How to Choose an Energy-Efficient Refrigerator for Your Home

Choose a refrigerator that fits your kitchen opening and your household’s real storage needs, then compare the EnergyGuide kWh/year estimates of similarly sized, similarly configured models. Use ENERGY STAR qualification as a screening signal, not as a substitute for checking the exact model’s label, dimensions, price and features. A smaller, well-filled refrigerator can cost less to buy and run than an oversized model, while layout choices such as side-by-side doors or through-the-door ice can increase energy use.

Start with the three decisions that determine efficiency

Before comparing brands or features, settle three constraints:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Capacity: Buy enough usable space for your shopping pattern, but not volume that will remain empty.
  • Fit: Confirm the opening, surrounding clearances, door swing and delivery path using the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
  • Energy use: Compare EnergyGuide annual electricity estimates among models with roughly the same capacity and configuration.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) summarizes the sizing principle this way: “Select refrigerators that are an appropriate size for the number of people and level of use.” Its warning is equally direct: “Oversized refrigerators will increase purchase costs and waste energy.”

Why the EnergyGuide label matters more than a showroom impression

Refrigerator efficiency is not determined by a single feature or by the ENERGY STAR logo alone. The yellow EnergyGuide label provides a standardized estimate of yearly electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh) and an estimated operating cost. Use the kWh figure to compare models, because the dollar estimate on the label depends on an assumed electricity price that may not match your utility rate.

  • Removable Shelves & Crisper Drawer: Detachable glass shelves, give you more space to store your food, which can keep the inside not in random. 2L bottle rack allows you to put daily milk and drinks bottles.

DOE’s 2021 Consumer Guide to Kitchen Appliances explains the budgeting issue succinctly: “Every appliance has two price tags: what you pay to purchase it, and what you pay for the energy and water it uses.” Include both when deciding whether a more efficient model is worth its purchase premium.

How to read the label

  • Estimated yearly electricity use: This is the most useful number for comparing similar refrigerators. Lower kWh/year generally means lower electricity use under the test conditions.
  • Estimated yearly operating cost: Treat it as a standardized comparison, not a promise of your bill. Your rate, climate, room temperature, usage and settings can change actual cost.
  • Model configuration and capacity: Verify that the labels you compare describe similar cubic footage, freezer arrangement and ice-making equipment. A smaller refrigerator will often use less electricity simply because it has less space to cool.

Convert the label to your household’s electricity rate

Use this calculation when your utility rate is available:

Annual energy cost = EnergyGuide kWh/year × your electricity price per kWh.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, a label showing 500 kWh/year would cost about $100 per year at a $0.20/kWh rate. That is an arithmetic illustration, not a prediction for a particular model. If your bill has time-of-use rates, demand charges or separate supply and delivery charges, use the rate that best represents the incremental cost of the refrigerator’s electricity.

Choose capacity without cooling empty space

There is no universal cubic-foot formula that works for every household. Capacity depends on how often you shop, how much fresh food you keep, whether you freeze bulk purchases, accessibility needs and the physical limits of your kitchen.

  • Top Freezer: Our deep freezer has a freezer shelf ideal for frozen meals, packaged meats, leftovers, ice cream, and other foods. The wire freezer shelf is also removable to make space for larger items

DOE’s 2021 consumer guide identifies 16 to 20 cubic feet as typical of the most energy-efficient full-size refrigerator-freezers. That is a historical rule of thumb, not an ideal size for every home. A household that cooks daily may need more usable refrigerator space; a household that shops frequently and freezes little may need less.

Use these questions to set a practical target

  • How many days of fresh food do you normally store between shopping trips?
  • Do you freeze meat, prepared meals or garden produce in large quantities?
  • Are shelves and bins accessible to every user, including children or people with limited reach?
  • Will door bins, drawers and the freezer arrangement provide usable organization, or will nominal capacity be lost to awkward shapes?
  • Can the kitchen opening and delivery route accept the size without removing doors, trim or railings?

Do not pay for an extra-large cabinet merely because it has a larger advertised capacity. Measure the space you can actually use and compare the EnergyGuide labels of models that fit that target.

