The best choice depends on what you want to discover and what you mean by a changing world. Choose Tears of the Kingdom if you want to reinterpret familiar terrain through caves, sky routes and vertical movement; choose No Man’s Sky for broad, procedural discovery and survival; choose Elden Ring for authored fields and dungeons that connect into dangerous, unfamiliar journeys. None of these examples proves that “open world” alone guarantees meaningful change, and they should not be treated as an overall ranking.

Open world is a format, not a promise of meaningful exploration

An open-world label usually means that large areas can be traversed with relatively few loading barriers and that the player has latitude about where to go next. It does not tell you whether exploration is observant, experimental, survival-focused or combat-led. It also does not tell you whether your actions permanently alter the setting.

A 2025 DiGRA paper identifies autonomy, non-linear progression, emergent play, meaningful exploration and persistent world systems as useful characteristics when discussing open-world design. Those are better questions than map size. Two games can both advertise a large explorable area while offering very different reasons to leave the main path.

Before comparing games, separate three ideas that are often merged:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Discovery: what you find and how the game makes finding it rewarding.
  • Exploration activity: the actions used to investigate the world, such as climbing, diving, experimenting, surviving hazards or fighting.
  • World change: whether the developer adds content, your decisions alter states, or you build something that persists.

Use those distinctions to choose an experience rather than assuming that every open-world game delivers the same kind of freedom.

Decide what “discovery” should feel like

Re-reading a familiar landscape

Some exploration is about recognition. You may want to return to a place that looks familiar, then notice a route, cave, height or interaction that was previously unavailable. This design makes memory part of discovery: the pleasure comes from understanding how a known location has acquired new possibilities.

Nintendo’s developers describe The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in these terms. The game adds sky areas and caves to a familiar setting, supports vertical movement and allows seamless travel between the surface and sky. Takizawa explains the design goal directly: “When a place – even one that’s already familiar – is augmented with something of worth, you begin to see the world in a different light.”

Choose this pattern if you enjoy looking at a landscape from a new height, testing routes and connecting spaces that were previously separate. It is less about an endless supply of unrelated locations than about layered possibilities in a setting whose geography can become more legible over time.

Finding unusual places in a generated galaxy

Other games make novelty the central reward. Instead of learning one authored region in detail, you travel through many generated environments and look for unusual planets, creatures, formations or resources. The uncertainty comes from what the next destination will contain.

Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as an exploration and survival game in a procedurally generated galaxy. Its press kit lists visiting star systems, discovering unique creatures and formations, gathering resources for upgrades, coping with hazards, sharing discoveries, multiplayer and cross-save. This profile suits players who value breadth, repeated travel and the possibility that the next system will differ from the last.

Procedural generation changes the source of surprise, but it does not automatically make every discovery meaningful. You should decide whether you enjoy collecting observations and resources, managing survival pressures and pursuing upgrades across many destinations. If you prefer carefully authored sequences, a generated galaxy may feel less directed than you want.

Following connections toward authored danger

A third pattern uses a large world as a network of deliberate encounters. Exploration means noticing how an open field leads to a complex dungeon, recognizing a landmark that suggests danger, and deciding whether your character is prepared to continue.

Elden Ring is a clear example of this structure. Its official description connects exploration with unknown threats and accomplishment, while an Xbox Wire interview with director Hidetaka Miyazaki describes open fields and large, complex, three-dimensional dungeons that connect seamlessly. The reward is often the encounter, route or challenge you uncover rather than a permanent construction project.

This is a strong fit if you want exploration to create tension and to lead toward designed combat spaces. It is not evidence that the world is permanently reshaped by every player decision; the cited material supports connected exploration and danger, not a claim about persistent player-led alteration.

Separate the four kinds of world change

When a description says that a world “changes,” identify who or what causes the change. The following categories are not interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Change type What changes What you will notice Evidence in the examples
Developer-added content A patch or expansion adds environments, systems or locations for everyone using that version. New areas or mechanics appear after an update, regardless of a particular save’s choices. No Man’s Sky’s Worlds Part II update describes new planetary environments and exploration features.
New possibilities in familiar places The developer layers caves, vertical routes or valuable features onto an existing setting. A location you recognized can now be approached, viewed or used differently. Tears of the Kingdom adds sky and cave areas and vertical gameplay to a familiar world.
Player-caused state changes Your choices alter characters, access, quests, hazards or other persistent conditions in a save. Returning to a location after an action produces a different state. The cited descriptions do not establish a common, persistent choice-driven system for the three examples.
Player-made construction You build, modify or organize objects that remain part of your world or shared space. Your own structures or arrangements become landmarks and affect later travel. The supplied descriptions do not establish construction persistence as a comparable feature across these examples.

