How to Choose an Event Streaming Platform for Object-Storage Workloads

The right event-streaming platform depends on what “object storage” is supposed to do. A remote tier that still serves Kafka reads, an exported archive used by replay jobs, and a queryable Apache Iceberg table are different architectures with different latency, schema, retention, cost, and recovery behavior.

Choose the read path and retention model first. Then verify the exact platform edition, supported storage providers and Regions, record format, freshness, licensing, migration limits, and the complete destination cost. The documented capabilities of Amazon MSK and Redpanda cover useful but non-equivalent designs; neither is established as a universal best choice.

Start with the workload, not the storage brand

Object storage is a destination technology, not a single feature category. In an event system it can serve three distinct roles:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Remote log tier: older Kafka log segments are offloaded from local broker disks but remain addressable through the streaming platform’s consumer APIs.
  • Archive or export: records are written as objects for independent replay, batch processing, compliance retention, or data movement. Consumers normally read files through storage or processing tools rather than ordinary Kafka offsets.
  • Analytical table: events are converted into a table format such as Apache Iceberg, with metadata and files that query engines can use.

These roles are not interchangeable. An archive sink does not automatically provide remote Kafka reads. A remote log tier is not automatically a query-optimized lakehouse table. If your workload needs two or three behaviors, plan separate delivery paths and assign each one its own retention, failure handling, and cost budget.

Eight questions that determine the right platform

1. What must a reader be able to do?

Write down the read operation in concrete terms. “Read events later” is too vague to choose a design.

  • If applications must seek to an old Kafka offset and continue consuming with normal Kafka clients, evaluate native tiered storage and its remote-read behavior.
  • If a data-engineering job should scan files, replay a date range, or process data independently of the brokers, evaluate object export, file layout, compression, and delivery recovery.
  • If analysts need SQL queries, snapshots, schema evolution, and table metadata, evaluate an Iceberg integration, catalog behavior, commit semantics, and query-engine compatibility.

2. How fresh must the data be?

Set a measurable limit from event production to availability in the target system. A remote log tier may expose segments after offload; an export pipeline may make files available on its own batching schedule; a table integration may publish committed snapshots on a configured interval. The acceptable delay should be written into the design and tested under peak load rather than inferred from a product label.

3. Which retention is local and which is remote?

Define separate policies for broker disks, remote objects, table snapshots, and delete markers. A cheaper remote tier can support months of history, while local disks retain only the period needed for low-latency consumers. An archive may need immutable retention and independent lifecycle rules. A table may require snapshot expiration and compaction. Make the delete path explicit: deleting a Kafka topic, expiring a remote segment, and removing an Iceberg snapshot are different operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. What format and schema path is required?

Record whether producers emit JSON, Avro, or another format, and identify the schema authority. An export can preserve the original bytes, convert records, or write an envelope with metadata. An Iceberg destination needs a column schema and a conversion process. Check compatibility with your schema registry, handling of schema evolution, nullability, defaults, and malformed records before selecting a platform.

5. Where may data and control-plane resources live?

Confirm supported object stores, account boundaries, Regions, and cross-Region or multi-region requirements for the exact edition and deployment mode. A feature documented for one broker type or service variant is not evidence that it works on every configuration. Include network paths, private connectivity, encryption keys, and access policies in the review.

6. Who operates delivery and recovery?

Determine whether brokers provide native delivery, or whether you must run connectors, stream jobs, or scheduled compaction. Specify retries, idempotency, dead-letter handling, alerting, replay procedures, and ownership of schema failures. “Managed” does not remove the need to monitor lag, object creation, table commits, and storage errors.

7. What can be moved later?

Ask how topics, remote segments, schemas, table metadata, and object prefixes would move to another bucket, provider, or platform. Exported files are often easier to copy than a vendor-specific remote-log index. Iceberg is an open table format, but catalogs, partitioning, snapshots, and proprietary ingestion behavior still affect portability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. What is the full cost?