Measure the opening and delivery route before shopping

Refrigerator dimensions are not interchangeable. Record the opening’s width, height and depth, then check the floor level, nearby cabinets, wall position and the direction in which doors must swing. Also measure hallways, stairwells, elevators and exterior doors on the delivery route.

  1. Measure the opening: Take width measurements at the top, middle and bottom; measure height at both sides; and measure depth from the back wall to the front edge of surrounding cabinets.
  2. Record functional clearances: Note the space needed for door hinges, handles, drawers and ventilation. Do not assume that a refrigerator’s listed cabinet depth includes handles or doors.
  3. Check the installation manual: Use the exact model’s instructions for required side, top and rear clearances. DOE’s general guidance does not establish universal clearance values.
  4. Plan the door swing: Make sure doors can open far enough for drawers and shelves, and verify whether hinges can be reversed if your layout requires it.
  5. Confirm delivery access: Ask the seller or installer how the unit will be moved and whether doors must be removed. Include any disposal or installation charges in the budget.

Pick a layout, then verify its label

Configuration affects both convenience and energy use. DOE FEMP says side-by-side refrigerator-freezers and models with through-the-door ice typically use more energy than other models. The 2021 DOE guide says top-mounted freezer models use less energy than some bottom-freezer or side-by-side models.

Those statements describe tendencies, not guarantees. A highly efficient side-by-side can use less electricity than an inefficient top-freezer of a different size. Compare actual EnergyGuide labels for similarly sized models before making a final choice.

Configuration or feature What the DOE guidance indicates What to check before buying
Top-freezer Often uses less energy than some bottom-freezer or side-by-side designs. Compare kWh/year with other models of similar capacity; confirm that the freezer’s location is accessible for your household.
Bottom-freezer Can be more convenient for frequently used fresh food, but the guide does not establish a universal energy advantage. Check the exact label and the energy cost of any extra drawers, fans or ice equipment.
Side-by-side Typically uses more energy than other layouts according to DOE FEMP guidance. Check whether narrow compartments meet your storage needs and whether the convenience justifies the measured kWh/year.
Through-the-door ice or water Typically increases energy use compared with models without that feature. Compare otherwise similar models and account for maintenance, filter and repair requirements.
Door-within-door or specialty compartments No general energy result is established in the cited DOE guidance. Rely on the model’s EnergyGuide estimate rather than assuming the feature saves energy.

Use ENERGY STAR as a shortlist filter

ENERGY STAR qualification is useful for narrowing the field, but check the current status of the exact model number. DOE’s 2021 consumer guide states that ENERGY STAR-qualified refrigerators use 9% less energy than standard models. That is a guide-level comparison from 2021, not a guaranteed percentage for every current refrigerator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After finding a qualified model, verify its current listing, capacity, configuration, EnergyGuide estimate and dimensions. Model status and availability can change, and a retailer’s description may omit a suffix or variant that has a different label.

Do not confuse standards compliance with best-in-class efficiency

All refrigerators sold in the United States must meet federal efficiency standards, while ENERGY STAR identifies products that meet a higher program threshold. DOE’s refrigeration-products page says amended standards took effect on May 16, 2024. Depending on product class, manufacturers must comply with the new requirements by January 31, 2029, or January 31, 2030. DOE links the standard to 10 CFR 430.32(a) and the test procedure to 10 CFR 430, Subpart B, Appendices A and B, and notes that planned milestones may change.

These dates govern manufacturers; they are not a replacement for comparing the labels on refrigerators available to you today. A model meeting the legal minimum can still use more electricity than another model of similar size that has a lower EnergyGuide estimate.

  • Purchase price and sales tax.
  • Delivery, installation, water-line work and required accessories.
  • Removal or disposal of the old refrigerator.
  • Estimated annual electricity cost using your local rate.
  • Expected filter, ice-maker or service expenses when those features are important to your decision.
  • Any rebate or incentive that you have confirmed for your location and exact model.

DOE FEMP provides an illustrative federal-facility comparison, not a household forecast. Its example assumes a 0.099 USD/kWh electricity price, a 2023 ENERGY STAR 18.1-cubic-foot top-freezer model and a modeled 16.2-year product life. Under those assumptions, the example shows $45 in lifetime energy-cost savings for the ENERGY STAR example and $46 for the best available example. Your purchase prices, electricity rate, usage and service life may be different, so do not reuse those dollar figures as your expected payback.

