The best on-device AI assistant is not the one with the longest feature list. Choose the assistant that performs your specific jobs—rewriting, summarizing, translation, file search, screen understanding, or actions across apps—on your exact device, in your country and language, with privacy controls you can accept.

Before buying hardware or enabling every integration, verify five things: which features are genuinely processed locally, the model and memory requirements, the apps and permissions involved, regional and language availability, and whether cloud processing can be disabled without losing the functions you need.

What “on-device AI” actually means

On-device AI means an AI model performs at least part of its work on the phone or computer rather than sending every prompt to a remote service. That can reduce dependence on an internet connection and keep some sensitive input inside the device. It does not mean that every feature in an assistant is local.

Modern assistants are collections of features. A small model may handle speech recognition, translation, or text suggestions locally, while a larger model handles a complex rewrite or image edit in a private or public cloud. The same product can therefore be local for one task and cloud-based for another. Apple says many Apple Intelligence tasks run entirely on the device, but its documentation also identifies server-side models and features that may have daily limits. Samsung explicitly labels individual Galaxy AI functions as on-device or cloud-based. Google’s Android documentation likewise distinguishes local processing from what an app may do with the resulting data.

Use “on-device” as a feature-level question, not a product-wide promise. Ask, “Where is this particular action processed, what leaves my device, and can I turn cloud processing off?”

Start with the jobs you need

Write down the three to five tasks that would make an assistant useful. Do not start with a brand or a benchmark; the right choice depends on the workflow.

Writing and communication

Text rewriting, proofreading, tone changes, message suggestions, and email summaries are common use cases. Check whether the assistant works inside the messaging, mail, notes, and document apps you actually use. A feature available in a vendor’s own app may not be available in a third-party editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Translation and speech

Live translation, transcription, and language detection can be especially useful offline. Confirm the exact language pair, whether downloaded language data is required, and whether the feature is limited to calls, messages, or a particular keyboard.

Personal search and summaries

Searching mail, photos, notes, or files requires access to those data sources. An assistant that cannot connect to your preferred services may be less useful than a less ambitious assistant with the right integrations.

Screen understanding and actions

Some assistants can interpret what is displayed and suggest or perform actions in other apps. These functions often require screen context, accessibility, or device-signal permissions. They can also involve cloud processing even when the assistant includes a local model.

Creative and image features

Image editing, generative effects, and long-form composition generally need more computing resources. Samsung lists image editing among its cloud-based Galaxy AI examples, while translation and selected message functions are examples of local processing. Treat each effect separately rather than assuming an entire camera or gallery feature is offline.

Compare assistants on the decisions that matter

Decision Questions to answer Why it matters
Task coverage Does the assistant perform your required jobs in the apps you use? A broad feature list is irrelevant if your workflow is unsupported.
Processing location Which steps run locally, which use private or other cloud infrastructure, and can cloud processing be disabled? Local processing can improve privacy and offline resilience, but disabling the cloud may remove useful features.
Compatibility Is your exact model, operating-system version, RAM or unified memory, storage, and chipset supported? Eligibility is often model-specific, not simply “Android,” “iPhone,” or “Mac.”
Privacy controls Can you manage app connections, screen context, account linkage, retention, and per-feature processing? Permissions determine what the assistant can know and what services can receive.
Availability Is the feature offered in your country, language, age group, and software channel? Rollouts, beta status, and regulatory restrictions can change the answer.
Support horizon Will the device continue receiving operating-system and model updates during your ownership? An assistant can become less useful when updates stop. Verify the manufacturer’s current policy before treating this as a ranking factor.

Check hardware and software before you buy

Do not infer support from a device’s price, release year, or operating-system name. Open the manufacturer’s current requirements page and match the precise model, storage configuration, software version, language, and region.

Apple Intelligence requirements

Apple’s current requirements list Apple Intelligence on iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, selected iPad models, selected Mac models, and other Apple devices. Eligibility is feature-specific. Some newer, more advanced on-device models and features require higher-memory configurations and additional storage.

Apple states that supported devices may need up to 14GB of local storage on certain higher-memory configurations and up to 8GB on other supported Apple Intelligence devices. These are capacity requirements for the models and related data, not a claim that every feature consumes that amount continuously. Leave adequate free storage for operating-system updates and your own files.

Availability also depends on the installed software, matching device and Siri languages, region, and the individual feature. A compatible model is therefore necessary but not sufficient.

Gemini Intelligence requirements on Android

Google’s Gemini Intelligence requirements include an on-device Nano model, at least 12GB of RAM, and a qualified system-on-chip, along with quality criteria. Google cautions that features vary by device, country, and language.