Model broker capacity plus object-storage bytes, requests, data transfer, lifecycle transitions, compaction or maintenance, connector or processing capacity, monitoring, and query scans. For table destinations, include metadata and maintenance charges as well as query-engine costs. Comparing broker prices alone can select an architecture that is cheap to run but expensive to query or recover.

Documented design options

Design Primary read path Documented capability Important boundary
Native tiered log storage Kafka API, including older data Redpanda documents automatic log-segment offload, configurable local retention, and remote reads. Provider or bucket migration is unsupported in the cited Redpanda documentation; verify the target release and contract.
Object archive/export Storage objects consumed by replay or batch tools Amazon MSK documents delivery to a general-purpose S3 bucket for storage, replay, and downstream batch processing. This is an exported-object path, not a remote Kafka log tier.
Streaming Iceberg table SQL and table-aware engines Amazon MSK documents continuous materialization of selected topics as Apache Iceberg tables on S3 Tables. The documented route requires MSK Provisioned clusters with Express brokers and has specific account, Region, schema, freshness, and dead-letter requirements.
Iceberg topic integration Iceberg readers plus Spark or Flink Redpanda version 24.3 documentation describes storing topic data in Iceberg and integrating with Spark and Flink. The cited page is versioned; confirm current release, edition, and managed-service support.

Amazon MSK when you need an S3 archive or export

AWS documents Amazon MSK data delivery to Amazon S3 for archiving topic data, replay, and downstream batch processing. The documented capability is useful when object files are the durable hand-off between streaming and data-processing systems. AWS also describes the service as avoiding a separately managed connector fleet for this documented delivery path.

How to evaluate the export path

  1. Define the consumer. Identify the replay tool, batch engine, or compliance process that will read the objects. Specify whether it needs original Kafka keys, headers, timestamps, partition IDs, and offsets.
  2. Choose a file and key layout. AWS recommends time-based key templates aligned with downstream queries. Review the guidance in AWS’s object-layout documentation, then validate partition depth and prefix cardinality against your actual query patterns.
  3. Select compression for the payload. AWS identifies GZIP or ZSTD as options for text payloads. Test decompression support and file-size behavior in every downstream tool before committing to one.
  4. Match storage class to access frequency. Frequent replay, occasional incident recovery, and long-term compliance have different request and retrieval patterns. Choose the class using measured access expectations, not the lowest byte price.
  5. Specify failure handling. Decide how delivery failures are surfaced, retried, alerted, and reconciled. A replay process needs a way to detect missing time windows or incomplete files.
  6. Test downstream file handling. Validate late-arriving objects, partial batches, duplicate delivery, partition pruning, and schema changes. Object creation order is not a substitute for event-time ordering.

This architecture is a good fit when storage tools, batch jobs, or replay services should operate independently from the brokers. It is the wrong assumption if applications must transparently fetch old records through Kafka offsets; use a remote log tier for that requirement.

Amazon MSK streaming tables for Iceberg analytics

A separate AWS feature, Amazon MSK streaming tables to Apache Iceberg, continuously materializes selected Kafka topics as Iceberg tables on Amazon S3 Tables. The documented route converts supported JSON records using AWS Glue Schema Registry, writes Parquet files, registers the Iceberg table, and requires an S3 dead-letter queue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documented prerequisites and limits

  • The cluster must be an MSK Provisioned cluster with Express brokers.
  • Standard brokers and MSK Serverless are not supported for this feature.
  • The cluster, S3 Tables bucket, schema registry, and dead-letter queue must be in the same AWS account and Region.
  • The documented freshness configuration is 5–15 minutes, so this path is not a sub-minute analytical sink.
  • Records produced before the feature is enabled are not backfilled.
  • Each configuration creates a new table; the documented feature does not deliver into an existing Iceberg table.

Implementation questions to settle before enabling it

  1. Confirm the broker type, account, Region, and S3 Tables location against the current AWS supported-configurations page.
  2. Register and test the JSON schemas in AWS Glue Schema Registry, including optional fields, evolution rules, and rejected-record behavior.
  3. Provision and secure the S3 dead-letter queue. Define who examines failures and how corrected records are replayed.
  4. Choose topic-to-table mappings and document the fact that enabling the configuration does not backfill earlier events.
  5. Measure the 5–15 minute freshness window under normal and peak throughput, then set alerts for delayed commits.
  6. Verify table registration, Parquet output, partitioning, snapshot retention, and query-engine compatibility.