Calculate a purchase premium payback only with your own numbers

  1. Subtract the lower-priced model’s annual kWh from the higher-priced model’s annual kWh.
  2. Multiply the annual kWh difference by your electricity price.
  3. Divide the higher purchase price, plus any extra installation cost, by the annual savings.
  4. Recheck the result if either model’s price, incentive or electricity rate changes.

If the calculated annual saving is small, the premium may not be recovered during the time you expect to own the refrigerator. You may still choose the efficient model for lower emissions or future rate protection, but make that a conscious decision rather than assuming a guaranteed payback.

Check rebates before finalizing the budget

Some utilities and local programs offer rebates for ENERGY STAR-qualified refrigerators. DOE directs consumers to the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder and to their local utility for current terms. Availability, eligibility, rebate amount and deadlines depend on location, program funding and the exact model. Treat an incentive as $0 in your budget until you have verified those conditions and saved the required documentation.

Features that can change energy use and usefulness

Convenience features often add motors, heaters, fans or openings that affect consumption. Through-the-door ice is the clearest example identified by DOE. Evaluate each feature against how often you will use it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Automatic ice: Useful for frequent ice use, but compare labels with and without the feature when possible.
  • Water dispenser: Consider the energy estimate, filter replacement and the need for a water connection.
  • Rapid-cooling or rapid-freezing modes: These are intended for temporary use. Follow the manual and return to normal operation when the food is chilled.
  • Smart controls and displays: They may improve monitoring, but the cited DOE guidance does not establish a general energy saving. Judge them by the exact label and your need for the function.
  • Flexible drawers: Confirm whether a drawer can be set to refrigerator or freezer temperature and whether the arrangement reduces the main compartment’s usable space.

Set temperatures with a thermometer

DOE FEMP advises setting the refrigerator compartment between 36°F and 40°F and the freezer between −5°F and 0°F. The 2021 DOE consumer guide gives a refrigerator range of 35°F to 38°F and a freezer setting of 0°F. These are slightly different source ranges; use the appliance manual and verify the actual temperature with an inexpensive appliance thermometer when the refrigerator does not display it.

Improve placement and daily habits

  • Keep doors closed as much as practical and decide what you need before opening them.
  • Place the refrigerator away from ovens, direct sunlight and other heat sources.
  • Leave the rear space specified in the installation instructions; the 2021 guide refers generally to allowing a few inches behind the unit.
  • Check door gaskets for gaps, tears or areas where paper slips out easily when the door is closed.
  • On older models, clean coils according to the manufacturer’s manual. Do not remove covers or use methods the manual prohibits.
  • Do not block internal vents with packages, because restricted airflow can create warm spots and force longer run times.

These actions cannot turn an oversized or inefficient refrigerator into an efficient one, but they can prevent avoidable consumption and temperature problems.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by cubic feet alone

Advertised capacity does not tell you how much space is convenient to use. Compare shelf depth, drawer arrangement and freezer access, then match the total to your shopping habits.

Comparing unlike models

A side-by-side with an ice dispenser should not be judged against a smaller top-freezer without noting the configuration difference. Compare close capacities and layouts first, then decide whether the convenience is worth the energy and price difference.

Assuming ENERGY STAR guarantees the lowest bill

The qualification is a screening signal. Your final choice still depends on the exact model’s current label, your electricity rate, installation and use.

Ignoring installation details

A refrigerator that technically fits the cabinet opening may not open its doors, clear a wall or pass through the delivery route. Confirm all measurements before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting an unverified rebate

Programs can have geographic, model, income, recycling or date restrictions. Verify the terms before reducing your budget.

Final buying sequence

  1. Measure the opening, clearances and delivery path.
  2. Estimate the capacity and freezer arrangement your household actually needs.
  3. Shortlist models with similar capacity and configuration.
  4. Read each current EnergyGuide label and rank the kWh/year figures.
  5. Check ENERGY STAR status for the exact model number.
  6. Calculate annual cost using your electricity rate.
  7. Add delivery, installation, disposal and confirmed incentives to the purchase comparison.
  8. Choose the model that meets your storage and access needs without paying to cool unnecessary volume.