RAM is not the only consideration. Two phones with the same memory amount can differ in chipset qualification, software build, thermal behavior, storage, or feature entitlement. Check the exact model number and current software release rather than relying on a retailer’s generic “AI phone” description.

Galaxy AI requirements

Samsung lists Galaxy S26 and other current and earlier supported models, but support varies by model and software version. Confirm the exact phone, the installed One UI version, the feature you want, and your market. A supported Galaxy phone does not imply that every Galaxy AI function runs locally.

Computers

Apple’s requirements include compatible Mac models, but available documentation does not establish a balanced, current comparison of fully local assistant capabilities across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Do not treat a cloud assistant or a phone-to-PC integration as proof that a Windows assistant is fully on-device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s Phone Link documentation establishes phone-to-PC integration for supported phones and Windows systems. It does not establish a like-for-like local assistant. If computer use is central, verify each desktop feature independently: local model support, memory requirements, supported applications, offline behavior, and whether prompts or files are sent to a server.

Understand each platform’s processing controls

Apple: local models plus feature-specific cloud services

Apple Support says, “In many cases, Apple Intelligence models run entirely on device so that a task can be completed without data leaving your device.” The qualification matters: “in many cases” is not a guarantee for every Apple Intelligence feature.

Apple’s September 2026 announcement describes Siri AI rolling out in beta in English on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 for Apple Intelligence-enabled devices. Support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish is announced for the following month. The same announcement says Siri AI is initially unavailable in the European Union on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS, and that Apple Intelligence features are unavailable in mainland China while regulatory requirements are addressed. Some server-side features may have daily usage limits.

Because this is a rollout-sensitive announcement, check the current language and regional status when you set up the device. Match the device language and Siri language where required; otherwise a compatible device may still show an unavailable feature.

Google: integrations and proactive context are choices

On eligible Android phones, Google lets you manage feature and data permissions individually. You can choose whether Gemini connects to apps such as Gmail, Photos, or Keep to provide personal context. Proactive Assistance may use screen details and signals from the device.

Review these connections deliberately. Connecting an app can make answers more useful, but it also expands the information the assistant can access. If you do not need a source, leave it disconnected and add it later only when a specific task requires it.

Google’s Android Enterprise guidance warns that local AI does not eliminate application-security risks. An app can use a local model and still transfer data to the cloud or collect it in another way. Examine the app’s permissions, network behavior, account settings, and retention disclosures rather than treating the presence of an on-device model as a complete privacy guarantee.

Samsung: an explicit local-only option with trade-offs

Samsung describes translation, ambient wallpapers, and selected Google Messages composition or suggestion functions as on-device examples. It describes auto formatting, summarizing, corrections, and image editing as cloud-based examples.

Galaxy AI includes a setting to process data only on the device. Turn it on when local processing is more important than access to cloud-dependent features. Expect some functions to disappear or become limited: a local-only setting is a privacy control, not a way to make every Galaxy AI feature work offline.

Use a repeatable selection process

  1. List your required tasks. Write concrete examples such as “summarize a long message thread,” “translate a conversation,” or “find a file in my notes.” Avoid vague goals such as “use AI more.”
  2. Mark data sensitivity. Identify tasks involving health information, work documents, financial data, private photos, or confidential conversations. Decide which categories you will not send to a cloud service.
  3. Check exact eligibility. Record your phone or computer model, RAM or unified memory, chipset, free storage, operating-system version, country, and preferred language. Compare those details with the official requirements for each feature.
  4. Separate local and cloud functions. For every task, note whether it is local, cloud-based, hybrid, or not clearly stated. If documentation is vague, do not assume local processing.
  5. Audit permissions. Review connected apps, screen access, microphone, contacts, photos, files, location, device signals, account linkage, and notification access. Enable only what a named task needs.
  6. Check limits and rollout status. Look for beta labels, daily limits, subscription requirements, age restrictions, language gaps, and country exclusions. Treat a promised future language or feature as unavailable until it works on your device.
  7. Test your own workflow. Use representative, non-sensitive examples first. Test with and without an internet connection, in your preferred language, inside the apps you use, and after enabling local-only controls.
  8. Decide whether hardware is necessary. Upgrade only when your current device lacks the required model, memory, chipset, storage, or software support. A new device is not justified merely by an “AI” label.