AWS states that standard S3 Tables storage, request, and maintenance charges apply, along with standard AWS data-transfer charges. Include those destination costs in the design. AWS also publishes vendor-specific throughput or savings claims on the feature page; treat such figures as AWS claims tied to its stated conditions and publication version, not as independent benchmarks. No independent comparative benchmark establishes a winner between platforms.

Redpanda Tiered Storage for Kafka-style historical reads

Redpanda’s Tiered Storage documentation describes automatic offload of log segments to object storage, configurable local retention, and remote reads through the Kafka API. The page lists S3, GCS, Azure Blob Storage, and ADLS as supported storage targets.

When this model fits

  • Consumers must continue using Kafka clients and offsets while older segments live outside broker disks.
  • You want local retention sized for hot traffic while keeping a longer history remotely.
  • Operations can accept the platform’s remote-read performance and segment lifecycle behavior.

Licensing and migration cautions

The cited version 26.1 documentation says Tiered Storage requires an Enterprise license. Verify the requirement against the release and contract you intend to deploy; versioned documentation is not a substitute for current commercial terms.

The same documentation warns that migration between storage providers or buckets is unsupported. It also cautions against repeatedly disabling and re-enabling remote write because doing so can create inconsistency or data gaps. Treat a bucket or provider change as a planned migration project: test restoration, preserve the original data until validation completes, and obtain a current vendor-supported procedure before changing production settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operational tests to run

  1. Produce a controlled set of records and wait for segments to offload.
  2. Reduce local retention enough to force reads from remote storage, then consume by offset with ordinary Kafka clients.
  3. Measure fetch latency, throughput, consumer lag, and behavior during temporary object-store errors.
  4. Exercise topic expansion, retention changes, broker replacement, and restart scenarios.
  5. Verify monitoring distinguishes local-disk pressure, remote-read failures, and missing segments.

Tiered storage solves historical Kafka access. It does not by itself produce Iceberg tables, schema-registry conversions, or query-optimized Parquet layouts.

Redpanda Iceberg Topics for open-table analytics

Redpanda’s version 24.3 Iceberg Topics documentation describes storing topic data in the Iceberg open table format and integrating with Spark and Flink. Because the source is release-specific, confirm the current feature matrix, edition, and managed-service availability before making it the basis of a production design.

Questions for an Iceberg integration review

  • Which record formats and schema-registry integrations are supported by the target release?
  • How are partitions selected, and can they support the expected event-time and query filters?
  • What is the commit and snapshot behavior during retries, broker outages, and schema changes?
  • Which catalog is used, and can Spark, Flink, and the intended query engine share metadata safely?
  • How are small files compacted, snapshots expired, and failed writes reconciled?

Do not infer that an Iceberg topic feature has the same prerequisites, freshness, or table-creation behavior as the MSK streaming-tables route. Compare the exact implementation rather than the shared “Iceberg” label.

Choosing among archive, tiered log, and table designs

Choose native tiered storage when Kafka access is the requirement

Select this path when applications need offset-based reads of historical segments and you want local broker disks to cover only the hot window. Confirm supported providers, licensing, remote-read behavior, failure recovery, and migration limits before signing off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose object export when files are the integration contract

Select an archive when independent batch jobs, replay utilities, or compliance systems should consume objects without depending on broker availability. Spend design effort on key layout, compression, storage class, delivery completeness, and duplicate or missing-file detection.

Choose Iceberg when tables are the product

Select an Iceberg path when analysts and data applications need table metadata, snapshots, schema evolution, and SQL-oriented access. Validate conversion, catalog, commit, freshness, compaction, and query costs—not merely whether a vendor mentions Iceberg.