Worlds Part II is therefore evidence of developer-driven variation, not proof that an individual player’s choices permanently reshape every planet in No Man’s Sky. Likewise, the sky and cave additions in Tears of the Kingdom show how designers can change the meaning of familiar terrain; they do not by themselves demonstrate a simulation in which every player action permanently rebuilds the map.

A practical comparison framework

Answer these questions before looking at a storefront description. Write a short answer for each game you are considering; a mismatch on the first two questions usually matters more than a difference in map size.

1. What counts as discovery?

  • Hidden routes, environmental details and new views in a known landscape?
  • Unusual generated planets, creatures and formations?
  • Interconnected fields and dungeons that lead toward authored encounters?

2. What do you do while exploring?

  • Observe, climb, dive and experiment with movement or tools?
  • Gather resources, survive hazards, upgrade equipment and travel between systems?
  • Read terrain, manage risk and fight through increasingly dangerous spaces?

3. Who causes the change?

Mark each advertised change as a developer update, a new layer in a familiar location, a consequence of your decisions or a construction system. If a description does not identify the mechanism, treat “changing world” as an unverified marketing phrase rather than a feature you can compare.

4. How much direction do you want?

Players who enjoy self-directed wandering should look for autonomy and non-linear progression. Players who prefer designed discoveries may want clear landmarks, connected routes and authored encounters. The DiGRA discussion supports using autonomy and non-linearity as comparison dimensions, but it does not score the named games on a shared scale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. What kind of persistence matters?

Decide whether persistence means a permanent update available to everyone, a changed save state, a long-term character build or a structure you made. Ask the publisher’s description for the exact persistence claim. “The world evolves” can refer to any of these and is too broad to guide a purchase on its own.

6. What practical limits apply?

Check the actual platform, edition, regional listing, price, save-transfer support and accessibility options at the time you intend to buy. Platform lists and editions can change, and a press kit is not a guarantee of current regional stock or retailer pricing.

Three example profiles

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — vertical exploration in familiar terrain

Choose this profile when the appeal is seeing a known landscape differently. Nintendo developer Fujibayashi describes the central addition as follows: “This time, we added ‘verticality’ – in other words, gameplay that utilizes height.” The developers also discuss caves, sky areas and seamless movement between the surface and sky.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The important design distinction is not simply that the world is large. It is that valuable features are placed in multiple layers, so a location can invite observation from above, entry from below or a route that was not previously apparent. Takizawa’s explanation captures the intended effect: “When a place – even one that’s already familiar – is augmented with something of worth, you begin to see the world in a different light.”

  • Best match: players who enjoy vertical routes, environmental observation and experimenting with how spaces connect.
  • Nature of change: developer-authored additions and new possibilities in a familiar setting.
  • Do not infer: the cited material does not establish that every player action permanently changes the shared world.
  • Check before purchase: Nintendo Switch platform context, current edition and regional price; the interview does not establish current retailer inventory.

No Man’s Sky — procedural breadth and survival

Choose this profile when you want travel itself to produce variety. Hello Games’ press kit describes an infinite procedurally generated galaxy and lists star-system travel, unique creatures and formations, resource gathering for upgrades, hazards, shared discoveries, multiplayer and cross-save.

The loop is therefore broader than “find a hidden cave.” You may decide which system to visit, document something unusual, collect resources for a future upgrade or share a discovery with other players. Survival pressures give those decisions practical consequences: a destination is not only a visual novelty but also a place with hazards and materials that influence what you can do next.

The Worlds Part II update demonstrates a different meaning of change. Its description adds new planetary environments and exploration features, including ancient ruins, gas giants, water worlds and a custom abandoned mode. Those are developer-added changes delivered through an update. They should not be presented as evidence that an individual player’s decisions permanently reshape every world.

  • Best match: players who want broad procedural discovery, resource management and survival-oriented travel.
  • Nature of change: generated variety during play plus developer updates that add environments and features.
  • Do not infer: procedural generation alone guarantees that every destination will feel equally significant.
  • Check before purchase: current platform support, edition, cross-save terms and regional availability; the press-kit list is broad but volatile.