Privacy checklist before enabling an assistant

  • Read the processing description for each feature, not just the product’s general privacy statement.
  • Identify whether prompts, files, audio, screen contents, or generated results leave the device.
  • Disconnect Gmail, Photos, Keep, messaging, or other sources you do not need.
  • Review screen-context and proactive-assistance permissions separately from ordinary assistant access.
  • Check whether cloud processing can be disabled per feature or only through a global switch.
  • Understand what local-only mode removes or limits before relying on it.
  • Look for retention, account-linkage, deletion, and diagnostic-data controls.
  • For work devices, confirm that the organization’s software-supply-chain and data-handling policies permit the assistant.

Offline testing and failure modes

The feature disappears after enabling local-only mode

This usually means the function depends on a cloud model. Restore cloud processing only if the feature is worth the privacy trade-off, or use a local alternative with narrower capability.

The assistant works in one language but not another

Language support can differ by feature, operating system, region, and rollout stage. Confirm the supported language list and make the device and assistant languages match where required.

A compatible phone still reports that the feature is unavailable

Check the exact model variant, RAM configuration, chipset, operating-system release, account region, and available storage. Install pending updates and verify that the feature has launched in your market. Eligibility pages often describe a family of devices while excluding particular configurations.

Answers improve after connecting personal apps

That improvement indicates the assistant is using additional context, not that processing is local. Decide whether the convenience justifies granting access to those sources. Keep the connection off for sensitive accounts if it is not essential.

The assistant fails without internet access

Some local functions may continue while cloud-dependent actions stop. Test each task offline rather than judging the whole assistant from one success or failure. Downloaded language resources, indexing, and an initial setup connection may still be required.

The device becomes short on storage

On-device models occupy local storage. Apple documents requirements of up to 14GB for certain higher-memory configurations and up to 8GB for other supported Apple Intelligence devices. Maintain free space for updates and personal data; do not remove system components without checking what feature depends on them.

How the major options differ

Platform Documented local examples or requirements Important limits to verify
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI Many Apple Intelligence tasks run on device; eligible iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 16 or later, selected iPad and Mac models, and other supported devices. Up to 14GB or up to 8GB of local storage may be required depending on configuration. Feature, software, language, device, and region requirements differ. Siri AI rollout is beta and region-sensitive; some server-side features may have daily limits.
Gemini Intelligence on Android Requires eligible on-device Nano models, at least 12GB RAM, a qualified SoC, and other quality criteria. Features vary by device, country, and language. Gmail, Photos, Keep, screen details, and device signals can be connected as separate context sources.
Samsung Galaxy AI Samsung identifies translation, ambient wallpapers, and selected message composition or suggestions as on-device examples and provides a local-only processing setting. Auto formatting, summarizing, corrections, and image editing are documented as cloud-based examples. Model and software support varies, and local-only mode limits cloud features.
Windows, macOS, and Linux assistants Compatible Macs are included in Apple’s requirements; phone-to-PC integration is documented for supported phones and Windows systems. No balanced evidence here establishes equivalent fully local assistant capabilities across the three desktop operating systems. Verify each application and model separately.

What cannot be responsibly ranked

There is no independent cross-platform test in the available evidence that establishes which assistant is most accurate, fastest, least demanding on battery, or best offline. Do not treat marketing claims or a device’s AI branding as a measured ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Performance depends on the model, task, language, thermal state, software version, network availability, and whether the assistant switches to a cloud service. If speed, battery life, or accuracy is decisive, test the exact tasks on the exact devices you are considering and record the conditions.

When an upgrade is justified

Upgrade when your current phone or computer cannot run a required function because it lacks the supported model, 12GB memory threshold or qualified chipset where applicable, sufficient storage, a required operating-system version, or regional and language eligibility. Also consider an upgrade if the device will stop receiving updates during the period you plan to keep it, after verifying the manufacturer’s current support policy.

Do not upgrade solely for a larger assistant feature list. If your main tasks are ordinary text rewriting or translation and your current device supports them locally, a new device may add little practical value. Conversely, if you need personal-file search, screen-aware actions, or advanced image processing, the required permissions and cloud dependence may matter more than raw hardware.

A practical decision rule

Choose the assistant that passes all four tests: it performs your must-have tasks, runs on your exact configuration, gives you acceptable control over data and cloud processing, and is available in your language and region now. If one test fails, treat the assistant as unsuitable for that task even if the platform advertises broader capabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For privacy-sensitive work, prefer the option that offers clearly documented local processing and a usable local-only mode, then accept the narrower feature set. For convenience-heavy workflows, a hybrid assistant may be appropriate if you understand which apps, screen data, and files it can access. In either case, make the decision per feature rather than per logo.
