Compatibility depends on the entire chain: source, switch, cables, display and any audio equipment.
Start with the direction and number of connections
An HDMI switch most commonly sends one of several sources to a single display. A 2-in/1-out model, for example, lets two devices share one TV or monitor input; a 4-in/1-out model accommodates four. Check the labels and diagram on the exact product: switching between sources for one display is different from sending one source to multiple displays.

Count the devices that need to share the display, including any console, streaming box, computer or disc player. Choose enough inputs for those sources, with room for any near-term addition if convenient. The product examples documented by KanexPro and StarTech.com have two inputs and one output; RATOC’s RS-HDSW41-8K and OREI’s BK-4929 are four-input examples. These are specification examples, not independent recommendations.

Match the exact video mode you need
Do not rely on an HDMI version label or a broad resolution headline alone. Check the specific switch’s detailed specifications for your target resolution and refresh rate together—for example, 4K at 120 Hz, if that is the mode you want to use. Confirm that the feature is listed for the exact model and intended connection, rather than assuming it applies to every product in a brand’s range.

For gaming, check the additional features that matter to your setup:
- VRR: Confirm variable refresh rate pass-through if you use it.
- ALLM: Confirm Auto Low Latency Mode pass-through if you want the display to enter its low-latency mode automatically.
- HDR and color format: Check the HDR formats and any relevant chroma or color-depth requirements against the switch’s specifications.
For example, the KanexPro SW-2X18K page lists 4K/120 Hz, 8K/60 Hz, 48 Gbps, HDCP 2.3, HDR formats, VRR, ALLM, auto selection and USB power. The StarTech.com datasheet lists modes including 4K/120 Hz, VRR and ALLM for its two-input switch. Those are manufacturer specifications for named products; they do not establish that every source, cable and display combination will work.

Check HDCP and the audio path
HDCP support matters when protected video is involved. Compare the switch’s listed HDCP version with the requirements of the source and display, and include any receiver, soundbar or other equipment in the path. A feature listed for one device does not guarantee that every component in a connected setup supports it.

Pick controls that fit where the switch will sit
A manual button is simple when the switch is within reach. A remote can be more practical when the device is behind a TV or inside a cabinet. Automatic source selection can reduce button presses, but behavior varies: check how the model chooses among active sources rather than assuming every auto-switch works the same way.
Manufacturer documentation describes different control options: StarTech.com’s datasheet lists manual and automatic selection, while OREI’s BK-4929 page describes remote, automatic and manual selection. Confirm the control method on the exact model and consider whether its sensor or remote will be usable in your installation.

Account for power and cables
Check whether the switch needs USB power or a separate adapter, and whether the required supply is included. Also check the manufacturer’s cable guidance for the video mode and cable run you intend to use. Cable length recommendations can vary with the signal; a cable that works for a lower-bandwidth mode is not proof that the full chain will handle a higher one.

If a specific device combination is essential, look for a compatibility check that names those devices or confirm the seller’s return terms. RATOC publishes product-specific compatibility information for its RS-HDSW21-8K and RS-HDSW41-8K, but qualifies its cable guidance: it is not a guarantee for every environment.

Use this checklist before buying
- List the HDMI sources that need to share the TV or monitor.
- Confirm the routing direction and choose enough inputs—for example, 2-in/1-out or 4-in/1-out.
- Write down the target resolution and refresh rate, then verify that exact mode on the product’s detailed specification page.
- Check the HDR, VRR, ALLM, HDCP, audio-format and eARC features that your setup actually uses.
- Choose manual, remote or automatic selection based on where the switch will be installed and how it handles active sources.
- Confirm the power arrangement and cable suitability for the intended signal and run.
- For a setup where a particular combination must work, seek a relevant compatibility check or verify return terms rather than treating a feature list as a guarantee.
Read product claims and user reports in context
Specifications and compatibility notes can narrow the choices, but their scope matters. A manufacturer check of named devices under stated conditions is useful evidence for that combination, not proof for every setup. Likewise, a single customer report is an individual experience, not a controlled test: one reviewer on the Marmitek Connect 720 page reports a problem at 120 Hz in their setup. The page also lists 2-in/1-out and 4K/120 Hz support; neither the specification nor one review establishes universal success or failure.
