Before creating a character, check where your friends can play, try the combat if a trial is available, and confirm what the game currently includes for free or requires you to buy.
Start by deciding what kind of experience you want
MMORPGs can offer exploration, character progression, crafting, role-play, group challenges, or a persistent world to dip into casually. Rank the parts you care about most. For example, someone hoping to explore, develop professions, discover places, and gradually build a character may value relaxed solo progress more than competitive PvP or demanding group raids.

Be specific about what “relaxed” means to you: playing at your own pace, avoiding scheduled groups, choosing low-pressure activities, or simply not being forced to compete. A game can support solo play while still making some activities depend on other players.
What does “a big world” mean to you?
World size is not just map area. It can mean how many places invite exploration, whether zones connect into an overworld, how much content is available, how long the story takes, or how lively shared spaces feel. Decide which of these would make the world feel expansive to you.

Also check how the game divides players among servers, Worlds, or data centers. Those choices can affect where you create a character and how easily you meet friends. FINAL FANTASY XIV’s character-creation manual says data center selection determines which Worlds are available and recommends choosing one closer to you for a better gameplay experience. It also says players on the same Home World can play together regardless of platform. Guild Wars 2’s official article on home worlds and guesting describes cross-region guesting with restrictions.
These arrangements are game-specific. If you plan to play with friends, confirm the current region, world, and platform rules before settling on a character; do not assume that sharing a game title is enough.

Choose combat by feel, not by ability count
Combat is difficult to judge from a list of skills or promotional descriptions. Consider whether you prefer movement-driven action or more deliberate targeting, how much you enjoy managing a group role, and whether you want challenging encounters or forgiving solo play. PvP may also be central in one game and optional in another.

Try ordinary solo encounters and, if possible, a group activity. Notice whether movement, targeting, ability timing, and the pace of fights remain enjoyable. There is no universal combat ranking that can substitute for your own preference.

Decide how social you want the game to be
“Social” can mean a guild, casual chat, role-play, matchmaking, or coordinated group content. It can also mean sharing a world with other players while mostly pursuing your own goals. Decide whether you want regular scheduled groups or would rather join activities only when convenient.
As one example, FINAL FANTASY XIV’s official product comparison lists Linkshells and Cross-world Linkshells among its social features. That establishes the existence of tools, not whether a particular community is active or welcoming. Check current community resources and the game at the hours you expect to play, and look at whether your preferred activities require a fixed group.

Separate update cadence from how the game is sold
A game’s update schedule and its access model are separate questions. An update may be a patch, a seasonal activity, or a paid expansion; each can mean something different for the content you can play. Look for current information about substantial content releases, and check what “free” includes before committing.

FINAL FANTASY XIV distinguishes the Free Trial, Starter Edition, and Complete Edition in its official product comparison, which notes that details can change with updates. Guild Wars 2 support says its core game is free to play and explains that purchasing expansions upgrades an account. Check the publishers’ current terms for the exact content and restrictions that apply before paying.

Do not treat old release promises as a current schedule. ArenaNet’s historical Guild Wars 2 article described a goal of releasing new playable content every two weeks. That statement records a past plan; it does not establish the game’s present update cadence.

Make the decision in a few practical steps
- Write down your priorities. Choose the two or three factors that matter most, such as exploration, low-pressure solo play, role-play, crafting, or organized group challenges.
- Shortlist games that fit those priorities. Use official pages to check world structure, social tools, and current access terms rather than relying on a map-size claim or an old update promise.
- Check friend compatibility first. Confirm the relevant region, server or World, and platform rules before anyone creates a character.
- Try the play loop. If a trial or demo is offered, test combat and the activities you expect to repeat—not just the introductory story.
- Confirm the ongoing commitment. Verify current restrictions, subscription requirements, and which expansions or editions unlock the content you want.
- Choose the game you want to return to. A good fit is the one whose ordinary sessions suit your preferences, not merely the one with the most advertised features.
