How to Choose an Indian Data Center Region for a Raspberry Pi Relay to YouTube

There is no evidence-based universal best Indian region for relaying a Raspberry Pi stream to YouTube. Shortlist regions that offer the cloud services you need, then test them from the Pi’s actual network using the same stream settings. Choose the lowest-cost candidate that meets your measured stability and resilience needs—not simply the region that looks closest on a map.

First, define what the cloud host will do

A relay that forwards an already encoded stream has different compute needs from a host that also encodes or transcodes it. The right region may also depend on the instance type, networking, storage, or managed streaming service your design requires. The Pi model, streaming software, resolution, bitrate, and whether the cloud host will encode are not specified here, so determine those before comparing regions.

Make a shortlist only after checking that each candidate region offers the exact instance and other services you need, and that your account can use them. A provider’s regional location list does not establish that every product or instance family is available there.

Which Indian regions can you shortlist?

Provider and candidate location What is established What to verify before deployment
AWS Mumbai (ap-south-1) AWS lists Mumbai as an India region. Availability of the required service and instance in your account.
AWS Hyderabad (ap-south-2) AWS lists Hyderabad as an India region and marks it opt-in. Whether the account can enable the region and whether the required service is available there.
Azure Pune, Chennai, Mumbai, and Hyderabad Microsoft’s August 6, 2026 announcement describes four India regions: Central India in Pune, South India in Chennai, West India in Mumbai, and India South Central in Hyderabad. The Hyderabad region is described as generally available. Availability of the specific Azure service and capacity you need in the chosen region.
Google Cloud Mumbai (asia-south1) Google lists Mumbai for its Live Stream API. Whether that specific API fits your architecture and whether the services it depends on are available as needed.

These locations are candidates, not a performance ranking. Provider service availability and pricing can change; verify the exact service, account access, and current cost immediately before deployment. No provider price comparison is established here.

Benchmark each region from the Pi’s real network

The deciding route begins at the Pi’s access network and ends at YouTube ingestion. It can vary with the origin ISP, routing, endpoint behavior, and time of day. A generic speed test, the region’s advertised network capacity, or geographic distance alone cannot tell you which candidate will perform best for your stream.

  1. Keep the test configuration fixed. Use the same protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in every regional trial. If you change settings between trials, you cannot tell whether a result came from the region or the stream configuration.
  2. Run the relay through each candidate. Test from the Pi’s actual network to the intended YouTube ingest endpoint by way of the candidate cloud host. Record the test time, route latency, sustained upload throughput, and any loss, pauses, or interruptions. A latency probe by itself does not demonstrate that a sustained video stream will be stable.
  3. Use a representative stream. Test with representative motion and audio rather than relying only on a short, idle connection. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health; use Live Control Room’s health indicators and messages as part of each trial.
  4. Repeat at representative operating times. Run trials when the channel is expected to stream, and repeat them under the conditions that matter to your deployment. Record results for each run rather than choosing a region from one favorable sample.
  5. Compare results against your requirements. Assess route latency, sustained upload capacity, interruption behavior, YouTube stream health at the selected bitrate, required service availability, total operating cost, and resilience or recovery needs. Pick the least expensive candidate that clears your stability and resilience requirements.
  6. Re-test after material changes. Changes to the provider, route, or YouTube ingestion behavior can change the outcome. Repeat the comparison if one of those changes or if the stream’s health deteriorates.

Set bitrate and upload headroom for the stream

Choose a quality the full connection can sustain, then use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the actual resolution and frame rate. Supported settings and bitrate ranges vary by configuration, so do not treat an unqualified bitrate copied from another setup as a universal setting. Keep the selected values identical during region comparisons.

  • Broadcom BCM2711, quad-core Cortex-A72 (ARM v8) 64-bit SoC @ 1. 5GHz
  • 2. 4 GHz and 5. 0 GHz IEEE 802. 11b/g/n/ac wireless LAN, Bluetooth 5. 0, BLE
  • 2 × USB 3. 0 ports, 2 x USB 2. 0 Ports
  • 2 × micro HDMI ports supproting up to 4Kp60 video resolution
  • Micro SD card slot for loading operating system and data storage

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. Apply that margin to the connection carrying those streams; a relay arrangement should be evaluated at the relevant upload leg or legs, not by assuming that a cloud region’s location supplies headroom. Monitor the real stream, since a nominal throughput result alone does not establish healthy delivery.

Choose an ingest protocol for the workflow, not a presumed regional advantage

RTMPS

RTMPS is RTMP tunneled through SSL and uses port 443 to a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint. YouTube describes it as a good choice for ordinary user content, particularly when low latency matters. Use the endpoint and stream key from your YouTube live setup; do not substitute a guessed endpoint.

Rank #3
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (2GB)
  • Broadcom BCM2711, Quad core Cortex-A72 (ARM v8) 64-bit SoC @ 1.5GHz
  • 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM (depending on model)
  • 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz IEEE 802.11ac wireless, Bluetooth 5.0, BLE Gigabit Ethernet
  • 2 USB 3.0 ports; 2 USB 2.0 ports.
  • Raspberry Pi standard 40 pin GPIO header (fully backwards compatible with previous boards)

HLS

YouTube supports HLS ingestion, but it has higher latency than RTMP because it sends media in segments. Google’s HLS guidance recommends segments of one to four seconds; shorter segments can lower latency but can increase rebuffering risk and reduce encoding efficiency. Choose HLS when your supported workflow or codec needs it, not on the assumption that it will make a relay faster.

Separate viewer latency from relay network performance

YouTube defines stream latency as the time from camera capture to playback for viewers. Its help guidance says most viewers of low-latency streams experience less than 10 seconds, while most viewers of ultra-low-latency streams experience less than five seconds. These are descriptions of viewer experience, not guarantees for a particular Indian region or for the Pi-to-ingest route.

Ultra-low latency reduces the playback buffer, which can make network or encoder problems more visible as buffering, and it is unavailable for 4K. If choosing a latency mode, balance the viewer experience against the stream’s stability needs. Do not use viewer latency as a proxy for cloud route quality.

Common reasons a regional test can mislead

  • The nearest region wins by assumption: physical distance is only a screening clue; actual routing from the Pi’s ISP to YouTube ingestion is what matters.
  • Trials use different settings: changing bitrate, protocol, codec, or resolution confounds the comparison. Hold them constant.
  • A short speed test looks good: it does not show sustained streaming behavior. Observe a representative live stream and record interruptions and YouTube health messages.
  • A low latency probe is treated as proof: route latency does not establish adequate sustained throughput or a stable stream.
  • A region appears in a geography list: that does not prove the exact instance, managed service, or account access is available. Check the provider’s current service availability.
  • One good run decides the choice: results can vary over time. Repeat during representative operating conditions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than relaying a live camera or Pi-generated stream, StreamNeo is a separate option: it keeps uploaded videos running from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is not a Raspberry Pi relay or a way to go live from a camera.
