scanning when you do not want to retune an antenna for every band. The trade-off is lower peak performance than a tuned antenna designed for one service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a discone when coverage and convenience matter more than maximum signal strength on one frequency. It cannot turn an SDR into an HF receiver: its useful range is still governed by the antenna’s design and installation.

Dedicated vertical: focused reception at 1090 MHz

ADS-B uses a 1090 MHz carrier. A vertical quarter-wave, collinear or other antenna designed for that frequency is normally a better starting point than a general-purpose whip. Keep it unobstructed and as high as practical because aircraft signals are predominantly line-of-sight.

At 1090 MHz, cable loss matters more than it does at lower VHF frequencies. Use the shortest practical run of good-quality coax. If strong local stations overload the receiver, a 1090 MHz filter can remove out-of-band energy. An LNA placed where it can improve the signal before substantial feed-line loss may help, but an amplifier also makes overload easier if the input environment is already strong.

V-dipole for 137 MHz weather satellites

Weather-satellite reception around 137 MHz has different geometry from ordinary terrestrial scanning. The cited helper design uses a horizontal V with an angle of about 120 degrees. That orientation helps match the satellite signal’s changing path better than simply standing a normal vertical whip upright.

Use a clear view of the sky and keep the two elements equal in length. A general discone may hear strong satellite passes, but a satellite-appropriate V-dipole can provide a cleaner starting point for this specific task.

HF loop, long wire or active antenna

Shortwave, AM/MW, CB and amateur HF signals require an antenna that is physically or electrically suited to HF. Typical choices include a loop, long wire or active antenna. These designs are not interchangeable with a short VHF/UHF dipole simply because the same coax connector fits.

HF installations also bring different practical concerns: available space, noise from household electronics, grounding and the receiver’s HF architecture. Select the antenna and the SDR mode together.

Polarization is part of the match

Polarization describes the electric-field orientation of the signal. A mismatch can reduce the received signal even when the antenna is otherwise tuned correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Terrestrial VHF/UHF: Keep most whips and dipoles vertical for ordinary land-mobile, airband and marine reception.
  • ADS-B: Use a vertical antenna. The aircraft transmissions are vertically polarized.
  • 137 MHz satellite work: A horizontal V arrangement around 120 degrees is the cited starting geometry.

When testing a new installation, rotate or reorient the antenna only after confirming that the frequency and element lengths are sensible. Otherwise you may mistake a polarization problem for a tuning problem.

Installation choices that determine real-world performance

Height and obstructions

Put an outdoor antenna as high and unobstructed as practical, particularly for line-of-sight services such as aircraft tracking. Walls, roofs, nearby metal and dense vegetation can change the pattern. An indoor antenna can work well for strong local stations, but it has less predictable coverage and is more exposed to household electrical noise.

Coax length and loss

Every metre of coax attenuates some signal, and the loss becomes more consequential as frequency rises. This is especially important at 1090 MHz. Use a short, good-quality cable, avoid unnecessary adapters and protect outdoor connectors from moisture.

Check that the antenna connector, coax connector and SDR input are mechanically compatible. Also verify the antenna and receiver’s nominal impedance in their manuals; a physical connector fit does not prove an electrical match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Filters and overload control

Strong FM broadcast, cellular or television transmitters can overload a wideband SDR even when they are not the signal you want. A band-appropriate filter ahead of the receiver can reduce that energy. For ADS-B, a 1090 MHz filter is the targeted option described for this use.

An LNA is not automatically an upgrade. It can compensate for feed-line loss when placed appropriately, but it can also amplify unwanted signals and push the SDR into overload. First confirm that the antenna is correctly oriented, the coax is sound and the receiver gain is sensible.

Bias-tee power

Some active antennas and LNAs receive DC power through the coax from a bias tee. Enable bias-tee output only when the SDR, cable and powered accessory are designed for it. AccessDR documentation warns that sending DC into an unsupported passive chain can damage hardware. If your antenna is passive, leave the bias tee off unless its documentation explicitly requires it.

Make sure the SDR can receive the band

The antenna cannot overcome a receiver architecture that does not cover the desired frequency. Compatible RTL-SDR hardware can use direct sampling for roughly 0.1–28 MHz, according to the AccessDR user guide. In normal tuner operation, the practical lower limit is about 24 MHz and above. Therefore, an HF antenna must be paired with a dongle and mode that actually support HF.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An upconverter is another way to move HF signals into the tuner’s supported range. It changes the receiver-side setup, so account for its conversion range, tuning offset and any filtering when you configure software.

