Choose an electric guitar by comparing the complete setup cost, the sounds and controls you want, how the instrument feels in your hands, and the condition of the specific guitar—not by searching for one universally “best” model. If you do not already own an amplifier and cable, include them in your budget; then try the guitar and check that its controls, tuning, and strings feel right.

Set a budget for the whole setup

An electric guitar needs amplification to be heard as intended. Before comparing guitar prices, list what you already own and what you still need: a guitar, a practice amp, and an instrument cable. A starter bundle can keep costs within a set budget, but compare its contents with your list so you do not pay for duplicate equipment. Fender’s beginner guitar guide discusses budgeting for an amp or cable and considering bundles.

Keep some room in the budget for a setup or adjustment if the instrument needs one. Prices, model lineups, and availability change, so treat model examples and prices on buying guides as dated references rather than current offers.

Choose pickups and controls for the sounds you want

Pickups and their locations affect the sound you can select, while the switch and other controls determine how easily you can move among those options. These are useful ways to narrow a choice, not rules that restrict a guitar to one genre. Yamaha’s guide to choosing an electric guitar explains how pickup position and combinations change the sound.

Two-pickup and three-pickup layouts

A typical Telecaster-style layout uses two pickups and a three-way switch, while a Strat-style layout commonly uses three pickups and a five-way switch. The first offers a more straightforward set of selections; the second provides more pickup combinations to explore. Fender outlines these layouts in its beginner electric guitar guide.

Single coils and humbuckers

Single-coil and humbucker pickups offer different tonal options. For example, an HSS configuration—one humbucker at the bridge and two single coils—gives a player a higher-output bridge option alongside single-coil choices. It can be worth considering if you want flexibility that includes higher-gain sounds, but it is not a requirement for playing rock or any other style.

Try the neck, scale, and body for comfort

Specifications can help you make a shortlist, but they cannot tell you how a particular neck or body will feel. Try the instrument while standing with a strap as well as seated. Play a few common chord shapes, move up the fretboard, and bend a string. Notice whether the neck feels comfortable, the frets are easy to reach, the body sits naturally, and the weight feels manageable.

Scale length and neck feel

Scale length—the vibrating string length from the nut to the bridge—affects string feel. Yamaha describes longer scales as tighter-feeling and shorter scales as having lower tension that can make bending feel easier. Its guide gives examples of 25.5-inch scales on Fender and Yamaha Pacifica guitars, 24.75-inch scales on Gibson and Yamaha Revstar guitars, and 25-inch scales on many PRS models. These are examples, not guarantees for every guitar in those ranges or brands. A shorter scale is not automatically better for smaller hands; try the guitar rather than choosing by a single measurement.

Body shape and construction

Solidbody, semi-hollowbody, and hollowbody guitars are all valid options. Sweetwater’s electric guitar buying guide describes solidbodies as stable, versatile, and more resistant to feedback at higher volumes. A semi-hollow or hollowbody may suit your preferences, but consider where and how loudly you play as well as the instrument’s comfort. Body construction alone does not determine tone: pickups, amplifier, effects, and playing technique contribute too.

Check the individual guitar before you buy

Whether you are buying new or used, test the instrument rather than relying only on its model name or specifications. Tune it first if you can, then work through this checklist:

  • Play open strings and fretted notes in several parts of the neck. Listen for persistent buzzing or rattling, and notice whether notes sound and feel consistent.
  • Move the pickup selector through its positions and test the volume and tone controls. Confirm that each works and listen for unwanted noise.
  • Pay attention to tuning stability while playing, string feel, and whether the action—the strings’ height above the frets—feels comfortable.
  • Check whether the neck and body feel comfortable seated and standing, including on a strap if one is available.

Some buzzing, uncomfortable string height, or other setup issues may be adjustable; they do not automatically mean a guitar is unsuitable. Fender’s setup support information covers neck relief, string height, pickup height, electronics, and rattles or buzzing. Correct setup measurements vary by model, so consult that guitar’s manual or ask a qualified technician. If you are new to guitars, do not casually turn the truss rod—the adjustment used to change neck relief.

Make the comparison that fits you

Use the same questions for each candidate so that a familiar brand or a long feature list does not distract from the factors that affect your own playing:

  • Total cost: What do you still need beyond the guitar, and what exactly is included in any bundle?
  • Sound and workflow: Do the pickups, selector positions, and controls give you useful choices without unnecessary complexity?
  • Physical fit: Is the weight, body shape, neck, scale, fret access, and strap feel comfortable when you actually play?
  • Playing context: Does the body construction suit your preferences and playing volume, including your tolerance for feedback?
  • Condition and setup: Do the tuning, controls, strings, and notes across the neck check out, or should you budget for an adjustment?

If two guitars are close, prioritize the one that feels comfortable and has controls you understand; a specification advantage matters only if it improves your playing or gives you sounds you will use.
