Choose an electric weed eater—also called a string trimmer or line trimmer—by matching its power source, cutting capacity and handling to your yard. A corded model can suit a small, reachable area with an outdoor outlet; a battery-powered model gives you more freedom to move, but requires planning for runtime, charging and battery cost. From there, compare the exact model’s line, head, weight, compatibility and safety features rather than relying on voltage or a broad “best” label.
Start with corded versus battery-powered
The first question is whether you can comfortably reach all the areas you need to trim from an outdoor outlet, or whether a cord would get in the way. Neither power source is right for every yard.

Choose corded for a small, reachable work area
A corded electric trimmer draws power from the mains, so you do not have to stop for a depleted battery or wait for a recharge. Consumer Reports’ buying guide describes corded models as a fit for a small yard and trimming within roughly 100 feet of an outlet; Consumer NZ also notes they may suit tidying patches in smaller yards. That distance is a guide, not a guarantee: usable reach depends on the tool, extension cord and layout. You must manage the cord as you work so it does not snag or enter the cutting path. A cordless trimmer avoids the extension cord, making it easier to reach distant edges and work around obstacles. The tradeoff is that each battery has limited runtime and needs time to recharge. Check whether the listing includes a battery and charger or sells only the bare tool. If you already own a compatible battery-platform tool, a shared battery may reduce the cost of adding a trimmer; it also means checking compatibility carefully before buying.

Do not use voltage alone to predict how long a trimmer will work. Voltage indicates battery power, while amp-hours (Ah) indicate capacity. In its December 2025 guide, Consumer NZ reported 18–60V batteries, 2.0–5.2Ah capacities and runtimes of 12–40+ minutes across the models it covered. Those are ranges from its sample, not a promise for a particular tool or yard. Consumer Reports gives about 30 minutes per charge as a rough guide, not a model-specific guarantee. Cutting conditions and the particular tool affect actual working time. Consumer NZ; Consumer Reports.
Match cutting capacity to the yard
Think about both the area to cover and the kind of growth you need to cut. A specification that improves coverage in an open area can make precise work around plants harder.
Cutting swath: coverage versus control
The cutting swath is the width cleared in one pass. A wider swath can cover open ground more quickly, while a narrower one may be easier to control around beds, trees and delicate plants. Consumer Reports uses around 15 inches or more as an example of a wider swath; treat it as a comparison point, not a required minimum. Consumer Reports.

Line diameter: follow the exact model specification
Check the product specification or owner’s manual for the approved line diameter. Thicker line can be more durable for tougher growth, but line that is too thick for a trimmer can bog down its motor. Line that is too thin may cut with less power. Do not assume that a size that fits one trimmer is suitable for another. Consumer Reports; Pro Tool Reviews.
Feed system and head: consider reloading
The feed system determines how fresh line becomes available as it wears down:
- Bump-feed: releases line when you tap the head on the ground.
- Auto-feed: dispenses line as needed.
- Fixed-line: takes short pieces of line rather than a wound spool; loading can be simpler, but pieces may need replacing more often.
Compare the effort of reloading and the availability of compatible replacement heads or spools, especially if spool winding is a chore you want to avoid. Follow the manual for the line and head specified for your model. Consumer Reports; Consumer NZ; Pro Tool Reviews.

- 6200 RPM: The POWERDRIVE Transmission delivers more power from the motor to the cutting string so you can get the job done faster
- The Automatic Feed Spool - AFS automatically feeds trimmer line when needed with no bumping required
- 2-in-1 Trim or Edge - easily converts from trimmer to edger in seconds

Edging and attachments: verify fit
Some heads swivel to help trim along lawn edges. Multi-attachment systems can let one powerhead handle other jobs, but connections are not universal. Before buying an attachment or a replacement head, confirm that it fits the exact powerhead and that the manufacturer permits its use. Consumer Reports; Pro Tool Reviews.

Check comfort and control, not just listed weight
You carry a trimmer while operating it, so total working weight, balance and reach affect how manageable it feels. Compare weight with the battery installed—not just the tool-only figure—along with shaft length, handle adjustment and any included shoulder strap or harness. If possible, hold the trimmer in its normal cutting position before purchase. A tool can feel tiring when poorly balanced even if its listed weight looks reasonable.
A curved shaft is generally shorter and can be easier to maneuver around obstacles. A straight shaft usually offers more reach, including beneath shrubs. These are useful tendencies to compare against your yard’s layout, not guarantees of comfort for every user. Consumer Reports engineer David Trezza advises considering “weight and how easy it is to handle.” Consumer Reports; Consumer NZ; Pro Tool Reviews.

Inspect the guard and the space around the cutting head. Guards deflect some debris, and a gap between the head and shaft can collect tall grass. Keep the guard fitted; removing it is not a safe way to improve visibility. Consumer Reports; Consumer NZ.

- If you own a battery already, verify that the manufacturer lists it as compatible with this trimmer.
- Check the maker’s runtime estimate and charging needs against the work you expect to do; decide whether you need a spare battery.
- Look up the price and availability of a compatible replacement battery.
- Use the manual to identify the specified line diameter, head and replacement spool.
- Check the current warranty terms for the tool and battery separately; do not assume their coverage is identical.
- Count attachments as useful only if they fit the powerhead and meet a real need in your yard.

String-trimmer line can throw debris. Keep the guard installed, wear eye protection, gloves, long pants and closed-toe footwear, and keep children, pets and other bystanders away from the work area. A quick way to compare two models
Put the specifications that matter to your yard side by side. A model wins only if its tradeoffs suit the work you actually do.
| Compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Power source | Outlet and cord reach, or battery runtime and charging | Sets where you can work and whether interruptions are likely. |
| Cutting capacity | Swath, approved line size and fit for your vegetation | Balances coverage, cutting demands and control. |
| Battery ownership | Ah, kit contents, charge time, platform and replacement cost | Determines usable work time and long-term cost. |
| Handling | Weight with battery, balance, shaft reach and handle or harness adjustment | Affects fatigue, access and control. |
| Usability | Feed system, reloading, edging and compatible attachments | Shapes routine convenience and whether accessories will fit. |
| Safety and maintenance | Guard, manual, compatible line or spool and current warranty terms | Helps prevent unsafe operation and incompatible purchases. |
Verify current specifications, battery compatibility, kit contents and warranty for the exact model before purchase; these can differ between products and listings.
