Pick a lower number when you need more light or want a shallower depth of field; pick a higher number when you want more of the scene in focus. These are starting points, not guarantees of a particular blur or sharpness.
What the four aperture numbers mean
The f-number describes the aperture relative to the lens, and it works in the opposite direction from the opening’s size: a lower number means a wider opening. A wider aperture lets in more light and generally produces a shallower depth of field. A higher number means a narrower opening, less light and generally greater depth of field, with other conditions held constant. Nikon explains maximum aperture, and Canon describes depth of field.

Apple lists ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0 for the iPhone 18 Pro’s 24 mm, 48MP Fusion Main camera. ƒ/1.48 is the widest of these settings; ƒ/4.0 is the narrowest. Which setting should you choose?

For a portrait, try a wider setting if you want the subject to stand out against a softer background. For a landscape or a scene where more of the frame should appear sharp, try a narrower setting. These are general photographic starting points, not guaranteed results; Nikon’s guidance on maximum aperture discusses these kinds of choices.

Why the same setting can look different from shot to shot
Aperture is only one influence on depth of field. Focal length, where you focus, how close you are to the subject, and how far the background is from it all affect how much appears sharp. Moving closer to a subject or increasing the distance between subject and background can change the result even when the aperture stays the same. Canon’s depth-of-field guide explains these factors.
Exposure also depends on shutter speed and sensor sensitivity, not aperture alone. Apple says iPhone 18 Pro models provide manual control of aperture, shutter speed and white balance, as well as a histogram for checking exposure. How to pick a setting in practice
- Decide what matters most. If the scene is dim, start with ƒ/1.48 or ƒ/1.8. If keeping more of the subject or scene in focus matters more, start with ƒ/2.8 or ƒ/4.0.
- Set your focus on the subject. Focus position and shooting distance affect depth of field, so the aperture number alone cannot determine what will look sharp.
- Check the background. If you want it softer, try a wider setting and consider the subject-to-background distance. If more of the scene should appear sharp, try a narrower setting.
- Review exposure. A narrower aperture admits less light. Use the camera’s exposure controls and histogram to assess the result; shutter speed also affects exposure.
What Apple says the variable aperture does
Apple describes the iPhone 18 Pro’s variable aperture as adjusting for lighting and depth of field. Its product page says it adjusts automatically for those conditions. Apple also documents manual aperture control on iPhone 18 Pro models, alongside shutter speed and white balance controls, so the camera offers both automatic adjustment and manual tools.