Use more than one path for mixed requirements

A common design keeps a short hot Kafka window, offloads older segments for Kafka-compatible recovery, exports a durable object archive for independent replay, and materializes selected topics into Iceberg for analytics. Keep the paths logically separate: each has its own freshness objective, retention policy, alerts, and recovery runbook. Avoid assuming that one copy can satisfy all three read patterns efficiently.

Cost model: calculate the destination, not just the brokers

Build a worksheet that follows one event from production through every retained copy. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Broker instances, storage, and network capacity.
  • Object bytes, request counts, lifecycle transitions, retrieval fees, and replication.
  • Data transfer between Regions, accounts, brokers, processing jobs, and query engines.
  • Connector, stream-processing, compaction, and schema-registry capacity where applicable.
  • Iceberg metadata, Parquet maintenance, snapshot retention, and table-query scans.
  • Monitoring, alerting, dead-letter processing, and staff time for operations.

Use separate scenarios for hot reads, incident replay, routine batch scans, and long-term retention. A design with fewer broker disks can still cost more if it creates excessive object requests, cross-Region transfer, small-file maintenance, or repeated table scans.

Portability and migration checklist

  1. Export representative topics, schemas, headers, keys, timestamps, and offsets in a format another platform can interpret.
  2. Document object prefixes, naming conventions, compression, encryption, lifecycle rules, and ownership.
  3. For Iceberg, preserve table metadata, snapshots, manifests, partition specs, and catalog identifiers.
  4. Test a restore into a separate account or Region, including a partial time-range replay.
  5. Record which components are vendor-specific: remote-log indexes, delivery checkpoints, schema conversion, catalog APIs, and monitoring integrations.
  6. Set a migration freeze and rollback point before changing providers, buckets, broker modes, or remote-write settings.

Redpanda’s cited Tiered Storage documentation specifically warns that migration between storage providers or buckets is unsupported. That limitation should be treated as a procurement and exit-risk item, not discovered during an incident.

Failure modes to test before production

Remote data is present but consumers cannot read it

Check whether the design is an archive export rather than a remote log tier. Validate client permissions, remote-read settings, object availability, and the retention boundary. An object existing in a bucket does not guarantee Kafka offset access.

Replay finds gaps or duplicates

Compare expected event-time windows with object keys and manifests. Account for batching, retries, late files, and at-least-once delivery. Preserve partition and offset metadata when replay correctness depends on it, and make the replay job idempotent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Iceberg tables lag behind the topic

Measure production-to-commit time, not merely object arrival. Inspect schema conversion failures, dead-letter volume, commit retries, small-file pressure, and query-catalog visibility. For the MSK streaming-tables route, verify that the documented 5–15 minute freshness setting is configured and that all required resources share the account and Region.

Records are rejected after a schema change

Test additions, removals, type changes, nullability, and malformed JSON before rollout. Confirm registry compatibility rules and the operator workflow for dead-letter records. Never treat a successful broker publish as proof that the destination table can accept the record.

Storage costs rise unexpectedly

Break the bill into bytes, requests, retrieval, transfer, maintenance, and queries. Look for high-cardinality prefixes, tiny files, repeated scans, overlong snapshots, or cross-Region traffic. Adjust layout, batching, lifecycle, and compaction only after verifying that the change preserves replay and query requirements.

A practical selection sequence

  1. Write one sentence describing the required read path: Kafka offsets, object files, tables, or a combination.
  2. Set freshness, local-retention, remote-retention, and recovery objectives with measurable limits.
  3. List accepted providers, Regions, accounts, formats, schema registries, catalogs, and query engines.
  4. Eliminate features whose broker type, edition, license, or Region does not match the deployment.
  5. Run a production-shaped test with peak-rate traffic, schema evolution, object-store errors, and replay.
  6. Price the complete design, including destination requests, transfer, maintenance, and query behavior.
  7. Document migration, restore, dead-letter, and incident procedures before enabling long retention.

The winning platform is the one whose documented behavior matches your required read path and whose operational and exit costs remain acceptable. Treat tiered logs, archives, and Iceberg tables as separate products even when one vendor offers all three.