For VHF and UHF, verify not only that the SDR tunes the frequency but also that its sample rate and capture bandwidth suit the channels you want to monitor. A single RTL dongle can cover nearby channels inside approximately 2.5 MHz of spectrum, but not widely separated channels at the same time.

A step-by-step selection procedure

  1. List the target frequencies. Write the exact band or channels, such as 100 MHz FM, 162 MHz marine, 137 MHz satellite or 1090 MHz ADS-B. If you have several targets, note whether they are close together or spread across VHF, UHF and HF.
  2. Decide whether you need a tuned or wideband antenna. Choose an adjustable dipole for flexible VHF/UHF experimentation, a discone for broad outdoor scanning, or a dedicated antenna when one service matters most.
  3. Size the elements. For a dipole, start with 7125 / frequency in MHz centimetres per element, then adjust both sides equally. Use the target frequency rather than the highest frequency your SDR happens to tune.
  4. Set polarization. Start vertical for terrestrial VHF/UHF and ADS-B. Use the horizontal V geometry described for 137 MHz weather-satellite work.
  5. Plan the location. Choose the highest practical, least obstructed position. For ADS-B and other line-of-sight signals, elevation and clear surroundings are particularly valuable.
  6. Minimize the feed line. Use the shortest practical coax, especially above 1 GHz. Avoid extra connectors and inspect outdoor connections for water ingress.
  7. Check receiver compatibility. Confirm the SDR covers the target frequency in the intended operating mode. For HF, verify direct-sampling support or plan for an upconverter.
  8. Add accessories only for a defined problem. Use a filter when strong out-of-band stations cause overload, and consider an LNA only when feed-line loss or a weak signal justifies it. Enable bias tee only for compatible powered hardware.
  9. Test one variable at a time. Start with the antenna correctly oriented and the receiver at moderate gain. Change element length, height, filter or amplifier settings separately so you can identify what helped.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using a VHF whip for HF

Symptom: The SDR tunes an HF frequency but hears little beyond noise.

Correction: Use an HF loop, long wire or active HF antenna, then select direct sampling or an upconverter as required by the receiver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting one antenna to be optimal everywhere

Symptom: A wideband antenna receives many stations, but one desired band is weak compared with reports from a tuned setup.

Correction: Accept the discone’s coverage trade-off or install a band-specific antenna for the service that matters most.

Installing a 1090 MHz antenna with a long cable

Symptom: Aircraft are detected close to the antenna, but range falls sharply after moving the receiver indoors.

Correction: Shorten the coax, use lower-loss cable and consider an appropriately placed LNA. Add a 1090 MHz filter if strong nearby transmitters are also present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mounting a vertical service antenna horizontally

Symptom: Local VHF/UHF signals are unexpectedly weak despite correct element length.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Correction: Return the antenna to vertical polarization unless the service calls for a different orientation, such as the cited 137 MHz satellite V-dipole arrangement.

Adding an amplifier to an already overloaded receiver

Symptom: More gain produces more noise, intermodulation or fewer decodes.

Correction: Remove the LNA temporarily, reduce receiver gain and add filtering before amplifying. An LNA cannot repair overload caused by strong unwanted signals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turning on bias tee without checking the chain

Symptom: The receiver or passive accessory behaves abnormally after bias-tee output is enabled.

Correction: Disable the bias tee immediately and verify that the antenna, cable and SDR are designed for DC feed. Unsupported passive equipment can be damaged by injected voltage.

A practical way to balance coverage and performance

For a first VHF/UHF station, an adjustable dipole gives you a measurable, tunable baseline. If you later need simultaneous monitoring across many VHF/UHF services and can install outdoors, move to a discone while accepting its lower peak performance. If one mission dominates—such as aircraft tracking at 1090 MHz—use a dedicated vertical antenna, short coax and targeted filtering rather than trying to make a general scanner antenna do everything.

For HF, plan a separate antenna path and confirm the SDR’s operating mode before troubleshooting the antenna. The receiver, antenna, polarization and installation are one system; changing only the antenna will not fix a frequency range that the SDR hardware cannot process.