Elden Ring — connected fields, dungeons and unknown threats

Choose this profile when exploration should lead toward danger and demanding encounters. The official description presents exploration as a route toward unknown threats and accomplishment. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki told Xbox Wire that the design joins open fields to large, complex, three-dimensional dungeons without breaking the connection between them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This structure makes geography a form of suspense. A field can suggest a ruin, a passage can open into a large dungeon and an apparently optional direction can lead to a threat you were not prepared to meet. Miyazaki also said: “There wasn’t one specific game that served as inspiration, but we’ve enjoyed many classic open-world games from a player’s perspective and each one has given us a unique and wonderful incentive.” That statement concerns inspirations, not a universal definition of good exploration.

Side-by-side decision table

Question Tears of the Kingdom No Man’s Sky Elden Ring
Primary discovery sensation Reinterpreting familiar places through added layers and routes Finding varied generated planets, life and formations Uncovering connected fields, dungeons and threats
Main exploration actions described by the sources Vertical movement, surface-to-sky travel and cave exploration Travel, discovery, resource gathering, survival and upgrades Traversing fields and complex three-dimensional dungeons
World-change evidence Developer-added sky and cave areas in a familiar setting Procedural variety and developer updates such as Worlds Part II Seamless connection of authored spaces; persistent player change not established
Direction Non-linear movement through layered terrain Self-directed travel across generated systems Exploration guided by landmarks, routes and dangerous encounters
What the cited material does not establish A universal player-choice world-state system Permanent reshaping of every world by individual choices A persistent construction or player-led world-alteration system

Step-by-step method for choosing your game

  1. Write your desired discovery in one sentence. For example: “I want to find new routes in places I can remember,” “I want the next planet to surprise me,” or “I want exploration to lead to dangerous authored encounters.”
  2. Name the activity you are willing to repeat. Choose among observation and movement experiments, survival and resource management, or combat and route reading. A beautiful world cannot compensate for a core activity you dislike.
  3. Classify every world-change claim. Label it developer update, familiar-place augmentation, player-caused state change or player construction. Reject descriptions that leave the mechanism unclear.
  4. Set your tolerance for direction. Decide whether you want to choose almost every destination, follow clues toward designed spaces or alternate between both.
  5. Verify practical eligibility. Confirm the current platform, edition, regional store listing, price and save features. Treat older press-kit information as a starting point, not a current sales guarantee.
  6. Use a deal-breaker test. Eliminate a game if its dominant activity, persistence model or platform does not match your answer. Do not let a larger map or a newer update override a basic mismatch.
  7. Re-check version-specific claims. If your decision depends on an update, confirm that the update is available on your platform and edition and note its date. A developer patch can change the shared version without changing the underlying way your individual choices work.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by map size

A large map can contain familiar scenery, repeated tasks or long travel without discovery. Ask what the game places at the end of a detour and what action makes that detour interesting.

Treating procedural generation as authored surprise

Generated environments can supply breadth, but they do not guarantee a deliberate dramatic sequence. If you need carefully placed reveals, compare the game’s authored route design rather than its number of possible locations.

Confusing an update with personal consequence

An update such as Worlds Part II changes the version everyone plays. That is different from a save in which your decision permanently changes a location. Confirm which kind of persistence is promised.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming familiar terrain means a static world

A familiar setting can become substantially more exploratory when new vertical layers, caves or valuable features are added. The relevant question is whether the additions create new decisions, not whether the base map is new.

Calling every connected space “player freedom”

A seamless field-to-dungeon connection can make travel feel coherent while still leading to authored, combat-focused encounters. Seamlessness describes continuity, not the amount of autonomy or the presence of persistent world change.

Ignoring platform and edition differences

Platform lists, cross-save support, updates and regional prices are subject to change. Verify the listing for the specific device and region you will use, especially when relying on a feature mentioned in an older interview or press kit.

Match the choice to your personal profile

If your priority is… Start with… Why
Seeing a remembered landscape from new angles Tears of the Kingdom Its cited design emphasizes sky, caves, verticality and new value in familiar places.
Traveling through many generated environments No Man’s Sky Its cited description centers on a procedurally generated galaxy, discoveries, hazards and upgrades.
Following geography toward difficult encounters Elden Ring Its cited description links open fields with complex dungeons and exploration with unknown threats.
Personal construction or permanent choice-driven alteration Verify the exact feature before choosing The cited material does not establish a directly comparable construction or player-state system across these three examples.

Bottom line for a purchase decision

Choose the game whose kind of discovery matches your reason for exploring. Pick Tears of the Kingdom for vertical reinterpretation of familiar terrain, No Man’s Sky for procedural breadth joined to survival systems, and Elden Ring for connected authored spaces that turn travel into a route toward danger. Treat “meaningful world changes” as a precise question about who changes the world and how long that change persists, then verify current platform and edition details before buying.
